I really enjoyed my time in this spot. It has that earthy shabby chic style to it but a lot brighter then say the likes of Lucky 7. The open fire gives it a lovely feel and a nice peaty smell to the air. Staff are friendly and uber chilled. Soundtrack is trip hop to hip hop to Scandinavian experimental dance. Nice selection of beers on tap and good special offers. Great mix of folks and a lot of single people just reading their paper over a coffee or pint. I got the hummus and it was yum, with a hint of sweetness to it. The poached pears in ice-cream was also delicious. Yet another great Glaswegian spot! I just want to mimic the concept and bring it back home!

    Sunday Jazz

The 78 has the best contemporary jazz I have found in town. So, if you like jazz this is the place to be on Sunday. The down side is, you can definitely tell this is a college joint on that night as well...Not that there is anything wrong with that, just not what I was hoping for when it comes to the best jazz in town. I don't recommend you order a cocktail here, the bartender I had was not exactly knowledgable. Oh and they have absolutely no London Dry gin, at least that was what I was told. The gin and soda I ended up with was weak sauce with a chunk of unsqueezed lime thrown in. The up-side is The 78 has an excellent beer selection, so stick to the beer! I cannot comment on the food because I did not have anything. This place would not be my 'go-to' anyway since I am a carnivore, so I will leave that for the vegetarians to decide. In summary go here for good live music. Some regulars were telling me about other great music throughout the week. Drink the beer and you should be good to go!

I am so full of food that my belly hurts and I need to lie on the couch for a while, but in a warm and cosy Christmas Day kind of way and it's all thanks to an evening of glorious food at The 78. Tonight was their weekly Dutchy Pot event, where there's a set menu of cheap and comforting food, full of goodness and entirely vegan. On the menu tonight was kale, spinach and coconut soup (£2) which was absolutely delicious, followed by Jamaican bean stew with quinoa (£5), with sides of chunky chips or flatbread (£2) and some gorgeous ginger and chocolate cake for dessert (£2). The staff were relaxed and friendly and added to the pleasant experience where the atmosphere was warm and welcoming, with dim lighting, old records and comfy armchairs that wouldn't look out of place in your own living room.

As a meat eater, I've never understood why some folk automatically ignore vegan food without even trying it. Good food is good food regardless of what's in it, and I can definitely do without meat every now and again. And on the strength of this visit everyone should give this place a go, for great food that is seriously good value. For a start, it's a really nice place to sit for a pint. Full of nice unmatched chairs and tables, great music (Pavement!), and a kind of old pub feel that doesn't feel manufactured it definitely is a place you could spend a few hours in - the beers on tap and bottle are also pretty great. I would say that some of the doors in don't shut properly, so you may want to avoid sitting in front of them on a cold windy day. The food! For the price you're paying (£11-odd each for four folk sharing a starter, a main and dessert each and a couple of drinks) was seriously good. The nachos starter were fantastic, and had dark chocolate in them which really added to the flavour. I had the falafel burger, which tasted as good as any meat burger I've had in Glasgow (this is a special, so it may not be on all the time) and the chilli fries were brilliant - proper potato wedge style chips that were cooked perfectly. Dessert was a chocolate and orange tort. This was great, but could have been a wee bit smaller, at the end I was eating big claggy bits of tort. I had always fancied coming here, as I really like its sister bars. This could be the pick of the bunch though, especially as far as the food goes. Go and enjoy!

Yummy vegan food! We have been wanting to come here for a while and now that were here we re glad we finally made it! Planing out next trip back! So IMPORTANT info on Thursday nights they have this set menu like thing which at first we were bummed about bc we wanted to try the vegan burgers. But alas we weren't able. The Dutchy Pot thur night was great though!!! We loved it! Great selection of beers and drinks! My husband and I aren't vegan but were pollo-pescatarian s and I'm lactose intolerant (I know we limit our lives! Haha) so it was great being able to eat the cheese and sour cream tonight and not have to worry especially in this country of cream and bacon this Resturant is my new haven ! Also did I mention it's cheap ! Great prices!

