After getting some other opinions, we selected A-1 to do the repairs and install a new furnace liner and pipes. The A-1 team dispatched to do the work was wonderful. 2 years ago these guys did an inspection. They said the chimney was in good shape. I was toying with the idea of getting a high efficiency furnace in which case they recommended a liner. Got a new furnace so an inspection was needed. My oil vendor of 23 years and my furnace installer recommended them. They immediately said I needed a liner based on 2 years ago without noting that was only if I went high efficiency. They went up on the roof and looked down the chimney, came down, said I had all kinds of stuff going on, and that I needed a liner, Didn't actually do an inspection with one of those remote cameras as they had done the first time and as is recommended. I am very upset with this company. They came out originally for my furnace chimney to clean it. They then took all these pictures of my chimney to show me what a mess it was and how I needed to replace the liner. I would have appreciated if they had asked my permission to take all those pictures. I felt very pressured by them to say the least. I don't know if the work was as necessary as they say and they were the most expensive however I had them do it anyway. Then I got a call from the company do I want an inspection of my fireplace it is free. I told him I don't use it and he pushed and I said okay. The guy comes today and I told him I haven't used it in 5 years and he asked me why. He then asked me if I plan to sell my home. Neither of those questions were professional. I answered him anyway and told him my husband passed 5 years ago and haven't used since. He goes up on the roof comes back and tells me the fireplace chimney is in good shape. However, I need new gutters. He took pictures of my gutters which I didn't not give him permission to do. He went on my roof and out of his way to look at them. That was also unprofessional and intrusive. He showed me the pictures and I told him just that. He actually just kept going into how important it is for me to replace them and it will cost just for one side 1700!!! I told him no however, I was really upset about his behavior. I just spent a ton of money on something unforeseen already with the chimney. I called to log this complaint and was told that your technicians are advised to look for other work. read more

We were getting leaks during major rain storms and the ceiling leaked twice in about 6 months. With winter coming we wanted to alleviate that. I didn't check Yelp before going with this company, but I can see where the negatives on scheduling come from. I can't say if the job fixed the issue like they said it would until the next major rainstorm, so during hurricane season I'll update this review. I think the people who handle sales should only speak on the numbers, since I was told the job would fix a ponding issue on my lower roof and it did not. I'm also not sure if anyone actually came out to look at my roof before doing the job because I figure that would have been mentioned. I'll check the cameras and update this review. Bottom line, I hope the leaking goes away during hurricane season and that's the end of it or they honor the warranty. Again, everyone I spoke with was pleasant, but I can't help shake the feeling of getting gipped for some reason despite going back and forth for about a month. But I guess that's what lawyers and contracts and warranties are for. #shrug read more

Disappointed is an understatement. In the middle of closing on a house, a chimney inspection company canceled on us and we were forced to find another company fast. I called this company and explained the situation. A supervisor came on the phone and said given the situation, they would squeeze me in for the following day. I was very happy because this would keep us in the 10 day count to get inspections done. I asked to be sure if he positive if we would get the chimney inspection the following day because if they weren't 100% sure, I was going to continue calling companies. He said that wasn't necessary and he felt bad that another company had canceled and he assured me they would be there the following day. I made the appointment with the receptionist, who also assured me they would be there. The following day comes, they confirm the appointment and then a few hours later call me back (a dispatcher this time) to say they needed to reschedule. I explained the situation and Mike said he completely understood and would find a way to make it work and get some one there. He told me he'd call me back within an hour to verify but would make sure someone was there. An hour passes, no call.... An hour and 15 minutes pass, still nothing. So I called to check in and they told me they'd call back again. 20 minutes before they were supposed to arrive, they called me to cancel!! Barely an apology, no offer to come another time, no offer to come another day or even a discounted rate if they could still earn my business, just a "I'm sorry I do feel bad but there's nothing I can do". We had our chimney liner work and chimney masonry done. Technicians and workers are polite and professional, making sure as well that they clean up the area after the work is done. Good rating for now since they forgot to turn back on the water heater after they left that we ended up with no hot water for hours. BE WARNED!!!!!! If I could give 0 stars I would! We hired A1 through Region Oil as they were recommended. They came out and informed us that we needed a liner installed and some chimney repair work done. We received a quote of $3250. We paid upfront and the day they came out, none of the workers spoke English. My wife was home and asking questions and none of them could be answered. My wife had to pick up my daughter from school at 3 so she tried telling the crew, but all they could reply was "Yes". At 3pm my wife had to leave and had to ask them to leave the house. She also found one of the men wandering and looking around our back yard and what that had to do with the chimney, I have no idea. They finally finished for the day. 2 days later we are woken up, at 7am on a Saturday,  to the sounds of our carbon monoxide alarm going off and the police and fireman on the way. We had to evacuate the house. We have lived at our home for 18 years and have never had an issue until A1 came in. Obviously I called A1 and received a call back from Mike. I explained what happened and he said he wanted to find out what happened. I informed him that the workers he sent the other day did not speak English and we didn't want them back. We needed someone to look and explain the issue. Once everything was given the all clear we re-entered the house and Mike called back, I told him we had an appt and could not be home as he wanted to send someone. It was a Saturday and we had plans in place for weeks so we told him we would be back by 1pm. So what does Mike do? He is petty so he sends over 3 more workers that don't speak English, just to spite us, and had the nerve to tell me that it was my fault because we had plans those were the only people he could send. All this after he told me he has very few non - English speaking employees. Again! They could not explain one thing that happened or what the underlying issue was or what they were even going to be doing. In addition  to that A1 never sent us the invoice for the work when it was done. I had to call and ask. Once we received it , there was an additional charge that we were not informed of for a permit. I then received a sympathetic call from Sal, who claimed to be an owner. I spoke to him for 30-40 min about the issue and what happened and how it scared my children and my wife. He suggested that we should receive some money back for the headaches we were put through and basically said he didn't see any issue with us getting something back for what happened. 2 days later, I called Sal back and the entire mood changed. He explained that it wasn't up to him and that Mike, the unsympathetic person we dealt with earlier, would be making the decision. I am not holding my breath. Be aware. This company has ZERO customer service and it seems that they will try to sneak in charges here and there. Mike is not a stand up guy and Sal is a joke and a liar. I would stay away. There are much better companies out there. I will NOT be having anyone from A1 step in my house again. read more

