We wandered around old Quebec City and felt lucky to find Le Pape George's on umbrella alley- which right now has hockey sticks. We had 9 people and they sat 5 at a table and 4 at the bar and we were completely fine with the arrangement. It is quaint and small and we could see our family and even shared some food since we Were close enough. The cheese fondue is not to be missed . It was absolutely the perfect start to our meal. Then we shared an original poutine and it also was delicious- best I had on our trip thus far! I ordered mussels for my meal and a steaming pot arrived and they were yummy. After taking the funicular down from the upper city, we wandered the old town and found Le Pape Georges. It was on my list to try and we discovered it on umbrella alley. We were seated on the patio and our very sweet server was right out to take our drink order. Since we are eating Poutine all over Canada in search of our favorite. We so enjoyed sitting on the patio, it was a beautiful day, we were people watching and enjoying the umbrellas place up the alley. Our poutine was delivered to the table and I can honestly say it was our favorite. The fries were crunch and creamy on the inside. The gravy was rich and had a deep flavor and the cheese curds had lightly melted. Every bite was perfect. The eatery and bar are tucked into a stone house that dates back to 1668, if only the walls could talk. The bar and restaurant feature local Quebec cuisine and is a gem. A little stiff staff who reversed to English even when spoken to in French. There is indoor and outdoor seating but nearly no one sat inside due to the nice ambiance of the outdoor seating. It's rather small with only a few tables both inside and out - many of the outdoor tables are in direct sun even with the umbrellas. Tables outside are right next to a beautiful walkway decorated with hanging colorful umbrellas which makes for a spot for instagram photos - many people stopped and took photos while we were eating. Indoors is very dark and has a few tables and a bar. There is also a small restroom inside. Fondue appetizer - excellently done, if a little on the greasy side. Served with a side of bread cubes and you can add on a sausage. The sausage is impeccable, but I would've preferred an option to add a plate of veggies/fruits as well. Topped with a single pecan. They also carry peroni and serve them in lovely tall glasses. Light and airy beer. House salad is so fresh and comes with a lovely vinaigrette and a lovely mix of pecans and dried cranberries. Loved this place located in the umbrella alley. We sat at the bar and unbeknownst to us the owner was the cook behind the bar. It was the smallest kitchen I've ever seen. Tucked away in the corner of the bar. I was amazed the at the food that was coming out of this tiny kitchen area. The owner was friendly and engaging talking to us about his restaurant. The waitress that waited on us was also very friendly and attentive. We split the Oktoberfest hotdog with fries, it was delicious. The interior and ambiance were very nice. So where to begin...we went here initially for the fondue and instead we got lots of amazing food, outstanding service, and a very fun and enjoyable evening. The owner came out to visit our table and was a riot (funny), we really enjoyed talking to him. As for the delicious food, our group of four had: Fondue, Tuna tartare, Beef tartare, and two Steak paninis. Everything was cooked to perfection and the atmosphere was very cozy and inviting. Well I had high hopes for this place. It was our first evening in QC and we were overwhelmed by the tourists crowding the streets. We found a table at this place on a little side street and the staff was friendly and there was enough on the menu to satisfy vegetarians so we took it. Wine was served promptly-food a little slower but not terrible. The part that was so odd was that with our Quebec fondue we were served both a bread basket and a huge plate of celery. Yes, you read that right, celery. This was not the vegetable plate promised by the menu. And it was not fresh and it was the skinny inside parts. A lot of fiber to be sure but very strange. Fondue was fine as were side salads but nothing outstanding. A strange experience indeed. read more

The good.... The lobster roll and large house salad with lobster and goat cheese were good. The eh... the wine selection is very limited. They are challenged with limited seating. The bad, the staff isn't trained well. It was mid October and about 45 degrees outside with no space heaters. They didn't have seating inside and we were only given an option if sitting at a 2top in the dark outside on a slope. We asked about a 4 top in the light and nobody was waiting behind us and they said no. Then another 2 top came in and got seated inside. (Be warned, the menu options are a bit limited.) My husband enjoyed his locally brewed beer, but my Chardonnay was unfortunately a disappointment. The service was friendly and prompt, and we appreciated the fact they welcomed our 3 month old baby. We sat on the outdoor patio in front of the pub and it was quite pleasant. The pub is situated on a beautiful, quaint street in Old Quebec. There was live music playing inside, and we were able to enjoy it from the patio, where we could still hear, but it wasn't as loud. The pub was located in a side street which was great and we sat outside which was great. The server was nice and spoke English too. We ordered a cheese/meat board called the papelle. Interesting place with original 16/17th century bricks interior. We stopped by on our first day here coz it was really closed to our hotel. Food wise, it's ok. Perhaps because of the location, I thought it was a bit overpriced for what it is, hence 3 stars. Hubby got a beef stew but it barely had any beef, and a bit salty imo (even from a Midwestern/Chicago standard :o ) . My steak and fries were ok. Highlight was the salad that it came with.
