This is a toughy - I was under the impression that it was going to be way less expensive. I was quoted twice what I thought (based on conversations prior to the in person estimate). The drivers missed my window and that caused a huge setback for me - and lots of stress. I had left the site and had to return, which they accommodated. When they arrived they were very nice and professional however I was super disappointed by the overcharging tactic or what felt like bait and switch. I absolutely refused to pay their exorbitant fees and negotiated - I got what I wanted but was so disappointed by it. I mean, if you wait until the day of your move you will be overcharged so I suggest you get the estimate in advance I think the business model is great and well executed - just wish it was more honest so people can know what to expect up front The guys did a good job and didn't cause any damage or waste time. The business is a scam. I had a large couch, 1 coffee table and a ceiling fan. Was told $129 to move the items, which were near the front door and then a range for the space on the truck but that they wouldn't know until it was on the truck. At this point you have no choice but to continue. In end, this cost me $678.00 which is ludicrous, especially for items that can clearly be donated. On site visit for an estimate is inappropriate as I am sure this happens to everyone.....you find out the final price after it is on the truck....not cool. I have a bad back and 5 herniated discs and lifting stuff is painful. Carrying a plant down to my car in my condo was not optimal. However, I wanted to cancel my appt after finding out their minimum for my area was $109. The lady on the phone told me they would give me a discount and wouldn't be as expensive. Guy calls today to confirm appt, and thankfully I expressed my worry as it was one item (a 5 foot dried out yucca tree), and didn't want to pay the minimum of $109. He told me the minimum was now $148. Very different from what the site posted for my postal code. I cancelled. He called me back saying he didn't understand I had a discount and offered me a $50 discount on $148 (Pretty much the equivalent of what they first wanted to charge me.. lol I said no, and they then asked me what I would accept. This company is terribly irresponsible, awful customer support and simply negligent. I would never use this service in the future and have decided to make a point of dissuading anyone I know from ever using this companies service ever again. My neighbour called them in to remove an old cabinet. In the process of removing the cabinet they knocked over a drum of cooking oil they had in the truck. The oil spilled close to a gallon of putrid used cooking oil all over the streets in front of mine and several houses in the neighbourhood. The workers simply stared at the oil oozing out from the truck in confusion as it happened and then drove off. I have made several attempts to alert the company - who are headquartered in the west coast. At first they refused to talk to me about the issue because I was not their customer, since I was not the one who had called them in for the junk removal. Apparently they do not recognize anyone but their immediate customers complaints - even if their companies actions have led to property damage to other parties. After contacting my neighbours, we called in together to complain about the issue. The company then forwarded the complaint to a local manager who contacted me over text message, where I had sent in photos of the problem. They sent out what we thought was a cleaning team of two, who spent 3 minutes looking at the oil spill and then drove off. I alerted the manager to this and she responded with "they are investigating". Further attempts at communicating with this manager has been simply ignored by her. It's been close to a month now and the oil spill has not been cleaned up. I believe the company is hoping the rain will wash it away, but there have been several major rainfalls but the oil does not wash away. We have contacted the company again about the issue and are met with the same "we'll look into it". This is fair warning for anyone considering using this service. If there is damage to yours or your neighbours property during junk removal they will not take responsibility for it. HIGHLY DO NOT RECOMMEND USING THIS SERVICE. My group of neighbours are now looking into other actions we can take to force this company take responsibility for their negligent work and behaviour. read more

CBC Marketplace tip: Agree on payment or quote in writing before hiring them. I was told that removing a bed frame and an ottoman would cost around $115, but got upcharged $240 on the spot by the servicemen. In a way, my partner and I were forced to use this service as the condo property manager insisted on it. They arrived on the same day and were communicative about their ETA... but I don't appreciate the huge differences between quote and payment. I would suggest that any junk hauler include a photo-upload service with scaled objects and measurements to provide accurate quotes. When they arrive the movers eyeball the size your junk would take up in their truck and charge you right there. As a consumer you'd feel pressured to just agree to the price they presented after they arrived because you already asked them to come. I think this is at best, poor expectation management from a management standpoint, and at worst, questionable grifting. read more

