I was really looking forward to attending an estate sale this company was running, but it…read moreunfortunately ended up being the least professional sale I have ever experienced. I have never had a business be as cavalier with my time as Family Affair Estate Sales was today. Like most I first found out about the sale through Instagram, and clicked through to their website where there was an indication that you should text them ahead of time if you plan on arriving at the opening time. I did so, assuming that this was for a headcount, or some sort of list at the door (eg. they can only handle so much volume on a weekday and want to make a guest list, so you give your name at the door when you arrive). It was not fully clear on their website exactly what this text was used for, but I was happy to comply and excited to attend. I'm no newbie to the estate sale game, so I showed up a few hours early to wait for entry, bags in hand and cash in tow. I was among the first to arrive, just before 7 am--it was pouring rain but I was happy to stick it out as I had my eye on a particular item. After about an hour, the organizers showed up. A half hour after that, the woman who seemed to be running the show proceeded to inform us that they would start reorganizing the line in the order of which people texted. By this time, there were well over 50 people waiting in line behind me. Everyone we spoke to in line was confused and not aware that this is how the sale would be run. Obviously, no one that was standing in the line would have arrived hours early to stand in the rain if we had known this. When those of us up front kindly tried to explain that there was a misunderstanding to the woman organizing it and asked if there was any way she could come up with an alternative--maybe you alternate entry by one text list person in, one physical line person in?--she said that how it works was clearly stated and walked away. As someone who also runs a small business I understand having policies (and clients misinterpreting those policies), but if that many customers are confused by your policy, it is not in fact clearly stated, even if you think it is. Perhaps there should be some larger disclaimer on the sale listing on their website that it does not matter if you arrive early or not? The organizer did not seem open to any feedback and just insisted "this is how it works", and frankly seemed frustrated that we were bothering her with questions. The worst part of it all is that when the organizer did start lining people up in order of texts received, she was clearly completely unprepared. No speaker or megaphone to cut through the noise of the crowd, no full names, and she kept losing her place in line--it was total chaos. She also told us that she got so many texts that she stopped counting names after the first few hundred, which begs the question as to why they are so insistent on sticking with this arbitrary system. What exactly was the plan if she reached the end of the list and there were still people who are not in order/unaccounted for? Some other reviewers expressed frustration that they believe this company uses the text message queue system to give preferential access to their top buyers. To be clear, I have no problem with this--I run a business that also thrives from repeat customers, and I understand wanting to give them advanced access and perks. I'm well aware that small businesses--especially in the estate and resale world--run on existing relationships. What I do have a problem with is how poorly this company explained their system to newcomers, and their inability to problem solve when it became clear that there was a misunderstanding with a very large amount of people. Perhaps the company could have texted people their number in line prior to the sale starting so that it was clear exactly how their system operated. And if the volume was more than they could handle, maybe it is time to get creative and pivot a bit, even if just for a day. It was beyond insulting to be treated so dismissively after taking time out of my schedule to wait for hours in the pouring rain. The sale was supposed to open at 9, but we left at 9:45--they were still calling out names and had not even let anyone into the sale yet. Almost three hours of my life wasted to stand in the rain and leave empty handed, soaking wet, and treated poorly. Be warned of this unusual system if you plan to attend any estate sales run by them, or better yet, just avoid them altogether.

It seemed like a monumental task and she had a lot of stuff, including boxes and boxes of papers, old bills, even a warranty for her $60 toothbrush from 10 years ago. Kyle was truly a knight in shining armor who came in and handled everything. We gave him the keys to the house and left it pretty much as she had, with dishes on the shelves in the kitchen and every closet and pantry full. He and his team sorted through eveything, created beautiful displays of her possessions, and recycled all the papers and even some of the older electronics. This is harder to put into words, but Kyle also honored my sister's memory. She was musician. She loved Porland. She loved the Beatles. He displayed her instruments, played Beatles music and had some photos of her around so people could see that this wasn't just "stuff" -- it was the cherished memories of a life well lived. Kyle gave a complete and prompt accounting of the sale and left the house beautifully cleaned, and sent us a lovely letter at the end along with a check. My family and I will forever be grateful for how Kyle and his team made such a difficult process so much easier. Thank you Kyle.

Estate liquidations usually have bittersweet causes, and our situation was no exception: it really makes a huge difference when the resolution is handled so well. I hope that when my time comes Hidden Treasures is available to deal with my stuff as well, because I have every confidence they will do a great job!

