Who knew vikings could brew up some delicious coffee…read more On a day trip to Bloomington, Emily and I picked a random coffeehouse off my list of ones I have yet to try and we landed on Viking Brews. We both didn't look it up beforehand so we had no idea what we were getting ourselves into. As we pulled up, I was surprised to see that there was an attached Viking Liquors and there was a gaming parlor inside as well as a spot for ice cream. I was starving for both food and coffee, as was Emily. But we had birthday lunch plans so I grabbed my usual Americano and decided to get a bagel to hold me over until we got to the restaurant. Emily grabbed a latte concoction that she made up based on the menu offerings. We took a seat at one of the couple tables available and waited a few minutes for our drinks and my bagel. I kid you not........ this was the best bagel I've ever had. Most of the time, a bagel will be dense and tough to pull apart while eating. Not this one. It was light and fluffy and full of flavor despite being a plain one. They use these for their sandwiches and it really makes me want to come back and try one out. As for the coffee, the americano was really good. Nothing to really highlight besides it being about what I prefer from one. Emily was really happy with her latte and I gave it a sip and it was indeed really tasty. The baristas that were working all had to be in high school but had stellar customer service. I asked them for a few of the stickers they put on their cups and they kindly hooked us up. All in all, Viking Brews would be my go-to spot for americanos if I lived in the area but sadly do not. It was a great start to a day full of shenanigans and lost cellphones. Stay caffeinated, my friends.

3.5 Stars rounded up to 4.0…read more A very unique dining experience in that this is in what was once a Methodist Church that was built in 1909. There are large stained glass windows and a beautiful interior with high ceilings. The employees are all friendly and polite. The menu is constructed in 3 categories of: "Tier 1" (main entree) "Tier 2" (sides) "Tier 3" (desserts) You order what you want from each Tier for a set price of $23.50. When the server brings your order out to the table it's arranged on a tower holding 3 plates with Tier 1 being the bottom one, Tier 2 the middle one, and finally Tier 3 (your dessert) the top one. It's rather impressive I admit. I chose The Rubie Panini for my Tier 1 choice. It's corned beef, swiss & havarti cheeses with apple & red cabbage sauerkraut & a creamy house-made horseradish-roasted red pepper dressing on light rye bread. It was delicious with just right amount of horseradish to give it a nice bite! For my Tier 2, I chose the Herb Infused Tomato Bisque Soup (GF). It's a savory infusion of tomatoes & aromatic herbs blended to velvety smooth, finished with a dollop of herbed cream cheese and accompanied by a cheesy crostini on the side. Although I found this tasty it was not hot - only mildly warm which was disappointing. For my Tier 3, I chose the Black Forest Pavlova (GF). It's baked meringue with dark chocolate pot de crème and brandied cherry sauce. It was quite sweet and delicious!! To drink I ordered coffee, black (tyvm). It was hot and very good and served in a very nice china cup. Sadly our server didn't come back around to check on our drinks so 3 out of our party of 4 never received a coffee refill until we had finished our first 2 Tiers and was well into our desserts. When she did finally come back with the coffee pot it only had about a quarter of coffee left in it. I ended up with only about a third of a cup (from the bottom of the pot). She said she would come right back with a fresh pot but by the time she did, everyone was finished with their dessert. A good experience with just some minor things that kept it from being a 5 star review. Hours are 11am - 2pm Tuesdays through Saturdays, closed on Sundays and Mondays. Reservations are suggested.

The server was very friendly and the food was well-priced, but I had to knock off a star for a few things. First of all, of the four desserts on the menu, two were sold out and the dining room was only half full at lunch, so, I'm not sure what happened there. Secondly, for a tearoom, the tea was just standard teabags in normal flavors. I guess I would've liked a little variety there. Third, the food was just fine. I ordered a sandwich which was just a BLT with pepper mayo, I think, but it wasn't that exciting. The potatoes were good for a side, though! Anyway, like I said, the atmosphere was my favorite part!

It also has an indoor dining area if planning to sit and stay. Coffee is basic but it's hot at least. There's also bagels as an option. A pretty worn out looking bakery from the looks of things in here. It's obviously been here quite awhile, and is one of the few breakfast places around for locals. The main thing is the doughnuts obviously. Has a few other things to get started in the morning. It's about $2 for coffee, which is pretty basic stuff out of a well. A few flavors. There's nothing really interesting about it. It's about $1.50 for a bagel. These again are pretty basic, with limited options as far as toppings. Come here if getting a pretty basic breakfast. It's basic coffee and lots of doughnuts. There's also some bagels but these are unremarkable.

In the past, the cookies were purchased in the suburbs of Chicago and driven to the Bloomington area. After many failed attempts to source cookies within the band budget, it was suggested we call Denny's! Not only were their cookies $6 cheaper (PER COOKIE), they were willing to customize them to match the show theme of wolves. The price was so nice, we ordered 2 for every high schooler! The cookies came out exactly as I imagined and they were so delicious! We enjoyed some leftovers back home for a couple of days. I am already dreaming about the cookies for the 2026 marching season!

That said, nothing here blows me away taste, or service-wise. I've never had a bad meal or service issue here either. I considered a demerit this time around for the current prices, but frankly it's the same way everywhere, esp for bfast. The biggest downside is probly the ambiance, which is more on the noisy side based on it being a pretty large place these days and still pretty popular. I can't comment on lunch or dinner because we've never tried it, but the place prized brunch spot mostly by folks middle-aged and up (with more families/kids on the weekends) for its all-around consistency.