I'm tempted to give 4 stars because being a vegan in a vegan restaurant giving 5 stars seems a bit obvious, but if there's been any downfall for me in any of Glasgow's vegan places it's usually either been the service, or the thump thump vibration of music from downstairs coming through the floor, and neither of them applied today, so I'm sticking with 5. I'm sure if I'd ordered a special from the menu it would have been a no-brainer, but I didn't - I went for something I've ordered often, the tempeh, refried beans, and cheese quesadillas with chips, because three of my favourite foods are chips, cheese, and tempeh. The chips were alright, not my favourite chips in Glasgow, but nice enough and their mayo is amazing. Also, they don't charge extra for the mayo, and most places do, so I see this as a huge plus point. Quesadillas were good, but they put a salsa on top which had a bit of a bitter edge I didn't really like. The food arrived quickly, plates were cleared quickly after we'd finished eating, and our order was taken at the table quickly (although we had already ordered at the bar when we'd ordered our drinks). As for the toilets, well it's quite a studenty place so I suppose expectations shouldn't really be high, but since I'm writing a review and it's my job to be picky, and I like a nice bathroom - one toilet was out of order, one had the roll sitting to the side rather than in the holder, and one had loads of toilet paper sitting in it that it looked blocked. They seem to paint over the graffiti, but I quite liked that actually, sometimes you'd find some crackers as you sat reading on the toilet. However, good hand drier!

Delicious food, nice atmosphere. Helpful staff- my toddler spent much time trying to encourage her into interaction ("peek-a-boo" "hello" wave wave) but she resisted and maintained her distance, which was neither good or bad, just how it was. She provided some paper for drawing (My small person was threatening to draw on the menu). Lots of interesting posters. Some entertaining toilet graffiti. Disabled and baby changing facilities :)

A few Yelpers have been meeting for brunch and this past weekend it was the turn of The 78 to do the hosting. Important note: 'The 78' is in the Kelvingrove area, '78' was a restaurant on St. Vincent Street (now something else). Not that anyone made that mistake... (no, it wasn't me!) I've seen good reviews of this place and so was keen to see what was on the menu. I tend not to select vegan eateries because I enjoy being a carnivore (no snobbery or anything, I'd just usually want something meat based) so having the brunch here helped push me to try it out. Inside you are welcomed by a somewhat ramshackle place that looks lived in without being weary, with some random decorations here and there. It's the kind of look a lot of places aim for but get wrong, The 78 felt very inviting from the minute I stepped inside. The bar is reasonably well stocked with some good ales, and as the sun was past the yardarm I plumped for a pint of Seven Giraffes (I'm blaming Graeme H for that) and started to survey the menu. Many of us had a similar question, what was in The 78 Full Weekend Breakfast?? Our friendly waitress happily confirmed that it was toast, mushrooms, beans, vegan sausages, scrambled tofu, potato scones and ... did she say toast already? I was sold and pretty soon our dishes arrived. A hearty looking plate full was put in front of me and I have to admit it was delicious. The sausages were tasty, the scrambled tofu was delicious and I'd soon polished off the lot! Only downsides were that some of the items had obviously been sitting under a heat lamps for a little while, the toast (toasted baguette slices) was a little on the hard side (I managed mine, others couldn't even break the the bread with their teeth). The staff were friendly, the food tasty and the company was as interesting and weird as ever (I mean that in a loving way... the conversation about seat belt lap dances... well I'll say no more). I'd happily eat here again, even though I fear I wouldn't choose it myself.

The Classic Burger with gherkins, onion, paprika slaw and added cheese. All vegan.

The 78 is one of my favourite vegan places in Glasgow. We popped in on a rainy Saturday afternoon for such much needed comfort food. It's always cosy in here, especially when they have their lovely fire on. Ordered a house red as I looked through the menu. It was a really nice, smooth red which went down well. They have a great range of beers and ciders too. Opted for the burger (always do), then added some vegan cheese and a portion of garlic mayo on the side. Their burger is pretty epic. It comes with a paprika slaw, gherkins, onions, salad and delicious house chips. The garlic mayo is pretty amazing too. You can add all sorts of things to your burger, with the potential of making it an absolute monster. They have an amazing night on Thursdays called 'The Dutchy Pot' where they serve 3 courses (which change weekly) for around £9 (starter £2 / main £5 / sweet £2) from 5pm and have Argonaut Sounds playing reggae and dance hall music from 8pm onwards. Even if you're not vegan or veggie, get down to this wee pub. It's a Finnieston gem!

Yum! My first forays into vegan food were sampled at Mono. Although both restaurants are owned by the same people, they truly outdid themselves when they opened the 78. It's how I imagine old pubs to be, perhaps for sophisticated old men with pocket watches, pipes, and monocles. Then again, my imagination does run away with me. The 78 has become a staple dinner-out for my family, as my sister is vegan and introduced us to the place. I like to try something different every time I visit, which is convenient as the menu varies and everything I have tried on it has been delicious. My favourites are the baked sweet potato with mushroom paté, and a potato curry (which I remember being tasty but very hot and its ingredients now escape me!). Falafel is always a good choice, too. They also have some micro-brews on tap and a small but good selection of wines and bottled soft drinks. I hear it can get pretty busy, but when it's quiet it's lovely and laid-back, and the staff are always friendly and helpful.

