I know how to be police, I say Police and Thank You, but not to these officers. I've had pretty bad experiences with the Chicago Police Department - most recently a terrible experience when I was pulled over on a Saturday night in the suburbs for doing absolutely nothing. They were very aggressive and scary and acted completely Above the Law and I could not have had a worse experience with them. Except that eventually, after 20 mins or so, they let me go - but I hadn't done anything wrong, so why wouldn't they. I also heard several borderline homophobic comments being made by several of them after the Pride Parade during clean up. Also, a girl was being domestically abused, so I tried to intervene and needed police help. I found a cop and asked him to come help and he said he was already busy with something else, but would "call it in". Nobody ever showed up. read more

I had the unfortunate experience of spending the night in this jail cell due to mistaken identity and was charged with two misdemeanors, both of which eventually got dropped. The processing room I was in was fairly clean and to my surprise the bar to which my right hand was cuffed to was not gross and looked sanitary. After asking nicely, one of the officers kindly adjusted the handcuff as it was on too tight and digging into my wrist bone. The professionalism of the staff was mixed. One officer seemed to be genuinely concerned about my health and asked me if I had cancer as he found a business card for a doctor of internal medicine in my wallet. Others were a little less pleasant, but I do not blame anyone for that if they honestly felt they were dealing with a guilty suspect, so no harm, no foul. The holding cell had burn marks on the ceiling (how did they get lighters in there?) and the toilet was disgusting. This loses a star due to lack of bathroom tissue available. The two benches were flat, painted metal which was cold and smelled disgusting. Another star lost I am afraid. The fellow patrons that joined me later that evening were for the most part inquisitive and talkative. After spending a few hours staring at the ceiling, the floors, the walls, then the ceiling again, this was most refreshing. For the welcome camaraderie factor, this place earns an extra star. The booking area was nice and clean, and the officer that was taking my prints in the machine even had the courtesy to put a soap/water solution on my hands for me! He was also very nice and receptive to my jokes and politely laughed at one. Unfortunately, the individual cell block I spent the rest of the evening/morning in was very unpleasant. I found a 2-3 day old bologna sandwich laying on the floor. To the staffs credit though, it was underneath the flat metal bench and could easily be missed if you were just passing by. As disgusting and sticky as the bench was, I had no choice but to lay down and use my hands as a pillow. I would recommend even the worst roach motels out there a better place to catch some sleep. Lastly, it was a little disappointing that around 7:00 am when they finally released me, I had to exit through a side door and walk all the way around the building to the front entrance to retrieve the rest of belongings. I was also upset that I found my default wall paper background on my cell phone had been changed to a photo of a list of prisoner rules. There was also a small brown stain on the front of the phone. Ugh! I was also upset to find my cigarettes and lighter were not among my possessions. I would give this place another star for being right next to the El, but the unsatisfactory state of my belongings mitigated that. Speaking of it's proximity to the EL, you will have to take my word for it that the last thing you will want to do is sit there and wait, again. I decided to walk the few miles home down Milwaukee Ave. There was even a Walgreens not to far away that was open! You will have one of the more pleasurable smokes after spending a night in the 14th District Police Station (Innocent or not) that is my guarantee! read more

I want to commend Officer Kukielka and Officer Negrete, along with many of their colleagues for helping me today when my wallet was stolen at the Panera Bread on Clybourn and Elston. I received an alert that my card was stolen and being used at Target. I immediately called 911 to let them know that the thieves were in Target still attempting to use my cards and asked that they send a police car ASAP. Kukielka and Negrete were in front of Target in under 5 minutes and went with me over to PetSmart where the Target Security Guard had followed the two thieves. They were able to find my ID and a credit card in their possessions and arrested them. I feel like often we only hear the negative when it comes to the CPD, I am here to tell you that these men and women were incredibly professional, helpful and made my not so great Sunday a whole lot better! There is no serve and protect mentality in this station. My son was in a fender bender and the cop just let the guy go, with no license. So the guy keeps driving? Don't understand this policy, whats the point of calling a cop. read more

I had to go to the station to report an auto accident; the other car turned scary and finally didn't speak to me at all but blocked me from going to the Police Station from the lot where it happened until a police car finally arrive (1+ hour) who told him to GO to the station 2 blocks down. The officer at the front desk explained everything in understandable detail and calmed the man down. I am very appreciative that he did so and defused a situation that should not have had any drama at all...it was a dent! I have not had to go into the station but a few times in my life in the area but have always been treated with respect and explanation...and I appreciate all the police do to keep me safe..and informed. I would never want to 'see' or deal with what they all have to on a daily basis We only hear the negative and never the positive.... We should thank every police officer we see. read more

Unfortunately, a busted car window and a stolen bag brought us to the Police Station yesterday after a lovely brunch. The guys working the desk were super helpful, talkative and friendly! I had just gotten in a car accident on milwaukee and California. Called 911 and waited for 30 minutes even though they are literally a bock away. In the mean time the person who hit me left because he said he forgot his wallet. All this is happening while having neck & back pain. My boyfriend arrived at the scene and suggested that I just drive to the police station since it was right there... When we get to the station we begin to report the accident. I was very distraught at everything that happened and was having a hard time gathering my info. Officer Santiago was the one writing the report and was completely insensitive, impatient and basically a condescending jerk. He treated me as if I was the one that committed a crime. I mean, I know cops are rarely pleasant but I KNOW I didn't deserve that. I didn't even want to go into that police station first off because before we even walk in some guy outside shouts "don't bother, these cops don't give a sh*t". I wish I could give no stars for the horrible experience that I went through, and I know writing this review for a police station may not be helpful but I'd rather share my story than not... read more

Had a friend go missing last night after a night out. He disappeared in the 3 minutes I spent waiting for a slice of pizza, after he had already gotten his. This guy has been a friend of mine for 20 years and he's not the sort to go missing, especially without telling me. After calling him 30 times until his phone had died, and searching every bar and alley in a 1 mile radius between the hours of 2 and 4:30am, I spoke to a police officer patrolling the area, asking what I should do. He recommended going into the nearest station and filling out a missing persons report as a precaution, as the temperature was in the teens and if he had fallen asleep somewhere, he might not wake up. Went into this police station where I was greeted with immediate hostility by the two officers working the front desk. The first question they asked me was his age. They said that since he was an adult, and I was not living with him (he lives with his parents), that they could not fill out a report. Having recently gotten a new phone, I did not have his parent's phone number so that I could contact them and we could fill out the report. I asked if there was a way they could help find it, perhaps in some sort of police registry and they ridiculed me, as if this were impossible. They wouldn't even take my description of my friend, or radio out to see if anyone fitting his description had been picked up. At this, I explained that I was scared he might be freezing to death somewhere and asked if they could help do anything. At this, they stood up and one of them screamed, pointing at me, "YOU'RE FRIEND WAS DRUNK. YOU'RE FRIEND DOES NOT WANT TO BE WITH YOU RIGHT NOW. SAY IT!" They made me repeat this and then made me leave. Shaken, I went back to the place we were supposed to be staying and started calling local hospitals. By some miracle, I located him at a hospital a mile away. It turns out that a squad car from this department had picked him up at 2am and driven him to the hospital for being intoxicated. He was "treated" (provided a cot to lie down on for 3 hours) and then released at 6am. Couldn't the officers at the station have figured this out? Couldn't they have radioed his name and description, and helped me end this terrifying night? Apparently not, they didn't lift a finger. Long story short, I was belittled and humiliated at a time where I was scared for the life of a friend. I will avoid seeking help from this department at all costs. read more
