We had an extremely negative experience at Zimmet Law. We worked with the lawyer Debra Hammerman, as well as Monique Gravely and Jacqueline Constante. We used Zimmet Law to purchase our home in Brooklyn, NY. Besides being generally hard to get in contact with the lawyers, 12 hours before our closing, the lawyers sent us a final Closing Disclosure with over $100,000 in mistakes that they did not catch. There was a mistake in our taxes that they did not catch. The title company they hired also made significant mistakes, leading to them giving us documents with huge mistakes in them 12 hours before the closing. Our lawyer, Debra Hammerman, did not come to our closing and was not present for most it, so we had to sort out all of these issues on our own. There were even more mistakes she didn't catch, and it led to an extremely stressful closing that lasted well over 8 hours. Her employee Monique was rude to me for asking more clarifying questions during the closing, saying we were "going in circles". I don't understand how someone who has made a $100,000 mistake could possibly feel justified in thinking that victim of that mistake might want more validation on other numbers they have created. Furthermore, the paralegal Jackie was looped into conversations for closing details about a week before the closing. I spent 3 days straight emailing her and calling her to try to get answers to questions about the closing, like how the money would be transferred, and she never responded. I confirmed with the front desk that she was not sick or on vacation, and our lawyer Debra Hammerman was also cc'ed on those emails and neither of them ever responded to our emails or calls. I have no idea why they waited until 9:30 PM to give us the final closing documents, when our closing was at 10 am the next day. It was a nightmare. Finally, Debra Hammerman herself provided a POA since one of our purchasers would be out of town at the closing. Despite us filling out the POA as per her instructions, it turned out she hadn't requested addresses of notarized signature witnesses which led to us desperately trying to contact our witnesses during this extremely chaotic closing to get their addresses. Why didn't she request addresses in the POA itself? Pure incompetence is my bet. Finally, the lawyer, paralegal, and all of the staff from Zimmet Law completely forgot to bring up holding money in escrow from incomplete punch list items. It fell by the wayside as we attempted to hammer out all the other mistakes the law firm has made, and it meant that no money was held in escrow as requested while we awaited final punchlist items to be addressed. This was a totally terrible experience for us and I would never recommend this law firm to anyone. read more

I set up an appointment to go over a leasing issue I've encountered - my landlord is canceling the lease agreement despite I've signed the lease and paid the brokerage fee. Prior to this, the landlord or the agent suggested I should hide my underaged child from the occupant list so they don't need to put up ugly window shields on their nice-looking apartment. I refused to do so and they ceased the lease. Mr. Brian Zimmet: 1) 10 min late for the call without explanation, 2) said neither the landlord nor the agent had done anything wrong, 3) I brought to him I think the agent has broken the code of ethics in several ways and the landlord's decision violates NYC tenant law by refusing to rent to a family with a child; he said he's not familiar with the code ethics (despite him being the real estate lawyer) and asked me to call the police if feel discriminated (what a nice person), 4) refused to help me with filing a complaint on the landlord or the agent, asking me to find a long island lawyer (the property is in Queens but nevertheless he should have a license covering NY state). Throughout the whole process, he is impatient and rude and ended the call in 10 min despite his assistant booked for 30 min. And the fact that he called the action of the agent/landlord "nothing wrong, nothing illegal" seems weird to me. Will not do business with them anymore. read more

If you're anything like I am, you dread working with lawyers. Sure, cost is an unsettling variable, but for me, the real concern is working with lawyers who are unable to explain basic ideas thoroughly, such that I can make a go-forward decision. More often than not, I find myself hours into an attorney-client relationship and still having to navigate seemingly obvious information. (It's infuriating.) Either the lawyers don't know how to communicate effectively or they are being deliberately nebulous. In either scenario, I eventually have no choice but to give up and hope their advice works out. That's unacceptable, in my opinion. Thankfully, there are firms and lawyers like Zimmet Law Group and Brian Zimmet. I contacted Zimmet Law Group over email on a weekend, and heard back the same day, with a promise to look at my documents I needed reviewed the next day. Now, we know it's unlikely for that to be standard practice for all potential clients reading this review, but it doesn't matter because the idea here is that they a) cared to reply and b) cared to make time for me because...c) they actually care. That's so uncommon in the legal profession. I spoke directly with Brian Zimmet over the weekend, the very day after I emailed the office, and he answered my questions effectively without making me feel like I needed to rush or that I was a dolt. Brian gave me the respect and space to not know something. Moreover, his answers didn't bring up a ton of additional questions - they were declarative, clear, and complete. It has taken me months of working with another attorney on these same documents, and I made little progress because they couldn't lay out the reality for me in a way that was digestible and that outlined a next step that made sense. Brian, however, got the job done, and in a (tiny) fraction of the time. I have a few basic follow-up questions for him about my case, but I know before even reaching out to him that I can expect patience, decency, and clarity. It is understandable that deals fall through. New York City is a difficult place to do business but you expect your legal representation to be provide you a service that you can trust protects you. From the start there were multiple warning signs. it took 4 revisions for our contracts to be correct. Simple mistakes like the incorrect attorney on the contracts had to be pointed out over and over. The process proceeded with lethargy. The apartment in question had a troubled past and therefore needed a lot of attention to detail. A major lawsuit on the building filed days before the contracts were signed went unread. We had to get a copy from a family friend and read ourselves coupled with having to reread the contracts over spending countless hours trying to get them correct. Even after the contracts were signed, we felt that our deposit was not protected and eventually the deal fell through under some murky surrounds. Thankfully we managed to get our earnest back. I personally hope to never encounter Zimmet Law Group again. Countless opportunity, financial and time has been wasted. I'm now restarting from scratch. read more

It felt like we were one of way too many clients the firm has and we were not given full attention. There were a lot of follow ups required on our end to move things along, and things did not go as efficiently or as smoothly as it should have. We had to hold their hand through the whole process to move things along, and it was incredibly time-consuming. I don't have much experience dealing with real estate or attorneys, but when I told my friends and family what we were dealing with all of them warned me this was not normal, and this firm was making this way more difficult than it needed to be. In the end, while they got the job done, some very important details had been overlooked that caused a lot of delays and stress, and if I could go back in time I would probably chose a different firm to represent us. read more

Hired to represent me against eviction by ex husband in selling our coop. Mr Zimmet was hired to negotiate and re write part of my settlement to allow me to move out and have ex take over apartment expenses.... the next day after hiring Mr Zimmet we got an offer on apt... Mr Zimmet got involved in the contract without my permission when a flat fee contract/closing lawyer quit, ..... billed me hourly, never responded to email on questions to clarify my original settlement, zero communication.....use $3200 of $ 5000 Retainer . I should have fired him when he said "if I don't listen to him then I should find another attorney"...... also some other inappropriate comments as " stop worrying about money (referring to his fees) you are going to make make xxxx on the sale of apartment"- How dare he count my money!
