The eatery and bar are tucked into a stone house that dates back to 1668, if only the walls could talk. The bar and restaurant feature local Quebec cuisine and is a gem. I did, and the inside was dark gray from edge to edge. Rather than apologizing or immediately offering to replace it, she said that if I really wanted to, she could take it back, but that it looked fine to her. At that point, I gave up. I ate an overcooked, chewy, waterlogged steak along with cold frites and vegetables that had clearly been sitting for a while. The service made an already disappointing meal even worse. Steak Avenue has a nice atmosphere, but if they can't cook a steak properly, or stand behind it when they don't, I can't recommend it. Steak Avenue should be called "Steak Cul-de-Sac," because you'll want to walk in... and then walk right back out.

A couple Californians in a big pickup truck were not greeted with confetti and rose petals by all of the Quebecois. Not to fault them, I'm sure not all of our predecessors left a glowing impression. Regardless, walking into Pub Dunn we came in from the cold, in more ways than one. A good bartender will listen to a couple of youngsters with a story and seem interested. Whether or not it's a good story is immaterial - with a great bartender you'll never know the difference. So, we decompressed for a while over pints of local beer and some fantastic venison sausage and pie, and, a couple hours later, crunched our way through the snow to our hibernating, rear-wheel-drive symbol of jingoism and imperial hubris. A week later we were back in L.A., where the only snow was relegated to the peaks on the horizon and the sand on the beach would burn your feet. At that point, I realized that probably more people here than there refuse to speak English, and random people still treat you like you peed in their Cheerios. And here, there's no Pub Thomas Dunn. We're less for it.
