I've often wondered what it would be like to stay here and I can tell you this Hotel is in a great location with friendly staff who are knowledgeable about things to do in the area. While my mattress could be a little more comfortable I was assured those are up on the list of improvements. I highly recommend this hotel over others in the area. Stayed here for two nights with my kiddo in a Chesapeake balcony king room as a small "before school starts mini-vacay." Front desk was friendly and texted when our room was ready to check-in, around 1:00pm, which was great. Our room and bathroom were clean (shower, toilet, sink), comfortable bed and pillows, great balcony view as advertised, and a TV, coffee maker, microwave, and fridge. These came in handy, as my little one is always hungry for snacks throughout the day, so we saved money on heating up some microwaveable Mac and cheese, pizza, chicken nuggets, etc. for lunches. Also, hot popcorn on the balcony at night was lovely. The pool and grounds are very pretty; think Magnolia trees, crepe Myrtles, wrought iron chairs and a gazebo. My little one enjoyed the pool both evenings before our awesome dinners at Yorktown Pub (a York County institution). Pool towels are available, too. We met the owners, who live on the property, and they couldn't have been more pleasant; very personable people. The complimentary breakfast was perfect for us, too. English muffins, bagels, pastries, fruit, cereal, yogurt, juice, milk, coffee, etc., exactly what we needed to start each day. The lobby is beautifully redone, and the owner said that's their vision for the rest of the hotel. I was a bit apprehensive reading some bad reviews, but it was exactly what we wanted and we had a great stay. I look forward to going back and seeing how the rest of the renovations turn out. Also, as the only hotel on the water there, their prices are totally fair. You can walk to everything, have a parking spot, and again, a beautiful view. This is my first experience with them. I cancelled my reservation at 8pm 3 nights prior to my stay. They would not honor my refund, not would they honor what their employee Kevin stated about the refund. The employee I spoke to over the phone LeeLee or Layla was rude. I wouldnt recommend this hotel at all. Also I expect a prompt nasty response from the owner. Can see he/she is not accommodating to his guests. Wish I had read the multiple bad reviews prior to making my reservation. They won't get far with their scrappy customer service. read more

