My wife and I were in Basel on vacation. We had a rental car and chose to check out Zum Braunen Mutz which was rated highly through online searches. We went at 9pm and the place seemed pretty busy still but they were able to seat us and our two small dogs. We really enjoyed their beer pretzel, their rasti (potato cake) with veggies and their pork cordon bleu. When we were ordering, our server said they were out of pretzels for the night but would check with the kitchen, and they were able to make one fresh for us. We enjoyed our experience there. Solid place! Who knew Swiss beer could be so delicious? I haven't eaten in the restaurant but I have spent a little too much time on the pub side. Delicious beers. Servers were nice. Beer was fairly priced. The patrons keep to themselves, and the room was appropriately sized for the crowd they draw, which works in your favor if you want some "alone time" but want to be out and about. I requested a pretzel and never got it, and requested a different beer, neither of which were served but neither were charged to me either. We had an enjoyable meal. The food was good, the service was friendly but slow and the atmosphere was casual and relaxed. The restaurant has several outdoor tables - about half with umbrellas. The outdoor sees overlook Barfusserplatz (Barefoot Place/Square). Inside, there is a bar with seating on the right and lots of indoor seating on the left. What a fun restaurant we stumbled into! We can from the Christmas market and from the outside we didn't realize how busy with people just enjoying their Saturday. Lots of large groups of friends and families gathering have lunch and or drinks. Locals and tourists. We were able to sit right away waitress spoke very good English and the menu had English as well. I ordered the bratwurst with onion sauce and hash browns. One of my favorite German/ Swiss dishes! It was fantastic! Great flavor and something I just can't find even close to as good at home! My mom ordered the meatloaf with mashed potatoes and gravy. It was very good as well. Both meals were heavy but for a late lunch on a snowy day it was perfect! When it fills up, sharing tables is encouraged. This place has a good beer selection and a decent menu. I decided on a pretzel appetizer, a pork schnitzel codon bleu entre and an order or fries. The entre was good in that when I cut into it melted cheese oozed out of it and gave it nice flavor along with the ham. The fries were OK and the beers were good. My work colleague ordered and iced coffee with a scoop of ice cream in it and it looked and tasted amazing. I never thought about a scoop of ice cream in espresso but it was good! When visiting Basel, this is a great place to to have dinner. My wife and I had two different schnitzels with mixed vegetables and a mixed salad. Our waitress, Daniela, was attentive and made sure everything was perfect. We speak very little German, she spoke passable English and helped us with the menu. I want to find a Swiss food restaurant for our last night dinner here in Basel. I compare a few restaurants in Yelp and choose this one because in one review saying that the locals like to hangout here. It must be worth to try and it is right. I order the Lady Schnitzel with a side mixed salad and my husband orders a meatloaf. I ask a young gentleman server whether I can add the mushroom sauce on the side. He is so nice to accommodate my request. Everything is excellent including the wine which is German whistling. Later I find out the young gentleman's name is Branko and he tells me he father is the chef of the restaurant. After we finish our meal, I tell Branko that please do not change the style of the restaurant because it is authentic of Swiss and lot of people will appreciate it. read more

Finally at 9:30 pm I asked where our meal was and they had totally forgotten about us even though there were very few patrons and three servers. Loved this place - very much a locals sort of place with a beer hall vibe. Food is decent, not at all pretentious... seems like Swiss/German comfort food. The menu isn't huge but there's enough variety for everyone. Several fish and vegetarian options. Also a "seasonal summer menu". The service is good and while English isn't the 1st language of this establishment, all the servers were very nice and accommodating. I also liked that this restaurant seems to be in the heart of a bustling neighborhood, right on the trolly line. It was perhaps 10 minutes on the #6 from the conference center. Solid, traditional beer hall setting in downtown Basel, right off Barfusser platz and one of the central tram stops in town. Outside seating was available, but on an early Friday evening, with a Jazz festival starting up outside in a few hours, there were no seats to be had. So we ventured inward. Nice atmosphere inside (for those of us who like the beer hall sort of thing). With pretzels hanging on a rack on each table and quick drink service, everyone was made happy and comfortable, kids included. Menus were handed out, and they even had English versions for us German-challenged patrons. A decent selection of beer, but not a huge list; mostly local swiss brews that I was unfamiliar with. On draft they had a blonde, and amber, a dunkel and one dark beer. The first two were quite delicious. The wife had the dark and loved it (I sampled it and was also a fan). The menu here covered most of the bases for both adults and kids. I had the special with baby pork, ratatouie, and baked potato. It was being hyped as a once-per-year thing (for the jazz festival), but I wasn't all that impressed with the result: the pork lacked flavor yet had too much gristle, and the ratatouille was mediocre; at least the baked potato was good. Still, most of the group was happy and enjoyed their dinner. The low key and louder atmosphere made us worry less about the kids antics, so it turned out to be a good family place. read more

