Three of my four children attended YS Kendall Ridge over the last five years. My last two graduate and move to Kindergarten and I have been so lucky to have them be a part of my village. Every single employee has been kind, caring, and receptive to questions or feedback. The curriculum is child-led, nature-based, and reflexive. I love the cottage system - it really sets the school apart. Most of the school has received new furniture (including the new loft!) and it looks amazing. Ms. Melissa and Ms. Hanna are amazing leaders who listen and pivot when needed. They really listen; the moral compass of the school is the child. Your child will experience natural learning in a real way. They are only young once; why not give them the best experience they possibly could have? read more

We had a premature baby in the middle of our move to Maryland. We thought we had lots of time to get the house ready but it didn't work out that way. Needless to say having a half furnished house with a newborn was very challenging. We were nervous about the idea of putting our infant in daycare at such a young age. We researched and toured four local daycares and ultimately chose the young school. We are glad we did. Ms Susan and Ms Kimi have been great and the administration staff is super attentive and friendly. The school is clean and well run. Their communication has been excellent and they take great care of our son. We particularly like the SproutAbout app which provides regular activity updates on everything from bottle feeding to activities which makes us feel like we are involved even while away and provides a sense of security in understanding what transpires during the day. DO NOT SEND YOUR CHILD HERE -- READ THIS BEFORE YOU MAKE THE SAME MISTAKE I DID I'm writing this review because I wish someone had been this honest before I enrolled my daughter. I ignored my gut feeling after reading about children being thrown out of the cot to wake them up. I personally spoke to the director, who reassured me that the person responsible was no longer working there and that none of that was happening anymore. I believed her and enrolled my daughter. That was the worst decision I could've made. From the beginning, I picked my daughter up multiple times soaking wet clothes, underwear, everything. Not once did ANY staff member mention accidents, not once did anyone clean her, and not once did anyone take responsibility. I tried to be patient, but things just kept getting worse. The situation that completely shocked me happened on October 22nd. I picked my daughter up and found diarrhea all over her underwear, through her pants, onto her dress, down to her socks and even in her shoes. The smell was strong and the mess was obvious. This was not something you could "miss." My daughter is FIVE YEARS OLD. This has never happened since she has been potty trained. When I asked her what happened, she told me she tried to go to the bathroom but couldn't because the teachers were changing a bunch of babies in there. I've witnessed this happen previously myself. It clearly prevented my daughter from using the bathroom. And what's worse? NO ONE noticed she had diarrhea all over her. NO ONE changed her. NO ONE told me anything. A week later, I picked her up again and she had dirt all over her bottom. The teacher tried to tell me "she got a little dirty going down the slide." The moment I looked at her, I knew she was soaked in pee. When I grabbed her nap roll, it was completely wet with urine. Nap time is at 12:30 pm. I picked her up at 5:30 PM. That means she had been sitting in pee for HOURS and not a single adult bothered to check her, clean her, or notify me. This is neglect. There is no other word for it. And the final straw, the thing that made me pull her out immediately was when she came home with an actual bald spot where another child had ripped out her hair. No call. No incident report. No explanation. Nothing. I discovered it myself at home. That is completely unacceptable and unsafe. I wish I could go more in detail to share with parents, but this is now a legal matter. I am not exaggerating. I have pictures of everything I'm describing, and I included them in this review so parents can see the truth for themselves. Please do not be fooled by all the five-star reviews. Parents had the possibility of receiving 10% off their tuition in exchange for writing a review. That's why so many glowing reviews popped up at the same time. I also included proof of that so you can see the pattern yourself. My review is long overdue! We've attended The Young School at Kendall Ridge for over 7 years with multiple children. I can tell that the new director, office admin and staff truly care and are actively investing in the continued improvement of the school, the connections with the parents, teachers and community, and fostering a rich environment for the child. The staff actively seek conversations with parents and are responsive to any questions/comments. The teachers are and always have been WONDERFUL. I feel The Young School has yet again reached a great place after the transition in management a few years ago. I've never regretted a decision more than sending my daughter to The Young School. We enrolled our two-year-old in the fall of 2023. We loved the physical environment (warm and creative) and we loved the convenient location. However, from the beginning, communication was lacking. I had to follow up multiple times just to get the proper enrollment forms and then a couple months later, my daughter's lead teacher was gone with no update about the staff changes. My daughter was very attached to the teacher, so she regressed with the change but bounced back as children do. We thought, well, at least she's safe and the teachers seem to care for her. Fast forward to June 2024. My daughter had been in the 3s classroom for a couple of months. I was out of the country for work and when I checked on her through the video feed, I caught the pre-school cottage director waking my daughter from her nap by dumping her out of the cot and onto the hardwood floor. I also witnessed her doing this to another child, along with using her foot under the cot to shake the child awake. Shocked, I messaged my husband, and decided to check in the next day. Sure enough, my daughter and another child were once again woken from a peaceful sleep by being dumped from the cot onto the floor. It was heartbreaking to see my sweet daughter dazed and disoriented on the floor wondering what happened. This was very likely going on for quite some time because when we asked her how she gets woken up from naps she told us, "They roll me off." We're talking about a helpless three-year-old who can't advocate for herself. For her to acclimate to this type of treatment is horrific. We met with the school director to hear their explanation and pull her from the school, but they were dismissive. They didn't review the video footage (they claimed it was recorded over) and while they knew I had a screenshot; they didn't ask to see that until much later. We were also told things like, "We haven't spoken to the teacher yet because she's on vacation, but we'd like to give her the benefit of the doubt," and "The cots are low to the floor," implying injury couldn't happen. On top of that, I naturally asked for a refund for the two months my daughter was in the 3s classroom, and I was denied repeatedly. I paid for the promise of a safe and nurturing environment and that is not what we received. To directly quote The Learning Care Group's (parent company) website, "First and foremost. Our top priority is always the well-being of the children in our care and providing their families peace of mind." The Young School did not prioritize the well-being of my child and instead of providing peace of mind, they've caused anguish and stress to my family. As a working mom who already must deal with the guilt of not being the full time caretaker, I should be able to trust that a licensed daycare center will nurture and care for my child. Before you consider enrolling here or staying enrolled here, ask yourself if you're ok paying thousands of dollars a month for your child to be under the leadership and environment described. read more

