I have long, thick, coarse hair that is not easily tamed. As a result of many bad haircuts, I've gotten in the habit of waiting months between trips to the salon. I've tried several salons during my time in Lawrence and Greenroom has FAR surpassed all of them. I called to make my first appointment after waiting over a year since my last cut and they recommended Megan, saying she's particularly good with long hair like mine. Megan took the time to talk over what I was looking for and made me feel like I'd known her for years as soon as she was shampooing my hair. While their salon has plenty of products for sale, she explained which ones she was using but didn't push me to purchase anything like some salons too often do. I came in with inches upon inches of dead split ends on my hair and left with a bouncy, perfectly layered masterpiece that I was actually *gasp* HAPPY with! I'm very picky about my hair so this was huge for me. I returned for a second haircut by Megan a couple months ago and was again extremely satisfied with the results. Mitch is great! Mitch specializes in Men's haircuts. I went to him after a suggestion from someone at work and I do not have a single regret! He has cut and colored my hair and is wonderful! I have recommended him so many times to friends. Now my boyfriend even goes to him. He's a super nice and very talented guy. The salon is very upbeat and bright! Very professional atmosphere! A stylist really fucked up my bangs. (I won't name her because I'm not a monster who is seeking to ruin her career or anything. Even the greats have bad days.) I had gone to her several times, and she did a great job. My hair looked super model worthy. Everytime I had an appointment she would remind me that bang trims are free, and I didn't need to make an appointment since it was something super quick she could do in between clients. I never took her up on the offer until one fateful day. I didn't live in Lawrence but I figured I should make the trip since my bangs were getting in my eyes and it never looks as good when I try to trim my own. Here was my mistake: I didn't double check the closing times. So I walked in around 5:45. Not knowing that it was 15 minutes before closing time. When I arrived my stylist was sweeping up her station and there were two people at the desk. The receptionist asked me how they can help me, I said my stylist said they did bang trims for free. The receptionist called over my stylist and told her what I was there for. I'm not sure if I asked or if someone told me they were close to closing time. When this was made clear, I apologized, explained I didn't realize, and would come back another time. This is when my stylist insisted that she could do it, and it would only take a few minutes. We went back and forth for a while, me saying "No, it's okay. I'll come back another day," and her saying, "Really it's no problem." Eventually I relented and sat in her chair. This would be an easy trim for a fringe that's supposed to hit right above my eyebrows. Almost immediately I notice my stylist seems agitated and a bit frantic, but at this point it's too late, scissors are in hand she is snipping away. I try to make small talk but she's pretty visibly irritated, so I just thank her for doing this. Her response: "Oh it's no problem, although you really need to make an appointment for this sort of thing." !!!!!! Since when !!!!!!!???? Everytime you mentioned the complimentary bang trim you emphasized how I could walk right in, no forewarning necessary. Not wanting to piss off a women with my hair in one hand and scissors in the other, I apologize for not doing so and thank her again. When I went to leave 5 minutes later, not even the two people still at the desk could keep a straight face. My bangs were not just 2 1/2 inches long, but lopsided. (Think Jim Carry in Dumb and Dumber) The dude I was with at the time couldn't even give a convincing, "It looks fine." As you can tell some time has passed since then and my bangs were fine after a long painful grow out process. But I just really needed to get this off my chest. I have one word for you - BRAD. Brad has been cutting my hair since I was 16 - that's 12 years, people. (To date, Brad and my husband represent my most successful relationships. [Don't worry - they fulfill different needs.]) Brad is the most intuitive hair person I've ever been to - he's able to tame my thick, curly mane into something that's manageable, and even cute - and with the Kansas humidity, that's sayin' something. The other stylists at Greenroom are awesome as well - while I've never personally been, the aforementioned Husband and several friends have had great experiences with Molly and Teri. I have no doubt that anyone who works here will be able to give you a fabulous new 'do. Other reasons to make Greenroom your hair's new home - free coffee or hot tea, a wonderfully sweet receptionist, a cute location on Mass, complete with hardwood floors and exposed brick, and a whole lotta hair knowledge without any pretentious attitude. I just moved to Lawrence from out of state and I was looking for a hairstylist. Anytime you move to a new city it's always hard to find someone that you really like to do your hair. Suzie made an appointment for me and styled my hair. She was warm and welcoming and did an amazing job cutting my hair. I will definitely be going back to her to have my hair done. I just had my first appointment with Megan and I couldn't be happier with both the cut and color. She spent a LONG time asking questions, looking at my hair, finding out about my hair's quirks, etc. Then she actually did a little "review" of her plan before starting to make sure we were on the same page. The whole experience felt very professional and enjoyable. In the end, I have a great cut and great color, everyone at work was super complimentary this morning. The salon is also super clean. Also - price was very reasonable and they have seem to have set prices for everything. Is it rock bottom, no, but for the end results it seems very reasonable. One thing, not a plus or minus, just something to know. I am a person who wants to get in, get out, and get on with my life - this place is perfect for that. I know some people love to spend hours in the salon and don't mind the relaxed pace, so if you are looking for an extended vacation in the salon, this might not be your place. This is a salon with set times for various processes and they don't mess around. Again, I love the professionalism. I've had stylists who mess around on the phone, do their nails, talk to the other people in the salon, etc. Some people might like to spend hours hanging out in the salon -I don't. In the end - I would HIGHLY recommend. Megan was great, I also saw lots of great hair on other clients as well, so I think you would do well with anyone there. read more

