This afternoon's entertainment was Mrs. Doubt Fire the Musical Comedy. This wonderful adaptation of the smash hit movie staring the late great Robin Williams and Sally Field was a pure delight to see live on stage. Craig Allen Smith portrayal of Daniel Hilliard was, in my opinion genius. The comedic timing of Smith as Daniel was a breath of fresh air honoring Robin, right down to his impressions. The entire cast were outstanding in their own right. It made me laugh, smile and cry. This was my third show at the Shubert and I can't wait to see what else is coming this year. Good to come back and enjoy a show. Beautiful inside and staff, from those doing bag checks to those helping find seats, all we friendly. Hint: We opted to find parking and walked ten minutes. Saved 10+ minutes of frustration waiting to get in and out elevator / garage. And the we were wanted to be for shopping /food. We sat in the Mezzanine and had a good view. My grandmother and I went to see the Temptations on Broadway. The Broadway musical tells the story of the iconic Motown group, The Temptations. The show chronicles their journey from the streets of Detroit to the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, including their rise to fame, challenges, and the personal conflicts that threatened to tear them apart. It covers their formation, collaboration with Berry Gordy and Smokey Robinson, their string of hit songs, and their internal struggles due to fame, drugs, and personality clashes. The show also connects their story to the social and political landscape of the time, including the civil rights movement and the Vietnam War era. What a great show!! The dances were fantastic, and the whole show immersed you in a fascinating story of the Temptations. I can see why this Broadway show received so many awards and recognitions. I had front row seats to see Marlon Wayans do his thing (and by front row, I mean my knees were basically co-starring in the show). There was no legroom. I'm 5'10, & it felt like I was trying to fold myself into a carry-on bag. The theater has that charming, nostalgic vibe like stepping into a time machine. Right back to an era when people were apparently 4'11 and had 0 personal space. The seats? Think vintage airplane: cramped, creaky, & not built for modern-sized humans. If you're tall, prepare to get cozy w/ your own knees or the stage. That said, the staff were absolute gems. Super friendly & helpful (which helped balance out the "I might need a chiropractor after this" situation). I recently checked online to buy two tickets for a show at the Shubert Theater in New Haven. The seats I selected were $127. When I went to complete the purchase, I noticed that there was a $20 fee per ticket. What I also noticed was what was not mentioned; that there is no fee if tickets are purchased at the box office. I can understand a per order fee for an online purchase, and I wouldn't have given a second thought to a reasonable fee of, say, $5-$10, which would save me the trouble of driving the 15 minutes to the theater and parking. But $40 ($20 charge per ticket - 20%) is simply egregious. Telecharge only charges a fee of $16.50 per ticket for Broadway shows. read more

Went to see a wonderful performance of Les Miserables on 6/3/2026. Front door greeters were polite and efficient, ushers the same, and concessions friendly and quick. The control room staff are another story. It's 2026, I am not surprised when my fellow patrons turn on their phone screens, flash their lights or have their phones ring - that's inconsiderate but not malicious. But to have staff - staff I'm essentially paying with my ticket - to have them yelling and laughing to the point they have to be asked to quiet down by their fellow employees? Inexcusable. I will reconsider future purchases at this venue based on their behavior tonight, truly deplorable. read more

First time coming here for the Nutcracker ballet. The theater has a smaller, intimate layout, with orchestra, mezzanine and a few side balcony lower level seats. We sat in the orchestra/floor area and were able to see everything perfectly (minus a few guest obstructions) There are two bar areas set up upon walking inside, with will call at the left with a beautiful staircase that leads to the upper seating areas. TRAFFIC!!! The street is made for traffic, not parked trucks. We went to see "A Beautiful Noise: The Neil Diamond Musical" at the Shubert Theater and College street was blocked with trucks on the theater side making it difficult for both pedestrian and vehicular traffic. I now it was the last performance so they decided to leave the damn trucks in the street for quick loading entirely blocking one lane of traffic. It's god damn difficult for cars with normal lanes open, but to close one down was UNCONSCIONABLE. read more

