I typically don't specify the staff for an easy single layer haircut with wash and style. The instructors check the students progress throughout the cut. A disappointing and expensive experience, due to the lack of communication from staff and the cost. My daughter went in to have highlights put in her hair. She was on a budget and chose not to have her hair trimmed because of the cost. She told the staff this. When she was checking out, the cost for the highlights was three times what was advertised. She was never informed by her stylist or an instructor during her styling experience that this might be the case. When I emailed the management afterward with concerns, I was told, "The educator said she explained the price to your daughter and to you and that additional color would be extra." This is a lie. I was not at the appointment and had no contact with the academy during my daughter's styling experience. If you choose to use Z Hair Academy, expect it to be far more expensive than advertised. I went in for a haircut and was paired with Jaxon. Jaxon was incredibly polite and attentive of my hair preferences. As a student, Jaxon had to have their work checked by an instructor, but instead of just checking, the instructor began trimming even further without asking me or Jaxon about my preferences until after the instructor had snipped off an inch of hair. I was happy with the length that Jaxon left, but the instructor went farther than I was wanting. The haircut was $10 total and included hair wash and styling. Moral of the Story: Know that this is a school, so it'll take a little longer at a cheaper price, and communicate what you want clearly. read more

Don't know much about other stuff but my man cuts, Eastern Asian standard style, was on spot as far as details. I had gotten my hair cut recently at my normal salon and then a few weeks later I decided it was too long still. So, not wanting to spend salon prices again, I decided to go to Z hair academy! A student cut my hair and I got exactly what I wanted. The teacher helped out a little towards the end and everyone was very nice and the place looked clean and organized. It was only like $9 for my haircut!! I don't have very "needy" hair (it's just straight and not color treated) but I think the teacher is knowledgeable and the students are apt and professional! I don't see a reason to go anywhere else! read more

A couple months ago before Covid I went there for a haircut. And I have to say,I hated it. When I asked for a 1 inch on the side they give me a 2 inch, my bangs also looked funny. I had to go to a different haircut place just to fix it. I highly recommend that u don't go here unless u wanna learn how to cut hair. Wow...look at all the bad reviews this place has...I'm not surprised!! My God...whatever you do...do not give this place your business. The owner is unprofessional, rude and nasty. I went there today with a $20 coupon for a color...and they told me that it would be $77. WTF? I have hair a few inches below the shoulder..but, the owner was trying to bilk me out of almost 4 times the coupon price. I complained and instead of making it right...she said if I didn't like it I could leave. This woman is supposedly training her students about running a business. *faint* Can you imagine? The owner doesn't know the first thing about running a business...which is that the customer is always right. You could go to Great Clips and get much better treatment. Hell...you could get product and less aggravation form eSalon.com. Check them out! Anyway...if I were wanting to go to school to learn to do hair, I'd check out the Paul Mitchell School or Mitsu Sato Hair Academy. I'd be shocked if any of the students at Z Hair Academy like the owner...I've talked to a few graduates who can't stand her. Why put yourself through that? Life is waaaay too short. Unlike some others reviewing Zs, I've never had a bad experience. I'm usually seat with my hairdresser within 10min of entering. They ask what I want done, have the instructor review it, and then begin with a wash or color treatment prep. I always ask to see in the mirror as towards the end of the haircut to ensure it looks how I want - if it doesn't, I simple state what I'd like to be different. The students are more than willing to work with you - this is going to their career so they want you to be just as happy as they are with your hair. I've had highlights done as well and like the cap or foil options. The staff is always professional and willing to make sure you leave happy. read more

I have always been very picky about my hair. I have naturally curly hair and enjoy being a faux redhead, so finding a good stylist has always been a challenge. After months of dropping $100+ to get a cut and color and being unhappy with it, I decided it'd be worth a shot to be unhappy at a fraction of the price. ;) Thankfully, I had a fantastic experience at Z Hair Academy! I know it's kind of a crapshoot on who you get, but the student I got was fantastic. I think you need to know what cut/color you want, and be clear on the expectations. The student is there to make you happy and do a good job, so as long as you're clear on what you want, it's not a big issue. Also, I appreciate that they consult the instructor before and after your services to make sure it's up to par. It is a LITTLE slower than a salon, but I didn't mind the extra time. I got a cut, full color, and a conditioning treatment for $42! Since the student took the time to make sure I liked the color we selected, and double checked it with the instructor, I finally got the shade I was looking for this past year! What's even better, they keep notes on your style/color and you can request the same student for your next appointment. I definitely plan on going back and saving some serious cash for a salon-quality cut and color! read more

I am actually a current student here at Z and I am going to review this on the basis of service and classes Service is something that 95% of us students try REALLY hard to make the best we can. In my experience some of the "freshman" students are just as good, if not better than the "senior" students. Now, you can't call in and ask for a senior student because the school is all about equal opportunity. My advice is to be VERY clear about what you want and make sure that if you see something you don't like, or are not sure about.... SPEAK UP! I have had my hair both cut and colored here and I have liked them each and every time. Prices are really affordable and if you are clear you can get more than what you pay for. As for classes I have NOTHING but good things to say!! They have amazing instructors that all have gone through the exact same thing that you will be going through (except more modern). They are understanding and know great ways to explain difficult things. They strive repition so that your brain really understands what it is doing.Things get hectic when you get onto the floor and start working on really clients. However, by the time you graduate you will be happy for those experiences (good and horrible) You get more than what you pay for and by 1500 hours you will be very happy! read more

