So we just went to the 1940's Ball at the Boulder Airport June 15th after getting our hopes up for over a year after my fiancé's friend went and told him about it. He's a huge history buff so we went all out on buying a suit and accessories for him, a dress and accessories for me, plus the time and effort putting it all together. I don't know if this is how it is every year and I'm aware it was sold out, but for what we paid we felt pretty let down. First, I'm disabled and nobody knew where to tell us to park for ADA parking, we had to ask 5 people and make 2 circles before someone directed us somewhat correctly. And a guy in a hi-vis vest basically told us to park where we were at which wasn't super accessible but we made it work. I'm not wheelchair bound yet but it was a good walk from where we parked. There seemed like there was no planning for ADA parking. I couldn't imagine having to navigate that area in a wheelchair or even with a cane. Upon entry, we noticed the crowds and how tight it was trying to walk around there. You were bumping into people everywhere you turned. There were booths to sell things in a portion of the area and even that was crowded. And it didn't seem like there were very many of them. And you pretty much had to wait in line to get to the booth and actually go in or see their offerings. Every single thing from the atm, to drinks, to photos with planes or scenes, had a line of at least 50-75 people, or more in some instances, often times having multiple long lines for things like each side of the planes or alcoholic drinks. Or lines for drink tickets to go stand in another line for drinks. We opted out of drinking after seeing the process. Even if you bought drink tickets in advance, you'd have had a really long line. And then lines were running into other lines, and in the middle of the line about every 15 minutes they had to split the crowds to get their little trash carts around. We tried to walk around to things but everything was so full there was no room to enjoy it, couldn't even find room on the dance floor or anywhere near that stage. The other dance area in the hangar was packed full and you couldn't get in. We were able to find a spot to stand and hear a few Hawaiian songs, the group was really good. Afterwards we got a few pictures and decided maybe the lines would die down if we grabbed dinner. When we found the dining area the tables and chairs were basically squished together so badly that you couldn't get to the only available seating. I don't know who set this thing up but the tables were set up where there was maybe 2 ft of room between each of them, add some folding chairs on each side of this narrow isle and people and you're practically on top of one another. After standing around and looking for 15 minutes we finally found 2 spots, having to climb over 3 people to get there. It took about 10 minutes at the atm, another 30 for 2 lemonades, and another 30 for 2 burgers. By this time we were less than impressed but we were keeping our seats and waiting for the advertised flyover at 735ish. By 830 it still had never happened. We never even knew why it didn't happen, if there was an announcement, it was not audible. It was still on the website as a scheduled activity at 730. It was a big disappointment especially since it was one of the reasons why my fiancé wanted to go. It was getting dark and they started the "drive in movie" which was just short clips, like trailers, for everything Bob Hope had ever been in. No actual movie at least while we were there before we gave up and left. We got one single picture of us with one plane. That line only had like 10 people. We Didn't get to dance, didn't get to do any of the other activities, and I feel cheated after spending a total of almost $700 between the tickets, food, clothes, and accessories. I'm really glad I didn't spend money to get my hair or makeup done. It's like somebody thought "how many people can we cram in here for at least $100 each?" Like did vendors or certain activities bail out? Like is this how this event is? Looking around we weren't the only people who looked miserable. It wasn't a "Ball", it was like a crammed flea market with 20 booths a few classic cars and armed forces equipment and a few planes and long lines everywhere to see it more than in passing. It felt thrown together and seemed like we paid $200 to stand in line for dinner and to watch some movie trailers from the 1940s. read more