We've come to the Shubert since I was a child loving ballet and seeing the nutcracker for the first time there before Christmas. I brought my own daughters years later, and they loved it too. We now have visited for many a performance be it comedy or musicals, or plays or concerts. The seat views are great, staff good too. The bathroom and drink lines can get crowded as does the next door parking garage so plan ahead and come early. Prices are reasonable seats more comfortable than other older theaters. read more

We attended a special graduation here recently. Big theatre with a balcony level overhead. Kinda a little old but I'm sure there is some wonderful history here. It was nice that they were able to accommodate families to attend the graduation festivities. read more

Very nice, modern theater. Impossibly slow getting in, up & to the seats, almost painfully slow..when you arrive up the stairs to the Mezzanine, instead of entering the path to your seats, you must loop around the hallway to wait in a very long line for the ushers..not a bad seat in the house, best to avoid the seats left & right furthest from center though if given the choice. We were MezzL row K seat 9 & it was perfect, but a bit closer & I would have been able to see the expressions a bit better. Parking garages are plentiful, coming out of the Crown Street garage driveway, you are met with traffic stopped for pedestrians crossing over to the theater, and in front of you to actually leave the garage. So in the future, I would park at a further garage & enjoy a post show stroll. Downtown New Haven is lovely, plenty of places to grab coffee/tea or a bite. We drove to NH to see Come From Away, and it was a wonderful experience all around read more

I enjoyed my visit at the Shubert Theatre. The staff was very friendly. I went to the theatre to watch Alicia Keys "Hells Kitchen" The play was very good. I enjoyed the play. Ok, here's the negative side of the Theatre there is not an accessible bathroom. And unfortunately the customer bathroom was located upstairs. I use a motorize scooter to get around. I can't walk without assistance and I definitely wasn't going to try the steps to the non accessible bathroom. read more

The Shubert Theater is such a charming venue with rich history and sits in the perfect spot downtown. Seriously, the Crown Street parking garage is right next door and there are some of the best restaurants in the state just steps away. They've always got a variety of shows -- not just theater performances. Check out their broadway series, orchestra events, and more. STAFF: Everyone is friendly and helpful. Bar tenders are great and move quickly, although there's never been a wait with 3 bars. You can expect quick assistance to your seats with a (masked) smile! VENUE: Lobby has restrooms on both floors and a lounge to grab a drink and snack before the show. Inside, the seating is intimate which means it's not hard to get a spot with a good view. When buying tickets I suggest grabbing the orchestra seats. Balcony has a pretty steep rake. Not Chichen-Itza-Mayan-Ruins steep, but enough to remind you to be careful getting to your seat. I appreciate the safety protocols of vaccine or negative test status as well as masking. read more

This wonderful historic theatre has been closed to public audiences since the spring of 2020 when the COVID pandemic forced the closure of preforming arts venues around the state and the country. By October 2020 as things were slowly reopening in CT with capacity limits and social distancing requirements the Shubert introduced new virtual performances including the Next Stop New Haven at home Late Night Series which I participated in. Purchase of a ticket included a link to the show and a party box that you pick up at the theatre. The party box is filled with delicious goodies ranging from appetizers to adult beverages and desserts from several New Haven restaurants and businesses who partnered with the Shubert to provide the food and drinks. The most recent Next Stop at home event had performances by 3 Broadway rising stars and a stand-up comedy show from Vinnie Penn. We enjoyed the evening of entertainment and will plan to attend others in the future. Better yet, We hope to be back to the theatre in person real soon. read more