I hired A1 Affordable to make my fireplace safe for fires. Prior to hiring them I had other companies come in to price the job for me. However I found the scope of work presented by A1 to be extremely thorough; their proposal was detailed and included pictures from their inspection of my chimney. I felt I was dealing with a professional company who would do right by me, thus my reason for selecting their company to perform the job. Their price was also competitive thereby making it a no-brainer choice. When it came time to start the work that's where things got a bit rocky. The technician was given misinformation concerning the job and so a second and third appointment was set-up to get the work done. Mr. Michael McDermott stepped-in to handle the initial hiccups. He was empathetic and aimed and succeeded at putting my concerns at ease. When technicians arrived a few days later, they removed debris, the old fireplace damper and cleaned the chimney from top to base with wire brushes. They then installed a 316 TI rated stainless steel smooth wall liner from top to base by code. A cement collar was installed along with a stainless steel top plate and collar flange kit. A high-temperatured cement smoke-tite was applied. Warranties were given on workmanship and materials. I truly believe I made the right choice with this company. Mr. McDermott checked in on the job after and even offered some useful pointers. I feel that this was a fair and honest company and that I received the best job I could've gotten. I will absolutely recommend A1 to others and intend on having them service the chimney every year. Thank you Mike and all the others who made my fireplace possible. read more

Got a carbon monoxide detector alarm and was recommended to go to A-1 for help. The next day they came and fixed the problem; a clogged chimney. In addition, they recommended work to ensure this would not happen again happen again; specifically to install three new roof vents. We did the work and I am happy to report PSE&G cleared us for carbon monoxide the next day. A-1 took a very stressful situation and helped our family to resolve quickly. Last year I hired A1 to inspect my chimney and install a chimney liner. I had a good experience as far as scheduling, updates on arrivals, customer service and I was satisfied with the work I received. Not long after the work was done I suspected my chimney started to leak in heavy rain conditions. There was damage from a past leak so it was difficult to tell but after close monitoring I was able to conclude that my chimney was in fact leaking as the damaged area started to grow. In the end of this past January I was finally able to call them back out. Upon inspection this time I was told I had flashing that was not installed properly and some cracking shingles including a hole in one and that I also needed to waterproof the brick. The day of my appointment there was a large snowstorm, so they were unable to do the job. So I called to the main office to reschedule on a Friday afternoon and I was told they would be coming Monday the 12th and confirmed my appointment with the main office over the phone. I was very happy with that because another snowstorm was scheduled for that week and the temperatures were set to be perfect for that day to do the waterproofing, which after much research is something that needs dry conditions and should not be done in temperatures below 40 degrees because of the materials used. Later in the evening I received a voicemail from the technician telling me I had to call the main office to confirm my appointment, which I had just done a few hours before. Fast forward to Monday and it's getting a little later in the day (usually I receive a call first thing telling me their arrival time) so I called the main office where I was told my appointment was never confirmed. There was another snow storm that week so again we had to reschedule. I did not feel comfortable having them come out with the amount of ice and snow on my roof and I made that very clear to the main office when I called as well as the fact of the temperature being in the 30s so I told them they can put it on the calendar but I would confirm the morning of. So again when I got the call we ended up pushing it back and again I stated it would be dependent on the conditions the day of because the predicted weather the snow and ice would not be melted and the temperatures were expected to be too low. On the day of the last appointment I did not receive a confirmation call and the workers just showed up at my door. I told them I was not comfortable with the amount of snow on my roof but they did not speak good English and said they were just going to check it out. They went ahead and did the work anyway. When they were done I asked about payment and they said they could not take my check but I would be contacted by the main office. Several days went by and still no invoice. I finally received a call asking for my payment and I had told them I never received my invoice or after photos. I was paying with a check and I suppose being it was close to the end of the month I was told not to mail it and a tech would come by to pick it up the next day. So I waited home all day and no one ever came. So I called the main office again and was told they will come the next day again. So again I had to wait home all day. I have been closely watching the leaking area because I know the waterproofing was done in the wrong temperate and conditions and in the last few days of the heavy rain we are having it is in fact leaking again. I am extremely disappointed in my service and my entire experience from the miscommunication, the lack of communication, and being pushed to do a job in the wrong conditions, the lack of respect regarding me not wanting them on my roof in the snow, and how taken advantage of I feel right now on top of the fact that my chimney is still leaking as if no work was ever done. I will no longer be recommending A1 construction to anyone and advise you to look elsewhere. read more