Jessica and I were able to meet today to discuss registration for your girls. It's seems that I misspoke when telling her that we had opening in our Jr. Preschool program. After going through our waitlist and updating our roster from our most recent transition, our Jr. Preschool classrooms are currently full. However, we will have an opening in that program in July and I can add your girls to our waitlist for summer camp. Just let me know if you would like to do that. We LOVE the entire Young School staff and community. We have two kids (babies) there and they light up every time we drop them off. The teachers keep them active, stimulated, creating and being adventurous! The school is just even a treat to walk into! It feels so loving and warm. Would 10/10 recommend to anyone in the area. This school used to be fantastic and I loved every bit of it. Since Learning Care Group has bought it, it's been nothing but awful. Young school is more pricey but the individualized care from the original management made it feel warranted. The directors were welcoming and informed and worked with you like an ally. The new management is defensive, unable to communicate, and will always give their reasoning for doing things as being a licensing restriction, though they will never cite which one. The communication is abismal and the app and software you are forced to use are broken and buggy. There is not a single policy change that has made the experience for my children better; in fact it has been the opposite. There used to be cottages that worked like individualized units within the school; tiny schools within the school. Those are now there in name and marketing material only. They cycle teachers through all of the classes and cottages, even when they've been exposed to illnesses, with the sole purpose of maintaining ratios. They'll shift children too, again for the sake of ratios, without regard for the child themselves. It's questionable if any learning is happening in the preschool levels. There are a few good teachers left but there are also teachers who scroll through their phone when they're supposed to be interacting with the children. This school is now solely about making money, and it very much feels like caring for the children and their actual needs is low on the priority list. If you need to send your children somewhere, this is a mostly functioning daycare. But you will certainly be overpaying for the bare minimum experience that they provide. read more