This is my story, and I want to share it with you, because I do not want others to be ripped off like I was. Most people who have estate sales are in grief and vulnerable because either their loved one has died, is going into assisted living or is downsizing. They just want someone to take care of their needs to make this shift in their lives more bearable. Cynthia comes across as very capable and professional and is so empathic that you feel she is taking care of you. And she is so smooth and does such a good job cleaning up afterward that you may not even realize what has happened. First of all, the contract that you sign is written in her favor. Items that sell for less than $100 will not be tracked and accounted for. Only items that sell for more than $100 are put on an itemized list. And, most people pay cash at estate sales. This, plus the fact that most items in an estate sale sell for under $100, leads to a lot of misplaced revenue. Also, she asks you not to show up at your own sale. Her reasoning is that it makes the customer nervous knowing that the owner is in the house when they offer a lower price. That is ridiculous. When customers walk in, they have no idea who the owner is. She sets it up this way so that you do not even know what is going on. It is a perfect storm for being taken advantage of. I fortunately took a few measures ahead of time to protect myself. I came to the sale anyway and watched the cashiers. People came in and made purchases over $100, but the cashiers did not list the items. And when I received my totaled list at the end of the sale, those items were still not listed. When I asked Cynthia about it, she denied any wrong-doing, saying that those items were purchased individually, so each sale was less than $100. Since I had taken pictures of everything before, during and after the sale, I knew exactly what merchandise was sold. I also had friends go to the sale, and they each bought items over $100. Those items were also not on the totaled list. What she gave me is a made up list of things over $100 that sold. Some was factual and some was not so it looked legitimate. When I approached Cynthia about the discrepancies, she got flustered and said, "read your contract, I do not have to list items under $100." Then she turned around and ran out of my house. I was shocked by her behavior. She said she makes deals with customers, and that is why I received less money. But when I totaled everything, she would have had to give things away for free for her reasoning to make sense. When I tried calling her after the sale, she would not return my calls and instead had her employee contact me. He admitted that Cynthia was afraid to call me about my issues. He said if this information got out to the public, she might go out of business and he would lose his job. Soon after, I received an email from Cynthia saying that she had suddenly found a bag at her house from my sale with a bunch of cash in it. She said it was buried under some things and had not seen it until now. When she mailed me a check for over $900, I started laughing, because it was obvious she got caught in her lies and she wanted to keep me quiet. Since then, I have totaled everything, and I estimate that I am still owed several thousand dollars. In another covering up of the evidence by Cynthia occurred when, after the sale, I asked to see the "bid" items and the names. People bid on items that are higher priced and leave their names and phone numbers; if they bid the highest, they are called after the sale so that they can buy the items. When I asked to see the bid list, she said she had thrown it out. I also asked to see the credit card receipts of those who bought things on credit. She instead sent me a deposit slip from her bank. It did not state what sale it was from or the individual items that were deposited. She refused to show me the credit card receipts saying it was an invasion of privacy for the customers. When I asked her to make copies of the receipts and white out the account numbers and the names of the people, she refused and stopped talking to me. Cynthia Fischborn did everything she could to hide her thievery from my estate sale. It makes me sick that she is taking advantage of innocent, grieving people in this way. I want to share my story so you can make an informed choice and protect yourself.

Casey didn't just handle the estate sale with professionalism and care -- he truly invested himself in making the process easier for us. He left the house in better shape than when he first arrived, even bringing his own tools and parts to fix a leaking toilet. By the day of the sale, the house was sparkling clean, each item was thoughtfully researched, cleaned, priced, and staged. He even took time to make minor repairs to items to help them sell better. When my stepmom realized she had forgotten to pack some important items for her move to Texas, he helped us get them shipped to her. He even assisted with selling two of my dad's trucks, which were outside the scope of the estate sale, making numerous trips from his home near Sandy, OR to Vancouver, WA without ever making it feel like a burden. What stood out most was his generosity and kindness. He always had time for our questions, treated our Dad's belongings with respect, and even had candy on hand for my kids when they were with us. It was clear throughout the process that Casey is not only highly knowledgeable and dependable, but also a genuinely honorable businessman who cares deeply about the people he serves. If you are looking for someone you can completely trust to handle an estate sale with integrity, compassion, and extraordinary effort, Casey at Mountain View Estate Sales LLC is the one you want. -- Alysha B.