Having had fantastic cuts and horrible cuts all up and down the coast, I can firmly say that Steven gave me one of the best experiences I've had in a long time. LOVE LOVE. Miss Teri cuts my hair and has for years! We have done funky styles, conservative styles, and every color except blonde. I have short hair and have yet to walk out their door completely satisfied. I also had extensions done there a couple years ago and loved them. I wouldn't go anywhere else in this town for a cut or color! I have seen Suzi, Stephen, and Teri and have been super satisfied and entertained during my services. I refer everybody who asks about my hair to the salon and have many friends who go there exclusively. I love their free bang and neck trims and how the cancellation list actually works! I came here for the first time with a gift certificate, but will definitely be back again; the price of my cut would have been very affordable. I have had my hair cut for $6 (Wal-mart! Actually, I think it was Great Clips w/a coupon, Wal-mart was like $11, ha ha) and like $60+, and I felt like this was one of the best cuts I have ever had, and for a price landing between those two extremes. Teri cut my hair, and she did a wonderful job. Probably my best experience ever. The girl at the reception desk was nice, and I felt comfortably welcomed by both of them. The interior is clean and upbeat, and definitely the best music selection (fun, cool, but not so trendy that I felt like a loser). Teri asked me some questions, and really seemed to listen and care. She explained everything to me, and detailed the products in a way that felt like she was truly trying to share her knowledge and not just sell me stuff, like I have felt at other places. She also took care when cutting my hair - I have had several recent experiences where I felt like the stylist forgot my face was there and would let my wet hair slap me in the face or blast me uncomfortably with the hairdryer. So that was very refreshing. And the cut - perfect! I have wavy hair, and this is the first cut that has successfully let me wear my hair wavy and have it look pretty decent with little effort. Nothing's better than that! I usually just straighten my hair because it's too obnoxious to deal with, but I feel pretty either way now. Mercedes has cut my hair twice - each time it was easy to get an convenient appointment and more importantly, a great cut. She listens to my ideas, makes suggestions, and works quickly. A day after my last cut I found myself giving away her card to someone who simply 'had to know' who cuts my hair. The Salon is clean, professional, trendy but unpretentious. I am obsessed -- and I mean OBSESSED -- with Greenroom. I've been going to Teri for about three years now. I have never gotten a haircut that didn't 1) make me feel pretty, and 2) grow out well. That's huge. She always listens to what I have to say, and she makes great suggestions. She doesn't pressure you to buy product, but if you're interested she'll show you how to use it. So far I've convinced three friends to try out Greenroom, and they've all converted. I can't rave enough about the positive atmosphere, the friendly staff and the quality results. Okay. I am very, very fussy about my hair. It's fine, wavy, and looks a lot worse than most with a so-so cut... which is what I got at Greenroom. Stephen was nice and he listened really attentively to my descriptions of my last cut which was FABULOUS (at another salon out of country), but he wasn't able to pull off the same effect. The hair is barely layered, doesn't sit right, and looks really meh. He also seemed to struggle with the cut, dropping my hair and comb/scissors a couple times. I also found there to be an air of exclusion at the salon. The stylist and client next to me seemed to have an inside joke with my stylist, which, while it was all very well for them, made me feel a little uncomfortable. No one wants to feel like they're paying to crash a hip friend reunion. I also asked about what products I should use for my new, long do (I've always had short hair). I didn't get a single recommendation. There was a lot of "this smells good" or "I like to play with this" but there didn't seem to be any real knowledge or experience behind the "recommendations". All in all, not horrible, but I'm not going back. Sorry Greenroom, I really wanted to like you!! Edit: after I posted this, Stephen contacted me and was very kind and apologetic about my experience, offering to redo my cut. I declined, but I'm impressed by his professionalism, so I've upped my rating. I hate to bitch, but... oh wait, no I don't. Last September, I happened upon a coupon for $15 off a cut and color at Greenroom and had heard rave reviews about the place. My regular gal was on maternity leave so I decided to give Greenroom a try. I decided to go for some subtle highlights even though I don't normally color my hair and the (very friendly) receptionist made me an appointment with Molly. The salon is a great space - decorated nicely, hip ambiance, and played pretty great tunes. Unfortunately, the stylist did not meet my expectations. $100 and a very strained conversation later (and I can talk to pretty much anyone), I had a so-so cut and invisible highlights. INVISIBLE! My mom and close friends couldn't even tell I'd colored my hair. I called the salon and explained the situation and the receptionist told me that Molly would be happy to have me come back in and fix the original color for free. While she re-highlighted my hair, we sat in total silence. Every attempt at conversation was met with a single world response. At my next haircut, another stylist said my hair had sustained a lot of damage since she last saw me. If you decide to check out Greenroom, give Mercedes or Brad a try... they seemed very gregarious and appeared to have many repeat clients. read more

