Had a great lunch visit with and old friend of mine and my son a the food specials were amazing. Our server Wong was very cordial and made our visit enjoyable. In fact we were so pleased with her that I asked to speak to the manager to tell him how great she was and how pleased we were with the food items. I had high hopes for this place, given the elaborate interior design of the restaurant. The food was a complete disappointment. I ordered about six different dishes and all of them were extremely flavorless. The breaded meats and shrimp were very thickly breaded and the sauce was not that enjoyable. If there was a zero star option I would give it but the one star is fitting because the service was good. We hadn't had Yen Ching in years. Since our normal choice was closed, we decided to drive 20 minutes to pick up dinner. We remembered YC being great food for a fair price. What we got Monday night seemed to be day old reheated muck. I'm pretty sure the chicken and vegetables were out of a can and most of the dishes tasted off. It was obviously not made to order. When we got there to pick up our food, we were not greated. Very dry and cold interaction. If they had excellent food, i would have given a pass on the service, but here we are. Very disappointed. I do love that the server is quite familiar with the menu, so when I struggled to identify what I was looking for, she assured me that they had what was on the menu. The frozen boxed Chinese food you get at the grocery is a 10 compared to this. My husband and I split a meal and didn't eat half of it. It was bland and the meat had an old taste. The guy at the cash register didn't ask how the food was, so I waited until after we paid to tell him it wasn't good. I didn't want him to think that we were trying to get a free meal. No apology, he said that that is how they always make. I'm guessing that it wouldn't be any better next time so there would be no need for a return trip. read more

So, I went to UE. Traveled and lived all over the last 10-ish years. On my way through town for a funeral, I stopped to eat. My god. I forgot how honestly and genuinely good this place is. I'm NOT exaggerating even 1% when I say this is the best standard-American-style, Chinese food in the country. The style is modest, reserved flavors. It doesn't have crazy fusion, or gimmicks. While I was being a total pig, I heard a couple next to me telling the waiter "we live 75 miles south of here in rural Kentucky.... but we took at detour. You see it's our 42nd wedding anniversary. And we just thought, we need some food that's good for the soul." He then proceeded to tel the waiter that they've been coming here for nearly two decades when they pass through. Yen Ching has long been a family favorite for Chinese food. Eat in or take out it is all delicious. My favorite General Tso Shrimp has a light breading which gives it great crispness and that magical Tso sauce I love so well. The hot and sour soup is tied for my favorite along with the seafood soup for two. YC eggrolls are in a class by themselves. They are seasoned perfectly and never greasy. We have been going to Yen Ching for many years and have spend countless birthdays and holidays celebrating with authentic Chinese cuisine. As I like to say, Yen Ching is godliness. I honestly have NEVER had anything bad there. Everything is superb. The food comes out in giant plates that are steaming hot, my favorites are probably the cashew chicken, sizzling rice soup for two, crab rangoon, twin diced birds nest, and definitely empress chicken. But you'll never go wrong with anything you choose. The service is great, and they have people coming back on such a regular basis, everyone--staff and customers--are on a first name basis! I always stop to talk to the owners for at least several minutes whether I'm there picking up food or sitting down to eat. They are simply wonderful, the nicest people. Always ask about my family, how my classes are going, and more. Coming home from school, its the first place I eat, and sometimes even going back to school I'll get carry out for once I'm back! My friend from NYC tried it and said its better than ANY Chinese food she had in New York. Honestly, I can't say enough good about this place. My family has been dining here, since it's opening. We're 3 generations of avid Yen Ching lovers! After Charlie sold it, they've cut corners quite a bit. Our family favorite is the hot braised shrimp! We would spend well over a hundred dollars since some of us like a light spice vs. a couple who love the 5 hot . We picked up 4 orders along with their crab rangoon (which is unbeatable in the city, in our opinion) & their hot & sour soup.I have NEVER tasted the hot braised shrimp sooo sugary in my 45yrs of life! I know a lot of Chinese/Americanized establishments stretch their sauces with sugar, corn syrup, etc... I never dreamed that Yen Ching would do that to their amazing food. I called to complain & they said no refunds or exchanges. Which with post-covid, I can understand, but you really should take care of your customers! We decided to give it one more try, a year later. Thinking, maybe it was just a bad batch, new cook, etc....anything to stay in denial lol. I took one smell and could smell the sugar! It was even sweeter!!! I'm so sad and disappointed that they let it get to this point. Keep in mind, hot braised dishes here are in a brown garlic sauce. Not a sweet garlic sauce or garlic sugar sauce. We no longer go there & after 2yrs if searching, you can't find anything like it as it's their specialty. I'm sure they have other delicious options, but this is the dish we went there for and it's gone with the wind....just gone. I suggest if you do go, ask for no sugar? I have been, off and on, dining at Yen Ching since the 80s. I have always loved the food, the owners and the decor since their opening. I have watched their families grow up. Food: Their pot stickers are to die for. I've always enjoyed mu shu pork with mandarin pancakes, twice cooked pork, and hunan beef. For a while they had a Chinese menu that included prawns and real egg ,rolled egg rolls. My absolute favorite are the specialty noodle category with noodles in plum sauce and combination soup noodles(with sea cucumber) I have yet to see either on another menu anywhere, and so very delicious. I've been coming to Yen Ching for over 20 years and it's always a nostalgic moment when I come back now that I'm living away. The decor is so detailed and really enhances the experience and coming back again today, I realized how nice it is to actually have that level of decor is a restaurant like this. Prices are very reasonable and portions are fairly large. The lunch menu is more limited, but the dinner menu is extensive and everything I've tried had been tasty. I've never tried the buffet so can't vouch for the quality of that. Having been to China a few times and worked in a Chinese restaurant for a few years, I know most American Chinese restaurants don't typically make food legitimately spicy upon request which is one thing that bums me out here. The last two times I asked for extra spicy on a dish that was already supposed to be spicy and it was barely spicy but they did give me a side of chili paste to mix in once I mentioned it. My mom has always been a huge fan of their egg rolls, but at some point 5-10 years ago I think they downgraded the quality of those a bit- but they're still better than many places which tend to over-fry them. It's nice to see the owner and family in the restaurant most times that I'm there. I definitely have a soft spot in my heart for this place. read more

