The two ladies are getting up there in age , so we thought the best way to see this city was by taking the trolley tour. The tour cost twenty dollars a person and lasts about one hour. Our guide was very informative about the history of this famous city. We drove by all the important historical homes and markers, while avoiding having to get in and out of the car , numerous times and having to do tons of walking. Parking can be an issue here. The city is also full of lots of hills. So this quick tour was right up our alley by saving us tons of walking and time while getting a more thorough understanding of this city. I highly recommend this tour for people trying to get the Galena experience without doing a ton of walking, searching for parking, and doing a bunch of in and out of cars.

The tour goes by all the tourist attractions - at a slow pace - through Main St and up the hill to the west of downtown. Then it crosses the river and goes east of downtown as well. There are several short stops - not to get off - but where the driver explains the significance of what we were seeing. You are right at the marina, there is a restaurant here which we did not have the ability to try and there's also a shop. We really didn't check out most of the ground since we were leaving the camper early in the morning and we're gone until into the evening The 50 amp power worked just fine, however, the 30 amp our surge protector said it had a fault so make sure you're checking that out before you plug-in Water and sewer were just fine There are certain spots that have cement pads, ours did not, it was just gravel and it does tend to get rainy here so make sure you bring a Mat and such so you don't track mud and gravel into your RV It looks like many people camp here for the season as there were a lot of folks who had structures attached to their units or had put up three seasons rooms. It also appears the same people return each year because everyone knew each other, so that was kind of fun to see. The drawbacks of this place include the train, which runs 24 seven and is very loud if you are in one of the first couple rows. If you're going to stay here, I would highly recommend you try to get something towards the back, closer to the water. We ended up running our very loud AC fan all night and that did help drown out some of the noise, but the vibration you can't fix You have easy access to Dubuque as well as Galena Illinois is just 15 minutes or so. We were able to get to both locations easily. $60 ish night

I chose Brierwreath because we were looking for a room that could accommodate three in a room. The Heirloom Suite has a queen bed and a day bed so that fit the bill. The decor is so charming in the house. It's like stepping into an antique shop. Joe, the owner, was extremely nice. He gave us a little history of the house and was kind enough to give us recommendations of where to dine in Galena. The breakfast he served was so yummy! I definitely was a member of the Clean Plate Club. The 24 hour refreshment hutch and fridge on the guest floor is great. And the fresh cookies were a treat! The location is only a short walk to Main Street, which is another plus. Will definitely be back on our next trip to Galena!

The owner (who took it over in April from his parents) was very friendly and helpful- not overbearing at all! Breakfast was good- we were able to pick between a couple options when he asked us upon checkin. Coffee was good & several juices on the table. On the bedroom level here was a mini fridge, coffee machine, and water machine for use. Also the bedrooms are more separate and since there are only 3guest rooms it was a nice private feel. The only two negatives that I found was I wished they had a surge protector next to the bed because I had to unplug the clock/radio since I prefer to keep my cell phone on the nightstand charging while I sleep (my husband had an extra outlet on his side to use); the other part is they put a lot of effort decorating... There was lots of vases and stuffed teddy bears on the ground which upon leaving I could not simply scan the floor that nothing was left. However the Best part of this place was the location! Excellent perfect location! We were able to walk to everything! When we drove to Iowa (15mins away) we passed a lot of b&b that were not so close which made us really appreciate this place!! I enjoyed camping at Blanding Landing over the Labor Day weekend. It was easy to make and pay for…read moreour reservation online; however, contacting them was more challenging. I wasn't sure if I was going to be able to check in before they closed and nobody answered the phone or returned my message. In the end, I decided to wing it and arrive late anyway. After all, I knew which campsite was assigned to me and I paid for it. Turns out that I did the right thing. In fact, even if you don't have a reservation, they have a procedure for accommodating you if you arrive late. There's a phone number to call to find out which sites are available and then you check in properly in the morning. There's an attendant who lives at the camp grounds as well as sheriffs and other security folks who make regular rounds. This made me feel extra safe. There are outhouse-like bathrooms as well as a proper bathhouse with showers. All of the toilets have toilet paper. Each camp site has electricity, a pump nearby for water and a fire-pit with grill. The grounds were well maintained with mowed lawns and healthy tree cover for shade. The sites were good for RVs and tent camping. Not all of the sites were good for hammock camping where the hammock is suspended between trees. I heard that there's a beach along the Mississippi River but I didn't see it myself. Instead, I saw a boat-launch area with a ramp into the water and a dock. There were also paved roads nearby that were nice for cycling. I saw a large playground for kids. The campgrounds are located about 10 miles from any town but getting there is gorgeous. The land is very hilly - so hilly that you wouldn't believe that it's Illinois. One day we drove 10 miles to Galena for breakfast and it was a very enjoyable excursion. We also drove to a vineyard and winery (Fer Ged Aboud It) which was also a great field trip. One of the only problems (and there's nothing the campsite can do about it) is that there are regular freight trains that zoom right by the campgrounds on a regular basis. They are very loud. So loud that you can't have conversation.