Both of my sons attend The Young School. We are happy with the care they provide here. Generally speaking, we feel the the school offers as wide range of activities for the children (infants/toddlers/pre-k) to do. Infants have exploration with painting, sensory (sand, rice), nature, water play, and toys. The infant teachers we've had were great. Once the kids approach being toddlers and above, there are a lot of activities such as sensory tables, water play, books, toys, arts and crafts, and field trips . Both of my sons enjoy the variety. The Young School also has and educations curriculum where they teach math, science, letters and reading concepts and encourage learning. The teachers promote a safe and welcoming environment, and guide the kids to do the same. I have a criticism regarding tummy time with infants. The school philosophy is that infants do things at their own pace. Teachers do not initiate tummy time; the babies must be able to roll onto his/her tummy on their own to do tummy time. However, The American Pediatrics Association and our pediatrician strongly recommend tummy time. I'm not saying their philosophy is bad (obviously not, as we stayed their and our kids are physically fine!), but we think The Young School should incorporate more of the current pediatric recommendations into their infant program and school philosophy. Overall, we are very pleased with the care Young School has and is continuing to give our two boys. Do not hesitate to visit if you need good care for your kids. The Learning schedule and Playtime seem to be perfect and he thoroughly enjoys going each morning. The Young School Kendall Ridge has been amazing for our family. We have 3 kids ages 7, 4, and 21 months. We started here when our oldest child had just turned 3 and needed a preschool setting instead of the in-home daycare where he was previously. What caught my attention was the fact that they emphasize learning through play. We had visited several other preschools, but I felt that their programs were either too rigid or too disorganized. My son had Mrs. Doreda and she is phenomenal!! We love the field trips and enrichment activities, and we were even able to do piano and swim lessons through the school!!! The Young school was great for our son, and at the time, it was RIGHT near our house! A few years later, we had moved to ellicott city, so we decided to put our 2 youngest kids in a childcare center/prek that was closer to our house. It was a little less expensive than the Young School, close to our house, and lunch was included....but our experience there was TERRIBLE! So i called Beth (the Head of School), and begged to come back! She even remembered me and asked how my son was doing, which was really awesome! I immediately enrolled our middle child, however, the 21 month old is on a waiting list because they did not have space in the toddler room until august. I say all this to point out one fact...we have 3 kids in 3 different childcare locations, and our lives are CHAOTIC right now...but it's TOTALLY WORTH IT to know that your kids are safe, loved, and actually learning!!! Our first experience with the young school was 5 years ago when we enrolled our son. We LOVED the curriculum and how organized and caring the staff was (is), this year we enrolled our 3 year old daughter and she loves it as much as our son did. The main focus is for kids to explore with all their senses. They spend lots of time painting, playing with toys that made them think, they observe nature and are able to experience it themselves by touching, and making things. They do all kind of activities that keep kids interested and engaged. We highly recommend the Young School. We currently have our infant son enrolled at the Tamar Drive Young School in Columbia, Md. We live in Baltimore City where it is hard to find a good daycare that meets our high expectations and The Young School does just that! We looked at around 6 or 7 different daycare facilities in the area and none compared to The Young School. Although on the pricey side of what we anticipated to pay for daycare it is well worth every penny!! We love that the teachers for the infant room sign on for a two year commitment insuring a good bond for development with our infant son. Both teachers for our son, Ms. Susan and Ms. Jenn, are amazing! Ms. Jenn is our son's primary teacher and provides great feedback for our son's day and answering the many questions we have every day. They are both very patient and caring towards our son and he smiles every time I drop him off. We were very hesitant about daycare in general, given this would be the first time anyone besides us was taking care of him, but we felt very comfortable since day one dropping him off with Ms. Jenn and Ms. Susan at The Young School. I currently have my son enrolled in the infant cottage at the Young School at Kendall Ridge (on Tamar Drive). I was very anxious about selecting a daycare as this is my first child. We only looked at one other daycare but the moment I went on a tour at the Young School I knew this would be where my son attended. Everything about the design of the school is very intentional. The infant rooms have separate crib rooms and even fish tanks built into the wall at floor level so babies can watch the fish. There are two teachers for no more than 6 infants and the teachers will transition with the children through the two year program. My son's teachers, Ms. Heather and Ms. Liz, are wonderful. They provide updates throughout the day using the mobile app, including pictures sometimes as well. read more

