All I can say is that this pub has some awesome beers on tap, and an awesome beer garden as well. However, apparently inner-city independent pubs like this one are sadly a dying breed. I can only comment on the beer, here, but it's probably the most important aspect to this curious place: it's a Sam Smith pub. I didn't actually know, prior to my visit, that these exclusive pubs existed; I've been enjoying their bombers in America for years (oatmeal stout: way too sweet and so, so good), it only stands to reason that the brand basically owns entire beer menus in London. If you're visiting for a pint, know that you're getting A) some of the better suds in the UK and B) the limited selection is kind of a spontaneity buzz kill. Environment-wise, you'll both enjoy the olde tyme warmth and dark corner chill of the country cottage vibe they're shooting for, and wonder whether at least some of it feels manufactured. I'll tell you one thing that wasn't manufactured: the gentlemen sitting at the bar, sipping their fair share, who couldn't stop creepily staring at the two of us after, presumably, figuring out we were Americans. These dudes reminded me oh so much of so many pub regulars I've seen frequenting places like this, particularly in the country: they're generally there to get knackered on a Wednesday night, they have nothing to talk about, and they're intent on spooking out foreigners. Anyway, I don't mean to droll on, we generally enjoyed the evening. Bonus points for the elaborate patio stretching around the property, I bet this place kills it during that one day of the British summer, every year. read more

This place was built many years back to grab cross-town travelers. As such, it's much bigger than a local pub and can seem a little non-intimate. On the flip side, there seems to be a lot of regulars and the whole place is old-school in decor and thus doesn't feel too anonymous. I'd be happy to stop by if traveling by again, but not sure if I'd travel to there on purpose. Unless I was Swiss. THen it might sure some sort of home sickness. Go Heidi. read more

I love this pub. Only because it is now the last of its kind. Most places near by are either poncy haunts which sell over priced, flat beer or souless chain boozers. I happen to like Samuel Smiths beer, so I am slightly biased. Sarah O hits the nail on the head when she says "It looks like a Kentucky funeral home" IT DOES!! AND.... THATS ITS CHARM. For me the kitch is bang on. The upstairs has been used for xmas parties and that was how I first discovered this place at a shindig in 1998!!! Now some years later I go there for A) Its retro old school interior which hasn't been touched since 1978.. B) Cheap beer. Alpine has been replaced with the the excellent Taddies... C) There is a tube station and numerous bus stops all around so moving on to somewhere at closing is easy... D) Big old garden, even if it is on roundabout..... I'm in love with the décor and the view out the window from the little table that usually seems to be reserved. I'm also amused that they have something posted warning against cellphone use and admonishing the customers to read or talk to each other for a change. I don't think anyone takes that seriously, and I did manage to take a couple of photos on my forbidden cellphone without upsetting anyone. The staff are friendly enough--in fact, one waiter showed me to a recently vacated seat on a couch when he saw me standing patiently over by the wall nursing a drink. The location is great--right near the Swiss Cottage tube station, and not far from the Finchley Road station, which I prefer because escalators freak me out. It's also close to the Hampstead Theatre; a movie house; a sometime open-air market; and the Palmers Lodge hotel. read more

OMG....this pub cracks me up every time I think about it. It's really a three star average pub, but LET.ME.TELL.YOU. why I give it the fourth star. When I walked in, I swear to the highest deity possible...it was EXACTLY like a Kentucky funeral home that buried by Great-Uncle. And it made me laugh, which probably tells you something about my warped sense of humour. There are pictures of horses all over the walls, mismatching chintz-y sofas and chairs everywhere in traditional red and gold, and a couple of the barmen looked like my grandpa. Overall....it actually made me reminisce about a US State that has few redeeming qualities but is home nonetheless. Also, honourable mention to the 'not-average' beer served there...I had a wheat beer I'd never heard of and it was delicious! Check it out at least once, if only to get a taste of Midwest flava. read more

This place is well worth a visit, and is good for post-show drinking if you've been to see something at the Hampstead Theatre. It's a Sammy Smiths pub, which is always a plus because it means nice local independent beers which are bizarrely cheap. Two pints of Old Brewery comes to the princely sum of £4.06. The rooms are a bit massive and the ambience can be a little weird, but you're never going to struggle to find a seat. The best thing about this place, though, is the clientele: it seemed to be largely single old men with flushed faces, either regaling the barman with lengthy stories or snoozing gently in their chairs. Love it. I'd happily go again and, it be honest, if you're in the area it's not like you have a great deal of other options! read more

