I went to see Happy Days last night and thought the theatre was fantastic (and the play was wonderfully acted and produced). You never feel far away from the stage in the least and the acoustics are brilliant. Not a massive amount of leg room in the upstairs seating - I'm a 5'7 lady - and was a bit uncomfortable towards the end, if I were any taller I'd say book the stalls). But you feel immersed in the play in any seats. The bar is nice too though a little crowded so we went to the pub down the road before the play started. The only downside was that the same usher that had checked our tickets and pointed us to our seats then came over 15 mins later with a couple, just before the performance was due to start, and said they had the tickets for our seats. The lights went down to begin the performance and he proceeded to stand next to us with the angry couple waiting for us to find out tickets to prove we had a right to be there. Being pitch black and knowing the eyes of the audience were on us (as the performance was now being delayed due to this seating error) we were very flustered and had to empty out rucksacks and pockets. Needless to say we couldn't find them immediately and the usher gave us a v accusatory look and walked away with the couple (after a good 5 minutes of staring at us mid fluster). It transpired the guy next to us had knocked our tickets under his seat.. It was really upsetting and ruined the first 15 mins of the performance. The usher came over to us in the interval and proceeded to stand there whilst we had to find our tickets. On showing them to him he said 'oh good, I've done my job properly, I won't get told off' and then subtly blamed us for the other couple having to leave. It really cast a shadow over the evening. Please sort out your booking system - although it was v upsetting for us, the other couple were offered alternative seating in the gantry (20 mins after the play started for some bizarre reason) so just went home. As it was the last ever performance of Happy Days I suspect their night was more bleak than the play - a tall order. In summary; be warned about booking. I think us booking through TimeOut and the other couple going through the YoungVic website was the cause of the double booking. But that aside love it. 29/3/2015 - having emailed feedback to the manager of the Young Vic we were advised the usher had been spoken to and were offered a free program. A little patronising but hopefully they've amended their booking system. read more

This is the little sister of The Old Vic on the other end of the street. The Young Vic puts on performances my up-and-coming playwrights but executes them in a completely professional way. I went to see a matinee performance of Vernon God Little here mid week and the seating was pretty much full. The theatre itself is in a half circle and the stage is really big for such a small space. The entire theatre feels like collaboration, from the ticket sellers to the seat ushers to the performers. There is a real feeling of youth and ambition in the way they work and it makes you want the theatre to succeed. It's also a good place to spot up and coming talent. Got taken on a guided tour backstage as part of a Young Creative Council. Learned some facts like it used to be a butchers, has no association to Old Vic Theatre down the road, has a roof garden to grow veg, relies on government funding amongst many others. Seems to be a lot of great shows too. £5 is a cheap ticket to get and its a nice intimate arena to see stage. Also has a bar downstairs. Good coffee there too. I will defo try and catch a show. Not sure how I have never been for one there actually. Will make amends. read more

Red Brick builds the theatre outside in, making one feel warm, energetic, and young. 1st sight is the yellow laser lighting 'Young Vic' outside the brick wall on the 2nd fl. The name stands out at night - something magic is going to happen inside. Inside the restaurant and bar, often filled with people for pre theatre dinners and intermission drinks, the whole wall is the same red brick. It's casual and yet sophisticated, the pre-order drinks for intermission are placed in a book shelf, and along the staircase, stunning posters on the wall are dialoguing with the audience... The crowd is young and passionate, both indoor and out on the balcony, chatting, laughing, and loving each other's accompany. At the entrances to the main house (yes, there's a smaller theatre space, Maria, for 160 all so seats on the ground fl.), I enjoyed the conversation with young stewards'. They're so friendly and eager to tell me the configurations of the theatre and explaining the programme. They're proud to be part of the Young Vic crew! In the theatre, one finds that the set up is often quite different yet the brick wall stands, and sometimes they're part of the show. The seating capacity varies from 400 to 500 depending on the stage construction, in which some moving parts are kinetic, attaching to the actors / actresses. There's a club room available for hire w/ private access to the balcony, quite brick and mortar, yet often filled with performing arts' enthusiasm. As a bonus, the independent Bookshop Theatre is just across the road, where one can hear the rehearsals for the Young Vic plays behind the curtain. read more

I love this theatre in the middle of Southwark. It always has amazing productions on. The last one I saw was Midsummers Night's Dream, which each actor was on stage for the whole 2 hours. I wasn't disappointed with this production and that's after seeing the Globe's version last recently. It has a lovely bar/restaurant to tease your taste buds too. read more