What a great venue to see a show. I have seen many here and there is not a bad seat in the house. Parking is near by at the crown garage. Just a short walk to the entrance. The staff is friendly and mostly volunteers. The seats are comfortable and not as tight as New York theaters. The theater is well kept and looks beautiful. My daughter and I were gifted tickets to the play Clue, in the balcony of the Shubert Theatre for her birthday. Unbeknownst to the gifter, my daughter is afraid of heights. She did her best to keep calm but ultimately had a panic attack. The floor manager did not hesitate to call for help from her manager and get us to a private safe location for my daughter to catch her breathe and take a seat to calm down. Then another manager, Katie B came checked on my daughter and got us some waters and quickly relocated us. The theatre was about sold out and didn't have seats together on the floor so she placed us in an unoccupied ADA suite which had us about 6th row from the stage! My daughter felt so safe and special and couldn't stop smiling the rest of the play! Not to mention the play is hilarious! Thank you so much to the amazing staff at the Shubert Theatre's. I visited the Shubert Theater for the first time to see Mystery Science Theatre 3000 live. The show was so enjoyable!! I thought the ticket prices were high ($48/each) considering we were way up in the balcony. There were lots of open seats as well. The theater seems well maintained, but doesn't offer much in terms of leg room. I saw a few upcoming shows that peaked my interest, but ticket prices will determine whether I attend or not. So far, they seem too high for shows that I could see for less money at the Calvin Theatre in Northampton, for example. It's also hard to compete with College Street Music Hall, but at least this is another venue option for entertainment. read more

I think the Shubert is a great theater with a wide variety of show and a convenient location in CT (at least for me it is). It's also surrounded by a TON of restaurants, so you're spoiled for choice when it comes to having a meal before or after the show. One thing I really like is the fact the Shubert let's you see the entire seating chart and pick your seat when booking a show online. This may not sound like anything out of the ordinary but a few other theaters in CT only let you pick sections and then they give you random seats and there's no way to tell if there are better seats without starting over. The Shubert does NOT do that to you. I've been here twice so far and what I love most about the Shubert is how small it is, which means a lot of the seats are relatively close to the stage and you have a great view. The Mezzanine overhangs the Orchestra at Row H, so you start off only being about 8 rows back. Even the back row of the Mezzanine isn't too far. I believe the Balcony starts a couple of rows further back than the start of the Mezzanine, so still a good distance but I haven't sat up there. The seats are comfortable. I'm 5'6'' and both times I went (Mezzanine) my knees did NOT touch the seat in front of me. Given how tiny some theater's seats can be, that's a good thing. When you first walk in, there are 2 little bars - one in plain view and one behind the stairs. When you go up a level, there's a huge bar with a lot of seating. There's also an outdoor patio area with more seating. Entrance to the Mezzanine is another level up from there and it has a tiny bar. Bathrooms on every level. Although, I haven't sat in the Balcony, so can't speak for bars or bathrooms up there. We'll definitely be back. Love this place :-) read more

What a gem for New Haven! This historic theater (100 years and counting) retains much of its charming interior, from the private boxes and gigantic columns flanking the stage, to the beautiful lobby. We saw a Saturday matineé and experienced none of the traffic or parking issues reported by other reviewers. Other than the I-95 bridge that's been under construction for the past 50 years or so... (exaggeration, maybe!) There was event parking in the garage next door for a super reasonable $8. We found the ushers warm and inviting, and seats to be comfy with a good view of the stage and great sound. The show, Irving Berlin's White Christmas, started on time, the production (and casting!) exceeded my expectations. It was in all ways comparable to a Broadway show. A look back at the amazing performers (Julie Andrews, Sidney Poitier, etc) who have graced the Shubert stage confirms that it is truly a legendary theater! read more

If you want to grab a Broadway show and not head to Broadway, this is the place. The tickets are pretty much what you'd expect to pay in the city at one of the discounted booths, but it's a good show. As season subscribers, I love coming here. Sure, it's pricey, but saves a train ride in. They recently added free parking (with vouchers) for subscribers which is awesome. I always felt like for the price we are paying, the parking fee was a little nuts (even though it's not run by them). In any event, maybe people complained, maybe it was the cosmos sending freebies, but I applaud them for making that "perk" available. Folks: This is mostly musicals, so if you are looking for plays, you won't find them here. This is where national tour musicals end up coming. Good stuff. read more