I'll provide an update to this review once he actually begins, but for those who are currently searching for a daycare in the area, I hope this review will help and direct you here for a visit. Young School was by far our favorite out of the following that we visited: Children's Manor Montessori (Columbia, MD), Childtime (Ellicott City), Glen Mar Early Learning Center (Ellicott City), La Petite Academy (Columbia, MD) and The Goddard School (Columbia, MD). I won't go into the details of each, but we favored the facilities at Young school. We liked the cottage style learning areas and the separate quiet napping areas for infants and toddlers. The detached building offered a lot of space and we can foresee keeping our child enrolled throughout all the different age groups. We liked the idea of having our infant with the same teacher for the next two years. Also the programs for the infants were clearly defined such as painting, sensory activities, toys, etc. Infant care programs weren't as clearly defined at other places we visited. In comparison to other day cares in the area, the price is slightly higher but when you factor in that none of the other day cares had as nice a facility (especially for infants) and were not as organized and clear about their philosophy, it was a no-brainer. read more

We have a 20month old attending the Young School and have nothing but great things to say about it! His teachers are excellent and they stay with him from infancy to 2 years old. Their playground is spacious with much to do and their summer water program is great! I do wish they opened earlier than 7 though. He has learned so much and for that I am very grateful! read more

I currently have 2 kids enrolled at this Young School location. Their infant cottage program has been excellent. Up to 3 infants are assigned a specific teacher that will be their primary caregiver over the course of two year program. I feel this really helps my kids develop a strong bond with their teachers and in turn this avoids having to re-acclimate each kid to a new teacher whenever they move to a new room throughout the 2-year infant/toddler. This was especially important as some kids may be more stranger shy. The Young School has a really strong program that gives children a variety of experiences that may be difficult for fulltime working parents. I know there are some things that I probably would not be able to do with them given my hectic schedule so it is a big relief to know that my kids are getting the opportunity to try and do different things. They do have some risk adverse policies that can make it a little difficult for parents such as not being able to re-heat meals or mix formula. There are good reasons though behind these policies that do minimize risk in the event that instructions may not get followed so it is understandable why they do have them. Overall, this is a very good daycare and I'm very happy with the level of care and attention my kids receive. read more

I have a three-year old enrolled at the Kendall Ridge location. He's finishing up his first year. My husband and I couldn't be happier with what the Young school offers. All of the teachers and administrators are very friendly and caring. I especially like the cottage-style learning environment where children between ages 2-5 have opportunities throughout the day to interact. I believe that because my son has interaction with the older children, he has learned a lot over the past year. I also appreciate how organized everything is and that everything is planned well in advance. Constant and communication is also a huge plus. My husband and I did a lot of research before settling on The Young School and we're as happy today as we were when we registered. read more

We've had a great experience sending our children to the Young School. It's a very warm and welcoming environment that has been a place for our children to learn and grow. There are lots of activities for the children and the teachers are caring and patient. We've met some great family and friends over the years that has really added to the feeling of community and family at the Young School. My only critiques would be that the teacher/parent communication at the pre-K level could be improved. There are daily reports at the classrooms prior to this, but they stop at pre-K. This can make it difficult to keep up with what your child did during the day if your schedule doesn't coordinate with their primary teacher's. read more

