I did the Spain/Andorra/Portugal 2026 trip. This was my 6th trip with 1000 Treks. As with the other trips, it was awesome! It was different than the other trips in that I would describe it as a road trip with friends. We met in Barcelona where we rented two vans. We started up in Andorra, traveled down through Spain, ZIPLINED from Spain into Portugal (!!), then drove up through Portugal to our final destination in Porto. Due to the road trip nature of this trip, we had a lot of flexibility in how we approached the itinerary. It was so jam-packed with places to see that it was almost overwhelming - in a good way! We saw castles, cathedrals, Basilicas, palaces, and gardens galore! We did too many things to list all of it here, but my favorites included exploring the underwater river, spending the night in a castle, exploring sea caves along the coast in a Zodiak speedboat, the cultural shows, ziplining across the Spain/Portugal border, hiking moorish castle grounds, exploring the villages & towns we passed through... As always, the people in the group were a lot of fun. I knew a few from previous trips & made new friends as well. There were three couples, and the others were a good mix of solo men & women. I'm guessing the ages ranged from 40s to 70s. I loved the diversity of this group. Eduardo (1000 Treks owner) did another amazing job of putting together an interesting, unique, affordable itinerary. I love how he arranges everything and all I have to do is show up at the designated meeting time each day. I also appreciate the flexibility. For example, if a planned activity falls outside of my comfort zone, I can skip it and do my own thing. I also commend Eduardo for how he manages conflict. Any trip of this magnitude (3+ weeks) is bound to produce a hiccup or two. Eduardo went above and beyond to make sure everyone was satisfied and taken care of. I just came back from a 12 day trip to beautiful Fiji! I love traveling and I've always wanted to share adventures and meaningful moments with the right group of people. Just returned from an unforgettable Scandinavia trip with 1000 Treks! Eduardo, our adventure lead, crafts the most ADVENTUROUS & THOUGHTFULLY designed itineraries. One of my favorites was the guided cave hike, which felt intimate and personalized, more of a 1-on-1 experience than a generic group tour. The same goes for the scenic treks in both the Sweden and Finland Laplands, biking through nature on e-bikes, alternating between hot saunas and icy plunges, visiting the Ice Hotel amongst other activities. These aren't your typical travel excursions, they're immersive, off-the-beaten-path moments that stick with you. It was a bit challenging at first (my body definitely felt it!), but I quickly adapted and came home stronger, more energized, and so fulfilled. I just got back from an amazing group trip to Fiji with 100 Treks. Honestly, my Fiji experience couldn't have been better. In our small group, everyone was incredibly welcoming and easy to be around. We hiked in the rain, swam under waterfalls, paddled across fast-moving rivers, crawled into a cannibal cave, soaked in the tropical forest beauty during optional rafting, ziplining, tubing, or other activity, we spent a day in the sun on a catamaran and snorkeled along tropical islands and sandbars. We picked up a few bruises and scratches, a sunburn, and countless unforgettable moments. Plus, we met so many warm and happy locals. Bula! I had a great time on this trip. We stayed in Phuket, but did a lot of different activities, which is why I like 1000 Treks trips. In addition to touring the city and going to a couple of local markets and shows, we went swimming, snorkeling, surfing, ziplining, ATV mud riding, visited beautiful islands and movie locations, ate lunch at a sea village built on stilts, fed and bathed elephants, pet tigers, saw a variety of monkeys, and of course enjoyed lots of great Thai food and hospitality. Everybody on the trip was nice and fun to be around. This was my fourth trip with 1000 treks, and I look forward to number 5. This review is based on the 2024 Japan trip with 1,000 Treks. I see glowing reviews from previous trips, and it's hard to understand how this trip went so wrong. It turns out there are some intrinsic weaknesses in how 1,000 Treks markets and delivers its trips, and when those weaknesses get triggered and exposed, there is little remedy to you as a customer. What went wrong on the 2024 Japan trip: 1. Transit: consistently disorganized, delayed, and stressful. See other reviews from this trip for the amazingly creative variety of ways that our transit went wrong. 2. Tour Guide: Apparently our local guide was primarily a translator and didn't know she was expected to provide any information on where we were going, what we were seeing, how long we would have at a site, etc. She was obviously overwhelmed and not equipped to deliver the itinerary we had been sold. Lots of misdirection and back-tracking, and no help from our 1,000 Treks Trip Leaders. 3. Trip Leaders: A basic level of communication and expectation management could have gone a long way to help us enjoy the vacation we had been sold. For example, a packing list or warning of icy trails could have made sure people packed the right footwear and equipment to prevent falls that sent two people to the hospital. Instead, we had both Eduardo and Leigh on the tour behaving as tourists and not-infrequently wandering off so that the group had to wait for THEM. Our so-called Trip Leaders also consistently secured themselves the first hotel rooms (even when the hotel ran out of rooms for the paying guests on the tour), claimed the best seats on excursions (whether bus, cablecar, or geisha tea event), and could not be bothered to count the guests or communicate before departure. 