Needed an old rear projection TV removed from my basement. I booked online and shortly after the crew call me and said they would be at my place in 10-15 minutes, which they were. Today Lucas and his friend from got junk came to pick up my kitchen table and a mirror drawer they were really great at their job and had great attitudes, Where the company falls short is on honesty on the phone when I explained what I had thoroughly I was quoted $115 which I found really inexpensive so of course I took it... I am incredibly disappointed. We called and they said they would be arriving around 1-3 pm and said the drivers would call and let us know. They quoted $250 or so for the two big items (a couch and a stair lift) plus the rest of the stuff we needed moved. They said the drivers would call around 12:30 to let us know of their arrival. At 1:30 they called saying they would be here at 2:30. 2:50 they show up and claim they'll "quote when it's on the truck" yeah, no, quote now was our obvious response. "well for just the couch and the stair lift 500. That's half a truck." (both items were not a half a truck combined) Needless to say we kept our money and sent them on their way. For a company charging that much the drivers quoted their wages at minimum wage when we inquired. She booked 2 gentleman Greg and Terell ( from the Pittsburgh PA area) to come out. They called me within minutes of setting up the appointment for same day seevice and were at my home within the hour. Terell and Greg were extremely professional, very pleasant to talk to. They worked perfectly together. They not only got rid of everything but they cleaned up the area, swept it and made sure I was staified and they did all this in a timely professional manner. As stated before 1800 GOT JUNK is not the cheapest, but the service was fast. Ryan and Trevor did a great job hauling my pile of dirt, garbage and pieces of concrete I had after a new garden reno and basement reno. Here are my concerns with the company that has little to do with Ryan and Trevor.Getting an estimate on the phone was difficult even the website doesn't have pricing. The pricing is upfront on a piece of paper when they arrive that lists how much it is for a whole truck, half-truck, quarter..etc. Now, since I had soil and concrete that pricing was on a different list. I can understand a different list for getting rid of concrete in the city because transfer stations do not take it. So the worker gives the estimate. For my job the estimate was a full truck load and a quarter. I was skeptical and it is basically who can estimate better and "full" is very subjective. One would think that a "full" truck is bottom to top-front to back. The truck brimming is how I interpret full. In the picture I uploaded, the job is just over half done and you can see that it is more like scattered all over the bottom of the bin. Hardly a "full" load. Once done they said it was just a "full" truck not a "full" and quarter, which also raised flags for me and I questioned if "overestimating" is a gimmick used by this company to make you feel like you are getting a good deal. The work was done fast within 45 minutes. Ryan and Trevor seemed friendly and happy-go-lucky. After the work was done, time for payment seemed a bit archaic as they had to imprint my credit card on the invoice. This left me feeling very uneasy. While 1-800-Got-Junk isn't exactly cheap, their pricing is transparent and worth it for the level of service they provide. They charge by the percentage of the truck you fill, and show you a chart with the prices and tell you how much of the truck your stuff will take up before they start. Labour, dump fees, and everything else are all included. I had to get rid of some stuff that couldn't be moved to a new place but was on a budget and they worked with me to get the price to what I could afford. Since a lot of the stuff I had was already out on the curb, they could lower the price a bit. The service was fantastic. The booking process was easy. I booked online a few days ahead of time, but they can often do last minute as well. They called about half an hour before the scheduled window and said they could arrive early if that was ok. The guys were friendly and fast, cleared absolutely everything, and took a huge amount of stress out of the process. I'll definitely use them again when I need them. read more

Great for the times when you just don't want to do even one more manual labour task at home. Way better than renting a truck, doing it yourself and then going to the dump. They have fantastic catchy marketing, and great customer follow up service to smooth the rough feedback, but when it comes to getting what you need done, they'll take advantage, and their charges are a rip off. My wife booked an appointment with Got Junk to remove a shed in our back yard that was completely broken down. The service was great but the price wasn't. It cost $200 to remove it. I was in a weird situation. I could have sold my furniture, but didn't have time. So I wanted to donate it, but couldn't get stuff moved. So I did some research online and found that these guys would donate anything they could. I was okay with that, except for the price. Firstly - it would be nice to find some sort of price schedule online (of course they have a neatly branded chart when they actually show up at your place, yet all I could find was the min. and max. prices). For anyone wondering, prices start at $106 + tax, but I assume that is for a couple garbage bags. If you want to move a couch you're pretty much at half full already and the prices jump fast (For a couch/loveseat and a mattress I was at $386 + tax). I told the guy there was no way I could do $400 so he called his manager and I ended up paying $240. At least that's a bonus (though it's still more than I would have liked to pay, I guess it was my own stupidity for not realizing how much it would cost). It was kind of disappointing to realize that for something I could be selling and making a profit from, I'm actually paying to have someone take it away. Oh well, at least it will be donated, right? Naaaat. The guys were quick and efficient, sure! But if that means stomping the legs off a couch, and completely smashing a bed frame then that's what they do. I guess that stuff won't be getting donated. Finally, they left wood chips and shards on the carpet from stomping the bed frame to pieces. To sum it up, don't expect anything to get donated.
