This was one of the most pleasant yarn shop experiences I've ever had and I will definitely make it a point to come back next time I am in the area. As I walked in, Linda welcomed me and took me on a quick tour of the shop, taking account where I'm from, my preferred fibers, and next project. I went home with one skein of hand spun yarn from Montana that was well worth the higher price point. I can't wait to come back here! read more

The Yarn Bar is a lovely, colorful shop with a helpful and enthusiastic owner. I really liked the amount of local yarns to choose from--I like supporting my Montana roots! The variety was really good to choose from, too; one could knit with the rainbow here. For locals they have plenty of activities like knitalongs or crochetalongs and knit nights for charity. If my job ever transferred me here, I know I'd be a regular. With one teeny little downside, a lack of parking, the Yarn Bar is one of my new favorite Billings places to visit. read more

OMG!!!! I don't even know where to begin. I called the store requesting a mystery box. I just told them the weight and what fibers not to include since I don't have experience working with linen. The box came really quickly to NY and the contents DID NOT DISAPPOINT!!! If you ever want a mystery call them and ask them to send you something. When I finish my stash, (does anyone?) This is the most AMAZING yarn store I have ever been to! I live in California and also travel a lot and visit lots of yarn shops throughout the US so I have a lot to compare it to. Wonderful shop--so much to choose from! Stopped in last month to pick up some local yarn--and they did not disappoint. Warm, friendly and helpful--doesn't get better than that. Every city I visit I check out the LYS--I see it as a leading indicator of the cultural health of a city--and Billings is healthier for it. Highly recommend it for all knitting & crocheting. read more

I was traveling through Billings and ran out of knitting projects for the car ride. I was so happy to find this awesome shop open on an absolutely miserable and freezing February morning! It was a cozy little stop with a very nice and knowledgeable owner. She helped me find a couple of easily portable projects, including recycled yarn I will use to make a hat for my daughter who is a vegan. I would have spent more time here, but I was trying to be respectful of my very patient husband's time!! We did find a great little coffee shop across the street (Big Sky Roasters). Next time I'll park him at the coffee shop so I can spend more time in this great yarn store!!! read more

Was on a road trip and stopped here glad I did. A super cute yarn store very quaint. They had a lot of local yarn and it was gorgeous I bought some sock yarn. The woman working there was so nice and friendly and super helpful. They even wrap up your yarn beautifully I would definitely be back and recommend go here if you are can. read more

When I found a pair of cute shorts and asked to try them on she said she'd have to "measure me first." I politely declined, assuming it was an optional service, to which she further informed me, it was not. Then things got weird. Because the shorts were cute (and cheap), I begrudgingly let her measure my waist. To which she said "ohh, they're too small," and put them back on the rack (they were actually my size) When I said I'd like to try them anyway, she smugly told me I could purchase them, but I still wasn't allowed to try them on. It was hands down the weirdest, most invasive, and humiliating shopping experience I've had. And it explains why the store is bursting at the seams with clothing. I doubt anyone actually buys anything after being treated like that. If you enjoy unsolicited body commentary and being size-policed over $20 vintage shorts, this place is for you. Otherwise, run. And a tip for the owner: If you want to run a 'by fitting only' boutique, then run a proper by-appointment fitting room where you pull sizes for people instead of wasting their time and humiliating them. Vintage isn't supposed to come with a side of shame.

Sometimes it's a matter of available space and sometimes it's how the space is used. Only a very few I've visited can organize space to make it feel more department store than a thrift shop. GIA is a huge store, for what it is, with nearly everything you'd find in a department store. Clothes, of course, and shoes, sorted by size. Children's clothes and toys, Christmas decorations, books, CDs, vinyl, DVDs, kitchen utensils, lamps, appliances, furniture, and miscellaneous. They've done a good job using items donated to delineate the areas and although there's only one separate room it feels like at least three. The prices are reasonable, and from time-to-time GIA will have a sale of sorts where you can fill your cart for a flat price. All the items I saw were in good condition, worn, but not trashy. Gratitude in Action uses the money from the store for their mission of support for recovery and sober living and giving people in recovery a chance to be independent.

My experience with the Yarn Bar has been nothing but great. I live 2 hours away from the store which is located in Billings, Montana, so all of my interactions and transactions have been remote. Internet orders are filled quickly and accurately. Linda and Sue and the staff have also been very responsive to email questions, which gives me a lot of confidence when ordering online. Today I had a question about a pattern from a kit I purchased from the Yarn Bar. Linda actually made and sent me a video demonstrating the technique I had trouble with. In my book, this is going way above and beyond what I expected. I have also attended Zoom events sponsored by the Yarn Bar, getting to know experts in the field. We are lucky to have the Yarn Barn in Montana, and I am looking forward to visiting the store in person soon. read more

Oh my goodness, this is the CUTEST yarn shop I have ever been in! The ambiance! (They literally had cookies on a plate in the sitting area, although that may have been because it's Christmas time :) So much yarn to choose from and very trendy for the modern knitter. The shopkeeper was warm and welcoming and had lots of great recommendations for me. They even had a little kid's spot with toys for my 1 year old baby so that my daughter didn't tear apart all the displays! It's the kind of place you can just hang out and knit, and I love that. So cozy. They have an awesome selection of local and hand dyed yarns made in Montana, which is really cool. They have classes and if I were local I would totally be attending! So much fun! read more