This was my first time attending and I came from Seattle, WA to attend this event. I can't wait until the Christmas Ball! If you love all things vintage and 1940s like I do this is definitely an event you shouldn't miss. Everyone had their best 1940s attire on and this event looked like something out of a movie. This particularly event had: Glenn Miller Orchestra Joe Smith and the Spicy Pickles Swing Dance Band La Pompe Jazz Swing Dance Band Jeremy Mohney Swing Dance Band Vintage Aircraft Performances by Satin Dollz, 23 Skidoo( Swing Dance Performance Team) Frank Sinatra Impersonator( Great Singer) Bob Hope Impersonator And so so much more I would like to add that yes some of the lines for certain things were or could be long which is to be expected at any event of this magnitude, but they had many stations and restrooms. You only had to walk a short distance to find a restroom or station that either didn't have a line or was a extremely brief wait. I never had to stand in line long for anything. There are few events that live up to the glamour, but the 1940's ball did just that. I have been to a military ball and various other events and none have lived up to the expectations like this. The dancing and the smiles on everyone's face continued throughout the night. Love love love this event! FYI: The turnout and the size of the event was huge and there were literally 100s and 100s of people at this event. Out of all these people I only see 1 or 2 reviews below that weren't favorable and there is always that one so don't let that discourage you. This event is well worth and definitely continuing to grow bigger, better and stronger. read more

First time attending the 1940s Ball and I am definitely looking forward to the next one. We arrived around 8, so it was a busy time and there were a ton of people. Long lines for the photographs with planes and a couple of the food trucks. We spoke to a few couples who had done this before and their tips were - wait until a little later to get your pictures done. The lines seem to dissipate the later it gets. They suggested walk around, do some shopping, go to the other stage, listen to the music. Another tip: bring some cash. They use tickets for drinks and cash for the food trucks. There are a few ATMs, but nobody likes those fees. We wished there were a few more food truck options. They seemed to run out of food fast. (I was told more trucks will be there next year!...Tocabe?) Probably my favorite part of the night was the Glen Miller band and dancing on that dance floor. The music was big band swing. After the band, Frank Sinatra sang & the dancing continued. There was a best dressed contest and raffle prizes - none of which I won. There's always next time. I know I am definitely looking forward to the Christmas Ball in December. read more

But was disappointed in the lack of activities that were offered. It seemed like it was just an overpriced flea market with a band and some highly expensive food trucks that people went cosplaying too. The schedule of events included a fly over by WWII era planes, but that didnt happen, and since the weather was bad, most of the people were crammed in the small hanger. Inbetween the bands songs were stage acts that were very contrived and not very entertaining. There was belly dancing in the hanger,but after a few acts it kinda got old, and you could tell that they were making up their dance routines as they were going along. The best part of the evening was the people watching, looking at the level other people put into their costumes. read more

A buddy of mine from a work seminar gave me two extra tickets to this Ball. My wife and I had attended a few dances and events before, but this ball exceeded all of my expectations. Some of the events I had been to were very disorganized and a little...chaotic. I found this not to be the case at the 1940's WWII Ball. The events and activities all appeared to run smoothly, and as a patron, I appreciated that immensely. The food and music were all top notch, and the event location at the Boulder Airport was a solid choice. Seeing all of those original WWII planes definitely brought back memories for me as kid (speaking as someone who still to this day collects and plays with antique toys). And I've got to say, for a man, I really did enjoy wearing an outfit from way back in the day. read more

The 1940's WWII Era Ball was one of the best events I have been to! I was living in Boulder on business for a couple of months in the spring, and my next door neighbor highly recommended the event. It looked like fun, so I thought I would check it out. I am so glad I went because it was an amazing experience. I loved doing my hair and makeup, and picking out a cool vintage dress to wear. It was like being transported to a different era. I met a lot of amazing people from all over the area and made some new friends, too! The food, drinks, and entertainment were all top notch. You could tell great care went into creating a pleasant and lively atmosphere for the guests. The best part is that the event benefits the Wounded Warrior Project and the Spirit Flight Center. It feels great knowing that I'm contributing to a great cause. I will definitely have to come back next year for their Christmas event (I've heard that one is great too!) I would recommend this event for anyone looking to go to an amazing party! read more

