When you're a big city mouse and spend a few days in the N. Georgia Mtns, the most you expect in terms of breakfast is something akin to Waffle House. If you're lucky, you get the local version of Waffle House. It is rare you stumble upon something like Yonder. They had me at the scratch biscuit photo. The place is small and run by an eclectic, hipster looking bunch, who couldn't be nicer or provide better service. The vibe is laid back and ambiance very "Edison lightbulb current" but not annoyingly so. Now to the important things...the FOOD. It's a perfect menu in terms of size and variety. Not too big, just enough. Everything is served in large bowls and everything we ate was DAMN good. Lots of the dishes feature a biscuit or grits, which are real grits, Anson Mill and have a thick consistency and really nice flavor. And the locally smoked bacon? Oh Lort. We ordered the following: 1. Yogurt (a legit kind) with options of Coconut Cashew, Blueberry Hemp and All Grain. My picky 14 yo loved the Blueberry. This is the healthiest, tastiest yogurt bowl. 2. Southern Benedict: the bacon and a hit of Kale that was cooked in the bacon and with a biscuit instead of muffin???? To die for. Best Benedict I've ever had. And I've had a lot. 3. Pimento Cheese sammie with bacon: SO good and they make their own bread. 4. One other egg dish I can't recall. But it was good. Bottomline: you can't go wrong here, folks. We weren't expecting much as Yonder is breakfast-centric, but this was the best meal we had in Franklin and Highlands. The biscuits and bread are truly special and the effort and simplicity of every ingredient shines through. The mushrooms I ordered were white oysters, not the cultivated variety in the box, but likely picked or foraged. For someone who has spent my entire life in pursuit of great food and has a chanterelle honey home near my home, I appreciate the simple perfection of thoughtfully selected ingredients and not over thinking it. Yonder is a small cafe with amazing food. Homemade biscuits and my son told me the grits are good (I don't eat grits). I had French toast which was also good. Portions were just right and priced right too. I was a little confused why there was no refill for iced coffee (had to buy a second one). Meh. I've experienced better. It has a quaint & friendly atmosphere. Seating for about 20. Cooked to order. My fried egg was cooked to perfection. I'm guessing my bill was messed up, because for 1 egg, 1 piece of toast & some greens (no beverage, no meat), I was charged $12. Price for breakfast for 2 was $31+. I saw some good reviews on Yelp, so I thought I would give it a try. Allen and his wife couldn't be better hosts. Both are friendly and welcoming. I ordered the Basic which was two fried eggs, cooked perfectly, bacon, skillet potatoes, and cinnamon toast. The bacon is something else. Not like bacon you've had anywhere. It was cooked crispy and tasted like it just came out of the smoker. If you order nothing else, order the bacon. In fact, if you are a vegetarian and can have one cheat meal, this bacon should be a part of it. The cinnamon toast was about an inch thick and very good. Cinnamon flavor with out being overly sweet. There are several places that serve breakfast between Franklin, NC and Clayton, GA but I'm going back here again tomorrow. read more

If you're in Franklin, this is basically the only non-chain locally-sourced breakfast option. It's the most Asheville-esque place around, which makes it stand out from the rest of the comfort food breakfast joints. If you go, you'll see what I mean. The restaurant itself is small, seats about 20. If you sit at the bar, you can see your breakfast being prepared by swift, joking, multi-tasking chefs. The menu is limited, but still has something for everyone, from a yogurt bowl to a piled high breakfast bowl filled with grits, biscuits, gravy, eggs and bacon. Everything that came out of the kitchen looked bomb and had me wishing I had the appetite to try more things. I tried the southern Benedict, which was flavorful but not a true Benedict as there was no poached egg (a little disappointing) or Hollandaise. Oh well, still tasty, fresh and made with high quality ingredients. I also tried the rye flour pancake which was out of this world. Served with real maple syrup and fresh fruit, this fluffy delight was a home run. Most importantly, the staff was friendly, attentive, and helpful. The grits were delicious but the portion was small. My mimosa was the best part of my meal as it was a double. We ordered French toast to share. Both slices of the bread we almost 2-inches thick. The toast was very dry on the inside and dense like pound cake. It was clear that the bread wasn't soaked in an egg mixture prior to cooking. Stopped by Yonder while traveling from Sylva, NC. Although the food was good, the service was very slow. My fiancé and I ordered the yonder bowl. My bowl consisted of grits, eggs and sausage and we waited over an hour for our food to be served. We watched as the table of two beside us (who arrived about 15 minutes or so after us) ordered and enjoyed their basic meal of grits, eggs, bacon and biscuit. Although, we were offered countless cups of coffee, I needed food as I have a medical condition which requires food with medication. I would have liked to give this place a higher rating, but we were disappointed with the slow service. The server kept asking us about the quality of the food. For me, It's not all about the quality of food, it's about the total experience. I don't know if slow service is the norm there, therefore I will be hesitant in stopping there again.