4. Hotels: Many guests who purchased the "upgraded" hotel package had issues ranging from missing reservations, substitutions of lower-rated hotels, dirty rooms, smoking rooms, and even shared beds instead of doubles. I personally experienced bizarre extortionary brinksmanship from the Japanese tour operator when two weeks into the trip, the front desk told me that the hotel was not allowed to check me in until Eduardo paid an excursion debt to the tour operator. The front desk attendant looked embarrassed and said she had never seen anything like it. That was when I finally decided to leave the tour early. So, what should prospective customers take away from this experience? 1. 1,000 Treks is a group travel bundler, not a tour company, so don't expect the typical benefits of booking a tour, like group leadership, communication, safety considerations, information about sites, or guidance at the sites. 2. The quality of a trip is entirely dependent on the local tour operator 1,000 Treks contracts with. In the case of the 2024 Japan trip, both Treks and the local operator were happy to take our bookings (and payments), but neither took responsibility for planning and delivering the itinerary, and they clearly were in disagreement with each other about it too. Neither was willing to step up and make it right. 3. If anything goes wrong, you have little remedy other than ending the trip. Constructive feedback and complaints were dismissed and minimized, and out of nine customers on my trip, three abandoned the tour early to do their own self-guided experience in Japan. 4. The owners are on vacation with you, and they tell you in advance that they are not to be treated like guides. If anything goes wrong, don't expect them to take responsibility or proactively help. A direct quote: "The [customers] who purposely stayed away from the negativity actually enjoyed the trip..." In summary, the quality of any 1,000 Treks trip seems to depend on the quality of the local operator, and you have no assurance of what quality you may get when you sign up. In the event that Eduardo and Leigh choose poorly, as seemed to be the case for our trip, they make minimal effort to remedy the matter and actively work to maximize their own experience over that of their customers. read more

for the Africa Trip 2025 This trip was out of this world started off with table top mountain and ending with chimpanzees running around. We also got to experience a night safari seeing jaguars and hyena. If your not into animals and remember that the challenge rating is a 4 meaning difficult than this trip was probably not for you. I have loved 1000 Treks for their active, great itineraries, enough that Africa was my 12th trip with them. While the itinerary was amazing, the trip fell short of expectations. This long review explains why this trip was a disappointment to me. Highlights of the trip: 1. Seeing African animals on safaris, like elephants, rhinos, giraffes, Cape buffalo, lions, and even a leopard and hyena. 2. Experiencing amazing gorilla and chimpanzee treks. 3. Viewing Victoria Falls from many angles, including Devil's Pool. In general: 1. Eduardo seemed detached from the group as a whole. 2. There was no initial group meeting to set expectations and introduce ourselves. There has always been one in the past. 3. We often didn't leave at the planned times because we had to wait for people. It was frustrating to be ready very early in the morning when others couldn't be bothered. 4. Closer attention to timing was needed. Often times we were running late to our next activity. Sometimes lunch had to be picked up at a convenience store due to lack of time. 5. At times, no regard was given as to whether everyone was present. One example: cloth gift bags were given at one hotel, each one made from a different material. Eduardo did not wait until everyone was present to pass them out. When I arrived at the designated time and place, everyone had already chosen their bags. 6. The trip's unstated theme was each person for themselves. South Africa: 1. We had a nice tour of the city which ran late. We had to walk a fair distance, winding through the busy V&A Waterfront Mall, to get to a boat to take us to Robben Island. Eduardo rushed ahead with no regard as to where the group was. We were spread out over a significant distance (at least ¼ mile) to keep the person in front and behind within sight to prevent losing anyone. When we got to the boat area, we were unsure where to go because Eduardo was nowhere to be seen. Paying more attention to timing could have alleviated this, and Eduardo's disregard for the group was frustrating, distressing, and disappointing. 2. The itinerary said we would "actually swim with the penguins" at Boulder's Beach. Wrong. Swimming was not allowed where the penguins were. After we left, Eduardo said they didn't swim with the penguins on their previous trip either. As recommended, I packed wet suit pieces, a mask and snorkel that took up a lot of room in my suitcase and weren't needed. 