As a high school student, I always used to find Zulu Records' employees incredibly intimidating, especially whenever I made the mistake of wandering in while still wearing my school uniform. Those withering looks... oh, the shame! There was a definite Empire Records vibe to the place, minus an annoying Renee Zellweger doppelganger. Moving on, unlike most music stores of late, Zulu steers away from the mainstream emporium feel and focuses on providing customers with quality music. In other words, music unlikely to come packaged alongside some synchronized dance routine. Emphasis is placed on independent musicians but more established ones pop up regularly in the shelves. The used section may be a limited but for those who stubbornly cling to their turntables, a decent array of vinyl is available. Concert tickets are also sold here.

Most of our record collection is delightful happenstance, but there are a few that we've purchased for more than a dollar. And in this quest for specific artists, Zulu offers lots of selection at predictable prices. Most recently my boyfriend got a double Doors album here for $15 and a Bob Dylan record for $13. Not bad prices, but I'd rather strain my neck looking through the thrift bins. As mentioned in other reviews, Zulu is a axis of Vancouver's music scene when it comes to ticket sales.

Well, first off I was struck with curiosity about the architectural layout. Wooden panels, and beams. A real old bookstore feel to it. The floor is by-level, so although there is a lot crammed in there, it isn't an overwhelming clutter. The usual islands of files, and a nice little music listening bench, then at the back, a spiral staircase leading up to a second level where used C.D's are sold. Unfortunately the "world" music section is sadly lacking. The front counter which has listening stations as well, is colourfully tiled. I asked the employee about the history of the shop. It used to house an architectural office ha-ah! What a surprise.... NOT. This is probably one of the larger C.D. and Record shops in Vancouver. Prices are high, but this is Vancouver Canada, baby!

I didn't realize this place got slammed with one-star reviews on Yelp until after the visit. To be honest, I had rock-bottom expectations of the place. Where I'm from (California), I don't get too many decent experiences at the few local game shops I (seldom) visit, and I'm not talking about those mediocre GameStop or EB Games stores either, those are all from another realm of retail misery altogether. I was considering to get a complete copy of Sonic 3D Blast for Sega Saturn in very good condition, but in the end I didn't think shelling out $34.95 CAD was that sensible (because its Sonic 3D Blast, not just in general; I didn't come to Vancouver to buy a game anyhow, lol.), although other complete copies go for around the same amount on eBay US as of the time of this review. The friendly, laidback owner Eddie was cool about it after I voiced my reconsideration. I haven't looked into CDs and DVDs so I can't comment on them. I deducted one star from this review because of the prices, but I admired the owner and his selection and how decorative his store is with all the retro games there. I told him I'd be back, and I would someday.

One of the employees asked if there was anything I was looking for and since he was working where Star Trek would have been, I told him. They had none on the floor. He directed me to the man behind the counter, where they keep the pricier comics. Yikes! But they weren't crazy pricey. I ended up with two. The two men in the back reminded me of the two owners of a bookstore I frequented in the States, both were kind and friendly. The man running the register up front was just as sweet and kind. I didn't exactly have the best experiences in comic stores back in the states, and I was a bit daunted by this place. But everything was so different from my past experiences. I loved it!

Unfortunately, this was on the weekend. This Coles bookstore is closed on Saturdays and Sundays. I've not heard of retail stores that were closed on weekends! Honestly, that's really inconvenient for a lot of people! And it closes at 5pm on weekdays, FYI. Anyhow, I ventured back again during the week and I was very impressed with this store (despite its abbreviated hours of operation). The selection of books was quite good (considering the store itself is not large), and there are some good prices to be had (especially on classics. They were offering three classic literature books for $10 when I was there). Most impressive was the staff: there was an engaging lady and a man working when I visited and both couldn't have been more pleasant or helpful. I could have chatted with them much longer, about books and Vancouver and the States (we just moved here from Seattle) and more, but I arrived at the store at 4:30pm and, well, there wasn't much time before they closed for browsing and lengthy chatting. But they were super nice and very knowledgeable about new publications and where I could find certain books in print and recommendations for me to find Stanley Park trail maps, etc. I also liked how they have a reward program and card, as I am a book junkie and plan on doing lots of business here and at Indigo.
