It advertises itself as Mountbatten Hotel, but that's just the name of the pub downstairs. When you arrive, it's actually named Sydney City Hostels and the entrance is on Ultimo Road. Up two flights of stairs - no elevators - is reception. Staff are friendly and helpful although it would have been nice to have been notified of the $20 refundable key deposit in my email confirmation. I had to leave to get cash out and come back. The rooms are decent with a flat screen telly, mirror, small table and 2 chairs as well as an extension cord so you can plug your phone in for charging while you sit in bed (if you happen to be lucky enough to score a bottom bunk). Fancy, huh! The room, however, smelled like arse and feet, and sweaty men's clothes. Floors were pretty filthy, so I'm not sure how often they get cleaned. Then again as I arrived there was a guy packing to leave after 4 weeks in that room so maybe he made a mess after it was cleaned that day. I'll give them the benefit of the doubt?! There's a locker provided in the rooms for each bed, but it was slightly too small to fit my 40L backpack. Good to keep passports or small valuables like laptops or cameras. There was one toilet and 2 showers near my room, and I was told that there were additional bathroom facilities down the corridor although I never checked them out as the toilet was free whenever I needed it. Bathroom facilities were always clean. It's worth noting that reception is only open during the day (8am-10pm I think) so if you need anything outside of hours, tough luck. The hostel is pretty noisy on a Saturday night, I'm not sure if it was a room in the hostel or a nearby pub but there was loud partying all night long. I managed to sleep through it for the most part but next time I'll remember to bring ear plugs :) Beds could really use with updating... I switched from a much-too-firm top bunk to a way-too-soft bottom bunk (mattresses are obviously never turned!!). I left early the next morning to escape the smell in the room and showered in a friend's nearby hotel room (wasting the $2 I paid for towel hire!) so I can't comment on the showers or free breakfast. Location is great, 2 minutes from Central Station, easy walk to China Town, Paddy's Markets, Darling Harbour and Pitt Street Mall. There are tons of great restaurants in the area and getting here by public transport is really simple. Would I stay here again? Sure, but next time I'll book ahead so I can get a female only dorm.

The restaurants outside make up for their hype and lack of affordability with location and location and location. And frankly, I think this is an awesome part of town. To the left, you're just below a set of stairs that take you to Potts Point; one of Sydney's leading dining/drinking neighbourhoods. To the right, you're minutes away from the Domain, Mrs Macquarie's Chair, and arguably Sydney's most beautiful walk to the Opera House. The hotel room was small, but nicely appointed and the amenities were lovely. (Make sure you book direct from their website for free wifi and the best rates.) The biggest disappointment was the fact that our room was right in the front of the hotel along the main road. When you book a hotel room on a pier, it doesn't seem like a wild expectation that you'd at least get a slight view of water. But not in this case, unfortunately. Overall, this spot is great for convenience if dining/drinking/exploring is high on your list. Don't book if luxury is your top priority, or you're hoping to accomplish a ton of business in the CBD.

I believed this so strongly I didn't even check this when booking, hence my frustration when I was told it was only free in the cafe (really it only works at the entry) and was for purchase in the rooms. Given that it was $90 for 7 days (about the average cost of a monthly subscription for a household) I was not going to oblige. 2) decor. There is such a missed opportunity here given that it's a renovated wharf - the industrial chic design aesthetic that is sweeping bars / restaurants and cafes all over NY / London / Melbourne would have been absolutely perfect in this case, but instead they've opted to what looks like a cheap 90's miami nightclub with tacky furniture, bad colored lighting and an overall lack of ambiance. Given the huge ceiling heights the space feels sparse and empty - such a shame as this could really have been one of the best converted spaces in the city had they been on point. Being an architect does make me slightly snobbish of interiors but given my husband described of it as 'madonnas 90's dreams' then I'll take it it wasn't only me with these opinions. Given the high cost to stay here, you will get much better value and atmosphere elsewhere. Avoid.

