As soon as you enter, you're faced with what amounts to organized chaos. The family-run business may seem to be completely asunder, but a few trips there and you get to know where everything is. If you can't find what you're looking for, just ask any of the staff. I once owned an old stove-top percolating coffee maker and the glass stopper at the top broke. Not knowing where to start looking for something like this, I went to Donovan's. Once I described the item, the only questions I was asked were "How many?" and "What colour?" Yeah, they've pretty much got everything.

But the store itself intrigued us; it's stocked not just with hardware but a huge selection of "stuff" for yard and home along with providing advice on everything from plumbing to screen repairs. It just has to be a really popular place for residents of Gananoque to shop, and since it dates back to 1872 and is operated by the fifth generation Donevan family we think that's definitely the case. Here is one example of many. Hock Shop Canada sells guitars that are real junk. The guitars they sell are overpriced junk full of covered damages such as cracks in the necks and bodies of the guitars, worn out guitars, warped and damaged guitars that have never been stored, maintained or looked after, lowest quality guitars made in China and the list is endless. You get the idea. When people off the street sell Hock Shop Canada their junk guitars, the guitar's defects are pointed out right away by Hock Shop Canada to them to command a rock bottom price to be paid for the guitar, the lowest garage sale type price for a parts guitar. After the junk guitar is bought for next to nothing, Hock Shop Canada gets right to work on the junk guitar to clean up and cheaply cover up the damages. Cracks in the guitar's wood can be filled in and touched up good enough to sell the guitar. Worn out frets can be polished and filed to look newer. Warped guitar necks can be adjusted to help cover up the defects. Broken electronics can be patched together to work long enough to sell the guitar, and on and on. After a guitar's damages and wear are cheaply covered up, the guitars are put on the store rack for top dollar, (with a humidifier in front of them to maintain the cheap cover up's), just under what the guitar would sell for new or what a perfect same model guitar would sell for on e bay. When the customer goes into Hock Shop Canada, they are told what great quality and value the guitars they sell are. Many customers off the street are not guitar experts. They are beginners in guitars and are looking for a first or second guitar to learn to play and practice with. Hock Shop Canada preys on these people and gives them a load of misrepresentation, telling them whatever it takes to make a sale. When the customer purchases a guitar from Hock Shop Canada, they are told they get a 30 day warranty, no cash refunds and exchange only. When the customer brings the guitar they purchased home, the cheaply covered up defects and damages soon appear. The covered up cracks in the guitar's neck and body appear due to the slightest change in humidity and temperature. The warps go back to their original state and on and on. The consumer soon realizes with the help of internet guitar sites or seeking out the advice of a guitar tech, they bought a misrepresented guitar that is only good as a wall hanging or firewood. When the consumer returns the guitar back to Hock Shop Canada, they are out of the over inflated price they paid for the junk guitar. Hock Shop Canada only gives their ripped off customers two options, Exchange for another piece of junk or given a worthless gift card that they can only get another worthless piece of junk with. The gift card has no value, because when the customer buys another junk guitar, the guitar has no resale value. The guitar can only be sold as a junk guitar or a parts guitar. If a customer paid $200.00 for a cracked guitar and if they are honest, they can only sell the guitar for what it really is, a cracked junk guitar for some parts or a wall hanging. They would be lucky to get $25.00 for it. One crooked store that sells misrepresented products, causes consumers to dislike the whole mall and never shop at the mall again.

Three and a half stars, if only I could…read more The Habitat for Humanity is a store that is easy to find something to purchase, and hard to walk out with nothing in your hands!! It's a bit like a thrift store with a little of everything, and a bit like a hardware store, with a selection of oilers, sinks, vanities, and kitchen cabinetry. I've signed up for their Facebook group page, and they post pictures when new items come in. This is a good way to lure people in! They have a lot of useful items at very good prices, and since it's resale, based on donations, they don't change tax. The staff and volunteers are knowledgeable and helpful. When they don't know the answers to your questions, they ask for assistance and get your answer! It's a large store, located on hwy 29 heading north out of town. Give yourself enough time to poke around through their stock. We've had success a couple of times finding tiles for home renovations but you have to have patience to go through the stock.

It's fairly big, and with those windows in front it's also bright! With an array of yarns to choose from hanging along the walls, there is plenty of inspiration here. This shop caters to knitters, crocheters, and spinners - with fibre and needles for all your needs! Spinning wheels too!! I can't wait to start - and finish, and wear! - the socks from yarn I purchased here! Open space in the centre of the shop provides comfy seating, so that you can try out your new purchases.
