Before going there, he allowed kids to boss and push him around and also needed help in the confidence department. NOT ANYMORE!! The school is also REALLY CLEAN [I'm a germa-phobe!] before going there, I was worried about cleanliness/mats/bathroom and smell to name a few. Thank goodness it doesn't smell like a boy's stinky foot fungus locker room after a game. Eww! PRICE: More affordable than I thought it would be. Programs suitable for everyone's financial needs. [again, you get what you pay for] STAFF: From the owners to the instructors. Everyone is courteous and professional. They engage really well with the children and don't make them feel bad about not getting a drill the first time. They will go over, and over and over drills without losing their patience. I've been a member since 2021, and I keep going back. Partly because I've already been boxing for…read more12 years and have a bunch of semi-discipline, (lol) but I've also enjoyed learning NEW things, and interacting with the cool trainers. Primarily FFKK caters to the kids, teaching them karate and having summer programs, after-school programs, plus some classes where the parents and kids train together. But four days a week at 7:30pm the adults attend kickboxing/muy thai classes for an hour. They also sell intro gloves, leg gear, head gear and shirts, hoodies and a duffel to put it all in. They strictly prefer that all wear the shirts when they train. The black-belt trainer, Jerry is a great guy, patient, kind, able to train all levels at once. He makes sure your form is good, makes sure folks don't get hurt, and is very flexible with your decision to spar when you get to a certain level. There are sessions just for testing, and folks who perform what they've learned get a belt. Another black-belt trainer there, X, is a good guy too. He co-trains with Jerry and always puts an effort in and boosts up folk's confidence when they feel they aren't quite getting the drills. He challenges folks without pushing too hard beyond the scope of what they are capable of, and is genuinely respectful of everyone at all levels. Part of what keeps me going back is training with them, and actually learning to kickbox, not just do HIIT training for a Hot Gurl Summer. They respect the sport, and they help you to enjoy training and learning. I wasn't good at holding mitts or pads when I'm paired up, because I never had to in boxing. When we do drills we pair up and learn from each other. Folks learn how a punch or kick feels so they know at what speed or force to do it themselves. Yet no one walks out of there looking to fight anyone. They just feel they've learned enough to protect themselves and avoid combat confrontation. And they make new friends. The place is clean, bright, organized, not always cool, but you're gonna sweat hard anyway, so ventilation and a decent temperature is good enough. The heavy bags are quality, the pads well kept, and there are snacks and beverages should you need em. Seating at the front is great for anyone having to wait for you, or to put your gear or shoes, although they do have cubbies for that too. There always seems to be package deal pricing, and the prices are reasonable. Check em out and then go kick something.

The classes are 45 minutes (strictly while the summer camp is also happening, but once the kids are gone, we're allowed up to 15 extra minutes to get a quick workout in). I personally attend the morning sessions as I have to work during the evening ones. After each class, I leave feeling pump and ready to face the day. I have been recommending this place to everyone, and if not for you, then I recommend your kids doing karate here. This is simply a place you need in your life and I hope that everyone gets to experience it at some point in their lives.

North South is a fantastic place to train jiu jitsu. I have been a member at the school since July…read more2018. And it has had an incredibly positive impact across many facets of my life. The schedule has a well-attended 6 a.m. class for local commuters (it's one of the few times I know I can get on the mat) as well as competition classes and extra-curricular strength training and stretching classes. The school has cultivated a great community that supports all levels (and age groups) of jiu jitsu from high-level competitors to novices just finding the sport. Adam and Karen, the owners and head coaches, provide excellent instruction and truly care about their students. When I competed in a tournament in Manhattan, Adam went with me to coach from the rail. I was the only student competing that day and he still made time, away from his own family and commitments, to head into the city. Last, the kids program is great. The coaches create a fun atmosphere that is still conducive to learning and building their skills in a safe manner. If you're curious about training, I highly suggest checking out the school.

They teach kids about confidence and discipline and history. There are always enough sensei per class to give each student personal attention. It's always amazing to see these students compete at Koei Kan's annual Tai Kai tournament where all of North America's Koei Kan schools compete at all ages. Many of the Sensei started with Koei Kan when they themselves were kids, and many others discovered this karate system as adults. They all volunteer their time teaching because of their love for karate and dedication to this dojo.
