Only a couple of short blocks from the well-trafficked street where Zum Leopold sits, Zum Holundestrauch feels much more like a local's place. It's on a quiet street where one must go to discover it rather than just stumble across it en route elsewhere. I never went inside either restaurant as both sport pleasant outdoor seating where I was able to sit despite the presence of "reserved" signs atop the tables. The menus are even similar between the two restaurants, or at least were similar in the categories I cared about: fried cheese and goulash. Both were every bit as good here as they were at Zum Leopold and I think you'll be best rewarded at both places by sticking to the Austrian basics. Not to keep comparing the two restaurants but one reminded me of the other and vice-versa and I honestly couldn't say that one was any better than the other. If you have time, try both, or if you like the idea of a less-traveled, more little neighborhood place come here instead. read more

Are a tourist and looking for a place to eat local or native food? This is your jam! I was looking for a place to have lunch as I was hungry and I looked and looked. I knew that I did not want to eat american food but this one stood out and looked very family oriented and with local and traditional flavors. O walked in and everyone shares the table. So if you sit at a table with 4 to 6 chairs and there are 3 left, you can expect to be will be sharing the table at some point. I loved this place because a lot of locals go to it to have lunch. They have a lunch menu of the day but I wanted to have Wien schnitzel. Don't be shocked if you are the inly tourist in the restaurant! The service was good and efficient but keep in mind that they only take CASH ! The ambience was good, sharing tables, family style. Everyone was very welcoming even when I was the only tourist. We stopped in to this cozy Austrian restaurant for an early dinner without reservations on a Wednesday night during the busy Christmas season. The manager was able to squeeze us in despite having a large table reserved for a later group. Even though we don't speak any German, we had no trouble communicating and the broad menu of Austrian cuisine was translated into many languages including English. The atmosphere was very pub like and the food and service was good. I enjoyed the Naturalistic schnitzel(not breaded, served with rice and a nice gravy) as did my wife with the traditional Weiner schnitzel with lemon wedge and salad. Prices were very reasonably-two dinner and 4 glasses of house red wine was only 35€ before tip. My only knock is that it was VERY Smokey with at least half the patrons chain smoking so for Americans used to the smoke-free dining of the US this was a BIG adjustment-we almost left just after we were seated but didn't want to be rude. Ordered a cordon bleu mit salad and it was really big, but I found it a little salty. My friend was okay with the saltiness but also agreed that the portion was way too big. We also ordered a schweinsbraten mit knodel and it was wayyyyyyyy too salty. As usual, the portions were really generous. The atmosphere was great though, and they have a menu with French, English, Italian and Polish. The prices are also a lot more reasonable than cafe landtmann nearby, which really looked like a tourist trap Would still recommend the location though. The taste might just not be up to my uncultured palette. read more

Brilliant local fare, authentic setting, excellent value. Check out the daily specials on their web site, like specialities from Mangalitza pork! The place has been run by the same family for three generations, and they go out of their way to make you feel welcome. The Grüner Veltliner, Welschriesling, and Gemischter Satz wines are actually from their own vineyards, and the Nußschnapps is also home made. They currently also have a rather unusual "Sweet Veltliner" from their own vineyards, which is popular especially with the ladies. In a nutshell, this is The Real McCoy. The only thing not to like is that they're closed on weekends... Oh, some further details: They have three tables outdoors in the summer and four tables inside on the ground floor, which is where people can smoke. What is hidden from the casual passer by is a huge beautiful vaulted basement which is for non-smoking guests. They always have highly varied and always interesting seasonal offers. At present (May/June), try the deep fried elder flowers in batter with cranberries for desert. Hint: Ask for some whipped cream to go with it, they will (as always) happily oblige and it makes this desert even more gorgeous (and artery busting)... read more