I have been to The 78 many times for beers and if I was reviewing it on a bar alone it would have been 5 stars however on this occasion I would love to go with 3.5 not quiet a 4 and not as bad as 3. Food choices this place has plenty of options for vegetarian. A nice selection of burgers. To start I had a shared mix platter of olives hummus and pitta bread! This is a must if you are eating here. Mains were a little disappointing I went for the 78 burger it was massive in size and extremely dry. It came with a side of chunky chips and salad which was nice. I washed it all down with a Williams brothers birds an bees. They have a real great selection of beers. The bar has a real cosy atmosphere mix of furniture tables and chairs. The staff here are really friendly and always ready to help and give help on food choices.

I was taking some of my roller derby friends on a vegan/vegetarian food crawl, and The 78 was our second stop. We'd originally planned to walk here from Babu Bombay Street Kitchen but with the weather chucking it down it was more sensible to drive. There's a whole street of parking out the front and if you're lucky, you'll get a spot right outside the door. I'd never bee to The 78 before. I'd seen it lots of times, and talked about going there but I just always seem to miss it when I'm in Finnieston. Outside it looks kind of plain but inside it has a really nice vibe - it's casual, and homely but I don't mean crappy. There are lots of tables as well as a few couches and we happily sat here for hours on Saturday afternoon ordering beers as well as food at random times. We never felt rushed or like they wanted us to order more or leave which was nice. The food was reasonably priced - bowl of chips £2.50 with lots of chips and sauces and everything is vegan. I'm not vegan or vegetarian, and yet I found the food to be delicious and tasty so I was super pleased. While I didn't sample any of the main meals, those I saw looked really good and everyone seemed happy with what they were served up. The staff were friendly and patient when faced with 6 people unable to decide what to order for food. Drinks were good prices and they had a nice selection or beer and wines. A lovely place that I'll be visiting a lot more in the future.

    Doesn't this meal look amazing?

I like the laid back vibe of The 78, and every time I go for a visit, I'm lucky enough to attend a coohl event like Mungo Hi-fi's Record Store Day sale or the Dutch Pot dinner special. But every time I go, there's always at least one staff member that has the grumpiest expression. This is always the case with restaurants/pubs like these. When the partner and I went over last Thursday for some healthy vegan food, we were pleasantly surprised with the Dutch Pot special dinner night thinggy! The food on offer was a starter of beetroot dip/hummus with bread, a main of beetroot and quinoa fritters with salad and some sides, like chips and such. So ok, we ordered that! 2 mains, a starter and a side (totally up to 7pounds each, which was a bargain). The food we ate was awesome! So fresh and delicious! Sometimes you forget how tasty vegetables can be, when cooked and prepared right. They have 2 thumbs up for food, that's for sure! Music playing that night was awesome too (as always). They were playing reggae, assuming it was a Mungo Hi-fi set list. Relaxing it was! The only thing I really disliked was the one tiny chic behind the bar that had a chronic grumpy face. She was not happy when we paid for our food, nor was she happy when she served us our food. Even when she said "enjoy your meal", the tone of it felt more like "ugh just enjoy your damn meal", ya know what I mean? C'mon, doesn't take THAT much effort to smile! Do you want people to go to the 78 or do you want to scare them off? If the staff were friendlier, I'd give it a 4 star but oh well. Grumpiness gets a 3!

They staff are very knowledgeable about it, without being snobbish or pushy, and at quieter times are happy to make recommendations and to chat to you about their favourites. 2. It's small. Actually, in truth, I may have gotten word that this mission was not optional while en route to Scotland. In any case, there was no way we were going to pass up the opportunity to visit this Glasgow institution (deemed so because a friend of mine once sat next to Brad Pitt here) and partake of their £2 White Russians. There's free wifi to delight your internet-deprived drinking companions and plenty of people watching to be had. Our night was sadly cut short when smoke began to fill the room and I suggested we skedaddle. Once outside we discovered the street in process of being shut down and multiple firetrucks working on extinguishing the fire above. Past its prime Nice n Sleazy certainly is but that doesn't mean you shouldn't also put this bar on your Glasgow to-do list.