Although the area has a reputation as being the bad end of town, we found it perfectly fine to stay in - probably wouldn't recommend wandering on your own in the wee hours, but that's true of certain areas in every big city. The area itself is nice, with plenty of nice cafes nearby, and it's only a short walk into the main sites of Sydney. The accommodation is lovely, with the sense of luxury you'd expect from a high-end hotel - huge beds, spacious rooms, plus carpets, deluxe bathrooms (no bath, but that seems to be standard in Australia). Our rooms were nicely made each day, and the reception staff were friendly enough. Some of the furniture was a little more worn than you might expect from a 4-star hotel, although this didn't cause a problem. The slight disappointment was with the view - while pictures had suggested we'd be able to see some of "Sydney's famous sites" from our Deluxe room, this certainly wasn't the case. To be fair, once we mentioned it they confirmed the room types had changed, and suggested the booking agent hadn't updated their information. But they honoured our booking and quickly moved us to an Executive room. From there we had a partial view of the Sydney Harbour Bridge - it was largely obscured by another building, but was much better than the first. Overall a good hotel if you're looking for a little luxury in Sydney, but I will explore other options when I return.

We had a direct view of the bridge and opera house (although partially blocked by construction). The iPad was very useful. We did not get sim cards for our phone when we arrived, so we relied on the hotel wifi and wherever else we could connect in the city. I didn't find it to be a hinderance. There was construction so by around 9am we could hear drilling, etc. but it wasn't really an issue as we were getting up and around to start our day by then. There are no real amenities, that I was aware of, other than passes to the gym next door (if that's your thing). Unless your plan is to spend a lot of time at the hotel, then that's not really an issue. I usually end up not using most of them when I am playing tourist because I want to see and do things around the city. The staff was so-so. They weren't overly friendly or helpful, but they weren't rude either. We wanted late checkout but had to wait until the day before we left to ask for it's availability. I think ti was an extra $40. King Cross is a diverse area. Lots of food, clubs, entertainment options. Not sure if it is unsafe, but we returned late at night a few times and didn't feel unsafe. Positives: 5 min walk to King Cross station (about 15-20 minutes to circular Quay) Nespresso coffee maker (milk in mini bar fridge) Water heating pot iPad with free wifi Big flatscreen, but limited channels (no CNN International) Negatives: Construction No other amenities Tip: If you arrive late and just want to relax before starting out early the next day they have a food delivery service called Foodora (as well as others) that was reasonably priced and fairly quick with delivery.

Its located right near Central Station, but not on the nicer Surry Hills side unfortunately, however this area was only a 5-10 minute walk away through the huge central station tunnel. Walk 5-10 minutes in the other direction and find yourself near Paddys Markets and Chinatown. I stayed in a queen room which had a window view out to Regent Street. There was a tiny lcd tv (foxtel included), a bar fridge (empty bar from UHT milk), tea and coffee making facilities (kettle, teabags, coffee, sugar, mugs, spoons) and menus for local takeaways. The bathroom had shower only, shampoo/body wash dispensers and a hairdryer. The room was very small but fine enough for one person. The only problem was the aircon vent was quite loud, and you can only apparently adjust the heating in the room, and not make it any cooler than a set temperature (not that I needed to, it was cool weather). Although the room was small and its clearly a budget hotel, everything was clean, tidy and functional, reception staff were nice enough. I did have to pay $2 to store my luggage the next day, which I thought was a bit stingy.

It is close to most parts of the CBD and there is very easy access to transport. The hotel tries to give a boutique hotel feel but it does not really work. It feels more like Ibis, Travelodge or something like that. Everything is clean and it works but do not expect anything special. The room came with a queen size bed (comfy). small lcd-TV, fridge, iron, kettle, hair dryer etc. The remote for the TV was broken (it was not fixed or replaced, they replaced the batteries two times even after I insisted it was not the batteries). The view from the room was of a brick wall (if the window would have opened I could easily have touched it). That actually brings down the overall impression as the already small room feels even smaller since there is virtually no light coming in from outside.
