While I was enchanted to find a vegetarian Chinese place so close to the beach (one that serves yum…read morecha), I was a tad underwhelmed. The ma po tofu seemed modest in portion size, but perhaps I'm underrating that because it was quite filling, and included not just tofu but an array of fake meats and some peppers (or "capsicum" as the locals say). You're not getting a picture of it, perhaps because I was thrown for a loop by a literal fly in the soup experience. Mind you, in Australia, people aren't big on air conditioning and this place is, like many other buildings wide open, leaving ample opportunity for an enterprising insect to slip in. In any case, I'm not the sort to go on some mindless rage over these types of things, so I'm giving them a bit of a probationary three stars. The prices weren't the cheapest of cheap (especially considering it was at a mall a bit removed from the beach), and while mouthwatering, it wasn't the spiciest of spicy dishes. I'll hope for a better experience in the (entirely likely) event that I visit again in the future.

Easy House is the only place that I know of in SEQ where you can get totally vegetarian yum cha…read more(and, apart from the egg tart, which they almost never make, pretty much everything is vegan too!) and IT'S SO GOOD. Though the menu is usually the same, every few weeks Mary will come up to us with a plate of her latest creation to try, which is always delicious. There's inside and outside seating and though we've never had trouble getting a table, it can get really busy. Decor is... typical of vegetarian restaurants, so go expecting good food! Absolute favourites are the satay chicken, BBQ pork buns, rice noodles in XO sauce, and sticky rice in lotus leaves, but if it comes to your table, it's good. Oh, and let's not forget Thousand Layer Cake and Custard Buns! (which can be either steamed or fried, depending on how full you feel). The only item I don't really like are the steamed dumplings, though the pumpkin ones and mushroom ones are quite good. And, finally, they have a pretty good tea menu! Prices are around $4 per plate; some are slightly less, others a little more. As well as the yum cha, there's also a regular menu (which they use for dinner, but I believe you can order from it for lunch as well). If you're veg*n and miss yum cha, it's absolutely worth a drive to the GC, and even if you're an omni, you are sure to enjoy the food here; one of our absolute favourites.
