So we just went to the 1940's Ball at the Boulder Airport June 15th after getting our hopes up for…read moreover a year after my fiancé's friend went and told him about it. He's a huge history buff so we went all out on buying a suit and accessories for him, a dress and accessories for me, plus the time and effort putting it all together. I don't know if this is how it is every year and I'm aware it was sold out, but for what we paid we felt pretty let down. First, I'm disabled and nobody knew where to tell us to park for ADA parking, we had to ask 5 people and make 2 circles before someone directed us somewhat correctly. And a guy in a hi-vis vest basically told us to park where we were at which wasn't super accessible but we made it work. I'm not wheelchair bound yet but it was a good walk from where we parked. There seemed like there was no planning for ADA parking. I couldn't imagine having to navigate that area in a wheelchair or even with a cane. Upon entry, we noticed the crowds and how tight it was trying to walk around there. You were bumping into people everywhere you turned. There were booths to sell things in a portion of the area and even that was crowded. And it didn't seem like there were very many of them. And you pretty much had to wait in line to get to the booth and actually go in or see their offerings. Every single thing from the atm, to drinks, to photos with planes or scenes, had a line of at least 50-75 people, or more in some instances, often times having multiple long lines for things like each side of the planes or alcoholic drinks. Or lines for drink tickets to go stand in another line for drinks. We opted out of drinking after seeing the process. Even if you bought drink tickets in advance, you'd have had a really long line. And then lines were running into other lines, and in the middle of the line about every 15 minutes they had to split the crowds to get their little trash carts around. We tried to walk around to things but everything was so full there was no room to enjoy it, couldn't even find room on the dance floor or anywhere near that stage. The other dance area in the hangar was packed full and you couldn't get in. We were able to find a spot to stand and hear a few Hawaiian songs, the group was really good. Afterwards we got a few pictures and decided maybe the lines would die down if we grabbed dinner. When we found the dining area the tables and chairs were basically squished together so badly that you couldn't get to the only available seating. I don't know who set this thing up but the tables were set up where there was maybe 2 ft of room between each of them, add some folding chairs on each side of this narrow isle and people and you're practically on top of one another. After standing around and looking for 15 minutes we finally found 2 spots, having to climb over 3 people to get there. It took about 10 minutes at the atm, another 30 for 2 lemonades, and another 30 for 2 burgers. By this time we were less than impressed but we were keeping our seats and waiting for the advertised flyover at 735ish. By 830 it still had never happened. We never even knew why it didn't happen, if there was an announcement, it was not audible. It was still on the website as a scheduled activity at 730. It was a big disappointment especially since it was one of the reasons why my fiancé wanted to go. It was getting dark and they started the "drive in movie" which was just short clips, like trailers, for everything Bob Hope had ever been in. No actual movie at least while we were there before we gave up and left. We got one single picture of us with one plane. That line only had like 10 people. We Didn't get to dance, didn't get to do any of the other activities, and I feel cheated after spending a total of almost $700 between the tickets, food, clothes, and accessories. I'm really glad I didn't spend money to get my hair or makeup done. It's like somebody thought "how many people can we cram in here for at least $100 each?" Like did vendors or certain activities bail out? Like is this how this event is? Looking around we weren't the only people who looked miserable. It wasn't a "Ball", it was like a crammed flea market with 20 booths a few classic cars and armed forces equipment and a few planes and long lines everywhere to see it more than in passing. It felt thrown together and seemed like we paid $200 to stand in line for dinner and to watch some movie trailers from the 1940s.

