This place is an absolute embarrassment. Zero stars if that were an option. We personally confirmed with the manager earlier in the evening that they would be open and serving food after our commitment ended around 9:30 PM. He explicitly told us the kitchen closes at 10:30 PM (despite the hours on the door stating 11 PM). We clearly said we would return around 10 PM to sit down for pizza and a beer. He acknowledged this and said it was fine. We returned at 10:02 PM -- and suddenly the story changed. Now it was takeout only, and apparently there "wasn't enough time." When we showed him the time on our phone, he laughed and dismissed us. This wasn't confusion or bad timing -- it was blatant dishonesty followed by rude, arrogant customer service. If you don't want to serve customers after a certain hour, then be upfront about it. Unprofessional, disrespectful, and completely undeserving of anyone's business. There are countless great food options nearby -- do yourself a favor and avoid this place entirely. PS: Congratulations -- you managed to be the only bad experience we had in all of Australia. Saw this place had low reviews but was looking for takeout pizza, and I'm glad I went. I don't think they get takeout orders often because when I asked it took a while for the OK. I waited inside the restaurant while the pizzas were prepared and ordered a house red. Hone, the only disappointment was that wine; the food, service price was all outstanding. But the prawn linguine was $37 for an unreasonable small portion, yet on the other hand the linguine al pesto was a super large portion. Service was good, food came out pretty fast. The hours are not correct for this place. They closed the dinning room on a Thursday at 9:00 and were doing take away only. This is a very small place on George street with a very long menu. I think they would do better to focus on making a few dishes well vs having 100+ variants on the menu. Most of the yelp ads for restaurants in the Sydney area are years old and you should definitely call ahead. The foot traffic in the Rocks is excellent. This place was crammed and not much room to move inside but the meat lovers pizza we had was amazing! We were seated upstairs where it was pretty warm...heat does travel upward and being above the kitchen area made it warmer. But we made the best of our experience and enjoyed the food and glasses of wine and I munched in a cup of ice. Several hosts checked up on us often and our dining experience wasn't bad at all. I made a a classic rookie mistake when ordering at Zia Pina Pizzeria. When one goes to a place with a type of food in its name, say, "pizza"ria, one would be wise to order that type of food. With a menu that has many pastas and salads listed, however, can you blame me for thinking that one of these items might be decent? I was feeling like I wanted something light, so I ordered the prawn salad for $18. After putting up with the waiter's obnoxious cheekiness, having to ask for forgotten beverages and waiting no shorter than a half hour for our food, I was already underwhelmed by Zia Pina before the food came. My salad, I'm not even kidding, came with about 5 halves of cherry tomatoes and approximately 6 tiny shrimp (NOT prawns, as it had been listed). I would have had a hard time believing it was a proper SIDE salad, let alone a main sized salad for near 20 bucks! After finishing it (note, in about 5 bites), I felt dissatisfied, hungry and ripped off. I wished I had ordered a pizza, but more than anything, I wished I had gone somewhere different. The restaurant was almost at capacity which suggested to us maybe the food is decent despite the Yelp reviews. We were wrong. We ordered a half pepper and half mushroom pizza, house red wine, and garlic bread. The pizza came out in different sized slices instead of a whole pizza. It was like purchasing several slices to make a whole pizza. The pizza was terribly oily, the crust hard yet doughy at the same time. The garlic bread was simply a thin pita type bread with sprinkled pieces of small garlic. The house red wine was a regret, tasting spoiled. We did not finish any of our food or drink. At a total of $53, this was the biggest waste of money during our entire trip to Sydney. read more

I'm inclined to agree with Tony C on this one. I believe the phenomenon of disappointment that people are experiencing with the underwhelming food is contributing to negative exaggeration. The place is average, not completely lousy. I ate here on Saturday night and whilst I was disappointed with the pizza, there were some positives. Firstly 10 of us rocked up at a fairly late hour, after having a few cheeky beers at the Fortune of War nearby, and they were able to accommodate us fairly quickly somehow despite the place being packed. The service was also relatively fast and friendly. But that is about as good as it gets. I've eaten pizza in a lot of places, and whilst I don't consider myself a pizza snob I do know a good pizza, and this place just doesn't deliver on that front. What's even more disappointing is the building has that authentic feel, and having been around for as long as I can remember it really should be delivering top notch pizza. The food is edible but there's just no joy in the experience. There are also some weird inconsistencies, like the $7 pricing on domestic beer. When you can get an imported for the same price why would you go the domestic? The purpose in having the alternatives really is a price point. I seem to recall eating here many many moons again and it being a memorable experience. Unfortunately Saturday night wasn't memorable, it was merely satisfactory for what 10 people who turn up without a reservation at a late hour can deserve to expect. read more