If you go to the Shubert arrive an hour early!!! Not 30 minutes or 45. -shoot for a whole HOUR! We spent good money ($560) for 5 of us to see a 1:00 pm Sunday show. The traffic was so bad on Chapel. Just horrible. Two cars elected to disrupt the flow by performing 3 point turns to reverse their direction! Not one car but two! Wish some police had been there!! The pace through the adjacent garage was poor. We got locked out of the show! We dropped out kids off on the street and told them to sprint!!! We watched the first 20 minute in the lobby on a tv screen. But you could not hear the music from that screen. Some technician stood and told us the story line. They said they started the performance at 1:09. Do not be late! I wish I could say it was worth the $560 that we paid. I was shocked at how poor the sound was. I was orchestra row M ($108) and thought I was going deaf! The seats are tight. read more

Shubert Theater is part of a New Haven history. It has been kept to look very much it may of looked many years ago. Ive gone here twice for events. Once for Demetri Martin and once for Daniel Tiger live. This is a great location for a comedian (close and personal) not so good for a live show. The stage is small and it limits what a live show can do. The chairs are outdated and not very comfortable. They remind me of 80s movie chairs. Also concessions are expensive. More than a movie theater. The ticket prices have to enough to not charge so much on concession pricing. I will go here again but with comedy shows only. read more

After watching a show here in this theater, I feel like I would be more inclined to drive all the way to Connecticut versus watching another one in NYC! The people here are more friendly, it's clean, there are even activities to do while you wait for the show to start like playing shuffleboard and enjoying some cocktails out on their terrace! Heck, there's even a $2.00 raffle you can enter here. We watched Dirty Dancing and now I can't stop listening to the soundtrack and it was amazing I wish we could watch it again. We had orchestra seats and I know there are two levels above so I'm not sure how the view is up there. We were fortunate to have seats at the end of the row because the seats are very tight so you are snug here. We arrived an hour before the show but we got some snacks and we were able to charge our phone at the charging station. I was very happy that our bartender filled our wine cup to the brim! It's served in a to-go container with a lid so you can easily bring it into the theater with you. I bought a cup of popcorn for only $3 as well as the candy you could purchase was only $3, even cheaper than a movie theater and bigger than what you would buy from the grocery store! The popcorn didn't have any butter but it was salted so it still tasted good. We want to come back for the showing of Motown! We parked in the lot adjacent to the theater and it we were allowed to pre-pay for $8. We left our car there while we grabbed a bite to eat after the show and went to the Cushing Center (.5 mile walk away) so it was worth the price for the amount of time we left our car there for. One thing that I was sad that we didn't get to do was that the Shubert theater has a one hour free tour every First Wednesday and Saturday of the month. I would have loved to learn the history about this great venue. It was truly such a great experience!!! read more

The Shubert is old and the acoustics are not the best. The seats are small and not especially comfortable and it gets damn crowded, noisy and hot at times. However it is a New Haven landmark and a great place to see extremely talented performers and musicians and some absolutely stunning and entertaining shows. Despite it's faults the Shubert is still a fantastic place to see a show and the performances I have seen there have all been memorable experiences. read more

The Shubert used to be the "proving ground" for Broadway plays from the early 20th century until the 1970's. I have seen many plays here and the experiance has always been wonderful. The stage crew is so efficient and seamless that I feel like I am actually on Broadway. The Shubert is a true New Haven gem and should be experienced in person. Highly recommended. read more

I love the Shubert! As a born-and-raised New Havener, I've seen more shows here than I can recall. Most recently, I went with my father to see Elf. The chairs at the Shubert are roomy and comfortable, although they could probably use some refurbishing. I always forget how small the Shubert is; there really isn't a bad seat in the house and you always have a good view of the stage. They do a good job of getting shows that fit everyone's tastes and ticket pricing is usually pretty competitive with other theaters. Parking can be difficult as e-v-e-r-y-o-n-e parks in the College St garage (meaning it can take a while to find a spot and even longer to exit), so I would suggest going for the garage down the street or even trying to find a spot near the Green. Lots of dining options within a block or two, so it's easy to grab a bite pre- or post-show. read more

