How I love how they all offer wine. Of course I want to start drinking wine at 3 in the afternoon. I'm in Berlin, after all. I visited Berlin last fall with a mission in mind: to finish my novel revisions, so I had to spend the majority of my time there suffering away my days in cafes, bars, etc. (poor me, right?) I'm a sucker for environment when it comes to working, socializing and drinking. Kohlenquelle is not the coziest place in town, but absolutely a place that encouraged my friend and I to sit down, split a bottle of wine (SO CHEAP!) and get to writing. It's so hard sometimes, to be inspired. But not in Berlin. I daresay I could stand on a street corner and be inspired to get the masterpiece that is lurking within out onto the page (or screen, if you will). Although I had a few favorites in Penzlauerberg that had better options for food, Kohlenquelle was just right for its slightly shabby, rustic if you will (those bathrooms are kind of scary), environs.

Cafe Chagall is totally magic...it feels like it's been there offering great food and great service since before the war, although I'm betting it wasn't Russian food before the war. I could be totally wrong but I have a memory of drinking in this space on my first trip to Berlin in 1994, but it's a total throw back to everything that was amazing about east Berlin right after the wall came down. Food: D (1) soup was bland. Only tasted a hint of tomatoes. Lack of spices and flavor. (2) chicken nachos. A huge bowl of tortilla, a few sprinkles of cheese on top and 4-5 pieces of thinly sliced chicken...dry chicken. (3) Russian dumplings with a side of salad. Meat was flavorful and tasty, but only wished that it was fresh. Lastly, they said only cash AFTER you've eaten everything and ready to pay. Luckily we had barely enough cash to cover dinner.

I was a little hungry and the crêpes sounded delicious, unfortunately they don't make it after 20:00 (it was 20:15) - so if you want one come on time. Had to settle on a cheesecake instead, it wouldn't be my first choice but it sounded more appealing than the other three - it was pretty good but the top layer that I'm still not sure what it was, some kind of egg mousse... Was surely unnecessary. The service was good - one guy behind the bar that was the bartender and the waiter, was nice and helpful. The place was not too crowded and the atmosphere was cool and laid back, I like this place!

According to my companion, the quirky cafe furniture made it look like an old-school East German livingroom... :-) so of course I loved it.. We arrived at 6, but they were closing at 7pm for a private party...nevertheless, we made sure to be efficient @ getting as much alcohol in our bloodstreams, prior to leaving. While they offered cocktails & the bar looked Klein aber fein & well stocked, the the real MVP that night proved to be the classic, higher-end gin tonics, followed by smooth 2cls of Jameson whisky, served in a small, stemmed glass. All great preludes for an interesting night....uh-hem! Anyway, great spontaneous choice... I'd go back if I were in this area. Total Knorke!

The breakfast was awesome- very filling with fresh warm bread, butter, sundried tomatoes, olives, chorizo, cheese, fresh salads and eggs... Everything tasted fresh & the owner/waiter was very kind & friendly. The coffee here is also solid! As is the cider (yum!). The cakes also look great, but the one I chose during my second visit was "meh." Anyway, the location is great for me & directly across from the Spree & Schloss Charlottenburg. Very nice on sunny days to sit outside, despite it being a bit loud on the street. Alternatively, inside is Fine for families- that one morning, a group of 5 strollers & moms in jogging clothes came in together for meals. Anyway, I'm definitely returning in the future. Great addition to the Kiez. Desperately needed & much appreciated.

The pastries are also incredible (great croissants + pasteis de nata!). I think the shop has a lot of loyal regulars, and for good reason. None of the tourist riffraff happens here. It was busy and the place was short staffed, so after seating me the owner kind of forgot about me. Was super apologetic, but I couldn't blame him it was bustling and I think he only had two other people there, one being the cook. The food was tasty. I had the bacon eggs Benedict and a crepe with Nutella and a mocha. All were good. The food came out promptly, and the service was good given the circumstances. I also liked the ambiance of the place. Feeling of a cozy coffee shop but set up for meals.

Even though my friend and I didn't know any German the staff helped explain the different menu items and even gave great suggestions on deserts. I had a delicious variety of fresh fruits, sliced meats, cheeses, bread, and the pairing of mozzarella, tomato, and basil. I've never eaten a more satisfying breakfast in my life! My friend got the vegan platter which was also super yummy (even though I'm not a vegan I enjoyed the platter as well). Both dishes were fresh and flavorful and the desert was to die for! I got a lemon cake that was just the right amount of tart and sweet. My friend got the chocolate cake and she says that's the best cake she's ever eaten and she's super critical of her chocolate cakes so I trust her.