I had stumble upon this place based on the product they sell and that was the Oribe line. When I went in there I wanted the dry texture spray, but had questions about other things in the line. No one really knew much about anything in the line, but had told me "if you don't like it bring it back". With really dry hair they lead me to the Kerastase line and again I was given the same "if you don't like it bring it back". Well I didn't like that particular conditioner from Kerastase and I did bring it back. I did schedule an appointment for a Brazilian Blowout which did nothing for my hair, if anything made it worse. I did bring this to their attention and they had me get more of the Kerastase stating "if you don't like it you can always bring it back". This time I had bought shampoo and some of the styling products from the Kerastase line. Being a product junkie I had bought about $200 worth of product. Many of the products I bought were travel size so I could also try out some their different products to see what would work. Since I have had hair issues over the last year I have been trying to find something that would work. I did bring 2 items back and did repurchase many more. Today I went in to purchase the full size shampoo that was working and did return a travel size. The store owner met me at the counter and told me I could no longer return anything. I later counted I had a total of 6 returns, 4 travel sizes/2 full sizes and I had spent almost $1000 from Dec to April (this is based on my punch card they give you) All of these were only used a couple times so it wasn't like I used them up and got my money back. I returned based on their recommendation. Also one time that I caught had them over charge me on the return and not give me enough back. I didn't catch this till I was half way home. (live 30 mile away) They also charge more for their product than the website states it should be. read more

Meh. 3 stars for trying and good customer service. I've come to the conclusion Kansas doesn't really have good hair stylist nor can they cut bangs lol. My actual cut was uneven. My bangs..:should have stuck to cutting them myself which I ended up having to do to fix them and I think I did a better job...I refrained from getting a haircut for almost a year because of these problems with various other salons around Kansas. Greenroom had awesome reviews so I figured I'd give them a shot. But disappointed to have spent $32 for a mediocre cut. But props for a nice and clean salon. read more

I avoid getting my hair cut like the plague and finally braved up to get it trimmed today after three years. I have virgin hair that has never been dyed and rarely gets styled which comes with the perpetual fear of something disastrous happening to it at a salon. Mitch did a great job; full service, friendly salon from drinks when you walk in the door, to shampoo and condition, to shine and blow dry. He worked quickly but it never felt rushed, and it was the first haircut I've ever had that I didn't regret! I'd recommend any/all of the Green Room stylists, but I personally been going Megan for years. Many of my friends and colleagues go to the Green Room now, too. I *always* love my hair when I leave the salon and continue to be happy with it until it's time for the next cut and color. I like that they don't rush you through and hurry on to the next client -- they actually cut and style your hair at a relaxed pace so you get some pampering and attention. They have great products and recommend the ones that will work for you, without being pushy and giving you a hard sell. Megan is amazing. I brought in photos of the haircut I wanted (from a bunch of different angles) and she looked over them and asked questions, listened attentively, and communicated her understanding of what I wanted and then described in detail how she would achieve it, where she would be cutting, and how much. Throughout the cut, she gave me the chance to get my glasses back on and run my fingers through the hair and to affirm that it was going where I envisioned. I have never had such a great communicator as a stylist. She was also warm, friendly, engaging, and had a kind touch and relaxed eyes and body language, which made me feel relaxed and safe in her chair - wonderful shampoo and deft cutting, she is very tuned in to her client while she is working - some stylists seem to kind of go into their own world and only realize that there's an actual person sitting there at the end of the cut. The whole experience was A+ positive and therapeutic, I felt great after the cut and my hair looked exactly the way I had hoped it would. I will definitely be going back to Megan and I wish that more stylists had her interpersonal philosophy, she is really lovely. read more

Between an awesome cut and the right styling products (I personally like the Oribe line they sell), my hair has volume, texture, and style. So, after I had a not so great experience at Head Rush I was kind of in a panic to get my hair fixed. I walked down to Green Room and booked an appointment for the next day with Steven. I had a particular idea in mind, and he talked with me for a while about it. He really made sure we were on the same page. He colored my hair, which turned out exactly how I wanted it, and then stayed after the salon closed to give me a cut. Other stylists were also there after hours to give people haircuts who had not made appointments. This, to me, means that they go above and beyond for their clients. Steven was super knowledgeable about all of their products and talked me through what he was using. I have to say this was my best salon experience including several years that I went to a top Aveda salon in SOHO. I would highly recommend Steven, of course, but I'm sure all of their stylists are better than what you might find anywhere else. read more