It's hard to complain about a theatre that has such a strong place in Broadway lore and legend. But, even though they import the first class road companies of popular tours, it's difficult to enjoy them. The seats are suitable for people who are the size of fifth graders - and the rows are impossibly close together. The acoustics are not terrific, and hearing dialogue can be a real problem - though music, for some reason, is more accessible. But, still, it's the Shubert, after all. And that's saying quite a lot. Even with all the inconveniences (did I mention mile long longs at the rest rooms?), we still go here and have a good time. And it is a good place to catch shows you kept meaning to see in the city but just never got around to catching. read more

Went last night (11/2) to see John Pinnette. I can't believe people put themselves through the ordeal of seeing a show here. Got to the corner of Chapel and Crown a full 90 mins before the show ... to a WALL of cars and pedestrians swarming the area. It took us so damn long to get near and then into the parking garage ... by the time we inched, and inched, and inched in, paid the parking fee, got our ticket, then inched up to the 5th floor, found a spot, then ran down the stairs, nearly falling over the knocked out homeless man (and his shopping cart) who was totally oblivious to people coming down around him, we made it into the lobby. ANOTHER sea of people -- it was HEAVING with people, clogging the stairwells, the TINY elevator (whichheld about 5 people at a time ... big freakin help). Didn't make it to our seats up in the B section until 5 mins before the show ... sweating (did I say it was HOT in there?!). The upper balcony area is SCARY. VERY steep and the seats are ridiculously tiny .. there is NO space on either side of you (think of a middle seat in coach on a discount airline) ... and even less legroom. Your knees are actually touching the shoulders of the people in front of you. The show was great, but this place is so uncomfortable .. it was torture sitting there for almost 2 hrs. They also kept letting latecomers in ... a full 30 mins into the show ... the ushers shining their obnoxious flashlights down the row so the fools could slide down the row into their seats. Then when the show was over, it was mass clogging again out to the front ... mobs of people waiting to go up the 2 TINY elevators into the parking garage (Max Capacity:8) and then the BEST part happened once we got to our car. We joined the line in the garage at 10:12 ..and barely inched along ... we did not leave that damn garage until 11:05. Then inched along for another good 15 minutes thru the 1-way streets and traffic lights every 5 feet to the NH connector along with everyone else and the drunks weaving around between all the cars on foot. Almost a full hour ... just to get out of that garage. This was one of the most miserable nights out I have had in a long, long time ... I will never put myself through it again. I can't believe anyone would do this more than once. .. or maybe I;m just not a "theater person" ! Buh-Bye Shubert. read more

Took my grandmother to see Kinky Boots at the Shubert. It's a small theater so it seems you can't really get a horrible seat. We had 2nd row mezzanine center so we had an excellent view of the stage. The location is pretty easy to get to but if you park next to the the theater - go for drinks after the show b/c it takes a long time to get out of there. We had dinner at a restaurant close by the validated in the Crown St Garage so we didn't have to pay but I think the fee was only $12. read more

The Shubert is a really nice place to see live music or theater. Right in downtown New Haven, it's pretty convenient to get to, and it brings in a lot of great shows and acts. I stopped in this month to see In The Heights with my mom, and we had a wonderful time. The show itself was fantastic, and I think it was such a great experience at least partially because of the Shubert. This was my second time over the last year seeing a show at the Shubert - I saw Jeff Mangum in January, and the Shubert was the perfect place to hold that concert. There are enough seats for more popular acts, but the classic feel of the theater helps the performance still feel intimate. The seats are that old theater crushed velvet type, a little cramped, but not too bad. Drinks are expensive, but that's to be expected for theater prices. The entire theater is pretty clean - while the line for the bathroom can get long during intermission, it at least stays clean inside. Parking can be a pain. If you can't find street parking, or if you're there while street parking is still at a one-hour limit, you'll end up in the parking garage. At least the last time we went, it was $8, but when my boyfriend and I went to see Jeff Mangum, the sign said $8, but they charged more once we got inside the garage. There's a terrible line to get into the garage, and if you leave right after the show, it's awful, so my mom and I grabbed something to eat before attempting to leave the garage. Tickets for some shows can get expensive, but sometimes you can catch deals. For example, I paid half price for my In The Heights tickets through a Black Friday/Christmas special. read more