Went for a quick drink with some friends, and it was very nice. They had a solid selection of lager, ale, wine and spirits. Also, the ambience was just appropriately old English whilst quiet enough to be able to hear one another in conversations. Lastly, location was very convenient as it was literally right on top of the Swiss Cottage tube station. My friend told me that the area, including the tube station, was named after this pub, though I'm not sure if that's for real! All in all, a low-key but perfect English pub experience if you're in the area. If you're confused as to what to get, try the Organic Pale Ale. read more

Sam Smiths pub with an alpine lodge feel. Really large space both inside and outside, so would be good for groups. At about 8:30 on a Monday night, was mainly an older crowd inside but mixed outside. Kitchen was sadly closed. read more

A great quaint pub with a wide selection of beers, with a great outdoor area to chill and drink in the summer. I do recommend the Taddy Lager. The staff are nice and the food was good and reasonably priced. Had 2 starters; breaded mushrooms and cheesy nachos, as we weren't that hungry. All in all a great pub with a cozy feel inside and nice ambience with the comfy seating inside. It does remind me of a ski resort lodge :) read more

Well, the area isn't a nightlife hotspot, and unless you go here, there's really only another sports pub closeby or walkabout/wetherspoons in the o2 centre...so.......... I think I have to recommend it out of default! It's an interesting place, it kind of reminded us of an old lodge, there's a large outside seating area, and the inside is quite big as well. Cheap and cheerful Sam Smith pub, the clientele are what you would expect at any place that sells below average priiced beer and while its not undrinkable the beer is well suited to the price. I've searched out a couple of these boozers about the city and while this isn't my favourite (currently the Rising Sun, Farringdon) it's alright. Very handy for a post leisure centre pint which is directly opposite. read more

From the outside this pub looks like a stereotypical 'Swiss Cottage' and I'm not joking when I say this, it even has the red and white striped poles running across it. It's deceptive from the outside, because you'd imagine the bar staff to be in traditional outfits to match the decor but you meet them and that's not the case, but they're friendly enough. The atmosphere and people who drink there are quite down-to-earth and a good bunch of people. The drink is really reasonable and they even stock White beer, which is my favourite. If you see it and you really can't miss it, pop in but I don't think it'd be a regular spot to drink. read more

Food is not worth it, but it's a nice place to grab a pint. The Sam Smith beer selection is great. I had a steak and ale pie that was straight out the freezer, which I guess is to be expected. My friend got the lamb shank, which he liked. Service is friendly. read more

Met up with a friend in the area. It was quite late and she wanted a drink so we came here. I have seen this place and been past numerous times but never been in, this was the perfect opportunity to come down and have a look. It is a cute old English pub. Something I'm use to seeing in Derbyshire. Nothing in London. It is reasonably priced and it was slightly noisy but not too noisy that I can't hear my friend and follow the conversation. If in the area then I would consider coming back as its one of the only pubs remaining on Finchley Road and this part of Swiss Cottage. read more

I had certain hopes about this place. It didn't have the comfort of an 'old man pub' and it was awkwardly large. The beer was well priced, and the food was decent (in price and taste) enough that I didn't regret going, although my own proximity probably played a factor in this. Located right opposite the tube station and being the only building around that looks like a cottage makes it hard to miss. I couldn't say to what extent it's cottage-ness is authentic, but in any case it is genuinely homely and cosy. It kind of feels like a big living room. There's also outdoor seating, which works well if you're there late at night, but I'd imagine it'd be much less pleasant to sit outside around rush hour, with two big busy roads on either side. It's a Samuel Smith pub, which is always a winner with me since I'm rather partial to their stout. I wouldn't bother going here specially but it's a good choice if you're in the area. read more

We spent 3 days in the area on vacation and went here each night. I loved the old outdated decor and the staff and locals were very nice. I got the stout and my wife got the cider beers. I LOVED the stout! I only wish we could get beer like this back in the states. We even ate the fish and chips here a couple times and I loved the food. I would say if you're in the area you will not be disappointed with this pub. I will say it did get pretty busy on friday and saturday with younger college kids but during the week it was quite and you could hide away in a corner and have a nice chat. read more

A large Sam Smith's pub wedged between two main roads but the atmosphere inside is cosy and welcoming. Visited on a rainy Sunday afternoon and tried the vegetarian Sunday roast which was OK, as were the usual well-priced beers. A mixed crowd of younger and older drinkers. read more