The app helps us to keep up on what our son is doing during the day and makes me feel connected. We can communicate via app to the teachers quickly. Both my daughters attend the Young school. We are extremely happy with the love and care the teachers provide. The children are engaged with a wide variety of activities throughout the day. They let children develop in their own way and express themselves. The school encourages kids to have their own creative thinking and share their own perspective. This makes them more confident when they are ready for elementary school. Personally I have seen a big change in my daughter who was very shy at the beginning but now having just graduated she is very confident and comfortable when given new situations. We moved our son here starting at age three after he had spent the 'daycare' years at another school. We were looking for a more play-based experience that would nourish his creativity and rekindle his love of learning. Boy, did we get it! He comes home overflowing with excitement and eager to show off new skills. After a year at The Young School he's not only doing basic arithmetic and learning letter sounds (Apple starts with A, Mommy!) he's also achieved a new level of independence and helpfulness, setting the table, organizing his space, and even stirring pots on the stove (under an adult's watchful eye, of course). Two co-workers whose children had gone to The Young School at Kendall Ridge recommended it to us. It turned out to be the first and also the last school we investigated for our daughter a few years ago. From the moment we arrived for our tour, we knew we weren't going to check out any competitors. We fell in love with the place right away. Over the last three and a half years, our daughter has, too. The teachers are amazing and we just couldn't be happier. In fact, we moved half an hour away from the school a while ago and a Goddard School is right next to our new neighborhood. We never even considered switching even for the convenience factor. For us, the extra half hour commute is small price to pay for peace of mind and the confidence we have in TYS to prepare our daughter for life beyond pre-school. read more

I pulled my son from another local daycare because of the teacher turn over and morale always seemed low. At the Young School he did amazing and I feel that it truly prepared him for the Howard County Public School System as he entered Kindergarten this past September. Now our one year old has been enrolled since she was three months old. I cannot say enough about her teachers. They truly care for her like they would their own children. We have really enjoyed our experience at TYS (Kendall Ridge) and highly recommend it! One of our kids just completed his 2nd year and graduated pre-k. He started as a non-English speaker at the age of 3 yrs (almost 4), and now is fluent in English -- he can read and write and is very well rounded socially. We continually receive compliments for how prepared he is for school. He is also shy in groups, but thru the TYS experience he has developed great friendships and leadership skills. He now often establishes command of a group to coordinate games, etc. at parks and during activities with new children. As a result of our great experience, we brought in our second child at age 3.5, and in just a few months he picked up the language and is fully engaged and enjoying the new friends, the games, and the learning. A few items we particularly like in the school: really good, caring and engaged families; great curriculum and activities both in and out of school; noticeable growth, development, and independence (self-confidence) in our children; good and caring teachers; clean, organized, very fun and very creative environment; a lot of focus on being good members of society (sharing, recycling, helping); good balance between academic and non-academic activities, academic activities are made engaging to the kids and they really enjoy them -- l they don't come across as "work" to the children; cottage (group) size is appropriate and all teachers know all students well even if not assigned as primary, the same with parents of the school. A few items for improvement: some turnover with the teachers since we have been there. Our experience was that the teachers that are well established did very well, however, teachers without experience in the environment of TYS (despite their extensive experience elsewhere) required time to learn the style, routines, philosophy, practices, and other items that "sell" the TY experience -- and they learned thru that process while being a primary care teacher at the same time. As a new parent to the school, with a brand new teacher, it wasn't the best experience coming in. I wish that by the time they became primary teachers, they would've already spent enough time/training (maybe by shadowing, etc) to be able to satisfy the expectations of their position as the primary person. That improved as the year went through. We have also noticed that the after-hours teachers are not as engaged (and occasionally not as gentle) as the assigned primary teachers -- this is not ideal for our kids who stay until almost closing time daily. Despite these items, the overall experience has been very positive, and the close engagement and participation of established teachers, and directors, and their oversight has helped mitigate some of the impact that these items could otherwise have. read more