I had high hopes for this place, but unfortunately, it fell short in several key areas. The room locks were questionable, cleanliness was lacking, and there was a persistent funky smell throughout the property. It's clear the place needs some serious upkeep. What really shocked me, though, came after my stay when I read through other guest reviews. I've never seen an owner engage with customers in such a distasteful and unprofessional manner. Rather than accepting feedback with grace and using it to improve the business, the owner often responds with rude, dismissive, and downright hostile replies. This is business malpractice 101. We had to cancel our reservation due to severe weather conditions affecting our travel plans. When we called the front desk approximately five hours past the cancellation window, we were told over the phone that it would be okay. Based on this assurance, we expected the cancellation to be honored. Unfortunately, the hotel still charged our card. When we followed up with another call, we were told that the front desk would contact the owner to discuss the situation. About 15 minutes later, we received a call back simply stating that "there was nothing they could do." No explanation, no empathy, and no flexibility--even after being told earlier that our cancellation would be accepted. To make matters worse, when we expressed our concerns in a review, the owner responded in a dismissive and unprofessional manner, calling it "mindless." A look at other negative reviews shows a consistent pattern: rather than taking feedback constructively, the owner often replies in an unkind and defensive tone. This is not the kind of hospitality or professionalism guests should expect. We understand that policies exist for a reason, but customer service should include empathy, clarity, and respectful communication--none of which we experienced. We arrived to discover that the beds were so uncomfortable, the springs poked through, and the hardest mattress. We asked to speak with the owner/manager to find a solution. We were greeted by a nasty, rude owner who walked up to us with a defensive attitude. We offered to buy mattress toppers or have them change our room, but neither suggestion was met with any compromise. He stated all the hotel's mattresses were the same. Right from the start, he told us to leave because it was apparent we would not be happy. I've never encountered such rude behavior from a person who owns a business. He has no business being in business, and I'm pretty sure this hotel will fail under his management. The only positive thing is that he refunded our money. Management is fun to talk with because they're very friendly, the entire staff! There's a lot to see and do and walk to within 10 minutes. Park and explore. Peaceful, relaxing overlooking the bay. Taking in the Local luxurious colonial gardens on the way to Morning coffee or browsing local art. Grab the trolley to the victory center, lay on the beach or by the pool. Or just people watch. Thursday in the summer has live music on the green, farmers market on Saturday mornings... Close enough to Williamsburg if you want more shops. We really enjoy watching the storms come in in the late afternoons,dolphins swim by at tea time. Only if you have no objection to dropping $200 or more a night to stay where investors are merely putting lipstick on a poor old pig is this place worth considering. Formerly the Duke of York Hotel since the mid-60's, its greatest remaining value is that the river and a beach are still across the road. You won't see it on the website but the sign out front warns "Pardon Our Mess"...and that's exactly what guests at the "new" Yorktown Beach Hotel are still doing nearly a year since investors commenced work but kept selling rooms. As of early Summer 2022, renovations have left the first floor gutted. Every soda machine and all but one ice maker are gone. The "new" room furnishings are a mix of the cheapest motel pieces, carpet and drapes that are available. Worn-out lighting fixtures remain, as do the well-used 60's style bath fixtures including old, poorly flushing toilets in tiny bathrooms that still lack any vent fan. I couldn't simply call the front desk for housekeeping that never came because the room phones have all been ripped out. When I went walking to find the new owner, he didn't seem shocked about electric sockets so old that you plugs simply fall out, or the hazard of missing wall plug covers that left bare wires exposed. He did offer this "consideration:" I could get out immediately and go find somewhere else to stay for my three-day vacation if I wanted. (In all fairness, he did ultimately have a wallplate cover installed and allow the TV to show more than just one channel.) There may come a day when proper, quality renovations might be made and more guest-friendly management is in place. Until then, I say avoid the view from the K-Mart plastic chairs on the balcony of this Bates Motel and find a nearby charming inn or B&B to enjoy this wonderful part of America. read more

Let me just start by saying I would NEVER consider staying at this hotel ever again. My husband and I attended a family event in Yorktown and decided to get a room and spend the weekend in Yorktown. We got a pet friendly room. The room was absolutely disgusting. Needing a renovation is an understatement. This hotel needs to be gutted. The room was dirty, trash behind the nightstands, wallpaper tearing off of the walls, stained furniture, stains on the ceiling, floors, bathtub and ceiling. Carpet is very old and disgusting. Cobwebs in the corners and the room smelled musty. Then to top it off, as we are sitting and watching television we see a HUGE COCKROACH CLIMBING ON THE WALL!! I just pray we didn't bring anything home with us (bedbugs, roaches, etc). They didn't clean the room while we were out or refresh the towels. Nothing. This hotel isn't cheap either. When I pay $240 a night for a hotel room I would expect it to be clean and sanitary at the very least. I wouldn't recommend staying here. Nor will I ever return read more

This place is perfectly nice. Not swanky, but just fine. I don't know what other reviewers are complaining about as that was not our experience. Yes, there are touches that remind you this hotel was not built yesterday but our room was spacious, clean and had the modern conveniences I would expect. Plus, the view! Most rooms overlook the beach and the river. DofY is within walking distance of pretty much everything you would want to do in Yorktown. There is fine dining, casual and a pub just steps away. The location does have a bit of a premium price tag to it. But we asked if they offered a military discount and they gladly obliged. read more

This place was awful. Our room had mold on the walls, the furniture needs to be replaced badly. The fridge, microwave and coffee pot were all connected to a power strip. The view was the only reason we stayed. When it was mentioned to the manager at check out he was going to look into it but offered no follow up or apology. What a let down. read more

