I popped into Fleishman to find some fabric for a dress. Spoiler alert: I found it a few doors down at a different shop. This is a well-organized, well-lit store with lots of materials to pick from. They also have most of the notions and supplies to finish up your project too. I basically spent half an hour hemming and hawing over if I wanted something specific. An employee saw me (probably with a scrunched up face that happens in my perpetual state of questioning myself and everything around me) and asked if I needed any help. I let him know I was just not able to make decisions and wasn't sure if I found the fabric to inspire me. He was super nice and friendly, and let me know he'd be there the rest of the afternoon. The prices are okay; I wouldn't call it a bargain store but also not unaffordable high-end. The location is great and my experience was positive. I've made a few feeble sewing attempts, which would not have been possible without making a trip to Fleishman's. Every time I walk in there, I'm clutching a sheet of paper from my butchers sew shop class describing what materials I need, and without fail, they never look at it because they already have it memorized. Everyone (I mean everyone) is extremely patient and kind, especially when they have countless idiots like me milling around. They have everything you could possibly need for sewing from bobbins to zippers to lace. I also want to note that on the rare occasions they didn't have a pattern I was looking for, they would refer me to another store on the block, which I think is really awesome. Covid update - they are doing curbside pick up. You call ahead and order what you want. They have a list of common materials for masks on social media. I called and couldn't decide on a pattern so Ms. Tricia Fleishman herself texted me pictures of options she pulled. I completed the rest of my order via text, and it was ready for me within the hour. If you're trying to make masks, delete everything you have in your amazon cart, and support a local business. If you're anything like me, the only thing you'll regret after shopping here is not being a more talented sewer. read more

I am an avid and life long sewist. Where I live independent fabric stores have disappeared to be replaced by big box retailers. As much as there is to be found on line, nothing beats being able to touch fabric in person. When I travel I always try to find and shop at independent fabric stores. For as many times as I have been to Philly, I'm always busy and forget to look for a fabric store. Not this time. After reading all the positive reviews about Fleishman's on Yelp, I had high hopes. And I was not disappointed at all. I found everything I could ever want to sew. I was helped by a wonderful guy named Randell. He cut my fabrics, showed me pictures of his latest makes, admired my me-made outfit and helped me find exactly what I wanted. He also helped pack up my fabrics to be shipped home. I will definitely be back. A really great experience and every person working there appeared to be a sewist, helping shoppers with sewing projects big and small. I popped in here while I was exploring Fabric Row looking for inspiration for a chair I was reupholstering. They looked like they may be geared towards clothing but the staff was super helpful. The gentleman who worked there immediately directed me to a couple of options they had to browse and indicated there were a few others more geared towards what I was looking for. I came here to this lovely shop on charming Fabric Row with a unique "pet project" idea in mind, I'm being literal! I needed to find fabric for my pet Guinea Pig's cage, which is becoming more popular among small pet owners but I'm sure is still a unique request! Everyone was so helpful, friendly and went way out of their way to help me, the friendly young man assisting me had even heard of my idea and told me the pro's and con's of felt versus fleece, so I went with felt, which I initially was thrilled with the idea of and it has held up well, it's a durable, thick, good quality fabric, but I'm not sure if it's as practical for my uses because of debris sticking to it and my hesitation to wash it in hot water. Either way, I am very pleased to know of this lovely shop in a great area of the city! Everyone here was incredibly helpful and friendly! As a knitter and crafter, this shop definitely piqued my curiosity and I think that I would have a lot of fun if I knew how to sew! The quality of the felt is good, thick material and I bought 4 yards for about $15 which I think is very reasonable. I wish I knew which way SEPTA runs this way because I would love to come back to buy fleece and other fabrics. read more

