One of the playgrounds is named after Zahra Baker and I'd suggest you not go look up that name. The park is handicapped accessible including some of the rides. The four baseball fields are lighted. Parking was very limited today with lots of parents bringing their kids and hanging out. I managed to find a legal spot in front of a home on a cross street. Don't block driveways or fire hydrants! It's located near to the downtown center of Hickory and there is parking all over. The playground has all sorts of climbing and swinging things going on that are ideal for helping your toddlers burn off energy. Most of the park is fenced off which is great for helping keep kids from possibly wandering off and the limited access gives parents the opportunity to see anyone getting too close. There are tables and benches for picnic and lots of shade. Plenty of spots for the grownups to sit while the little ones play. The park opened in December 2016. Lowes Foods is the naming sponsor, while CommScope and Corning Inc. Foundation also stepped up as lead donors to make the park a reality, in addition to numerous other individuals and groups. The basketball court was in good shape but definitely don't miss a pass as out of bounds is a pretty steep drop and you're chasing your ball for a while. There is a nice playground here too with a spiral slide. The park is fenced in, which will keep the little ones from wandering off. At the park entrance is an 8 foot tall white obelisk and four plaques that detail the Miracle of Hickory, telling the story of Hickory's historic polio hospital that was here for a time. In 1944, a polio epidemic spread across Western North Carolina. In rapid response, the Hickory community rallied together to construct an emergency hospital to treat polio. The hospital was conceived and built in just 54 hours and experienced one of the lowest mortality rates in the country thanks in part to the revolutionary Kenny method of treatment.
