Master Sonny Le has infused very refined and skilled techniques into the art of Kung Fu. Disciples of the Academy are actively engaging their physical bodies while grasping mental concepts such as deeper concentration, critical thinking and coordination between the mind and body. Throughout my time under the teachings of Master Sonny Le, I have developed a better sense of my strengths, abilities and self-confidence. The Academy provides a welcoming environment with other students which recognizes our weaknesses in order to overcome them, encouragement to keep us moving forward and the knowledge necessary in order to achieve our own personal goals. My time at North York Kung Fu Academy has enabled me to fulfill my own ambitions and I have successfully completed the Single Kung Fu nunchuku (Shao Zi Gun) and am currently pursuing the intermediate level for the Kung Fu nunchaku and Wing Chun self-defense system.

For this to be the Systema Headquarters, I found it odd that I was the first to add it to Yelp. I'm…read morehere with my boyfriend as he's been studying for close to 2 yrs. and will soon be training to be an instructor. The owner/instructor Vladimir Vasiliev is well-known and it's honestly a privilege to train under him directly as many instructors exists throughout, this many is the head honcho, the top dog, the best of the best. There are Systema classes all over (my bf studies in the Bahamas) and we've been able to find them where I live as well (in the DMV of the US). He's also traveled for Systema seminars, Toronto (2x) and Tampa. Check the website for seminar & drop-in class dates and Google for classes near you. There is also a weeklong camp that will be in August in Toronto. Seminars book quickly and the capacity is about 55 students max, there's usually a waitlist. I've never heard of this defense technique until my boyfriend educated me on it. This is a well respected martial art form (think: Krava Maga, but not). I find it interesting that unlike many other forms of martial arts where it appears a lot of energy is exerted, this form is effortless yet the strike is strong and is as effective. However don't let that make you think they aren't working, as effortless as their motions appear... They are bruised, sweating, toned & very strong. There's very little literature available about this form. I was able to sit-in on the drop in class and saw first hand. People traveled from as far as Asia to attend. Today is the last day of the actual 2-day seminar. Yesterday, he attended solo. Today, I was oddly turned away and told no spectators by the owner's wife. Given that the following of this discipline is rather small as compared to others, and my presence would not be disturbing (they have a waiting area with full visual of the gym). It's odd that I was told that I couldn't sit in. My boyfriend was just as insulted by the request especially since no signs stated such and it's just odd... Why so secretive?! There's plenty of room for the select few. Smh.... And although no spectators are allowed, you still can take pics and video as a student not to mention videos & pics are taken by professionals for the website & the Facebook page. My suggestion to this facility: All requests should be made in the form of a sign otherwise it appears discriminatory and leaves us insulted and with suspicion. I assure you a dojo or a dance hall allows spectators and they are at full capacity for students & are successful. Take note.

We are currently living in an upside down world, not knowing what will happen tomorrow, but attending Systema helped me heal. Systema helped me learn about who I truly am, which helped me Deal with everyday stress. One of my favorite things about Systema is the friendly faces in Vladimir Vasiliev's class. They look out for one another as a family. You don't have to have any background in martial arts, and you don't have to be an athlete for them To welcome you with open arms while trying to help you out as much as possible. Vladimir and his wife Valerie are some of the kindest people you will ever meet. Vladimir will gladly teach you everything he knows, and he will explain it in a way that will make sense to you whether you have a martial art background or not. So, if you are looking to enhance your martial art skills, improve your athletic abilities, or simply want to try something new, I believe that Systema will do that and much more.

They teach a variety of martial arts, but for the event that we went to there was not much martial arts taught. There was the basic punching and kicking, but I was hoping for some grappling or more Muay Thai related striking. Our instructor Mark, definitely made us work though. We warmed up with running, stretching, skipping rope, planking, kicking the bag, punching, core exercises, resistance training and stretching to finish! I had a great stretch going on and it was a great Saturday morning. I would come back to this gym but I would personally go for more of the martial arts and less of the bootcamp fitness.