3. We were exposed to Apartheid at Robben Island and Soweto. There was no reason to spend an afternoon at the Apartheid Museum in Johannesburg. It would have been nice to see more of the city. Victoria Falls: 1. More information would have been helpful as we passed through immigration at the airport. The people in one line were asked what countries they were going to and got a multiple-entry visa. Three of us in a different line were not asked and got a single-entry visa. As a result, we later had to get another visa, wasting time and money. Eduardo said he didn't know. He was in the other line and could have told us to make sure we got the multiple-entry visa after he got his, but did not. 2. As we drove to the Gorge Swing, Eduardo announced that he was going first. This was unprofessional and several people were taken aback by this declaration. Flights to Rwanda: At one of the airports, I got stuck in a security line that stopped for almost 5 minutes. Everyone went ahead without me. Because people were frequently being left behind, after I found the group, I pulled Eduardo aside and said something. He said I had to stop blaming everyone and keep up. I was recovering from a broken leg, so I was not as fast as I usually am. However, I was doing a good job keeping up most of the time and often was not the last person. This callous statement hurt. Kibale: We were told we would be going to our next lodge before going on a swamp walk and cultural activities. Instead, we went to the swamp walk first. No explanation was given. We were not dressed for a muddy, wet walk. Rain gear and appropriate clothes and boots were in our suitcases. Some changed in the parking lot. My suitcase was on the bottom and inaccessible. They had rubber boots that we could wear, but they had a thin, non-supportive sole so I needed to wear my tennis shoes. Then it rained. I was soaked through including my undergarments. Then we continued on to the cultural activities. Two of us opted to stay in the jeep rather than walk down a muddy slope in the rain. We had to wait for an hour, soaking wet and freezing. There were two jeeps, so one took some of the group to the lodge, missing the cultural activities because of this poor planning. The next morning, I had to pack my wet clothes in my suitcase with no more hotel stops before going home. That's where they stayed for more than 48 hours. Last day: The chimpanzee trek was wonderful. We left 20 minutes late because we had to wait for people. That 20 minutes could have been used to clean up after the tr read more

I went to the Galapagos during Thanksgiving with Eduardo and Leigh's company. I was so looking forward to the islands and left disappointed. It was unorganized and my roommate issues were not completely addressed when brought up to their attention. Leigh still continued to assign us together on the same boat excursions even though there were 2 boats. But, they didn't care. These issues continued though the whole trip and could have been avoided. So, when there's a problem with their company, their response is to not come anymore on trips with them. Actually, this is a first time I received such a dismissive attitude from any business. Also, they subcontract local tour companies. In essence, I paid for two companies. I didn't get value paid and the added expense contributed to my dissatisfaction. I would NOT recommend them. ----- I have my constitutional rights to freedom of speech and the ability to express my opinion. While our itinerary was packed with fun touristy activities, we still had plenty of free time to explore the local areas. I took 1000 Treks (1T) Japan 2024 trip - nonstop problems from the beginning. I was told someone would be waiting there with a sign to pick me up no one was there. Eduardo (E) said I could take a taxi for 10,000 yen - it was 33,000 yen. The orientation meeting was delayed by 2 hours because "flights were delayed" (no flights were delayed) - the tour guide (TG) was late to pick people up. Leigh (L) said that this was a good vibes only trip & any complaints to make them to E, she was there for fun. They said this was their vacation, they would not be our tour guides. E asked the TG about when activities were booked. He collected our money & let someone else take care of the rest cutting corners with no initial test run. The company averaged $5,600/traveler for a 15-day trip. E said to get lots of cash because Japan has a big tipping culture - WRONG. When asked for a packing list before the trip, he said there was no list, because the weather was going to be "mild." E had firm meeting times to go from point A to point B but joked that those times were more for us so he could show up when he shows up. 1. The hotels were totally messed up. I paid for 4-star hotel upgrade & got it 21% of the days, had to pay extra for 2 beds & hotel taxes. 2. Last minute hotel changes - "the one we booked is now full" half of the people did not receive the onsens we were promised with no refund. Hotels were far below par - peeling wallpaper, stains on the floors, a smashed light fixture, worn & dusty woodwork. 3. "Included meals" were frequently missing. Luggage at the wrong hotel, lost luggage, luggage transport became our responsibility: wasting hours of vacation time, waiting on a taxi that never came, hauling it for blocks. Initial prep not started until AFTER we were supposed to leave adding 90 minutes in waiting. Lack of care - 4 people were injured during the trip - a slip & fall, one broken her foot, 2 slip & falls on an icy path - 1 hitting her head on a metal railing & the other possibly dislocating her shoulder. Frequently our leaders ran off & didn't wait for the clients. The TG knew nothing about where we were going. The 1st day she got lost 3 times trying to find the train station. We transferred to a bus & we were babysat by asinine TV game shows. E spoke with the TG about last minute changes, got us excited, then told us that it was not allowed by the Japanese government. Our clueless TG had to ask our bus driver whenever we asked her any questions. Ground transportation cost was not always included as promised. Mid-way through the trip, E asked that we add him as a friend on Facebook to track each other's locations - like he was figuring it out! E & L