I was so pleased with this campground. 3 people in my party used the bathhouse/showers and raved that they were the cleanest they have ever seen. We stayed in a full hookup RV site and the site was very level. Used only 1 leveler on one side of our travel trailer. We had a 38 foot travel trailer, tow vehicle, 2 SXS, trailer and another tow vehicle with plenty of space. Behind our site was a flowing creek/river, and we were able to open the back window in our bunkhouse to have a nice view. The owners are exceptional and so pleasant. They keep everything maintained and are beyond helpful. Approachable, friendly and always willing to help! I would absolutely recommend this place and will return to this same campground. Access to the trails was very convenient and just over 1/4 mile from the grounds. Both Rockhouse and Buffalo Mountain can be accessed via Devil Anse trail. Very convenient!

Some caves only run seasonally, but I took two tours on a Sunday, and it felt like a good amount at a time. Tickets for tours are purchased at the Welcome Center, day of. There's a self explore cave, too, but you need two adults minimum in your party and each with a flashlight. The arches and natural bridges in this park were amazing sites, scattered along the park. I took on the challenge of hitting each arch / bridge, and it was doable in under 5 miles if you move between accesses.

None of my great nieces and nephews had been inside a cave. We arrived at roughly 11:15 AM. I purchased tickets at the Welcome Center for everyone to tour Saltpetre (AKA Saltpeter) Cave at 11:30 AM. It was $54 for three adults and four children. We followed our tour guide across the street, up a hill, then down the stairs and into the earth we went. This cave was used in the War of 1812 to make gunpowder. We got a history lesson from our tour guide who was so patient with the kids. This cave was the driest of all the caves at the park, so no stalactites hanging from the ceiling. But bonus was, no water on our shoes. If you want to see bats, this is not the cave. The cave used to have thousands of bats. The park conservationists are working to increase bat living in this cave. After the tour, we had to turn up our feet, one at a time, so the tour guide could spray the bottom of our shoes with soap and water. He told us this was done to prevent carrying germs/bacteria out of the cave that could harm the bat population at the park. The tour lasted roughly 45 minutes. It was worth the time and money! The kids had a blast. Only one was scared when the lights were turned off momentarily so we could experience total darkness and silence. My nephew Cooper lasted about 3 minutes, then, in his little whimpering voice, he asked if the lights could be turned back on. I can't say enough great things about our cave guide. We left the Welcome Center and headed to the public pool. The pool was free for those camping and staying in cabins. We went on a Monday, so everyone was $3. Pretty good deal! The pool was clean. Only light snacks available, icecream, chips and soda. I highly recommend you add Carter Caves to your summer fun list!

Unless you want to have your money stolen, don't book here. not to mention. who gets robbed 500 for a kayak trip? ridiculous

Office staff were so helpful. If coming from Exit 28, I-64 West, the entrance from Hwy 60 into Fox Fire Rd is a right 180 degree turn (very sharp right turn) so give yourself plenty of room. This is a small KOA that is a decent travel stop for a night or two if you're traveling through WV…read more Many of the sites are absurdly packed together and upon check in we ended up having to pay more money to upgrade to a different site because if we had tried to stay in the site they originally put us in we would have been touching the camper next to us or been mere inches away from them when we put our slides out. This is not an exaggeration. My husband and I walked around the park and from what we observed we suspect at one point many of the pull thru sites may have once been single sites split into two to maximize the park's potential profit. Nice for them but not great for the occupants. Dumpsters are located at the back of the campground which is inconvenient if you're staying in a site near the front. Although the pamphlet does say if "you're leaving in a rush" at the end of your stay you can leave your sealed up trash bag at the end of your site to be picked up. The sites are mostly level but the one we stayed in had that kind of minimal incline that cause you to roll forward just enough to make hitching up a pain. The "upgraded" sites with patios are a bit messy looking. In fact. many sites overlook a neighbor to the campground who appears to be a hoarder so that isn't the most pleasant view if you're vacationing. Although the campground can't control what the neighbor does on their property it would be nice if they invested in a fence along that side of the park to make it look tidier. On the positive side, they did have a couple of little ponds that look pretty well suited to some light recreational fishing but didn't look as appealing for swimming. They have lots of pull thru sites which is convenient for quick stopovers and they are located near a major highway (but be prepared for some road noise). It's also really nice that they're open year round. We didn't have a lot of interaction with the staff but when we did they were cordial. In summary, it's a decent campground that meets the basic needs of a traveler but I would use this more as a layover campground than a destination. Overall would probably rate it about 2.5 stars. 3 stars ranking it against a regular campground but only 2 stars comparing it to KOA's.