Our experience with The Young School (TYS) has been nothing short of amazing. TYS structures its infant/toddler care into age based cohorts of six children, who are no more than four months apart in age. Each group is assigned to permanent teachers, who agree to stay with the group during the two years between infant and graduation from the Toddler (2 year) room. Our daughter started at TYS when she was two months old, and now that she has turned two years old, we can share our perspective. TYS follows an approach based on Resources for Infant Education (RIE) and Reggio Emilia, and we have seen great results with our daughter. She was taught infant sign language, so even before she was verbal, she was able to communicate simple concepts like "food", "milk", "more" and "please". This provided her the ability to express her needs clearly to her parents, avoiding frustrations. TYS provides a structured day, with set times for snacks, lunch, and nap time - and our daughter has thrived in this environment, she always knows what is going to happen next, and is prepared for her day. TYS helped transition from two naps to one, and from napping in a crib to a cot, and these potentially stressful changes were handled very smoothly, and our daughter is a lovely sleeper at home. Our daughter has had the same primary teachers for the past two years, as well as interacting with several other teachers from other age cohorts in her wing, and she has developed strong bonds of respect and affection for her teachers. TYS has great gross motor activities, with a large and safe playground, as well as an indoor gym for inclement weather. We absolutely love TYS, and recommend it above any other early childhood education program in Howard County. read more

I highly recommend The Young School and tell everyone I know with little ones to bring them there. Although, they may have to wait to get in (It's that great!) Three of our children have been a part of the school and we have had nothing but great experiences there. My children love going to school and I appreciate the amount of attention given to each child's individual interests and strengths. Individuality is encouraged! From the infant care to the pre-K program I feel that my children are getting a valuable foundation in an attentive environment. The teachers that work there have been there for a long time. In the daycare/pre-school environment where there is huge turnover, this speaks volumes. All of the teachers show love and support for all the children. I feel the teachers really make an effort to partner with the parents about areas of concern. My 8-month-old son was at the Young School at Kendall Ridge for four months. Sadly we had to move out of the area, so we had to leave the school. I wanted to take a moment to sing my praises of this wonderful place. First, the atmosphere is great. The halls are covered in student work, beautiful music is always playing, and brightly colored objects are hanging from the ceiling. I walked in and knew it was the place that my son would go! Unfortunately he was not able to stay there, because I think it would have been even more magical to him as he got older. Second, the director and assistant director are incredibly friendly and organized. They send out regular emails with information, are readily available to answer questions, and are in the front office ready to greet parent/students each day. Next, my son was in the infant classroom, and the teachers were awesome. They were really creative with activities and art projects. I really liked the unique approach the school follows for infants. Babies were encouraged to discover and learn in an safe, yet unrestricted environment. The teachers went above and beyond to make sure that the babies were stimulated in new ways as well. They used an app to update me on my baby's progress throughout the day, and I never had to worry about what was going on. My son was so happy to see his teacher each morning, and every day when I came to pick him up, I saw how well he had been cared for. Another reason I wish we could have stayed, my son would have stayed with his two teachers until he was 2 years old, which I think is incredibly rare and special for a daycare center environment. We currently have two children enrolled at The Young School and a few things stick out that make this particular school above others. First, all the teachers regardless of what classroom your child resides in, seem to learn the names and address all the children they come in contact with frequently which makes the children feel very noticed and important. Also, I cannot speak highly enough about the infant care experience our youngest received. If your child is lucky enough to get Ms. Erin as the infant care teacher here you will not be disappointed. Infant care teachers stay with the children for the first two years and we have to come to love Ms. Erin like a part of the family based on how well she cared for our son. So many wonderful crafts that he worked on, even as an infant, are still staples and on display in our home. I will also be continuously grateful for the early detection of a slight speech delay that was caught by Young School staff regarding my older child. The school's recommendation for early intervention has almost completely turned around the issue my son was experiencing and if it were not for that early detection he might have faced greater developmental delays that would have taken much longer to work through. read more
