Yellow Tag Thrift is a nonprofit business in Greenbrook. I have visited there a few times. It is out of my way from home, so when I am in the area I stop in. I believe once upon a time it was a Good Will or Salvation Army Thrift Store. It is one of those places where it is best to shop the sales days, and be on their email list to receive any special discounts. Also, if you have the time to search through items, you can find some true gems. It is somewhat organized, but quite over cluttered. Once you get past the insanity of the entrance and cashier, it is manageable. If the store was crowded, I would make a B-line to the door. Luckily, the times I have visited have been quiet, and I was able to rummage through items without feeling as if other customers were hovering over me. As other reviewers mentioned the prices do range, nothing seems consistent. i saw plenty of designer items. They do have a decent extended size area for women. You will find the usual gamut of thrift store merchandise. They sell clothes, shoes, items for your home, arts and crafts, books etc. There is sufficient parking, the staff is friendly, and donations are accepted in the back of the store. Overall, when I have visited, I find some practical things I need, and then some. Go check it out if you are in the area. Make sure it is during the week rather than the weekend. read more

This thrift store is packed and has some goodies if you look. Clothes are organized by size which is a big plus. However, it's pretty expensive for a secondhand store. I saw a dress with tags from Macy's for 60$. Yes, it was new but still, you can go to Macy's and pick out your own new dress for 60$ instead of buying it from a secondhand store. My mom and I found some cute clothes when we visited but couldn't justify the high prices so we left without buying anything. This place is so expensive for no reason. They have antique prices and don't even sell antiques. You would be better off, going to unique in South Plainfield or a flea market or even some type of street fair with vendors who sell unique items that may be worth the price. The thrill of the hunt is what thrifting is all about! This store never disappoints. I have found Lenox, PartyLite, antique optic glass and cut glass pieces here on different visits. Scored a vintage, optic glass desk lamp. Great source for wall art and picture frames, many I purchased were brand new in package. Sign up for free and earn points for every time you shop. Implicit Racial Bias This place has great items and I was able to get what I needed but as I was shopping, I witnessed one of the cashiers/employees stop someone from getting a piece of jewelry from the jewelry section and asked them to leave the items on the front desk while they were shopping. Mind you, these items were not locked and were on top of the counter for display. The shopper had everything else in their basket but the minute they picked up the pieces of jewelry they liked, the employee insisted they leave the items on the table. I've never heard of such rules at any thrift store, including goodwill or even UNIQUE thrift (which is now closed down), but what a coincidence that this shopper was black and the only black person the shop. I think it's safe to say the employee was being a tad bit bias (I'm being sarcastic of course). read more

I would not call this a thrift store. I would call it your basic old-fashioned junk shop and the prices are way too high. They should be taking whatever they can get for most of the junk. That is there instead of charging outrageous prices. I saw a small TV stand marked for $150, dollar store items marked for four or five dollars, and brands from Target you can probably get cheaper new at Target. The place is basically a mess. You might find some thing if you sift through but most of the stuff should just be in a dumpster. read more

I wish I could say something nice about this shop... But I can not. It is not a clean establishment, not organized, and you will be hard-pressed to really find something nice to purchase. It is more of an old-fashioned junk shop. Somewhere to go for the sake of curiosity-not to actually find something you need. You are better off going to Goodwill or Habitat for Humanity. Great selection of dresses -- we live in South Orange and checked out Yellow Tag on a friend's recommendation. My daughter said that it was clear the girls at her high school didn't know about it, otherwise they'd be cleared out. She found awesome vintage dresses! My only suggestion for improvement is maybe get some fans to move the air around. It's kind of stuffy inside on a warm day. read more