While I love Chinese food and I do think Yen Ching does a good job with their food, it was always a "once-in-awhile" sort of meal as I do find it a bit pricier than other Chinese restaurants in Evansville. Its on Green River, so not hard to find at all and when you walk in, it is like being transported out of Evansville. The decor isn't tacky, like some Chinese restaurants, although some may find it a bit much, but the Chinese appreciate detail. It family style, which I like. It is a nice change from the individual orders and portions you get at other restaurants. When you order, they bring out a plate/bowl of food which you could just eat yourself, but ideally you would share with the others at your table. That being said you should watch how much you order as you can easily end up with far too much food. Of their soups, the Hot and Sour Soup is my favourite. I still have not found a Won Ton Soup that rivals the one I remember from my favourite Chinese place in California... The egg rolls are nice, but nothing surprising. The lemon chicken is very good (another one of my favourite dishes that I am highly critical about), the sauce has the right amount of sour and sweet and the chicken is nicely cooked. The Mongolian Beef is also very good. Sometimes you get Mongolian Beef and there is either barely any beef or the beef is so tough, but Yen Ching's is not like that. My favourite dish they do is the Green Bean with Shredded Pork. The green beans are nice and crisp, but tender, paired with the bite size pieces of tender pork. No heavy, gloopy sauce, just a nice flavor of garlic. All of the fried rice choices are nice, but I am partial to having a nice bowl of steamed rice... 1) so you can use chop sticks and 2) to let the dishes speak for themselves. They have my favourite fortune cookies as well... they don't taste like cardboard like other fortune cookies... AND they have these almond cookies that are wonderful! I always buy a bag on the way out for the rest of the week =). read more

The house specials are so good that you'll not be going anywhere else. The "Hot braised shrimp" item is superb and they offer 3 heat -flavor levels which are expertly exacted! The hottest is my personal favorite, but be careful if you're not sure of how hot.*wink*. My picky-eater son use to frequent this place so much that the staff nearly crowned him as chief icon! Crab rangoon is authentic and unlike fast-food Asian that tastes like chewy wallpaper. The appetizer plate is interesting and can make for a meal if you're not up for eating too much! Seating is usually fast and servers friendly. Quality is fresh and nicely presented. To get there, go to North Green River Road on the east side. Turn LEFT if going South, RIGHT if going North. The parking can be crampy in the front area, so try parking in the side or back lot. read more

Well, once again Yelp users in the Tri-state area prove that they wouldn't know good food if it fell out of the sky, landed in their mouths, and whistled Dixie. Going against our better judgement, we took a risk and decided to try Yen Ching due to the rave reviews on Yelp. What a mistake. Heaven's to Betsy, Tri-state diners, take a vacation to New York, San Francisco, or Boston and try some authentic Chinese cuisine! Live a little! You clearly have not enjoyed good Chinese food, because if you had, you wouldn't be singing the praises of this place. We tried the vegetarian egg rolls, which were flavorless and average. For our entree's I decided on something safe, Kung Pao Chicken -- not exactly authentic Chinese, I know, but I thought that at least they would get this most basic Americanized Chinese dish right. NOPE. Toxic levels of salt, chopped bits of chicken and mushroom, and huge pieces of green bell pepper. WTF?!? Quite simply, it was vile. My wife ordered the vegetarian bean curd dish. It was in some kind of tomato sauce....Chinese food, in TOMATO SAUCE! Seriously? Oh and did I mention, it had pork in it. That's right, the vegetarian bean curd had tiny strips of fatty pork laced throughout. We left 5 minutes after the food was brought to the table. Very disappointing. We won't be back. Avoid. read more
