The school is fairly small and individual attention is given to all students. Every class is lead and overseen by Shifu Hengxin, Shimu Arlene, or in most cases by both. What I noticed right away when I began training at the SKFTC is that Shifu Hengxin has no interest in convincing you, or selling you on his martial arts practice. There are no frills or exciting welcomes when walking into the school.. it's simply a matter of getting to work. To me this was refreshing, and says a lot about the sincerity Shifu has in his teaching, and the type of students he wants to acquire. The vibe is true, the vibe is authentic, those who are interested can stay, those who are not can leave. It sounds cold but I think in reality it is a warm and genuine way to teach. No student receives praise, you never hear "great job!", and your always asked to do more. They treat every student the same, which keeps everyone humble and connected.. not divided. Trying the free introductory class at the SKFTC was the best decision I have made in a long time. Being a student has revitalized me, and brought so much more balance into my life. The classes are very demanding and Shifu and Shimu work together to bring the best out of every student. This place has become a second home for me and will continue to be for a long time. p.s. First off, JKD is not like other martial arts - it doesn't have a specific sequence or a rigid structure. It's fluid and is a defensive and an offensive tool depending on the situation. Infact, it has parallels in other militaristic fighting styles where you don't have to be the strongest (physically) to be able to use it. Sifu is the real deal. My kids also learn from him and they feel more confident in their ability to handle anything because of it. Personally, I trained in JKD for a short period of time many years ago, and was looking for someone I could continue with - fist of interception is exactly what I needed. I started learning again at 43, and I don't see myself stopping. Highly recommend trying it out if you or your kids want to learn a no-nonsense martial arts style from a master.

However my journey in the technical understanding of JKD accelerated and pivoted to new heights when I trained under Sifu Vincent Benitez in 2016 at the school's venue in NJ and later switched to online classes in 2020. Sifu Vincent's martial arts lineage traces back to Sifus Richard Torres - Ted Wong and eventually to Bruce Lee. Sifu Vincent has greatly inspired my martial way. He is patient, articulate, authoritative and expert in teaching JKD the way Bruce Lee would have insisted to see it taught. With so many JKD interpretations and offerings in various kwoons. Sifu Vincent's teachings are the real deal and is strictly and unapologetically aligned to the Bruce Lee's core teachings. Sifu Vincent's teachings are unfiltered, raw and true to form. They are untarnished by influences of martial arts cinema flair. The lessons taught are strictly for street fighting. It Is JKD in its very essence that is layered and based on the "Tao of Jeet Kune Do" without compromise and adhering to how Bruce Lee had practiced it for its application to defending oneself effectively. I am 64 years old and I have committed myself to training under Sifu Vince for the long haul. My only regret is not meeting Sifu Vincent sooner and lost time immersing myself in martial arts' classical messes and JKD variants that go off-tangent to Bruce Lee's fighting methods.

We appreciate that coach Janel and coach Jared ignited my son's passion in martial arts! Students love them! They not only have impressive skills in martial arts with numerous international championships, but also are fantastic coaches. They made the training challenging and yet fun, motivating students for continuous improvement to the next level. They also organized various team building events, like pizza parties, ice pop treat, volleyball games, to engage students. The coaches really care about individual students. They are very kind, willing to make extra efforts to help student's personal growth. They reach out to support and encourage students. My son became enthusiastic about martial arts. He takes every opportunity to attend the practices, and feels proud of the completion of each class where he overcomes new challenges. Through training, he made tremendous improvement on strength and flexibility. My son has participated in several demos and competitions. That's a great motivator for him to improve his skills and to strengthen self-confidence. Coach Jenny is very caring, always smiling and patient, checking out the perfect size of outfit and weapon for each student. She also took a lot of photos/videos of every event and thoughtfully organized them into one directory for each student, for a memorable experience. The team members also cheer up for each other like a big family. The coaches work with students of different levels and help them to strive for the best self. We recommended three new students from different families ranging from 7 years old to 13 years old to join the school, and they liked it! I thought it'd be helpful to spread the word to benefit more students who may be interested in martial arts.