I'm writing this review because you read on a companys website how great a job they done for other people and you think you will receive this same service. A1 wad recommened to me by a close friend who previously had her chimney and liner repaired and since I needed the some for my house I used my friends recommendation. I dont know if the reason Im not receiving a response to my question from Sal is because I live in Jersey City and my friend live in Plainfield. But you would think it shouldn't matter where you live, you would respond to a new customer. This is not the case with this company and its only been 2 weeks since they completed the work (August 4, 2023). Reached out to A1 for a roof replacement / chimney liner. We talked pricing, a low end cost and a WORST CASE scenario cost. But somehow, someway, my roof was the once in a blue moon WORST, WORST CASE scenario and it would be an additional $2,300. So now my roof is already being ripped out and it is unsafe to continue on without agreeing to this additional work. What is the point of a WORST-CASE scenario quote if it actually isn't. They specialize in chimney's yet somehow the state of my chimney caught them by surprise. I give them 3 stars because they were quick and the workman ship appears solid. Receipt paid in full received via email. Charge on my credit card clearly showing the company name for the entirety of the invoice. On the following Monday, two men from the company showed up on my property unannounced and harassed my husband for not paying. Stating that they had called multiple times and we hadn't paid. Neither my husband or I had any record of calls or voicemails. Nothing on the invoice indicated pay in full upon receipt. Further, we signed no contract indicating we would do so. To do this FOUR BUSINESS DAYS AFTER COMPLETION is simply shocking. If you think I haven't paid a bill, pick up the phone, call me, leave a message. Don't make a scene on my property. read more

Knowing little about what was required, Sal and his team explained the reason for the new liner and what the installation entailed. They arrived at the date and time they had promised, the work was completed in a workmanlike manner and provided me pictures and explained what was done. After scheduling the inspection with the town, their representative stayed with us on site, as the inspector came 2 hours late. I just had my first encounter with this company this morning, and I really don't feel good about it. I have Region Oil, and they have a deal with this company to service chimneys, etc. so when I scheduled my furnace maintenance, they recommended this company for a cleaning. I scheduled my appointment for a Saturday afternoon, as that's when I would be home and available however, the next day, they called to try and reschedule my appointment for Friday morning, which I was unable to do, because I was at work. Later that same day, they called me again to reschedule - they want to come Saturday morning. I was able to re-arrange my schedule to be home this morning, so I told them fine, although it is an inconvenience. What is the point of making an appointment in the first place if the techs are only going to reschedule it to convenience them? Anyway, they get here this morning and everyone seems very friendly and professional, hence the three stars. What I don't feel good about is their "inspection " in which they told me I need to replace my entire system, and that it would not pass inspection, etc. Initially, they had me all panicked however, I had this system inspected when I bought this house two years ago, and my inspector pointed out one remedy needed for the system, which was made, but that it was otherwise fine. It doesn't make sense to me that a system that passed inspection two years prior would need to be completely replaced, after two years of normal use. The guys would not clean the system as it was, and wanted thousands of dollars for the work they quoted. Something was not clicking here, so I asked them to please put it back the way it was and that I could not afford the work they quoted, and needed another opinion. And that's how things were left. Again, I'm no expert, but the whole experience from beginning to end does not sit well with me. I would recommend proceeding with caution. read more

I had to have a stainless steel liner inserted into my chimney prior to having a new heater installed. I needed it in a hurry, and A-1 Affordable came out the next day - a Saturday - and completed the installation quickly and efficiently.