For more than 75 years, Fleishman Fabrics & Supplies has loomed over the Fifth Street intersection where Passyunk Avenue vanishes into the tumult of South Street, selling fabric, trimmings, dry cleaning and tailoring supplies. All summer along, a wheeled rack has perched on the sidewalk in front of the store, as bright and incongruous as a bird-of-paradise in the concrete jungle. I paused to rummage the rainbow the other day and was delighted to discover it was full of dance costumes. As I surveyed the selection, Tricia Fleishman, who owns the business with her husband, Stanley, approached. "If you have time, I have a thousand more costumes on the third floor." Say what? How many? After climbing three flights of stairs through Fleishman's vertical fabric warehouse, Tricia led me to a series of jerry-rigged racks stuffed with enough spangled tulle and bedazzled Lycra to outfit an army of Rockettes. Leotards shining with sequins, a fully decked-out Vegas Elvis suit, tutus of all colors, harem pants and fringed rompers -- it was enough to make this former performer dance with glee. Prices start at $5 per piece, with discounts for those (like me) who purchase in multiples. My best friend and I walked out with 22 pieces, some destined for Halloween parties, others to start the best dress-up box ever for my 3-year-old cousin. My new notions mantra is: Find Fleishman's First. Why? Certainly my experience is not unique among those who travel to 4th Street - Fabric Row (or what's left of it ...) - to find notions, fabric or whatever is needed for your sewing project. My mission was ribbon and buttons. Too bad for me. My mission was fruitless: " we don't have that", "we don't carry that size", or (worse) zombie-like silence and my invisibility. Most disconcerting - especially along a street that once featured more fabric and notions shops than you could shake a needle at. And, I'm thinking, no wonder there are so few left. With such poor customer response it surprises me there are any shops left. But then ... I remembered Fleishman's which I pass constantly on my way to Essene. Also, I remembered that I bought some tulle there last year. And they were nice. They were helpful. They actually seemed glad I walked in the shop. Why didn't I find Fleishman's first? Not only did I find the ribbon nobody else had but I found buttons. Hundreds of buttons. The shop assistant was delightfully pleasant and helpful. The owner, Trish, was on hand too. I had come from Delaware looking for cotton fabric to make masks. I seen a gentleman standing at the door I found out later that he was doing curbside deliverys. I asked him if I could place a order and he said yes but your going to have to pick it up later that day. I explained to him that was to far to travel to leave and come back. So he said if we didn't mind waiting he would let me place a order. I'm glad I waited we were treated with respect and they were so patient. Letting me look through his phone to look at samples of fabric and him going in and cutting our choices. We were very thankful and appreciated him for taking his time out to help us. PROS: Not many places left on 4th for notions. Glad they have them. CONS: A lawsuit waiting to happen. I tripped three times while in the store. I am young and agile but this place is a death trap. Could not wait to leave. These folks need to get some serious organization as I nearly injured myself THREE times in five minutes and could not wait to leave. They have step stools sitting in the middle of the floor, racks with big bottoms sticking out that I tripped on, and so much junk on the floor and sticking out of shelves that it is a miracle if you don't fall or impale yourself on something. I usually like the adventure of a packed store, but this is altogether unsafe. Nobody there actually knows everything is that they carry but if you ask three different sales people you are bound to find it. And it will be inexpensive. So you might walk out satisfied, that is if you are still walking. read more

It was my first time at a fabric store, so I didn't really know what to expect, but they had a pretty extensive selection (in my admittedly uninformed opinion) and the staff was very attentive and willing to help. My friend and I also got a discount on our fabric because we're students and we bought in bulk; we're using the fabric for costumes for our dance group's show. Fleishman's is my number one go to...needing lots and lots of fabric for our latest project me and my spouse set out for "Fabrics Row." This little melting pot of gems was our very first stop. We touched, grabbed, and shuffled through all that caught our eyes. After finding exactly what we wanted we bought what we came for and told them we wanted to browse other shops before buying only from there. They were kindhearted about it and said "we'll see you soon." We peeked in a few stores but nothing caught our eye and pockets like Fleishman's did. A shop owner saw our bags and asked where had we shopped already we told him "Fleishman's" his response said it all......"right on that corner? why you won't get a better deal from any place like you will from there" is what he said with a smile We smiled back and said "you are so right" he didn't seem to mind why he was in the business of upholstery and we needed fabrics for clothing. It was just nice to see one shop owner pushing good business to another shop without any gain for ones self. #FleishmansFirst oh and though we did purchase from two other shops, we did have to go right back to Fleishman's for our final touches because of course no one else had what we were in search of. read more

They were not judgmental with my beginning level sewing knowledge and went out of their way to help me. Their prices were very very reasonable. My 14 year old daughter wanted to go fabric shopping for spring break. We usually go to NY but I wasn't ready to go back there yet. Someone mentioned fabric row in Philly which is a lot closer to us so we did our research and stopped by Fleishman's. She was met with a warm welcome and the staff took time to get to know her which went a long way as she can't wait to go back. She's told everyone about the place where the people were so nice and now her sewing instructor is planning to make a trip there. They have a beautiful selection of fabric and she was able to find what she needed to make a dress she saw online. Prices were also very reasonable.