Great space for modern theatre performances. This isn't your grand old London theatre with 19th century architecture and hidden orchestra. I came here for a brilliant performance of 'The Beauty Queen of Leenane'. The outer area to the stalls had been set up with plastic sheeting on the walls and water dripping down it, giving the illusion of rain. You even had to walk under the dripping water to get to your seat. The seats were semi-circular around the small stage which had only one set and remained as such throughout the entire performance. I have only been for one performance but can imagine it would be an extremely versatile venue in terms of reconstructing the seating and stage to suit the performance. There is a large bar area for a few pre-show, mid-show and after-show drinks, ample seating inside and out and an outside terrace upstairs which is a huge bonus, especially on a sunny evening. Another huge bonus is the bathrooms which have about 8 cubicles - your usual theatres only having one or two cubicles in a shoebox-sized bathroom. Despite this, however, there is always a queue for the ladies...well, it wouldn't be a theatre without one! read more

Have been here twice and I love how close it is to Waterloo East Train station! I also love the theatre.... Last night I went to see a production of Macbeth and it blew me away. I don't know if I liked it or not, its quite hard to explain what happened in those two hours. I was scared and wowed and have already told 3 people to see it but I don't want to go back. It got me thinking about Shakespeare (even my English degree didn't do that!) and life and power and death. So amazing. The theater itself is cool, with a really busy bar (that also serves food I think). I'll be keeping a look out for what else is on and make sure to get back in the next few months. read more

I haven't been to see a performance yet, but I will. I was really impressed with the lovely bar upstairs. Especially the outdoor balcony bit which is ideal for summer. I cycle past here after work and on warm, sunny eves had often wished I could somehow launch off one The Cut's many speed bumps and land right in the balcony amongst all the fun. Just like Evel Knievel. Sadly, no death-defying stunts from me, I just used the stairs like everyone else. They serve MeanTime beer here, which gets it an extra star from me. If you're in the area, or going to the theatre or IMAX, then this is a good spot for a drink. read more

I saw my first performance here over a week ago. Upon arrival you are met with busyness because the The Cut bar is right next door. We collected the tickets, said my name and received them, i would of prefer if they had asked for proof coz any old tom dick and harry could of picked up my tickets. Our play started at 7;30pm saw we had twenty minutes to eat i asked the usher if their was any intervals he said no! Thank God for Sainbury across the road. They have a few eateries along the road as well. In the Theatre they have gallery seating and semicircular downstairs seating which i did not like because there was no aisle so i was sitting on hard seating's glad i did not need to pee...just getting through all those people would of been hell. I paid £30 ticket to sit on the third row seating from the stage, we had a great view and the stage was quite big so i could not complain. Young Vic have not only their brochure's but fliers of plays across London which I found helpful. Young Vic ticket prices range from £10(liminted) to £3:50 depending on play. Their are concession prices for the over 60s and young people from 16-25. They also do season savers where you can get a second show for half price and the third free. Young Vic also do community outreach programmes as well, you can also donate money to the Theatre for ongoing projects and future one. To keep updated with what they do, they are on all social media. The Theatre is a short walk from Southwark and Waterloo station, Southwark being closer. Well i cant wait to return to watch "A season in Congo" in the summer. I probably sit somewhere else, somewhere with a bit more leg room for a tall person like I. read more

I haven't actually seen a performance here yet, but I will definitely keep an eye out for things that catch my interest as it looks like a very nice space. I have came here for a drink on a sunny Friday afternoon, and enjoyed sitting on the pavement watching the world go by. I thought that £4 for a large glass of house white was very reasonable. At 4pm, this place was pleasantly busy and starting to fill up - any later on and it starts to get rammed, especially on a sunny day. I haven't ate here, but my boyfriend works nearby and it is regular spot for his work's lunch clubs - I believe they do a burger deal, and he speaks very highly of them! read more

I went to see the "Red and Brown Water" when it was playing at the Young Vic. We walked into the theater, which was set up in the round and had pressed plywood paneling for the set. In the center was placed a piano and a milk crate. The floor was glossy as an expensive magazine. "I think the floor is covered in water," I said to my roommate. "Naw," she replied "it's just highly reflective." Lights down, play starts. SPLASH! It was water. Genius! The actors played the whole script on a stage covered in a few inches of water. Meaningful set choice considering the location of the show was Louisiana where Hurricane Katrina is still playing out the dregs her disastrous game. Although the set was fantastic in and of itself, the caliber of the play elevated the whole of the experience to astounding. The storyline was great, and well interpreted. The staging was original. The actors were fantastic. They made you laugh, they made you cry, they made you feel a lot of things, but certainly made you feel as though you were super glued to your seat. And, they nailed that southern twang like it came from the waters of the bayou itself. I'll be keeping an eye out for more shows. You should too. read more