Oh god this place is so bad! I feel embarrassed when tourists come to explore one of the most beautiful spots in Sydney and choose to eat at this rustic, cosy and 'authentic looking' pizzeria. STAY AWAY. Five minutes after ordering our meal we received our pastas. Not the garlic pizza entrée that we ordered. Just our pastas. Thrown on tiny, stained little plates. The meal was extraordinarily bland. When we did receive our garlic pizza it was awful! So you know how you can by minced garlic in a jar? I estimate that about half a jar was smeared on our pizza, so gross. It was just one of those meals where I just wanted to complain, whinge and whine about it. Zia Pina have stolen my money. That is how I feel after attempting to eat lunch at their restaurant this afternoon. I made the fatal mistake of thinking that back in 2010 when I enjoyed their pizzas that this meant they were an alright Italian place. Perhaps time has ruined them or pizza is something hard to get wrong. Either way I'm never going back and feel like I'm obligated to warn the general public. We ordered Garlic Prawns for an entree; which came out barely warm. Not hot, barely warm. Best described as "horrible" the fact that one of the six prawns had a dangling vein (of poo) really didn't help. That's $20 down the drain. The pastas came out and for a second I thought that they were entree sizes. In the end it doesn't matter as we barely touched them before paying and leaving. The two pastas were a special crab linguini ($25) and a spaghetti carbonara ($20). The crab pasta had the flavour of boiled pasta and jarred minced garlic. The amount of crab was probably less than a single claws worth and my fiancé could only swallow two bites before giving up. My Spaghetti Carbonara was ok. Creamy, rich, bacon/ham, cream and cream. I ate about a quarter before realising that this calorie full wasn't worth the effort of chewing. We pushed our plates forward, got up, paid our $65 and left. Walking away down George street the only thing I could think of was how much money we had just wasted and the meh taste left in our mouths. If you must go there, stick to the pizza. read more

First time in Sydney and heard great things about Zia Pina from my friends as they have visited before. All of our meals came out together except for one, which ended up being well undercooked. We tried to get the attention of a waiter but ended up going downstairs to talk to someone who gave a very vague response so we weren't sure whether they were going to make a new pizza or simply compensate us by taking it off the bill. We waited another 15 minutes where the rest of us finished and share the last of our meals with our friends when finally they brought up another pizza... We got no apology, no offer for a discount or any explanation for why the service seemed to be chaotic and unorganised. After the disappointing service, which we tried to discuss it with several of the staff, we were asked if we wanted anything else. Don't come here if you want to have a good time. Also do not order the "Chefs Special" mushroom risotto, it was subpar and would disappoint their Nonna. read more

We've dined here a couple of times while shopping in The Rocks. Without exception the pizza has been average and the service, absolutely, horrible. Never sit upstairs at this place and always try to get seated near the window.....at least you'll have something to look at rather than the wait staff hanging around the stairs & bar area. When we were in Sydney, we had eaten frequently in the Rocks area. It was our last night in Sydney and my friend decided we should eat at Zia Pina's Pizzeria. We were seated immediately and the waiter brought water over to the table. My friend ordered a salad and I ordered a medium margherita pizza. The salad was enough for 2 people with various types of lettuce, tomatoes, anchovies cucumbers and tuna. She could not finish the salad. I got the medium margherita pizza which was delicious. The only caveat of the evening was that we could use a charge card or we could pay in cash but we could not split the bill. As a result one of us ended up paying the full bill and we worked out the bill amongst ourselves afterwards. The fact that they don't split the bill is listed on the front window-we didn't see it and we were not told when we ordered. Otherwise it was an excellent meal and I would recommend a visit. read more

