When I came to Chapel Haven, my plan was to take the 2 year program and then leave for college. Well, by the end of those two years, I decided to stay in the area and continue receiving services. And now, after 6 years of living in this state, my physical and mental health are at the worst that they have ever been. Before Chapel Haven, I would have never dreamed of harming myself. About 4 years ago, I tried cutting my face. My weight is the highest it's ever been, and it only keeps getting higher. I have not finished college despite having gone to a prep school prior to attending the ASAT program. I feel inadequate about looking for a job. The only merit I can see in retrospect is the friendships I've formed. Oh, and the speech and language patgologist is nice too. I would advise against attending. In my eyes, Chapel Haven seems to define "independence" as "dependence on our services."

Look at the reviews for people who have been there 3, 4, 10 years. Why? It isn't free to do this - it's expensive. The point is to create independence, not create a line on the income statement. There were almost zero staff with experience with autism. Many different kinds of issues, including some that could be considered potentially dangerous. Autism does not need to be cured - it needs to be supported. There are those there with profound issues that may otherwise face institutionalization - they are staying at what could be about $82,000 per year (on our info sheet anyway). The classes were little more than YouTube shorts with no deliverables, taught by very inexperienced teachers. In short, this seemed to be a Haven for rich families who need to have their adults elsewhere. I would say that Anna K's review on this page sums up the experience nicely - horrible. Their Sanctuary Kitchen project bolsters another objective -- encouraging fairness and participation in the entrepreneurial aspects of food business. As I understand Sanctuary Kitchen, they offer fair wage employment opportunities in a food catering and grab and go type business to immigrants, refugees and asylum seekers. I believe these people are encouraged to help expose people to world cuisines that are meaningful to them. You can order food for pickup at designated times. You can also buy the food at the Farmers Markets. I recently visited the Sunday City Seed Market at Edgewood Park near the Westville neighborhood of New Haven. There were a variety of foods. I grabbed a tasty hunmus and a box of the donut style falafel. Both good. But I was really intrigued by the Iraqi food offerings because I haven't knowingly had Iraqi food. I bought Iraqi Carrot and Dill rice, Iraqi Lentil Soup and Iraqi Vegetable Curry Soup. Since I'm not experienced in Iraqi cuisine, I can't speak to authenticity or make a comparative quality analysis. The food seemed nutrient rich. I'm not sure if this a cultural thing or the preference of the individual cook, I think the food needed a bit more salt across the board. Also, in terms of texture, the rice was good, but the soups seemed a bit overcooked and had a softer texture than I would expect. I have had the great opportunity to meet some very nice, wonderful kids, as well as, some amazing tutors and hardworking NHR people. Some of the kids I have worked with have ranged from 3rd grade to 7th. We do various reading/literacy activities via workbooks, computer games, and of course in the books they choose to read. Some times they bring school work and they always bring great stories about their day or what they did over the weekend. There are always apples or tangerines, and string cheese available as healthy snacks for the kids. There is also an amazing amount of books there FOR FREE!! I get so nostalgic when I walk in there because I see all of my favorites from childhood lining the shelves: Nancy Drew, The Phantom Tollbooth, My Side of the Mountain, A Wrinkle in Time. The staff makes it so easy to jump in and tutor. They are very understanding, supportive, welcoming, and just phenomenal with all of the kids. They know them all so well. I find that overwhelmingly impressive because there are so many of them! Volunteer, donate, visit, or peruse here. It is a wonderful program and place here in New Haven.

The Creative Arts Workshop is the place to learn art, pick up a new technique, and meet other…read moreartists. My friend, who is an artist, introduced me to this place, and she says that CAW has a strong reputation in the art community. I have zero art background, but I have taken drawing and photography classes here. All the teachers were friendly, enthusiastic, and well-prepared. I felt like I learned a lot and that the teachers were encouraging of beginners. They have a huge variety of classes here including cool stuff I'd like to try like metal sculpture. There are both short workshops (good for artists who are already well-versed in a topic but want to pick up a new technique) and longer classes. The cost is a little pricey, but well-worth it in my opinion. They also have an exhibition space and show really nice artwork there. This past summer, my friend and I went to see a juried show there and it was very good. The Creative Arts Workshop is a fantastic place to learn art and join an artistic community. I can't recommend it highly enough.

For me, as a non-professional with some drawing experience, the class was engaging and informative - a delightful way to spend two afternoons. Being able to see and draw things from different perspectives makes drawing more fun and satisfying. As someone who ordinarily is more interested in life than buildings, I also realized the advantage of starting with boxier shapes, knowing that I can apply the same techniques to the animate world now that I have seen how they work. I highly recommend the workshop and other opportunities to work with Eric March.
