This never happens- my 100 year old giant chimney cap comes flying off the house and lands in the yard in a wind storm, taking with it 10 lbs of cement that was keeping it in place. Looked up local chimney repair guys, read some reviews and called 1hr Chimney AAA Chimney. Guys was here in 15 minutes, went up to chimney, snapped some photos, gave an estimate and was back a few days later to do the repair. Looks decent - complete job, quick work, nice guys. Caveat Emptor!!! Called to get my "chimney furnace" clean because it was clogged with debris and the smoke originating from the water boiler and oil burner was escaping inside the house instead. Very dangerous predicament indeed because of the carbon monoxide poison. But in all seriousness, the case I have is that the chimney was completely clogged and the immediate resolution was to unclogged it!!! But the technician from 1 Hour chimney declared immediately that I am at risk! Understandably so, but I called the plumber and the Oil co. technician ahead of him and checked and both agreed to have the chimney cleaned and should take care of my problem. The chimney rep. angrily told me and the oil co. repairman who was still in my house that he will not even clean the clogged chimney even though that is the only thing I want him to do at the time. Instead, he was forceful in telling me that I will not be "in compliance" and that he will not be responsible if something happen to me. In other words, he was aiming to make me agree to do the bigger job which included putting stainless liner in the chimney flu before he agrees to clean the clogged chimney. His estimate for the job... a whopping $1800.00 price tag. This is the mentality plotted by these contractors, repairmen to scare you first about a job which may or may not be needed at the time. Instead of educating or give you options that you may consider doing in the future. They will force such idea to the homeowners only to profit from you. It left me with a bad taste... Great experience from start to finish. I have a 100 year-old home and needed a chimney liner. I have a gas hot-water heater and an oil furnace. I knew the job would be expensive but it was something that I could not neglect. Worried about getting a reputable company for the project, I got 4-5 estimates to compare services and prices. I also contacted a guy in NY who helped me understand what was needed and what to look out for when shopping for chimney work. 1Hour Chimney was not the cheapest estimate, but Besi and the workers were the best at explaining what was needed and how the work would be done. 1Hour Chimney checked all the boxes that the guy in NY advised about. They explained the double-T connection that my house required and answered every other question professionally and respectfully. Can I leave less than one star? Called these guys to come out and look at our chimney. They showed up hours after they told us they would. When they showed up, they said, "We spoke to your husband" and walked by me INTO MY HOUSE without masks, without telling me who they were or why they needed access to my house. They left my front door wide open and seemed confused when I asked them to speak to me rather than my husband. This was one of the most unprofessional, disrespectful experiences I've ever had with a contractor (and I literally have another crew here working on something right now). There is absolutely NO way I would trust these people to work on my home, considering the way I was ignored. I Called Tony for a 2nd opinion on a level 2 chimney inspection after the first inspector made us feel my family(including 2 small children) were not safe with the state of our chimney. Not only did he give a lower price, he gave me a crash course on chimney inspection. He walked me through the report step by step & explained things that NEEDED to be done as well as the reasoning behind them. This company is absolutely the best. They had the best price and everyone from the plumber to the realtor took their card. I had several estimates done when it came to having my chimney re-lined when my boiler was replaced. I had seen the Laurel and Hardy show that this industry puts on regularly. I fell for it the first time. It goes something like this, they take a look in the chimney, throw the emergency switch on the boiler and tell you that you and your children will die at any moment if you don't have immediate repairs. Then they light a match, note that you are getting a little bit of a draft, and that's why you haven't died yet. This is usually followed by a high estimate (with no guarantee that there will not be problems) so the cost is not fixed. There is also some discount if you do it immediately and pay cash. Not so with1 hour chimney. Tony the owner was completely professional. Gave a detailed estimate and guaranteed the price. When there was a problem, and there was, he personally came out to supervise the technicians, when they had to open the wall. He did not charge me extra and assured me the price was guaranteed. When they were finished, they cleaned everything up, and left the wall in the same condition they found it. I can only think that Cathleen C. (who gave a bad review without details) wrote it because she is married to one of the scoundrels who own those other companies that are busily ripping people off. This is a family owned business, they promptly returned calls and required no up front payment, other than the town permit, until the job was done. We had a gas furnace issue for 2-3 weeks where a chimney damper used to trip off every 2-3 days. We had couple of chimney companies come and analyze the issue and they came up with big proposals of changing chimney height and changing pipes just looking at the whole setup. We were fortunate to have called 1 Hour chimney company and Tony (Owner of the company) looked at it. He opened up the pipe and to our surprise it did have garbage from the roofing reconstruction (We just did the roofing earlier this year and those idiots were so careless).
