We are fortunate to live about a mile and a half from Zeb's, so we eat there at least once a week. Whenever we have friends come to visit us, we take them there, and everyone loves it. This is a tough review for me, as I'm really picky about my BBQ and Zeb's really didn't deliver in that department. The pulled pork, which is about the only true BBQ item on the menu, didn't deliver for me - it was a bit dry and lacked much flavor. The BBQ sauce is highly vinegar based and fails to really compliment the pork. So how can this place get a four star, you ask? This is the best Brunswick stew ever. I've had dozens upon dozens of Brunswick stews across the US, and this is hands down the best. It's full of meat, with a bit of veggies, and full of flavor. And I'm not the only one who thinks so, just in the short time we were eating here, at least a half dozen people game in to order a gallon - up to three gallons - for carryout. If you get one of the main meals you can get a second helping of Brunswick stew free. The BBQ plate for 8$ cannot possibly leave anyone hungry. The slaw is really good as well, well balanced, not overly sweet and not overly tart. The service is really good, very friendly and always attentive. The building itself - both he ceiling and the floor sag. It did kind of weird me out a little bit. So understand that if you go here, you might be best served just getting a carry out order of the Brunswick stew. Believe me, I'd drive 30 minutes just to get a gallon. If you ate here, and landed on a two or three star - Id understand, but, the Brunswick stew for me personally left me feeling I would make a considerable drive back for some in the future. read more

Mom and Pop BBQ as you pull off 29. A fallout shelter is buried and situated on the lower part of the parking area, so if the bombs fall you're safe. You'll also have copious amounts of stew to ride out the apocalypse. The pork is a little dry until you slosh some of the vinegar based sauce on top. The hosts are sweet and accommodating. Ok, I had never tried Brunswick stew before moving to Georgia. Needless to say I always try stew now when I travel and Zeb's is the best by far! Zeb's are generous with their portions and they have consistently good pork. I prefer vinegar based BBQ sauce, so Zeb's blend is good. My wife is from the west and prefers a thicker ketchup based sauce like Sweet Baby Rays. They always have several options for her. When you drive by, it's obvious the business has been here a while, but it's always clean inside and the people working are friendly and prompt. MY parents travel in to visit from out of State and always ask to visit Zeb's. My dad even bought their T-Shirt the last time they visited. Zeb's is the BBQ place my family always went to. Especially after visiting family in Danielsville we always would stop by Zeb's. It's probably been years since I actually visited in person so it was due time I made another visit. Granted I can recall I wasn't always a huge fan of their BBQ pork however, their winners here are in the Brunswick Stew and the slaw. Absolutely the best hash around. My half-sister usually gets about 3 pints of it whenever she's in town. The slaw is a perfect amount of sweet and tart. Not a gloppy mayo mess. Zeb's typically has one sauce and it sits in the vinegar camp of the BBQ sauce world. I favor the more liquidy/vinegar sauces myself, but it's very easy to over do it with Zeb's since the sauce like to separate letting the strong pepper and spices sink to the bottom. Even after a bit of swirling the jar to try to mix it up it still was locked at the bottom. If you do manage to get some of it.. it does get spicy pretty quick from the pepper. It's also not a sweet sauce. It's vinegar to peppery. Can't say it's my favorite, but it's signature here. There is usually a good amount of parking too even with a lot of people. You just go in and seat yourself. The staff is very friendly from what I can tell and will treat you well. The large BBQ plate also comes with a 2nd helping of stew. It's kinda nice since it just tops everything off. Tea is sweet and delicious too. So no complaints there. The place does look quite dated, but I love that about these types of southern BBQ places. They don't need any fancy exterior charm, just let the food speak for itself. read more

All my life, I've heard "if you want good bbq, eat at Zeb's ". Finally I tried it. Boy was I disappointed! It's getting a two star only because I was so excited about going then it didn't at all live up to my expectations. The stew is halfway decent, food was hot, BBQ was lean, slaw was sweet, the BBQ sandwich was extremely small, but the BBQ sauce was terrible. Only the one sauce to choose from and tasted like a little oil and tons of vinegar. Service was good but seating lacks something to be desired. Family style so you may be eating with strangers. We drove a ways there so I doubt we will go back. Just not very good. I would categorize it as "edible" (except the sauce)! read more