Booked it for the location but didn't check the reviews first -- big no no! We were in room #400. The room's view was gorgeous, but the room itself was... lacking. There were several bugs, sporadic stains on the comforter, a moldy smell, and no ventilation. The coffee maker had muck inside of it, so I had to clean it out before heating up water, which I ended up tossing since it came out with chunks anyways. I was preparing to go to my friend's wedding and needed to dry my hair, but the hair dryer didn't work (despite trying it in several plugs and resetting the circuit). I went to call the front desk... and realized that there was no phone in the room! Instead, I called via my cell phone using their website's number, but it was busy. So I walked downstairs, received another (wall??) unit from the front desk, and then walked upstairs... only to find out that the replacement ALSO didn't work. So, I just attended my friend's wedding that night with wet hair. Wouldn't recommend it for nearly $250/night, even for the location. read more

Checked in on Sunday, 8/28/22 and we were greeted with by Lea-Lea (5-stars) with a great smile and welcoming spirit. Room was clean and spacious even with the Jacuzzi taking up 1/3 of the room(4.5stars). Loved the onsite free parking and the accessibility. (5-stars). Hotel Front Desk staff, Hailey (5-stars) was awesome and informative when we visited with her on several occasions. Even though the hotel was undergoing renovations, we never heard any loud construction noise or experienced any dust or smells usually associated with large scaled renovations. (Thumbs-up!) Unfortunately, there is one complaint that stands out and I can't let go! We stayed on on the second floor of the Chesapeake building that indicated beach/river front views. However, views were VERY obstructed by the row of blooming trees(when standing) and balcony railing (when seated) that was eye level. PLEASE CUT THE TREES DOWN TO HALF THEIR HEIGHT!!!! And slim up the balcony decorative railing for a truly beach and river front view. (1-star) Overall, our stay was wonderful and we plan to visit again, and requesting a room on a higher floor. The hotel is about the location and the view. Older hotel under new mansgement. They have suites but we opt for the balcony view of the York River and the lovely town. Other than suites, the rooms are basic with standard bathroom with combination tub and shower. Evening staff was pleasant and helpful. Note there is a residential apartment you don't want to be next to, cooking odors spill over to rooms adjacent. Decent price and love the location. read more

I visited with a friend and this is an $80 a night room if that- lawn furniture, no ventilation in bathrooms, the hallway smelt like mold, went downstairs to a woman who was clearly drinking as our "concierge" who gestured me 1 second while she chatted on her cell phone to ask about ice because there was no phone in the room... I rarely get any time off of work- views great but I wish I stayed somewhere else for the money and just drove to the beach. The owner is completely rude and wants nothing to do with any issues... basically told us he had no time. Warning don't book here just because it states "pet friendly". Hotel is advertised as pet friendly and quickly takes your pet deposit, but the owner who also lives in the hotel (strange enough in itself) does not want animals here. My family and I have always taken our 30 lb well behaved dog on trips with us; hotels, condos, air bnbs, etc. And have never once had a complaint. The owner, Matt, who I am 1000% sure will respond to this as he has with any other negative reviews, is a total jerk. I have never been treated so poorly by management, let alone the owner of a facility. He complained of "incessant barking" from my dog which was a total and blatant lie. He harassed my family and I from the moment we checked in. Even his front desk staff was embarrassed with his actions and outwardly expressed so. I feel terrible for them. We were given a full refund, however, after we moved rooms 45 minutes into our stay and then we're chased down at 8 o'clock in the morning by the owner in regards to a barking dog who was not even barking. Total and complete waste of precious family time and energy. I will be attaching a YouTube link with the video recording of him standing outside of our vehicle next to our room, yelling and threatening us in front of our two young kids about how we need to get out of his hotel due to our dog barking. Please also note that you will not hear a single bark throughout the video... Because there was no barking from said dog. The owner is belligerent and clearly has no idea how to operate a business treating guests the way he does. Please look through any other negative reviews and check his responses to them before booking here, please also keep in mind that he LIVES here on premise so be weary because he will be watching and listening to your every move. I don't foresee a thriving waterfront hotel under his ownership, hopefully someone else can scoop it up and save it before he tarnishes it further. Worst hotel stay ever. For $158 per night this hotel should come with a disclaimer that says "Absolutely no refunds" and "Rent As Is". There were spider webs in the shower. The tub was not clean and had hair left from the last guest. The coffee maker was broken. And the peak of the hotel stay was that we had to share the room with roaches. At least they ran under the refrigerator when I turned on the lights. Never again will I stay here. Oh. It gets one star because the front desk clerk was apologetic and gave us another room. Vacationers beware!! This hotel pulled a bait and switch!! Booked a late arrival 2 night stay at Duke of York online 2-3 months in advance . When I arrived late that night, they refused to honor the rate I was quoted on my confirmation. Took twenty minutes for the poor front desk associate to tech the manager by phone. Initially, the manager refused to speak to me. Once she begrudgingly accepted my call, she refused to approve my online rate and essentially told me to pay up or go home, but the owner would be in the next morning. The owner was even worse to deal with. In a busy lobby, he accused me of fabricating my confirmation that I had printed out from their booking website. He was incredibly rude and spoke down to me the entire time, even stooping so low as to call me stupid at one point during our conversation. He, too, told me to pay up or go home and refused to honor their online generated rate. The ONLY positive experience that came out of this horrible visit was the fact that I had my second night refunded without penalty and I was able to go to a nicer hotel where the staff actually cared and took care of their patrons. read more