Know the "Zeughauskeller" of Zurich? This is a Germanic baby version of that restaurant, nested in the center of Basel at Barfüsserplatz. It has a simple variety of German/Swiss dishes including egli knusperli, cordon bleu, rindstartar, bratwurst, bretzel, etc. A good place for a hearty lunch/dinner coupled with German beers in a relaxed style area. Stick with sitting downstairs at the "bierhalle". It doesn't require a reservation. Upstairs will require reservations and it is no longer a casual environment. read more

The fish was soggy with a bad "fishy" taste. It was as it the fish was fried previously, then microwaved and served to you. There was absolutely no creativity when it came to the boiled potatoes. Peeled, boiled and put on your plate. Terrible dish makes the dish and cost difficult to swallow. I ordered the meatloaf with mashed potatoes and vegetables. It was edible, not bad but far from great. The mushroom sauce held the dish together. The vegetables consisted of yellow and orange carrots. The mashed potatoes were puréed potatoes with little seasoning but plenty of butter. Come in for a beer, go elsewhere for food. I like the room inside. 60 CHF for two lunch entrees, one beer and a coke. I know Switzerland is expensive and I don't mind spending money for a nice meal, but this was not at all satisfying. She also brought out bread before the meal. It was dry and lacked flavor. No butter or condiments were included. The server asked if it was good and I replied that I have had better. This place was absolutely empty when I came. It kind of felt like a ghost town and it was a Friday night! I really liked how large the menu was. Their beers are great! My uncle really liked their beers and I got a bottled cider. It was so good! I got the raclette burger, my mom got the meatloaf and my dad got the fish. We were there with my extended family as well. I really enjoyed my burger! It had bacon on it as well! The fries were good as well! It was a filling meal. My mom really liked her meatloaf as well. The gravy on it was very good and savory. A note, the bier bar is on the street level, the restaurant is upstairs. I believe they serve food at the bier bar, but we ate at the restaurant. The ambiance is fine--and pretty typical of a outdoor cafe. Prices are high (though again, expected in Switzerland). The disappointment however comes from the food. My boyfriend ordered the "meatloaf with potato salad," which is (just so you aware) 2 giant hotdog slices with some overly mayo'ed potatoes on the side. I ordered the tomato salad after seeing the folks next to me get the sausage and cheese salads (which looked like sliced hotdog over day-old wilted and overdressed iceberg). It was mediocre at best--mozzarella was like something by DiGiorno and tomatoes were under-ripe and overdressed with super sweet balsamic vinegar-definitely not typical of Europe. Beer was decent, but the killer came with the bill--50 CHF for an appetizer, 2 beers and an entree. Don't be misled by the great reviews for this place-- go across the river for the truly amazing meals, and great local atmosphere. This place is a tourist trap. read more

Limited review: I really enjoyed the liver dumpling soup with beef marrow! The broth was strong but not greasy and was tasty with the bread. The dumpling was made of ground liver which was delicious too but if you don't like liver you should stay away. There was no dough so it was more of a meatball. The zolli wurstli was also tasty with the horseradish but seemed like a high quality hot dog. They have a good beer selection and wasting at the bar was fine. The first waiter we spoke to (or tried to, she spoke no english) was incredibly rude and didn't want us to sit at a table if we were not having a full meal, despite the place being half empty. However another server took over and more than made up for it by being very friendly, and translating items to english. Have been there 2 times. First time in May , after sitting inside for 1 hour, suddenly a note was put on the table saying that it was reserved. It appeared that those tables were for regular customers! May-be they do not like new customers or tourists overthere. Have complained to the manager and suggested to ask customers if they want to seat at another table. He agreed that would be more polite indeed. 2nd time in September The beer served was half foam/half beer. When complaining it was said wait a little, then the foam will disappear. Of course it did, but then the glass was half empty and we do not want to pay for a half glass. Menu was rather limited compared to a few years ago, so no improvement. read more

This was a nice brew pub. The beers on tap were good and I had some excellent mussels here. I felt that the service was slower than average in Basel but the food was nice and well presented. I would recommend sticking to the beer on tap as they had other options but I had the feeling it was not what they were known for. November 2017 -We were told this would be a good example of Swiss dining. If this is than it is not for us. You go in and there are large tables where if there is a spot they point it out and you are on your own. A couple menus get tossed your way and in a few minutes the server comes back and asks for your order. Answering questions was bothersome to her. The place was loud so difficult to hear or talk. There was one basket of bread on the table for all and it was down the end with a group of guys enjoying it. We asked for water 4 times and got seltzer water at the end of the meal. We do not like seltzer water so did not drink it but they added 5.90 CMF for each! We had a soup and an entree of pasta and sauce.The food was ok but I would not order it again. We didn't stay for anything else and the bill was 41CMF's. OMG. For what! We got out of there before they charged us to breath. If you want beer and so so food at high prices this is the place for you. Word to the wise if you want water order TAP water. read more