A great time, but still needs improvement. We got there early and it was wonderful! Got to watch the WWII planes fly overhead, take spectacular pictures, watch people swing dance and have a cocktail. As the evening got darker, there was not enough light to traverse the grassy terrain or see where restrooms were placed and absolutely no light in the port-o-potties. Plus there needed to be several more restrooms. People were actually peeing in the parking lot instead of waiting in a bathroom line for 45 minutes. In addition, there were lines for every food truck, drink stand, ticket booth, and picture booth. All in all, we had a spectacular time, enjoying all of the costumes, dancing and drinks. We would definitely go again, hoping that some adjustments are made in the future. read more

We had the best time at this! This was our first time going - I went with some girlfriends and we must have taken 400 pictures. The airport hangar makes a lovely backdrop. The sun shining off the planes as the sun goes down, dusk settling over the colored bar lights. It really is pretty. The attendees are some of the BEST dancers I have ever seen. Putting a set of bleachers in front of the dance floor was a good call because I could watch that all night. The aerialist was absolutely mesmerizing. What a unique and beautiful experience. The roller derby girls were fun! And of course the dress - from military to formal wear. Boulder really knows how to throw a party. Heck, the organizers know how to throw a party! Thank you to all that make this possible and benefit such great organizations. We will DEFINITELY be back to as many of these as we can! read more

This ball is a re-creation not to miss. I went last year with my husband and every aspect of the ball screamed the 1940s and 1950s. The entertainment was on par, and grander then I could have ever imagined. The creators exemplify what parties from the past were. The WWII veterans that attend are just fabulous. I saw one man last year with his dress blues on and donning all of his medals, it melts my heart to know that man and many others risked their life for their country. I will be returning this year and every year to come. read more

I had a blast! It was my first time going and had a lot of fun. Even though there wasn't very many planes and other things to do as previous years as iv herd it was still fun. I don't know how you did it but you totally exceeded expectations again. Excellent venue-liked the rearrangement. Awesome bandstand and entertainers. Paid big money to see the GMO at the paramount years ago and this was a real value. Always appreciate how you honor the WWII veterans. Lost my dad last December. VIP seating was awesome. Lots of room. Great food. Drink coupons and party favors plus a tshirt. Above and beyond. Everything about this event says you aren't profit driven and that's what I appreciate about you. Sat with General Patton and Douglas MacArthur. What a treat. Costumes this year were better than ever. The quality of the orchestra, as Duke Ellington said, was beyond category. read more

Last year my husband and I decided to take our vacation in CO. We were fortunate enough to be in town for this amazing event. The hangar was decorated beautifully with 1940s planes and cars. There was so much to see between the historical artifacts and the amazing jazz bands and entertainment. The dancing was fun and they even held a pin-up costume contest. I would attend this event every year if I lived in CO. Five stars for a unique night full of fun and entertainment. read more