For my wife and I, the food itself was mostly disappointing. The appetizer, garlic bread with cheese, was actually a cheese pizza that tasted too much garlic for our taste. I ordered the calzone and was underwhelmed by it. Lots of bread with its underside burnt and little substance in the middle to really make your mouth water with taste. The tomato sauce was place atop the calzone and it really tasted like it came strait out of a can, watery-like. My wife had Gnocchi with Gorgonzola Sauce which she enjoyed so at least she was happy with the main course. I will say the service was fine and food was delivered quickly. The setting makes for a nice night out with your significant other. Yesterday, my friend and I went to to Zia Pina Pizzeria for lunch. I had been to Zia Pina quite a few times over the course of the last few years, and had enjoyed their pizza very much. However, yesterday's visit to Zia Pina Pizzeria was just disappointing. We decided to order two pasta dishes - the Spaghetti Carbonara and Fettuccine Salmon. Both dishes were barely edible. The Spaghetti Carbonara was served to us with most of it coated in unmelted cheese, therefore, I couldn't really taste anything other than cheese. The pasta and bacon were nice, but the whole dish was also sitting in a small pool of oil. The dish was definitely far too oily and a very big disappointment. The Fettuccine Salmon, (which was on the chef's recommendations menu) was served, also dripping with nothing but oil and spoiled salmon. The dish was not pleasant at all and had a strange taste to it. Also a disappointment. Though the service and atmosphere was okay, both dishes were extremely unpleasant, vile and so overpriced - the total bill was over $50. Whenever we used to visit this restaurant in the Rocks a few years ago, we would love the pizza and atmosphere. Now, this restaurant is falling apart and it's actually quite a sad thing to witness. Have in the past had some great meals and evenings out here and have reviewed the same, and introduced friends to this experience with the red checked tablecloths. Such a shame that our visit recently was particularly let down by the service received which was lackadaisical at best - few mistakes made along the way due to just not listening and main courses arriving quite a time apart for what was only a table of 4 - to downright rude, even from "management". The food has been generally good on past visits - traditional Italian. Most recently though my Spaghetti Allo Scoglio was a LOT of spaghetti, the "sprinkling" of tomato was very heavy, the mussels were plump and tasty, but had not been de-bearded which was unpleasant and the prawns were somewhat overcooked. The Spaghetti Vongole arrived with no parsley (though says has parsley according to the menu), we asked for it and they brought chilli, also had to ask for ground black pepper - not their best showing by a very long shot. Given the plethora of quality options available in the area, for both Italian and other cuisines, we will not be returning to Zia Pina again. (Be aware, even though not noted online anywhere - at least as of today - they will not split bills, in any way. Don't know if this is a change in policy as not had an issue in the past) read more

The pizzas were cheesy and the crust was doughy. Overall it was a pretty ordinary pizza. Not bad, but definitely not what we expected. Not a good thing when you have 8 hungry mouths to fill. The thing that was the single most amazing rip-off I have ever come across was when it came to paying the bill. We had ordered a jug of lemonade. What came was just enough to fill each glass half full, maybe 2/3. We were charged $35(!) - in words thirty-five Dollars - for that jug. We questioned that price, assuming a mistake but we were arrogantly told that that was the price - full stop. I used to love this place because the pizzas were always great. I went there last Sunday and was horrified at the service. The pizzas are not what they used to be, but not terrible... just ok. When the 3 of us entered the restaurant we asked if we could take the front table and they said no that it was reserved. As we were half way through our meal, all the staff (and I mean ALL the staff) started sitting around the table that they said that was reserved. Obviously the best table had been reserved for themselves!!! Mind you, there were plenty of other empty tables, and the whole upstairs floor that they could have discreetly eaten their meals. If they had taken their meals a few at a time, it would have looked better. I was shocked, and have never seen anything like it. Mind you we weren't the only people in the restaurant. This was 3pm on Sunday and there were a number of other people in there still eating. When we interrupted them to pay, they seemed very annoyed that we had interrupted their lunch. I'm guessing this place has changed hands, and it would be great to let the new owners know how terrible their staff antics are. It's so sad to see a Sydney icon go down this track. read more