It's a great…read moreshowcase of local distilleries all of whom distill their spirits in Colorado (with some growing their own ingredients, how cool is that?!). The event was easy to find (I was a bit nervous when I saw that the Boulder County Fair was also taking place at the same time at the same venue) and there was no problem finding parking. Upon entering the event we were Id'd and given wrist bands and tickets. Each vendor presented a "signature cocktail" and we were encouraged to drop our ticket off to our vendor of choice to cast our vote (no easy feat with 20 distilleries in attendance). Many distilleries had their company founders and distillers present which was awesome. It's so amazing to meet people so passionate about their craft as well as the folks who brainstormed the idea and brought it to life! I was happy to see familiar faces from some recent Yelp Denver events! (huge shout outs to Spirit Hound, J&L, as well as Woody Creek Distillers). The event took place over 4 hours and for the most part I felt that attendees did a great job of taking it easy and imbibing thoughtfully. I've attended beer events in the past and found it to be a bit unpleasant when folks got rowdy. I think this event taking place in the afternoon at an outside venue certainly helped. There were several law enforcement officers present and I suspect this certainly helped keep people responsible. There was a Mexican food truck which I enjoyed quite a bit (Comida - http://www.eatcomida.com). The mushroom quesadilla was well worth the wait. The neighboring county fair also had some food offerings and I saw a few spirits festival attendees walking around with turkey legs and alligator on a stick. The spirits fest had two tented areas with tables for relaxing, dining, and hydrating with complimentary water, bottled water, cupcakes, and candies (chocolates, lolli pops, tootsee rolls, etc.). There were real bathrooms close by which was a amazing! On hot summer days port a potties just are not my cup of tea. Overall I thought this was a great event. Should they green the event (ex. ask participating vendors to use compostable cups, bring water bottles to refill) as well as make the "signature cocktail" contest more transparent for the vendors and attendees I would happily award it 5-stars.

It was really busy, and despite the seemingly treacherous flooring in the Riverwalk Center, it was pretty civilized and organized. Most people thought it was worth the $45! My favorites were the Rising Sun and Angel Fire. I also liked two cocktails especially well--the old fashioned sno-cone and the smoky one with the cookies! For all of $25 we weren't sure if we were stumbling into a bust of an event or not, and visions of standing around in the cold amongst folding tables drinking small thimbles full of cheap vodka danced in our heads. As it turns out the event is apparently one of the best kept secrets in Colorado! The event was indoors at a great venue, extremely well run with a large turnout, live band, food, and tons of extremely attentive spirit distributors exhibiting. Instead of just sampling straight liquor all night virtually every distillery has signature cocktails for you to sample, and some of the were just mind blowingly delicious. Some of my favorite distilleries in attendance were Peach Street (the big winners), Forecastle Rum, Montanya, Stranahan's, and Black Canyon (I still fantasize about their whiskey-rita). All in all it was an amazing event and quite possibly the best $25 I've ever spent. Don't hesitate to grab your friends, book a condo, and come up for this event in 2014!

They offer free tours, which involves watching a short clip about the history of Hammond and then watching the employees work through a looking glass. I think it's amazing that they HAND MAKE all their candies. They have cute paper hats that you can wear. In addition, there are some areas for good photo opportunities. After the tour, you are gifted with a candy cane! You are then led into their candy store. You obviously don't have to purchase anything, but to complete the experience, it doesn't hurt to walk away with some chocolate. (: I'm not from Colorado, so I'm not sure if the prices were cheaper or more expensive than the grocery store (I'm going to assume more expensive). Regardless, we did buy some things. I got a Hammond chocolate bar, some discounted chocolate from their clearance section, and their popular Mitchell Sweets. The Mitchell sweet is $2 for a small packet! My husband liked it, but I thought it was extremely sweet and I only took the tiniest bite. I feel like that little packet can go a long way because of the sweetness. They charge $0.10 for a bag. I didn't want to pay for a bag, so I just used my paper hat as a tray. lol Overall, I did enjoy the visit. Well the first leg of the hot wing tour is complete and I thought it was a success! It took place…read morein the Southeast area of town and included Wingin' It, Grillin' Wings and Things (Park Meadows), Wing Hut (Hampden and