Having moved here from New York, I was quite delighted to check this place out! The restaurant is clean and modern and has great eye-appeal. You can create your own bagel sandwiches (for $7.50) or select one of their options (~$9/10). I tried the Pilgram with chicken, bacon, mayo and tomato salsa on a rock salt bagel. I HIGHLY recommend the combo. While the sandwich lacks the amount of fillings a New York bagel would have, it is still satisfying. My husband had the Big Schnitz and he enjoyed it, too. Haven't tried the pizza, but if it's anything like the bagels, you're taste buds are in for a treat. Don't want a sandwich? You can also buy their bagels as bagel chips!

I have long been waiting for a Wholly Bagels to arrive in the South Island and was so excited to…read moresee it has recently opened in the new complex corner of Ilam and Creyke roads. This means I can stop pestering my wellington friends for us to quickly stop by Wholly's up there for my fix. There is plenty of off street parking but only two parks actually reserved for Wholly Bagels customers so snag yourself a street park if you see one. This is a new fitout so everything is clean and fresh. The bagels are amazing. My favs are the pilgrim and the salmon. The bagels come in a variety of flavours and are freshly made with no preservatives. The fillings of the gourmet bagels are humungous and delicious. I really want to try the pizza sometime as well - the Jumbo size truly is jumbo!! Service is pretty good. They took a while to take our order as they were busy cooking out the back. They also forgot our hot chocolates but remembered just as we were finishing up and bought them to us as takeaways instead with a lot of apologies and a free bag of bagel crisps (YUM!) so all was forgiven. The hot chocolate was really good actually, generous with the marshmallows and not flavourless like I find so many are. I recommend checking out Wholly Bagels for lunch, especially for Uni students as its very close to campus. They are also open till 8ish in the evening, and you can do an online order to speed things up in store.

It me several minutes to make my selection, and then I changed my mind twice whist being served. I finally settled on the Bronx Beef. I liked the way you see them cut the meat up thickly as my sandwich was prepared. The others two diner also enjoyed the options chosen. It it was a small place with a few seats, a great lunch was enjoyed.

The smells emanating from the restaurant were strong enough to keep you firmly planted in line though. I'd like to say the line moves fast, but, alas. Though this place is called "New York Deli" it's definitely a take on some American staple sandwiches. As a former New Yorker, the pastrimi ingredients weren't quite correct, but as a new local Kiwi, I thought it sounded great anyway (I never liked American pastrami sandwiches anyhow). The names all have a fun New York theme like Brooklyn Short Rib, Bronx Beef and Salmon on Broadway (except the Obama BLT, that was a random outlier). I opted for the NYD Cheesecake (last minute switch because they ran out of the Chicken SoHo) which is a seasoned flank stank (cooked more medium rare than dry and chewy) with chipotle BBQ (more bbq than chipotle) and cheese on top. I opted to add some veggies at the end of the line, too, as the service works much like a Subway store. I had my sandwhich on turkish bread, but there are two other options which both looked fantastic and fresh as well. I'm excited to go back and try some of the other options, but also, to arrive before 10:30 am and try some of their bagel creations. If there bagels are as good as their bread options, you won't be disappointed.