As I am reading others reviews, I think that the thing to keep in mind is that these are students. If you want an expert, you are going to pay expert prices; if you are willing to be specific about what you want, and allow the instructors to assist the student, you will most likely walk out pretty satisfied (and for $7 hair cuts and $20 or a little more for highlights) and not light in the wallet. I have gone here on and off for years (sometimes I can't get an appointment and when I want my hair cut, I want it done immediately), but every time I have gone in, I have been helped quickly, and have always been asked if I was satisfied when they were done. I have had countless haircuts, as well as several highlights and hair colors with no complaints. The only time I thought there was an issue--one side of the back of my hair was a little longer after I styled it myself, I went back and they addressed it with no fuss. I also like the Aquage products they carry--these sea-mineral infused creams and gels work super well with my curly hair. read more

After reading all the reviews about the place I was very skeptical but I ended up going there anyways. I don't know if it was jus my day but I had the best treatment ! No one ever gets my eyebrows right but they did an awesome job ! They kept checking to see if I was happy with the work . Extremely polite and SO FREAKIN CHEAP !! The only reason I give 4 stars is that there wasn't enough time to get my blow drying right.. But then again not the stylist's fault .. omg. i had the worst haircut in the history of haircuts. i'm sure there are talented "students" at z, but my strip club waitress left my hair completely wet and totally uneven before pronouncing she was "done.". she seriously didn't know how to cut hair at all and admitted it. nice girl, but had NO BUSINESS in front of a paying customer. if you go to z's ask for a person with some sort of knowledge about hair because this chick was CLUELESS. i could've done a better job myself. they need to work on TRAINING stylists. read more

I had a very pleasant experience at Z Hair Academy. I wanted to do ombre, which was nerve-wracking, but after consulting with someone face to face I decided to go with Z. I'm EXTREMELY picky about my hair. I have had awful experiences that have left me unhappy with my hair color for years. When I went into Z today I was very specific and repetitive and probably naggy, but every hairdresser I talked to listened very carefully and asked good questions. I continually felt like we were on the same page. My ombre came out a bit brassier than I wanted. I was upset and unsatisfied, and let them know that I did not want to finish the styling and just wanted to go home and "get used to it". The instructor helping my hairdresser could tell I was upset, and took it upon herself to make sure that I didn't leave unhappy. She suggested a toner (which in the past have turned my hair orange), and persuaded me to give it a try. It turned out FANTASTIC. I absolutely love my hair. I was very adamant about what tone I wanted to achieve and she made it happen. I left very pleased and continue to love my hair each time I look at it. They are students, and there were some little mistakes. But they are working and training. The student who worked on my hair was told to do certain techniques she had done before, and that I have never seen before, but when fellow students asked why, she told them she was doing exactly what was instructed. I appreciated that. They take their instructors' directions very seriously. I also love that all the students will watch each other in passing so that they can learn and observe as well. It's not a high-end salon with five-star treatment. But it is an honest and respectable business that I will be going back to in the future. When I first looked into going to Hair school I researched every single hair school in the Kansas City area thoroughly. Let me tell you why I chose Z Hair. This is the only school in the area that has you work on hair (mannequin hair) from the first day of school. It is run like a salon. We not only learn basic techniques but we also learn how to free hand cut and color hair in the most up to date methods around. Our tools are nothing but the best. Where other schools skimp on mannequins, cheaper hair dryers and shears, we get Chi tools, and right now I have 7 mannequin heads that I've worked on so far. We just had a class with Suzie Bond and Steven Cristobal not to mention Sue Pemberton who was in Manhattan, KS a few months back. Just a few huge hairdressers in the industry. They recommended us to use the newest hair color product line. Some of the best salons in the area don't even carry it because of the price. Guess who is upgrading to the best? This hair school. Z Hair charges a fourth of the price to color hair with THE BEST EXCLUSIVE products in the industry. By the way the only way you can offer this product at any salon is if you buy into it!! I'd say Ron and Judi truly care about this industry. I know that unlike some other business owners out there Judi truly stands behind her students. I feel so prepared to take on what life has to offer me whether it's working at a local salon, moving to another state and working there, or opening up my own business. Wasn't impressed by the student. I have been going to this place since if first opened in Lawrence and never had a problem. The student that gave me the perm had never done it before. She didn't take her hand to ward of the water that was sprayed into my face. I got chemical solution in my eyes. I was never offered a second towel to hold over my face even though the first one got soaking wet. The student was to busy talking about going down town that night to a party. I know they're young people and but I don't expect them to blow off their client to discuss partying issues. I've had perms here before and have always had the offer of having my hair dried. I came out with soaking wet hair that I got my shirt completely wet and made for a miserable day. I will not likely go back because of this. I understand they're students and learning, but I'm also a paying clientele and I deserve some respect. read more