Sleazy rock? Check! Dirty blues? Check! I think I'm going to like it…read more Now this was a joint I'd never heard of and only came into contact through a friends wee birthday night out. Now we're not talking heavy full pedal to metal kinda night as the participants and birthday man himself had been doing a 24 hour DJ charity gig around Glasgow the day before. So this was a Sunday night just chillin' and grabbing a few beers kinda night listening to all them dirty dirty blues. Da da da da dum! Oh and talking a whole lotta random nonsence. Da da da da dum! At the entrance it spilt into two, venue to left and the bar to the right, here I am stuck in middle..... er em. Sorry! Anyhoo we had a booth which looked like it could be closed to make a private party area. Steady! It was an all round really good night, the decor was non too shabby for a rock stylee venue with fancy wall paper and chandeliers, one girl actually blended into the wall with the top she was wearing. Nice! Drinks what you'd kinda expect to pay in the city centre but overall a fab night out and wouldn't mind swinging by again for some more of them dirty blues. Da da da da dum! Did I mention I saw The Beatles playing in the venue when we left? Very surreal!

With an hour to kill before dinner, I needed a cocktail. Or two. And some chips. Thankfully Slouch…read morehas all these things on the menu PLUS seating so that meant it was the perfect stop for Saturday afternoon drinks. My first cocktail was the Personality Crisis £5.95. Made from "Smirnoff Green Apple Vodka & Xante Pear Cognac, shaken with lemons and apple juice. Finished with a splash of lemonade and a drizzle of grenadine, served in a chilled wine glass." There's no denying this cocktail had an apple zing to it - quite sweet but not too over the top and pretty easy drinking. I'd ordered the twice cooked fries (£2.95) and they arrived pretty quickly and were piping hot. They weren't amazing fries, a little greasy but overall they were pretty decent and we demolished them without any trouble. I then opted to get into a second cocktail - it was a Saturday afternoon, after all. The Black Magic Woman (£6.50) is an espresso martini with "Illy Espresso, Smirnoff Red, Patron XO & brown sugar shaken over ice, strained into a martini glass and dusted with chocolate." Woah. This was GOOD. I mean, really good. A bit addictive, even. Thankfully I wouldn't be able to tolerate two espresso martinis so that wasn't really an option. I loved the chocolate dusting and it was one of the best espresso martinis I've ever had. I'd even go so far as to say I would go back to Slouch just for this cocktail, it was that good.

It is not located in the hip touristy area next to Planet Hollywood. It is a small unassuming pub in a working class neighborhood. We walked from Glasgow University (looks like Hogwarts) which turned out to be a longer walk than Google made it seem. It was cold and drizzly just like Scotland should be so when we got there we were ready. We didn't have reservations but they were extremely nice and sat us down. This is a Pub. Just what you are picturing in your head right now. Dark, lots of dark wood, old crumbling bricks. I love this decor. We started with a couple of appetizers I ordered the Salmon Tartar and my wife ordered the smoked duck breast. I ordered a cold pint my wife had a glass of white wine. We decided to also have a half dozen local oysters. The waitress asked if we were expecting someone else. I guess 3 appetizers is not normal for 2. We were just getting started. Once we demolished all 3 appetizers I followed up with the Pan Seared Gigha Halibut my wife had the steamed Shetland Mussels. What a treat. All the seafood is local and very fresh. All of our dishes from beginning to end were tops. A truly historic dining experience from a historic eatery. In Glasgow then GO...... to The Finnieston. See what I did there. BTW we also had dessert.

Good location to stop on your way back from Kelvingrove's Art Gallery and Museum. We walked from the museum to the pub without any problems. It's nice on the inside. There are some tables and the bar is at the center with a nice display of alcohol both on tap and on the walls. Beer: there was large selection of beer and liquor to choose from. I was looking for a good stout and the bartender, Andrew gave me some really good recommendations. I settled on the Overtone Milk that he recommended and it did not disappoint. It was smooth, full bodied, and flavorful. Nice chocolate flavor with a hint of smokiness to it. My husband got the Drygate IPA and it was crisp and hoppy. Service: I always look for good conversation, attentiveness, kindness, and whether or not the server and or bartender was knowledgeable about what they're serving. Our bartender Andrew was all of the above. He was so welcoming, and my husband and I enjoyed the great conversation With him. He knew a lot about the selection of beers and whiskey, where it came from, and who it came from, so that was wonderful! Thank you Andrew for a great experience. We hope we can stop by again while we're still in Glasgow.