We booked this hotel because of the location, you really can't beat it! As for customer service, I thought it was poor. Upon check in, the woman at the desk was very uninterested in talking with us, she barely spoke 3 words making our interaction very awkward. She didn't even tell us what room we were in, just said to go to the third floor.. our room was dated with newer furniture, the bed was comfortable and felt clean, the bathroom was small, and average, the balcony was AMAZING! The elevator in the hotel was very slow, and constantly very hot, it seemed to have a lot of issues, I suggest taking the stairs. My impression is that the hotel staff knows they have a monopoly on the location, and doesn't really care about the way it looks or customer service. **BEWARE** Outdated hotel that should be called a motel instead. Very unfriendly staff; especially Marjorie at the front desk. She was indignant when I asked her why she did not send someone to repair the crack in our ceiling AFTER she was the one who offered to do so. She just stared at me sternly when I mentioned it was her suggestion, not mine. This was after she called me "honey" and "sweetie" non-stop at check in. It was borderline condescending to hear it! We arrived at 2:50 to check in and were turned away without explanation. When we returned, she said " our room was ready minutes after we arrived." Talk about a huge inconvenience! The best part was I was originally quoted a rate of $85, but once she realized it was the weekend of the Christmas parade, the price jumped to $150. Interesting since she gave the couple checking in right in front of us the $85 rate. I asked her about it and received the icy stare she is quick to give to guests. She is an elderly woman that may need to be trained on how to treat all customers. Note: Ceiling was cracked in our room and there was no chain latch on the bedroom door. The hotel manager kicked me, my wife, and my 7 month old daughter off the property for saying something when a tow truck dropped a car on its front bumper multiple times. While strapping my 7 month old into her stroller, she continued to berate me and tell me to get my 'butt' off 'her property'. Totally uncalled for, and all of this in front of my wife and child. All kinds of shenanigans and tomfoolery going on at this hotel, but the food at the island grille was fantastic. The owner of the restaurant rents property and should not be judged by the idiocy, shortsightedness, and narrow mindedness of the manager of the York hotel, Vivian Harris. read more

