My folks wanted to try this place they read about in a mag. I confess I didn't even know it…read moreexisted. It appears quite new and will be a love affair for fans of New Shanghai who live locally. The restaurant is quite small which is probably why I missed it even though I travel past every day. It's within easy walking distance of the Coles carpark which should solve any non local's parking issues. The menu is quite compact but feasible and there are lunch specials at a smaller size. The dumplings section is basically the hardcore traditional favourites. Not as much choice as NS but should appease the regular dumpling eater. A variety of to-share dishes in the other section of the menu. We settled down to chive pancake, xiao long bao, pan stickers, griddled pork buns and a noodle dish. Seating is limited, I guess the tables could be moved, but you'd be looking at maybe 4-8 being comfortable. It is right open to Boundary Road, so it will be noisy with multiple buses and heavy car traffic. However, I say this would make a good casual dinner between family or friends. Service was fast and attentive. The interior design is quite schmick, the crockery is divine, but the Coke fridge a little jarring. :) They've gone to effort to make it look good, and the food is good enough. I hope it survives as some times one just needs a few dumplings, and a Chinese dumpling is not a Japanese gyoza (which West End has one of also). So please do me a favour and get into this place and keep it going, so I don't have to line up at NS or go over to Sunnybank for my fix.

The food is amazing - they actually taste fresh! In particular the roasted duck and Xiao Long Bao…read moreare really good! The waiters and waitresses are so polite with smiles on their faces all the time, providing close attention to needs (might not be a thing for everyone though)! The decoration is nice and the surrounding is quiet - a good place to have some cheap Chinese yumcha/dimsum with family and friends!

Karaoke at Bens on a Friday night is actually the best thing ever. The most fun karaoke night I have been to in ages. I highly recommend the spring rolls!

Don't go here expecting a 5 star restaurant, this place is 3 and a half at its best. Having said…read morethat, the place is decent, clean and the service is pretty fast. They do tend to cram a lot of tables into the joint, but to experience the food and the 'Ben's Restaurant Experience' like it should be experienced, you need to go there on a Friday or Saturday night and stay past 9pm. They have KARAOKE people!!! It's so much fun and it makes the place come alive. From the hours of 9pm to 11:30pm on a Friday and Saturday night, you can get up there and try out your singing voice in front of the restaurant. You can pick your song and be a star, or be boo'd off stage. Hey listen, I got up there with my friend and we were terrible and people still cheered us on! I think the worse the singer you are, the more cheer you got. A verrrry good incentive for those shy ones! So yes, the food is very tasty, especially the deep fried beef strips in peking sauce... oh so yum. But visit for the karaoke... not many chinese restaurants do this... and it's worth a shot! Big smily face!

When we arrived at the Hyatt Regency around the corner around 4:30 pm, we were really hungry. We…read morehadn't had a proper meal all day. Despite the higher prices, we decided to come to Donna Chang bc we were craving dumplings and Peking duck. We ordered scallop & prawn wontons, Moreton Bay bug dumplings, Peking duck and fried eggplant. First of all, the wontons were a great way to start. They were packed and the sauce wasn't too spicy. I saved the sauce for other items during the meal. Secondarily, the Bay bugs were like slipper lobsters and had a nice texture. The best item was the duck. The meat was moist and the skin was nice & crispy. Lastly, the fried eggplant was light & airy. Regarding the ambiance, DC is located inside an old hotel. The decor is old skool, but the menu is modern. Will, a fellow Filipino was super nice and explained the menu to us. He also recommended the wontons. Later a nice Filipina took great care of us. If you don't mind spending a little bit, DC does the trick. They have very good food & service in a classy environment.

Our first tastes were all really excellent. Truffle pork fried dumplings were superb. Steak tartare filled a hankering for our raw food loving son. Liked the fried eggplant though it was literally dripping oil with every bite. Excellent prawn toasts...chili wontons a little clunky but also very good. Our only real quibble was with the barramundi. We were leaning towards the kung pao chicken and the beef with peppers but figured we were in Australia and should try something special. The barramundi honestly missed the mark. Hard to eat with tons of bones that looked EXACTLY the same as the enoki mushrooms underneath the dish, making it nearly impossible to distinguish bone from mushroom. The broth was SUPER bland. Yes, it had heat from the chilies but no seasoning in the broth whatsoever. Remarkably flavorless. Other mains were more successful - duck chow mein, tofu, roast duck all great. All in all, a very good choice. Just skip the barramundi.
