She has a great variety of samples and you can get a copy of pattern with purchase of yarn. We had a lovely chat. Five stars for the shop window alone! I'm afraid that every time I pass by the store, it's either closed or I'm with my very naughty dog, so I've never been inside. But OMG that window! I've attached a couple of photos which don't even begin to do justice to the amazing handiwork that was on display just prior to Christmas. I really must make a better effort to visit, as I've noticed that the store carries Malabrigo and other yarn lines that I like very much. And btw, the neighborhood is totally charming. read more

A yarn shop that's less than 5 blocks from my apartment? Yes, please!! I'm fairly new to crocheting, but my brother and his wife are pregnant and I want to crochet a baby blanket for them. I've been getting my yarn from AC Moore, but it's cheap acrylic yarn and I really wanted something much nicer for their gift so I yelped and found this amazing little shop. The space looks small from the outside but once you get in and your eyes adjust, it seems to just keep going on forever. It's so bright and cheery inside, with the colorful walls and display racks filled with rainbows of yarn, that you can't help but smile. The owner, Donna, is incredible. She explained the basic layout of the store and asked me what I was working on and was more than happy to help me figure out the best yarn for my project (100% wool in the prettiest colors). She even helped me figure out how many skeins I needed of each color for the blanket size I'm making. After I paid, she asked if I wanted the skeins wound into a center pull ball. Umm, heck yeah I do!!! She offers this service for free and within minutes had each skein twisted into a center pull ball that is so much easier to work with. This store is exactly what I need for my hobby, from the pricing to the location to the friendly and helpful owner. Donna, you'll be seeing me a lot more!!! read more

Incredibly knowledgeable owner, who taught me so much! Her lessons, esp private, will change your life! And she is kind and patient and very, very good at explaining things. You will come away with so much more confidence and understanding of what to do then you might have even thought possible. I know that I did. My favorite local yarn store closed, so I've been checking out some of the other local ones to see what else is out there. Yarnphoria seems to have a pretty great selection and a wider variety of yarns and fibers than many other yarn stores I've been to. The display of the yarns is great, very open and accessible, and each yarn was paired with a swatch which was incredibly helpful. It was nice being able to handle all of the products and really explore what the store had to offer. I didn't end up buying anything even though I wanted to and was prepared to. I had told the owner I was interested in finding yarn for a sweater in a particular color, which she unfortunately didn't end up having. When I picked up another skein and started to look around for other project ideas, the owner came over, said she didn't have enough of that yarn for a sweater, then took the skein out of my hands and put it back on the rack. I know it must be hard to 'read' whether a customer really wants your assistance or not, but it was just a bizarre thing to do and gave me the sense that she didn't want me shopping there, so I left. read more

Warning! Expect poor service if you shop here. This was my second visit to this store and I hate to be critical of any yarn shop owner but this was the most frustrating and annoying experience I have had in any store. There was one other couple in the store when I was there and the owner basically spent all of her time with them and ignored me as I sat patiently waiting for the opportunity to check out. She chatted with them about things having nothing to do with knitting. Finally, after waiting 20 minutes I paid for my yarn and the owner said she would email me the pattern. The pattern never came and I called her and she said she had emailed it and I should look in my junk mail which I had already done. She said she would resend it which she never did. I called again and she blamed me for not receiving the email when I had been receiving emails all along from others. I gave her another email address and again the same thing happened- no pattern. I called her again and asked her to take a photo of pattern and text it to me which she did and I did receive it. Today I went to print it and it was gone from my messages. She probably used a message service which deletes the message after it is sent. Buyer beware! read more

Dona, the owner, was not only helpful, but she was also really personable. She already feels like a new friend. I can't wait til she starts giving classes. I love this place! I went there for the first time yesterday and the owner was super awesome. She was friendly and not pushy. They have a great selection of Malabrigo and a wall of delicious sock yarn. One of my favorite things about the shop was the fact that there is a table in the back and not in the middle of the floor with all the merchandise. Nothing is more awkward than walking into a yarn store with a big table full of people knitting and you can't access a wall of product without feeling in the way. What a cool spot. I will be back. The owner of this store is a true gem. I am just learning to crochet and know little about yarn. The owner was so nice and friendly. She made tons of suggestions, showed me around the store, and didn't even turn her nose up at my recently developed (and quite unfortunate) wool allergy. Because I am new to this, I don't know how price or selection compare to other places. I do know that the yarns she had looks high quality, luxurious, and beautiful to me. By evidence of her insanely gorgeous and creative projects strewn about the store, she knows what she is talking about and how to expertly work with yarn. She is not cranking out typical scarves and sweaters. This gal has it going on and is as charming and friendly as can be. What a cute little store! You walk in and it is very neat and straightforward, which I always appreciate. It is clean and easy to navigate. Yarn is in cubby-like shelves on the wall and organized by color, price, and type. In the back, there is a room full of sale yarn as well as all of the books, magazines, needles, and inspiration you could be looking for! I bought 2 skeins of yarn and the owner, Donna, an incredibly nice and knowledgable woman, took the time to wind them into giant, easy to use balls**. What really sold this place to me was Donna. She was pleasant, funny, and really wanted to help me learn to knit. She gave me a quick beginner suggestion for a scarf, and when i came in the next day completely confused she set me on the right path. **I am a new knitter so you may take what my interpretation with into your own mind. read more