Chambers), and Woody's (Buckley Road). We started with 50 wings and 5 sauces at Wingin' It for 9 people (thanks for joining us Dan N) . All the sauces we tried were pretty good (Honey Mustard 5/10) and I thought the good sized wings were cooked nicely with a good crisp. Next up was Grillin' Wings and Things. Since Dan N continued on his journey to Home Depot we were at 8 people. We ordered 2 dozen wings with three different sauces. (Asian Bite unanimous). Wings here are fried, then sauced, and then grilled to caramelize the sauce. These are the wings pictured in the first photo. Grilling these good sized wings is definitely a great idea. A little bit of char, a nice crunch and the added flavor of the flame. We did notice that the sugar in the sweeter sauces lended itself better to grilling because of the caramelization while the savory ones lose some of their flavor? We were served small cups of the sauce with the wings though so more sauce could be added. We were also comped a 6-piece order of their pork shank "Pig Wings" which everyone loved! Thanks GW&T! Wing Hut was our third stop. This was Dale Z's rec and Wing Hut was the only spot out of the 4 that I had had before and i did enjoy them previously. They have a decent selection of craft beers and they also have Jones brand soda on their dispenser. We ordered three pounds of wings (6-8 pieces per) with three sauces. (Inferno Ranch 6-8) The smallish wings were cooked well but rather heavily sauced. With such a large and interesting selection of sauces (not nearly the 50 that Wingin' it boasts though), there are other sauces we would probably try on any subsequent visits. (They are caddy-corner from Dry Dock Brewing which is def. an advantage for them). Last stop Woody's Wings Aurora. Now down to 6 people we ordered 3 of their 6-piece wing orders with three sauces. A much shorter list of sauces AND a 99 cent upcharge for their Honey Sriracha sauce? Is the HS sauce that good? Is it the only sauce they put name brand ingredients in? Was the 5-gallon bucket the cock sauce came in blessed by David Tran? WTH, we'll bite. (Honey Sriracha 6-6 I'm gonna have to come up with a recipe at home!) I think there was a consensus that the good sized wings were slightly underdone and hence not very crispy and the meat closest to the bone had that slightly slimy mouth feel like a frog leg. A big thanks to the crew that came out to join us on this inception tour and to Cyn C for hauling us around. Always great to see you all! Yeah, I'm slightly winged out so it might be a bit before the next one and I think we'll take Cyn C's suggestion and maybe only do three spots next time so we can sample more sauces at each place. But, stay tuned because it is going to happen!

UPDATE! Having been…read moreto the Denver Brew Fest (both summer and winter sessions) MANY times over the years; I can def say, "Woohoo! As good as it gets!" + SPACE: Mile High Station is a great venue for this Fest! It def embodies Colorado. It's a turn of the century steel and ironworks building that has been repurposed into and event space! Love the character. The only drawback here is the parking! The lot is super small. If you have a light-rail station near you I'd say take that to Mile High Stadium and walk over from there. It's not even a ten minute walk. + BREWERS: The line up is always fantastic! Obvs Colorado breweries dominate the show, but there's plenty of others in attendance too! Over the years I have even seen brewers from my hometown in Northern California in attendance. Colorado breweries often include names such as: Denver Beer Co, Stem Ciders, Crooked Stave, Grist, Wild Cider, Ratio Beerworks, Verboten, Weldworks, Strange Craft, Little Machine, Pikes Peak, Oscar Blues, and sooo many more. + FOOD TRUCKS: My personal favorite has been on-site for each Fest to date. Basic Kneads. It's pizza done awesome. Plus The Goods is usually on hand serving up some excellent smoked and grilled meats. Turkey leg anyone? + ENTERTAINMENT: There's a live band for each evening. This year featured Nevermind the 90's and Super Doppler. Usually the band is set up on a stage outside or in a tent area outside (depending on weather). They have speakers set up all around to ensure you can hear the tune regardless of where you are in the venue. + PRICE: At only $35 for general admission and $45 for VIP, I can safely say this is one of the cheapest Fests out there. But don't let the cheap cost fool you. They really deliver! A suggestion I would have for the future would be a two day pass offering. For those who want to check out both days of festivities. The proceeds from Denver Brew Fest support Swallow Hill Music. I know that I will continue to be a patron of the Denver Brew Fest in the years to come! Most def can't wait for the next Fest! Cheers! **Pro Tip: I HIGHLY recommend buying the VIP tickets. Why? 1) You get an extra hour to enjoy even more brews. 2) Less people during the VIP hour. 3) Special tappings are often offered by the brewers. Go ahead. Treat yo' self, you VIP you!