In summary: I'll skip it next year and avoid the lines and cheap imitations. The best part was the attendees dressed up, not what the event itself coordinated. After this year's ball I think the organizers have outgrown their event coordination skills. You have roughly 1000, 1200+ people in attendance. It's hard estimating big numbers but whether you were near the stage area, Rick's Café Americain or the four food trucks, it was crowded. Crowded didn't both me so much as the inability of the event to handle service for the crowd. There was a line of cars for miles as soon as you turned onto Valmont. The line was so bad because they kept everyone in single file the entire way. That was the first big wait. Getting in was quick but they had two tents selling drink tickets, second big wait. At this point, we've burned the over an hour of our experience in lines. Get a cop working the traffic light on the street to direct traffic, split your vehicle lines and park people in different areas of the field at the same time. At the stage, Winston Churchill is mumbling something I can't understand so we head over to Rick's Café in a hangar. Rick's café consists of a well painted backdrop and a sign. I've seen high school plays with better stage art. There are belly dancers but all we can see is the occasional head and hands in the air since they are performing at floor level with the guests watching so once the crowd is six or seven deep, you can't see much. The area around Rick's was cluttered with shopping to pick up last minute 40s items if you came empty handed. We decide to hang out in line yet again for pictures by an old jeep that was being manned by the Colorado Military Historical Group. Nice group of guys, had some small chat and moved on. Someone is talking on the main stage so we advance to the food trucks. This is where I've just finally had enough with the event coordination. Four trucks and unless you want a slice of pizza, the other three trucks have lines 50+ people deep. It's past seven and the truck operator keeps coming out to the line to tell people they have run out of this or that. We get our food after an HOUR of waiting in line. It's sometime past 8 now and we've had a weak cocktail a bit of food truck meh and stood around in line for the most of the night. Finally let's dance. We dance a few songs and the band stops for the ladies pin-up contest. 20 women parade on stage, we get a brief moment to dance again while the judges decide and then they parade all 20 on stage again, more deliberating, narrowed down to 3, lame questions to the 3 finalists and finally the judges select a winner. That was good 40-45 minute debacle. Here is the kicker. The women all looked lovely but the crowd was bored. It was just twenty women picked out of hundreds of women who attended that night whom all looked really nice in their 40s attire but it was not, a 40s pinup competition. Maybe a 40s costume contest. Then, they announce they are going to do the men's competition. I think I heard the crowd on the dance floor groan and we just decided leave. The only place we didn't have much of a wait was the bar service area post drink ticket line. They had enough bartenders that the staff was standing around bored. I wouldn't go again but I would have probably given the event two stars until I read this description of the event on yelp "These events help pay for the non profit's operating costs, staff and event development. After these expenses are paid, all net proceeds are donated to The Wounded Warriors Project and The Spirit of Flight Center Colorado. We have donated over $35,000 to our charities" Here is the kicker, if you have 1000+ people in attendance at a minimum of 42$ a head, that is $42,000 dollars. Then you have a minimum of one drink per attendee, some won't drink but plenty of attendees drink 2 or more drinks. Another $7,000 in revenue for drinks minimum. We're near $50,000 and that doesn't include their fee from the food trucks or vendors. Yes, there may be fees charged for the volunteers like the CMHG and the young marines guiding traffic, the event space, some staff, entertainers, but if they can only scrape $35k for donations since 2008, then I'm guessing the organizers have an obscene salary or other overheads to eat up the profits. I'm hoping the $35k in donations listed on this site is not current but my feeling is that this is a profit event for those running it that acts as a non-profit by giving away a very tiny margin after their expenses are covered. Yes it was nice seeing people not dressed in normal Colorado attire but most of the night was spent in lines and the event does a poor job of handling the needs of the crowd. Some people want to dance, some are into the recreations of nostalgia with impersonators. Split your venue and have band and music in one area, the era impersonating events in another. Your field was certainly big enough. read more

A terrific event! I started off the day getting my hair done by the beautiful hairstylists, who did a terrific job. And spent the rest of the evening taking pictures of WWII planes, Frank Sinatra, The Andrews Sisters, Bob Hope, and even a young Marilyn Monroe! I'm a bit of a veteran to these event's, my self and my wife love going to these and have never been disappointed. Want a trip back in to time then this is your event. Khyentse James has been a great friend and host of this event and she has always gone bigger and better every year. The old vets that come are great to see as well sit and have them tell a story or two, they can also dance and are more then likely going to out last you as well.lol So now that there is officially 3 events a year you can count I'll be at everyone of them. read more

This was our first year in attendance and probably the last. It has been really, really hot in Denver and it wasn't any different at this event. You would think that because we can get a 10 day forecast, the organizers could have predicted how hot it was going to be and ordered a couple of tents and perhaps a couple of misters to provide some shade for people to go to. There was almost no place that one could go to get out of the sun and we were in the middle of an open dirt field. The hanger was packed so that wasn't an option. We arrived a little after 5:00 and was out of there by 5:45. My sister and I did make it to the port a pot and at opening there wasn't any soap in one of the two dispensers. People who arrived first had to park the farthest away, didn't get that one at all. Paid for very expensive drink tickets and ended up giving them away as we left because of the heat. The best thing about this event is the fact that it supports Wounded Warriors and, seeing all of the people dressed to the nines. In closing, walking away 45 minutes after we got there was ok because our money supported a wonderful cause. read more
