We said,…read morewe should go. in my email box this week is my weekly Yelp suggestions and what is at the top? Smitty's! It is a "plate of shrimp" moment of off we go. Smitty's is about a mile up 51 from the biggest truck stop interchange on 85. The building complex is a very cool set of older buildings that look like a barbecue restaurant. There is a giant stack of wood outside so this looks promising. When you go in, seats yourself and someone will be there to serve you right away. The menu is typical barbecue fare with a couple other items too. I ordered the brisket plate, Megan had a chicken fried steak. The brisket was tender and smokey with a little salt and pepper in the seasoning. It was good and meaty. The fries were good as was the okra. The stew was flavorful with tomato and corn. Megan's chicken fried steak was very good. It was beefy and tender and cooked just right. Her potato came with big cups of butter, cheese, and sour cream. And she ate her whole salad. This was a special road trip for use because of the Yelp suggestion. But if we are back in the area again we will defiantly hit them up again.

You can always get a seat even during lunch rush in their lively and spacious dining room. Food may take a bit if they're busy but it's worth the wait. I was curious because Yelp reviews are a mixed bag and I think that is right. We went in and found that all the cops in the area were eating lunch, like more than six tables worth. They looked like they were enjoying lunch so that's awesome. The place is a big open room, as dining rooms are, and seemed noisy. It really quieted down when the table of three next to us left. I guess they were really loud. We ordered some fried pickles to start. They were fine with the ranch, just seemed like standard frozen. I had the brisket plate which comes with three sides. I chose fries, beans, and stew. First thing I noticed was it came with two slices of white bread which is old school legit. The brisket was a good sized portion which was tender and tasty. It had au jus on it which is unusual for BBQ but it was good. Fries were standard with a light batter and delivered crispy. The beans seemed plain out of a can with some onions and were bland. I know that there are a billion kinds of stew and stew is a religion but this one is not for me. I did not like the spice blend, but you know at least it had spices and was not bland. Just not for me. Megan had the pork sandwich. The pork was good. the also had roasted potatoes which were the kind in the can (which I love) roasted in some spices. Megan did not care for the beans. The summary here is we liked the meats, the sides not so much. I would like to try this place on a Sunday when they have fried chicken.

The brisket slices were think and it was really well cooked. The pork was awesome but the sides were out of this world. Every single one of them was perfect. There were four BBQ sauces to choose from, Eastern NC style, hot, mild and mustard. I am not a huge fan of mustard BBQ (I'm from NC, IYKYK) but I'll say this was the best I had. The hot was my favorite and it had just the right amount of heat. For those that may be concerned about the description of the writing on the walls and divey spot don't be. There were plenty of they also have some tables outside but it was super hot. I had the pulled pork plate and my son and husband both had the chopped brisket. The pork was good but the brisket was amazing. Brisket is amazing when done right and this was done very right. Full of flavor and moist and juicy. AMAZING. You have three different sauces you can try. They are at the tables. Hot, regular and mustard based. All had great flavor and the hot wasn't real hot. As sides we had the Brunswick stew, Mac and Cheese and cheesy hash browns. The Brunswick stew is less chunky and more fine. The flavor was good. The Mac and cheese was very creamy in a white cheese sauce. It was really good. The hash browns were full of flavor. I would definitely order the Mac and cheese and hashbrowns again but probably would skip the Brunswick stew. Not that it wasn't good. I would just try other menu items first. Just FYI. No alcohol. But you're coming here for the food. You won't even miss having an adult beverage. The tea is freshly brewed and all you need. All three of us left stuffed. I took half of my meal home with me. They definitely give you plenty to eat. We shared a banana pudding at the end because my son wanted to try it. It was very rich and creamy. Not sure if it is available every day because the menu just offers a dessert of the day. Two of us shared it and there was plenty to share. Of course, this was after we each had already eaten our dinners. And we're already stuffed. But the person at the table behind us was raving about how good it was so we couldn't resist. The employees were friendly and they kept the line moving. There were two kind ladies out in the dining area refilling drinks and making sure tables were cleaned as soon as people left. This is the kind of food you dream about after you've been there. So very good. We will definitely be back soon.