Over the years I've seen many great performances at this wonderful little theatre. The theatre in the round setting means that all the performances are intimate. The choice of plays is wide and the calibre of actors always exceptional. My favourite play was a production of Uncle Vanya a few years back which was unbelievably good, Chekhov at it's best. Of course you have to see what's actually playing but if you're a theatre buff this is one venue that always delivers. There is also a decent bar attached for pre and interval drinks. read more

Among the many theatres purporting to have a finger on the pulse of the goings on of youth culture and the next generation of theatre artists in the London area, the Young Vic might very well succeed the most. A quick critical survey of reviews of recent productions attests to this. And if the reviewers are happy, surely the audiences are. Right? Truth be told, though, Young Vic fares a good deal better than most at involving the next generation in their work, and tends to elicit genuinely vibrant work from a diverse group of writers, directors, actors, etc. Perhaps for the first time in my life I found myself trying to bribe a ticket agent over the telephone about a production at the Young Vic, and surely that stands for something. read more

The Young Vic - companion to the nearby Old Vic (http://www.qype.co.uk/place/94943-Old-Vic-Theatre-London) - is a small, modern, round theatre space. It only seats a couple of hundred people, but does so with padded benches that are much more comfortable than the narrow, cramped-knees seats you get in the older theatres. Most of the seats are downstairs, with a ring of a couple of rows upstairs. I saw, of all things, an opera production of David Lynch's Lost Highway here, and it worked well: they facilitated the unusual setup of the production. The resulting claustrophobia made it better than it would have been in a larger place. Everyone in the house is going to be close to the performance. There's a bar and restaurant - the Cut (http://www.qype.co.uk/place/132804-The-Cut-London) - in the front of the theatre, and it's a great place for pre- or post-show food and drink. The Young Vic has been in operation since 1970, and focuses on showcasing work of young, emerging artists. read more

Admittedly, I haven't been to a show at the YV yet. We had lunch here before we headed to the IMAX theatre near by. I felt the place was incredibly inspiring yet low key. The restaurant offered some delicious entrees that stand up to near by Hope & Anchor. It a refreshing change from the overwhelming restaurant scene in London. It still retains its original passion -- promoting and engaging people in amazing theatre...while offering a great menu. read more

Created in 1970, the Young Vic was intended to be place where younger directors, designers, actors, writers and technicians could present their work. The theatre itself was built on a low budget, reflected in the low seat prices that could be offered to the public. The seats themselves are simple benches which are unreservable, a sign of the class-free society that the creators aspired to. I watched an evening performance of Vernon God Little. A brilliant book and an even better play, it was a high energy performance delivered by a fantastic cast. The theatre works with schools and neighbours giving 10% of tickets away and keeping the rest of the ticket prices as low as possible, regardless of box office sales. read more

I went to see Gillian Anderson in Streetcar Named Desire here in October and it is such a lovely theatre space. The stage was in the centre and the seating is around the stage which I found really interesting. The stage itself moved around (I don't know if this was exclusive to the play) I am a big theatregoer but haven't been to a theatre experience like that before and I really appreciate seeing the play from different angles. It was also great to be and feel so close to the action. There is an upstairs and downstairs bar and the upstairs one leads out to a lovely balcony. They also do signings afterwards so I got to meet Gillian Anderson. There were also some famous faces in the bar afterwards! read more

Thus far I've seen 'Beauty Queen of Leenane', 'Hamlet' (Michael Sheen) and recently 'A Season in the Congo' - all were exceptional. Great little theatre with a buzzing and very packed bar / restaurant area. The menu looks great although I didn't have chance to try it out you must reserve or arrive very early! The interior of the theatre itself is very basic with bench seats (cushioned) rather than individual seats. The seats had a sense of being made out of scaffolding. It has been criticised for poor sound quality and I would agree, although having only seen one performance here, and it being an opera, there may have been other reasons behind this. I would definitely go again the plays they put on here are varied in genre and style and the prices aren't too bad either. read more

Okay-ish theatre with good seats, food and bar but have seen better.

Theatre which leaves you thinking. Theatre on the bleeding edge- daring to be different. The very best acting and directing in this country. Usually queue for returns so book early or become a friend so that you get priority booking. Lovely, lovely warm, passionate people putting on radical and fun theatre which makes you fall in love with them again and again. Treat yourself by going to every new play they put on - great value for money - maximum of about £22 per seat - no reserved seating. Great bar and restaurant too!! read more

I have been to this hip theatre three times now and each time the bar and restaurant area has been pumping! Although there was no seat to sit inside I happily sat out on the balcony and wrapped myself in a blanket they provided. cool place to meet before the show. Each show has been completely different but would have recommended to any one of any age . read more