Been shopping here for years. Needed a knee scooter that had been sitting in this thrift store for over a year. I asked what the price was. The woman at the counter who is not the owner, said that the item was $199.99. I mentioned that I can buy the same item brand new in a box, delivered to my house for $100 from Amazon. Even offered to show her on my phone. She shrugged her shoulders. This was a medical necessity for my injured son as well. So, I ordered it new from Amazon. STOP! DON'T SHOP THIS STORE! NO EXCHANGES OR REFUNDS!!! I stopped in on my way home cuz it looked kinda quirky and like there were hidden treasures inside. There are some nice things hidden away amidst the junk. Found some really cute (over priced) Gap and St. Johns Bay crop pants. I wasn't comfortable trying them on in store because it's kinda dirty inside. Brought them home to try on within an hour of purchasing. Right size, wrong cut for me. My fault for not seeing a sign some where around the register stating no refunds or exchanges. CASHIERS FAULT FOR NOT BRINGING " NO EXCHANGE/ REFUND POLICY TO MY ATTENTION. The furniture prices are insane. Went in yesterday and saw a hutch I liked for $150 but the girl at the counter told me to come back today because they were having 50% off day. Unfortunately I wanted to love this place and found a few items I was excited about. I was told the price of a set of Corelle dishes would be DOUBLE the goodwill tag still on the dishes, and then was told a video game and a dress were "mislabeled" when I brought it up to the counter to pay. I've been to every thrift within 45 miles of this store and know the going rates of all of the above, so know when I'm being ripped off or lied to. Really frustrating, disappointing experience. I used to come here for years when it was the Salvation Army. Everything went down hill when it turned into yellow tag. Everything is over priced. They should rename the store "glorified garbage" because that's all it is. They now have a "vintage" section, half of the section isn't true vintage. Very disappointed in this place. Hey Fellow Thrifters! I visited Yellow Tag "Thrift" Store a few times. I donated items on the first visit which was on a Saturday. They took them at the front desk. I walked thru the store and found items to be unreasonable and outrageously priced. I love thrifting and always find treasures. She has some nice items, so I was disappointed. I found a nice table in great condition. priced at $350. The teenagers that work the floor were very helpful and courteous. The guy called the owner twice to ask about the table, however, she wasn't available. I told him that I would check back with him before I left. I continued to look around and a 1/2 hour later he said that she never returned his calls. The young lady was very friendly, professional and offered to help. I asked about certain items and she knew where to direct me because she stocked the floor. She also told me that they have discount days and a 50% off day in the middle of the week. I went back that next Tuesday to see if the table was marked down and it was not. I noticed the curtains I donated a few days earlier were tagged $19.99 per panel! Also, the store was over crowded with items and I couldn't push the cart up the aisles. They wanted $59.99 for two sweaters. The original tag was still attached and priced $30 and $40. I found a nice used candle set in the front of the store that was overpriced. I would never pay $29.99 for a used candle set at a thrift store. The lady at the front desk checked me out without greeting me and only spoke to tell me the price of a simple button up sweater that was $29.99. I declined the item. I had to ask about the discount days and where to find the color(s) for store discounts. She got agitated when I asked her to repeat it because she spoke quickly and I didn't hear her. I called the next day to see if Wednesday is 50% off. The same lady answered the phone and said "No". When I asked her to explain she spoke fast and got nasty in tone telling me about three colored discount tags, asked "is that all?" and hung up abruptly before I could respond. I checked the reviews and they are horrible but, accurate. I understand why! The prices are exorbitant for items that you can buy from retail stores brand new. As for the front desk associate, in my opinion, she is icy and detached like she doesn't want to be there. Smh. I'm going to contact the store owner about the table. I'll keep you posted on the reply. I hope it's a good one to redeem the damage that has already been done. read more

The manager owns the entire building and rents the other side out,so there is not any rent involved.I have heard from several sources that they DO NOT contribute to any charities. They probably even get a tax brek because the Government more then likely thinks they contribute to charity. The manager is nasty not only to the public but also to the employees. Prices here are higher than at many thrift stores. Quality and price are often disproportionate. The difference between thrift items and new should be more substantial. As a result, the store is usually overcrowded. The donation area in rear of store is often so packed they cannot accept larger items. The staff are pleasant and friendly, and willing to assist customers. One late-night closing would be helpful. Christmas holiday hours are usually extended. Hours: Sun - 12 to 5 Mon - 9 to 6 Tue - 9 to 6 Wed - 9 to 7 Thur - 9 to 6 Fri - 9 to 7 Sat - 9 to 6 Not a bad place, but I can't rate it highly in comparison to similar thrift stores. read more