The only option for staying on the water in Yorktown. The hotel (it should be called the Duke of York Motel) seems to be aware of that, because the place is way overpriced and a bit run down. I think some of the rooms may be more updated than others, because I stayed here for a wedding and my room was old and had a gross 70's flowery bedspread. I was staying on the fourth floor in a separate building from some other folks in the party who were on the water. They had nice white newer comforters and their beds seemed to be more comfortable. My shower clearly hadn't been used in a while, because brown water started to come out and I had to let it run for about five minutes. My friend's room had a backup in the tub and she had to shower in knee deep water. Our room did not come with an iron/ironing board and the safe was broken. The WiFi only worked for a few hours. That being said, the hotel was very accommodating for a large and loud wedding party. We were up until all hours of the night celebrating and they only had a few problems with us. The price was $245 for two nights which I think is outrageous for that old of a hotel. For that price, I could go stay at the Westin somewhere in another city. It's a shame, because Water Street is absolutely adorable, but I don't think I'd stay here again. However, I would eat at the Island Grille (the restaurant inside the hotel) again. They had an awesome club sandwich and a decent breakfast at cheap prices (see separate review). read more

To be honest, this hotel is not the nicest or most updated hotel I've been and if the same hotel/motel would be located on the highway I would probably not pay more than 60 bucks a night... -The very good: the location, its just there on the beach/river... Yorktown is actually very nice, safe, family oriented; has on Saturday a farmers market... etc - The good: the front desk people is actually polite and nice and try to be helpful; the check in is at 3-4pm but they allowed us to use their parking lot since way earlier... they also have a restaurant on site - The not that good: actually the hotel itself... its needs updating; things like: old carpets, noisy ac, no ac in the old elevator (like an old sauna), old doors and really small bathrooms... to name some areas of improvement In summary, we keep coming back because we really like Yorktown and the hotel's prime location. read more

The only reason I give this place a star is because of the location. First night, flipped up the covers and there were bed bugs (room 511). Got moved to the last room by the nice staff who saw and confirmed and completed our stay. Was supposed to be contacted by a manager, Vivian Harris, on several occasions to reason about the incident. Every day for about a week and a half, finally got ahold of her, was very rudely accused of not having the bed bugs from having witnesses and pictures to back it up. If you stay at this hotel I hope you aren't planning on sleeping. I don't even know how this is possible but the mattress sounded like it was plastic even though it was not. The slightest bit of movement and it made a noise like you were trying to position yourself on a rubber inner tube. The AC unit sounded as if you were on a freight train. I always pack ear plugs on trips but they had little effect on the noise. I got about 1.5 hours of sleep at the cost of 150 a night. Not sure about you but I can think of several other things that cost 100 dollars an hour and are not nearly as excruciating. The view and location of this place are really the only redeeming qualities. It is a gorgeous view right on the beach. I love Yorktown and wish there were a real hotel in the area since I will definitely NOT be staying here again. read more

I stayed here one night so the girls could hang out at the beach. It really was a great view of the beach and water! The hotel smelled like its age but nothing I couldn't live with (esp. for the price). The room and bathroom were clean. My only complaint was the AC unit. It is right next to one of the beds....you will freeze if you are stuck on that side. I hung a towel over the unit so the air did not blast out on me. Rude, rude. Attempted to make a reservation this morning. Not only did it take more than five rings for anyone to answer the phone, the woman was extremely rude. Yes I had a weak phone connection asked her to hold on to move to a better location and she hung up on me. Not to mention, she asked me to hold on and I did after telling me she wasn't that busy. This hotel should be called The Bates Motel. Before I entered my room, another guest shook his head and told me to thoroughly check the room before I unpack. The room was dirty and I had to get another room. The water from the shower come out brown when I first turned the water on. The AC unit was extremely loud and kept waking me up each time it came on. The hotel is set in front of the water right on the beach here in Yorktown! However I believe the hotel is stuck in the 1970's as the beds are small furniture is worn and old carpet is dated. AC is a window unit in the bathroom area, why I certainly don't know? Overall the room and hotel are very clean and a view second to none!