I LOVE BBQ. Without a doubt my favorite genre of food. Whenever I'm out in the sticks I make it a point to find some BBQ. The downside to my BBQ addiction is the fact that good BBQ is hit or miss. This place was a definite miss. The people were very friendly and the place had a great down home BBQ vibe to it. Bags of sun beam bread on the tables. As soon as you sit down they bring you BBQ sauce. The only thing that was off was that It didn't smell like BBQ. The pork tasted like the "BBQ" pork from Golden Corral buffets. The stew was really the only thing that resembled BBQ. The sauce I didn't care for either. I'm writing this because I wish someone would have posted a review like this one to save me $15 and some disappointment. We read such great and flowing reviews on the Brunswick Stew that, although we had just eaten lunch at Vanna's BBQ, we drove across the county to buy a quart of Stew from Zeb's for Dinner. It wasn't worth the trip. It was OK - almost exactly like the stew at Vanna's or dozens of other BBQ restaurants we've eaten. It was a bit over blended to the point that I couldn't tell what was in it. It was thick and had just a mild kick. Good, but certainly not worthy of the glowing reviews. Amazing BBQ. When I come back home to Georgia I always have to stop in and get some pork and a few pints of stew. The stew is great to load up on and freeze and is always a crowd pleaser to warm up. Also bring your own mason jar and they will fill it up with their sauce so it keeps and you don't have to worry about the top falling off the togo container. Zeb's has been doing bbq for years and they know how to do it! The pork is so lean and tasty. It's not a fancy place but you go there for the food. I would say the best brunswick stew in the state of Georgia! Just the right amount of corn, tomatoes and meat. I buy the stuff by the quart! If you love a vinegar based sauce then this is the place! Zeb Dean's is a local standard by which barbecue is judged. The place hasn't changed in probably fifty years. Sweet tea and Sunbeam loaf bread on the table and all they do is pork and stew (along with some sides for the kids and such). You won't leave hungry if you get the large pork plate, which comes with seconds on stew. The vinegar-based sauce is really special and served warm; it gives incredible flavor to the moist, tender and delicious chopped pork. BBQ is what I review the most - and I typically only do the ones I like it love. This is a 'love' review. The pulled pork comes dry for you to add sauce. The stew/slaw dog is freaking unforgettable. Our family LOVES Zeb's! It's a quick, easy experience no matter what size group you're with. Our go-to is the BBQ plate, which includes meat, two helpings of stew, slaw (I sub for fries or tater tots), Lay's potato chips and bread (on the table). Our kids get the hot dog and steal our chips :) The stew is my favorite part! I don't order stew anywhere else because I love Zeb's recipe so much! Ask for the homemade sweet sauce... so good. The pork is good and that's all they have as far as BBQ. Pulled pork only. They have hotdogs,hamburgers and chicken sandwiches also. A pork plate come with plain chips,slaw and stew. They will refill your stew at least twice. The BBQ sauce is vinegar based and is very good if you like vinegar based sauce. I have been living in this area all my life and it's really good food. Zebs BBQ has been here 50-60 years our more. The same family recipes have been handed down from generation after generation and has not changed much at all. It's a small place but will seat 100 people or more. The service is great and the food comes out fast! They give you a pitcher of tea at your table. The forks and spoons are always at the table so if you drop one there is always another at the table. The parking is a little dangerous and there is not a lot of parking places. Most parking places you have to back out in the highway and 29 highway is a major state and federal highway. When you back out of the parking space you are backing out into a busy highway and there is a hill that you can't see over. So cars are coming over the hill and you have very little time to back out and get going on the highway before a car comes over the hill at 55-65 mph. This is why I only give zebs 4 stars but not because of the food. Definitely stop by if you like good pulled pork! read more

It's your basic cheap southern bbq place that you can find anywhere...don't go out of your way to make this place a part of your trip. The people who are complaining about this place are missing the point. This isn't "chef driven cue" or KCBS "contest cue," or anything like it. This is classic Georgia country barbecue, and it's as good as it gets. You ought to be able to appreciate it for that, and for the unique (at least in Georgia) sauce. This is the one that the people around Athens think is the best, and it's been in business way out in the country since 1947. There are fewer and fewer of these great old places left, or at least fewer and fewer who are still doing it right. And for $9 a plate. I live a few hours away, and don't get down that way that often, but I'll definitely be back as often as I can. read more

You can catch a whole lot of everything with this vinegar sauce. I was told to go there for the Brunswick Stew . . .it was decent enough I guess. I had heard the pulled pork was incredible . . . .it was tender, but no bark. But damn . .. .that sauce will make you pucker right up and say hello to the day. And if you shake it up before you pour it, you get a little spice. If the pork had smoke like the sauce had superbly sour, this would be one of the great ones. read more

My husband I traveled from Tallahassee, Florida to try to food at this establishment. My husband grew up in this area of Georgia. This establishment has been around for 64 years. We should have been the talk of the town. The Food was excellent especially the brunswick stew. We brought a couple bottles of Zeb's sauce. It was worth the drive to eat here. I grew up in Indiana and I joined the Navy at 24. I met and married my husband of 29 years. He is originally from Athens and we moved there when I got out of the Navy. I have been all over the U.S. and have experienced BBQ all across this country including Texas, and the best I ever had was in a small little place on route 29 between Danialsville, Georgia and Royston, Georgia. The place will probably seat about 50 people, maybe. We stumbled on this place, after looking for work in that area. My husbands great uncle was the sheriff of Danialsville for almost 50 years, so we tried to settle there. To no avail, but that's ok, we found the best BBQ and Brunswick stew I ever had, in this little hole in the wall, that I miss so much. If I had the recipe for that stew, I would stay up nights and guard it. I could eat that stuff everyday, all my life. Wow, whoever the person was that said that he didn't get enough, is a hog. You get enough pulled pork for at least 2 sandwiches, at least 6 or 7 ozs. of cole slaw, a good size portion of the stew, and all of the bread you want. They leave a loaf of bread on the table. You get all of the sauces that you need and plenty of sweet tea. And to top it all off, it isn't really expensive. For my husband and I to eat all of this and get a to-go (a soup bowl) of stew for my husband's grandmother, we probably spent, maybe $18.00. I don't think that is unreasonable at all when you spend that much at Pizza Hut or some other restaurant that charges you for the extras! read more