took the best spots for themselves, sometimes bumping paying clients. For bus rides, they reserved the front seat for themselves. One day, L told a senior (66-year-old) woman to move so L could sit there because of L's car sickness & hot flashes. I saw this as totally tone deaf & rude to the woman who already had gotten up early & made it to the seat & it was not one of their "reserved seats." This trip was one tour bus location after another - the places were generally jammed with other tourists - shoulder to shoulder. Things were not as described - bamboo forest was a few blocks deep - E apologized for taking us to such a "tourist trap." The Sake factory tour - photos on the wall showing the process, an area where we could try on Kimonos, get our picture taken & then to the sake store. The sumo wrestlers left town 2 days before we were supposed to see them. To see a castle customers had to RUN to get to the entrance before the cutoff & were there at 3:58 p.m. when it closed at 4 p.m. When E knew I was leaving the trip early, E expressed to me that this is not how his company is normally run & that the tour operator was extorting him. That does not make up for the total lack of leadership, organization, preparation, communication, guidance, care, rudeness, constant chaos & straight up lies. 1000 Treks = Self above Service. BUYER BEWARE. 5 out of 9 on our trip left early and I learned during our trip that 70% of the people on their Madagascar trip left early. I've been on two trips with 1000 Treks to Australia and just returned from a fantastic trip to Tahiti, Bora Bora, and Moorea. The experience was amazing and Leigh put together a fun trip for us Land people. What I love the most about this trip is not having to worry about planning the tour and activities for each day, it was all taken care of before we left for our trip, making it a very relaxing experience. I've enjoyed meeting new friends and catching up with old ones. Since traveling with 1000 treks I've had the opportunity to travel to places I never thought I could go, it's something that we should all do for ourselves, to enjoy life while we still can. I just returned from what should've been the trip of a lifetime to Japan with 1000 Treks (March-April 2024). I used this company based on their 5* reviews and a conversation with the group leader/owner. The group leaders hired a third party local "guide" to run the trip, but unfortunately, this company was totally incompetent. We experienced logistics issues everyday. They include: the hired "guide" often getting lost, not being familiar with Tokyo and most of the cities we visited, and therefore unable to provide any information about the history, purpose and architecture of the sites, sending my luggage to the wrong hotel and having to hire taxis to pick it up and then bring it on my own to the correct hotel, changing the originally assigned hotels often and usually to a downgraded hotel from the supposedly "upgraded package", mismanaging time resulting in having to miss an attraction altogether, being late leaving in the mornings, once over 2 hours, because the bus driver was sent to the wrong town to pick us up! This list could go on and on. The purpose of my review is to provide another perspective to those considering using 1000 Treks. I know that I'm not alone regarding my experience in Japan. Out of the 9 travelers to Japan, some took to IG to express their disappointment, others were openly verbal about these issues during the trip and 2 left the trip early. Based on their solid 5**, either something went terribly wrong with this "tour" or unhappy customers from previous trips have chosen not to voice their opinions. Hopefully, Eduardo and Leigh will learn to care more about their clients's satisfaction, well being and safety. I have been on many trips with 1000 Treks over the years and they never disappoint. All you have to do is have your passport & airline ticket and they take care of the rest. This includes hotels, transfers, transportation & tons of amazing excursions & city tours. For the super adventurous there are always extra excursions that can be added- from bungee jumping in Africa, Skydiving in Australia , Kayaking in the glaciers in Iceland, diving in Belize, Whitewater rafting in Croatia, snorkeling in Silfra on Continental Divide on Tectonic Plates and so much more... Leigh and Eduardo find local guides for each trip- that make the adventure even that much more authentic. They really care about you and having an awesome experience. Just got back from an Amazing trip to the Galapagos Islands. We had some amazing diving, with schools of hammerhead sharks, Galagapos sharks, reef sharks, tons of sea turtles, and manta rays and spotted eagle rays. Our two dive days at Gordon Rocks were in my top 10 dives ever and I have 700+ dives. It was wonderful to have all the transportation and tours arranged for us and to have help when moving from island to island. The tour operators were great and I loved the snorkel trips (swim with penguins, sharks, turtles, rays, marine iguanas and lots of fish), seeing the giant land tortoises and blue footed boobies (sea bird) up close. The 1000 Treks leaders (Eduardo and Leigh) were great about checking in to make sure everyone doing well and having a great time, helped organize group meals and made it easy for everyone to get to know one another. Made some great new friends and future dive buddies as well. I am signing up for a 1000 Treks tour to explore the Amazon next summer and bringing my girlfriend, should be another great trip! We had so much fun on our recent trip to Brazil with 1000 Treks! The trip has exceeded all our expectations. Every day we had a new adventure.