This place rawks. If I had a yarn store that had all my favorite things, it would be Yarnphoria. It was uncanny. The owner, Dona, is fantastic. She is very helpful, super friendly, and was a great resource as I shopped for yarn. I didn't have any particular project in mind, I was just visiting for the weekend, and I always try to stop by yarn stores when I'm traveling. This was among the best I've visited by far. Her selection is wide ranging and she has yarns from every price point, but she definitely focuses on the good stuff. :-) She had enough of each yarn for me to stockpile for potential future projects, and even has her own custom patterns that you get for free with some yarn purchases. Her creativity and artistry is on display throughout the store in the custom knit designs that are decorating the shop. I highly recommend this yarn store to anyone who loves sumptuous yarns and an inspirational environment. I'll definitely be back on my next trip to Philly. read more

I love that there's a yarn shop here in center city, but I don't love this particular yarn shop. They do have a pretty good selection of yarn and good hours, but it's pretty pricey and the owner is a little abrasive. I asked whether they offer student discounts once, and the owner said "no- why would you even ask that?" She also kindof follows you around while you shop and asks a lot of questions which makes the experience a little uncomfortable- maybe she's just trying to be helpful but I'd prefer to browse in peace personally. read more

This place is great! Most organized yarn store I've been to. Great selection as well. The owner if VERY helpful. And we had a great conversation while she was spinning my yarn. She seemed genuinely interested in my project and encouraged me to come show her it when I was done! I bought six skeins and she spun all of them for me. Usually yarn stores I go to just spin one for me. Also, she has little knitted examples to show you what it will look like knitted/crocheted. I've never seen that before. Great store. read more

A cute little yarn store in Washington Square West. You won't find your Red Heart or Lionsbrand yarns. The yarn selection is beautiful. Each yarn is paired with a swatch to help you envision the yarn colour and texture. The woman working there was helpful & gave me advice on how many skeins I would need for my project. Dona, the owner, was visiting with John at SOTA when I was there. They both eyed my hand knit scarf and urged me to check out her store. She has gorgeous yarns, apparently a very good supply of each color for almost any project. There's a wide range of needle sizes and materials plus loads of of the other yummy accoutrements that we knitters love. Additionally, Dona is a designer and artist and many of her creations are on display and for sale. Looking at her pieces was very inspiring. She's very talented. The items she's made that are for sale are priced as you'd expect for things that are thoughtfully designed and hand knit from the finest yarns. She is clearly knowledgeable and friendly. Layout, product variety and staff make this the best yarnshop I've found in Philly. The prices are comparable to other shops. The quality is very high. read more

My daughter wanted to buy me a gift and what better than yarn! She spent over $100 for a project that the owner said she would email to her. She never did...I started my own project. It turns out the lots didn't match on 2 of the skeins. The colors were off enough to make a huge difference. If you own a yarn store and someone comes in for a gift guide them. When in these times small businesses are working so hard to be successful, the store employees need to use more honey than vinegar with customer interactions. This shop owner was caustic from the start. Her main interest was only helping customers who were making significant purchases. I had a few technical questions and she was snippy, and I ended up only needing 1 item to purchase. She plopped it on the counter & immediately left to help another customer. I stood & waited & she snapped once again at me "it's on the counter." No effort to come tell me it's cost, take money or anything. I walked out saying sorry to disturb you, she was just plain nasty. Greeting a customer with a smile & saying "how can I help you" makes a world of difference. Who knows, I could have ended up being the generous customer that purchased a lot of great yarn from you. read more

I entered the store to a bland greeting, but eventually the owner opened up and was super friendly! She really knows her stuff! I did not purchase any yarn, although high quality, they were a little too expensive...then again, if you want cheap yarn, go to Michaels. My co-worker purchased $150 in yarn and was extremly satisified with her purchase. Because of the cost and quality, I only recommend this place to people who are really into knitting/crotcheting. Don't trust the owners recommendations regarding her products. She has steered me wrong twice. She suggested a yarn for a hat, and the hat turned out to be the wrong size. I initially chalked it up to my having gotten the gauge wrong, but the problem was actually that the yarn she suggested for the pattern didn't have the right stretch for the job. More recently, I went in looking for yarn for a particular baby blanket, I needed a superwash merino. She looked at my pattern, told me which which of her yarns were "just like" the cascade superwash the pattern called for, told me the yarn I was picking out would be ok for machine washing on delicate. I bought about $150 of yarn. Finished the blanket, washed it, and the first wash ruined it and turned it to felt. After 2 experiences with her selling me expensive product that didn't perform the way she said it would, I won't buy significant stuff from this shop again, and any less-experienced knitters who are looking for guidance should be wary. She will skein your yarn for you, and has a decent supply of needles, etc. And her dog is cute. So, one star. read more

This is a great new store for knitting and crochet. I love the way that the yarn is laid out, with chunky yarns in the front and finer yarns as you move back through the store, with cotton yarns kinda off by themselves. Even though the store is new (as of mid-Feb 2013), it already has a discount area in back. The selection of knitting needles is very comprehensive and includes some brands I've never seen before! On my visit, I bought some Cascade Ultra Pima Cotton in some awesome colors, as well as some crazy variegated sock wool from Wales that is really unique. I hope the best for this new shop! read more

I was in Philly for work and had to check out the downtown yarn shops. Yarnphoria was my third and last stop, and I really liked it. They had a selection of a lot of yarns I hadn't seen before but that were very nice. Unfortunately the power went out when I had just started looking and she had to close the store. I'm very sad about that. I'd recommend this shop because they had a nice selection of yarn brands, including malabrigo and some blue sky alpacas and a lot of brands that felt and looked amazing but were not things I had seen before.