Poor selection, over priced and the owner is not at all nice. Had a number of issues there and stopped shopping there altogether. They sold me a printer and labeled it as new ,assured me it was new took their word for it and and shipped it to my daughter only to find out it was used dirty and when my daughter came back they would not take it back...lost $50 and cost to ship to my daughter and had a unhappy daughter. Apparently the printercwas removed and put back from the bottom of the box after years of use. Another time they had a 50% off the ENTIRE store sale, however when I went to go pay the owner told me the items (Power Puff girls plush) was not on sale its a collectible...huh?? so everything is not what it seems?? The owner needs to be a lot nicer and have heard complaints of other thrift shoppers about her. ..you get more bees with honey than vinegar. Go to Unique nearby where they have tons of new stuff daily, good or decent prices and just as important... friendly management and staff. read more

Went here twice with donations, clothes and bedding. You drop donations off in back and ring the bell. I usually stop inside for a look to see if there's something I can get for a bargain. They have so much Christmas stuff right now. Why buy new? If you're downsizing and have stuff to get rid of, bring it here. Lots of good items, children's clothes, handbags, scarves, furniture, games. I'll bring my tree stands soon and games. Several shops have closed in town, so Green Brook is an option. Only donations that are in good shape. Nice set up and neat, easy to look for items. read more

I cleaned out my closet and had quite a few really nice hangers. The ones that you purchase in the store. I called the thrift shop and a lady answered. I asked her if they could use them because I just hated to just throw them away. She said yes so I told her I would drop them off. I drove all the way there to drop them off and when I got there 2 ladies in the back told me they were not accepting donations today. They saw the hangers and said to me we don't need hangers. I told them I had called and was told to drop them off but they told me "NO". I asked if I could drop them in their garbage bin than since I drove all that way and I was told "NO" Not a nice place and people aren't so nice either...I thought it was just shameful and I would never go there or have anyone I know go there either....That's what I got for trying to do something nice.....Shameful! read more

I used to frequent this store quite often a few years ago. They had a pretty decent selection of clothing, books and household items that were priced just right. Yesterday was the first time in over a year since I've been back and I am so sad to say it might just be my last. Let me first say that I was pleased to see the same sweet Latin American women working there. She is very attentive and quick on her feet to help out any guest. Now...let me get to the not so good. I have to agree with many of the previous reviews by saying these items are extremely overpriced. People thrift for the joy of treasure hunting. As I browsed through I found plain knit hats priced at $9.00, basic sweaters for $25, half used candles for $7 and jackets ticketed as high as $60! Why would someone want to pay retail prices for used items when they could get all these items new from a regular store for cheaper or the same price?! Being there actually made me upset because I was feeling ripped off before even buying anything. It just sucked the enjoyment out of the visit. read more

The women who works there or owns the business is nasty and very dishonest. I have finally decided to never return. First of all, her merchandise, at times, is dishonestly overpriced as many items are NOT at "thrift" price. For example, there was a vase sticker priced at $19.99. However, when I looked at the bottom, it still had the HomeGoods sticker priced at $12.99. This is only one of many times I have seen this scenario. Next, I was considering purchasing a ring that was priced at $19.99. I asked her if she negotiated prices and would she sell the ring for $10. She told me, "No". The gentleman behind me walked up to her with a tv price at $39. He asked her if she would take $30. She replied, "Sure". I turned around and said, I thought you did not negotiate." This gal replied, well it was really 50% off but the tag fell off". I said so he really should have been charged $20. She confidently replied, " Yup". I said, so you discriminate and got game. She replied again..."Yup". She is nasty and dishonest. I'm not sure if she is the owner or not, but the Bible says never give your pearls to swine so I shall never....ever shop there again! I have to agree with the comments from Richard D. One of the female managers is extremely unfriendly. She's as cold as ice and never a smile or a kind word to the customers. Forget about getting a deal or even a fair price when negotiating with her. It just won't happen. The merchandise is VERY OVERPRICED. You'll find the same prices at TJ Maxx or Marshalls for unused products/clothes. I happened to shop on what they advertised as Dollar Thursday. It's a joke. The clothes are only one dollar BUT only on RED TAG items. Good luck finding any red tags. I combed the entire store and found ONE SWEATER with a red tag. It's sad because it could be a fun store to shop at but the prices and the staff has sent me down the highway. Don't waste your time shopping at Yellow Tag. read more
