    I cannot recommend Yolo Barre enough! I joined Yolo Barre in early 2023 when I was experiencing infertility issues. Barre was just what I needed- it was a fantastic physical outlet and positive supportive community. After being welcomed into the community I was pregnant within a month. I continued to work out multiple times a week throughout my pregnancy. The instructors were knowledgeable and worked with my growing belly in safe ways so I was able to still get a great workout in. I stayed in shape throughout my pregnancy, was doing jumping jacks on my due date, and had an incredibly fast labor and delivery (I was told my pelvic floor was incredibly strong and asked if I was an athlete in the hospital- thanks barre). My healthy baby is growing and active. I have been continuing to workout as a mother. The welcoming community at barre is much needed time for me and my body in the afternoons. I was fitting into my pre-pregnancy clothes within 6 months post partum and am in great shape to keep up with my daughter. I have made great friends at barre and just feel so welcomed every day I walk into the studio. No matter who or what you are going through in life Yolo Barre is there for you. Highly highly recommend.

    Absolutely LOVE this place. So full of positive energy and good vibes all around. This is a very no judgement zone while encouraging each person to push themselves to the best of their ability. Everyone seems to be at different levels too so that makes it even more welcoming! I am first and foremost a HIIT and powerlifting junky. I can throw around quite a bit of weight and have no issue with high intensity workouts so I thought this would be a piece of cake! I was so very wrong. Barre is challenging! But in a good way. By focusing on posture, endurance, body weight manipulation and sustainable strength, I have found new balance and core strength I haven't been able to achieve in regular weightlifting. Every class is different so you'll never get bored. It challenges your physical and mental strength during class and helps you carry it through the rest of your day. I have some pretty sensitive knees and lower back from lifting so working this in regularly as a low/no impact workout has been hugely helpful in gaining strength without breaking myself. The owner is incredibly knowledgeable and friendly. Every instructor is dedicated to making sure everyone is getting the most out of their workout and are always striving to ensure everyone understands the movements while being safe. I would encourage anyone to give this place a try! Whether you're a newbie to exercise in general or your looking for a fun new way to challenge yourself, I think you'll have one hell of a good workout!

I had heard Kaia was a great place for women of all she's and fitness levels. It was close to my house. Perfect! I stopped by at a time when there were no classes going on. There was one instructor there and she barely made eye contact with me when I entered. It was clear throughout our exchange that she was really not interested in answering my questions. She kept referring me to the website. It was almost as though I had annoyed her by coming in and checking it out. To be perfectly honest, I was pretty disappointed. It was pretty clear that if this was going to be my instructor, I would not get the encouragement I would need. Sadly, I decided I wasn't going to come back.

In the past two years I tried almost every gym in Davis (I went as far as Natomas) but I stopped looking for anything else after my first day at Kaia. They have all kinds of classes, and instructors help you modify each exercise as needed. Nobody cares how you look, what you are wearing and your fitness level. This is a group of women of all ages who come to challenge themselves (whatever level of fitness they are at) and want to enjoy their hour of exercise. Everyone was very engaging from day one at Kaia. This is so refreshing! I made real friends. This is an amazing place, with wonderful instructors and owners.

She first teaches you the basic fundamental exercises and how to use of the equipment but Laura's classic pilates instruction quickly develops a real awareness for your own body. You will learn to work with ALL the parts of your body (including the brain!) and even the transitions between exercises are important to keep the work one seamless continuous flow. I had a lesson with owner Laura Cotler, and it was one of the most eye-opening workouts. She spent a lot of time going over the fundamentals of breath work, alignment, and getting me comfortable with the equipment. It was a great mix of feeling like I could actually do some cool stuff already (shoulder bridges, anyone?) and realizing I was like jello in muscles I didn't even know I had. I really like Laura's teaching style, in fact she reminded me of my former ballet instructor. She was very confident and has an eye for detail that seemed intuitive. I can be kind of a sensitive flower when it comes to one-on-one training and she kept it relaxed and focused without pressure. She seems like a real person and not a crazed workout Barbie. She also addressed every one of my concerns I had that other yoga instructors, even physical therapists had blown off, like ankle pronation and hyperextension in my knees. I also love the free long sleeved stretchy black logo T-shirt I got with my first lesson! I wore it around town the rest of the day and felt super svelte. Some other cool things: 1. The studio is open and light with cork floors and feels and looks very clean. 2. Bathroom is clean and well-stocked. 3. Free 3 hour parking in the garage directly behind the studio. 4. Unlike yoga where everyone has to be silent squirrel, Pilates studios often have a couple private lessons and classes running at once without creating distraction. I don't like to do my workouts in silence. Makes me nervous. Unlike the gym though, everyone seems very focused on their own work. No "how you doin'?" 5. I bought a package deal for private lessons which saved me some dough. 6. Online booking for classes and private lessons. I scheduled another private lesson with Laura for next week and I'll be counting the days!

I would 1000% recommend doing one-on-one training sessions--it's the best money I've ever spent on myself. Thanks to our workouts, I had an incredibly easy delivery and post-partum recovery. Tal radiates positive energy! She kept me smiling, fit, motivated, and--most importantly--SAFE throughout my pregnancy. Her workouts were not only fun but also incorporate many moves that can actually be used during labor. She was always in-tune to my needs and would adapt her routines--even mid-workout--to make sure I was safe and pain-free. I also loved that she emphasized important foundations (e.g. proper breathing technique, connecting breath to core and pelvic floor, safe ways to get in/out of bed, ways to avoid diastasis recti, etc). I continue to use those skills daily. Not only is Tal a mama herself, she has years of experience as a specialized prenatal/post-partum personal trainer. She even stays up-to-date with ACOG recommendations and takes refresher maternal health courses. As a physician, I was impressed with the depth of her knowledge. If you train with her, you get access to her Strong Mama Fitness online for free--another incredible resource. Although she is no longer local in the Bay Area, she is available for 1-on-1 virtual training via Zoom. Our virtual sessions were super convenient, all without sacrificing quality. There are various exercises every week that cater to different levels of fitness or how one feels for the day. This is very helpful as I don't have to worry about whether a particular exercise is safe for a certain stage of pregnancy. Tal has been very helpful and knowledgeable, and is available to answer any questions. Love having the convenience of this personal trainer like program from the comforts of home. Highly recommend Strong Mama Fitness!
