This place definitely didn't live up to its Yelp reviews tonight. Irish stew wasn't great and was only slightly warm when brought to the table. Service was terrible. Didn't see the waiter again after placing our order. After food and drinks were dropped by someone else we weren't checked on, plates weren't cleared and after asking about another drink we waited so long that we decided to just leave. Would not return or recommend...plenty of other options in the area with same food and drink options. Maybe they were having an off night but wouldn't return to figure it out. read more

The place got busier as the night wore on. Serving many of your traditional Irish dishes with Guiness & other drinks on tap. It was a nice experience to try this place when there was live music & the crowd got larger. However, it takes awhile to get your bill as seemed like everyone was busy. I think we saw a table walk out and nobody even noticed. If you're into hectic & traditional, this may be the place for you. Prices are steep like the rest of Ireland but serving sizes are large. read more

My absolute favorite Christmas decorations. Everywhere was decorated so great but this one was the best! We went back two days in a row just for the decorations. The service was also really great. The live music was fantastic. Pretty large with lots of seats but still gets pretty busy. One of my favorites in Galway. read more

After a morning of exploring Galway, it was time for a drink and M. Fitzgerald's hit the spot. Located along the busy district of Quay Street, it wasn't too busy in here at lunch time. This restaurant has gone through a name change from 1520 to M. Fitzgerald's. The music caught our attention and the place was packed. But we were seated in a great little rock alcove in the Penny Bar. We had the Guinness Beef Stew and a Lamb Shank served with roasted veggies and mashed potato. Both were excellent with the meat so tender and a rich brown gravy. We also had a Whiskey Sour, Galway Hooker Girl IPA and a Rockshore Cider. Overall a very good experience. read more

Stopped in here for a drink and small bites. Ended up staying longer and had a great time! Fun atmosphere and friendly staff all around. The front door guy, Trevor, said all the outside seating was taken but would let us know when a table opened up. We hung out inside and grabbed some guiness. Figured it was so busy he probably forgot. Trevor then grabbed us when a table opened up! He also told the servers we moved tables. Impeccable service here! Chatted with him for a bit. Cool guy! We were looking for a place to listen to live music that also served food and we happened to walk by this place so we went in. Unfortunately, there aren't a ton of tables, so we had to wait at least a half an hour to get a table. We got a drink at the bar and enjoyed the music while we waited. Once seated, our service was very fast. My husband wanted an order of cheesey garlic bread which was just ok. For our main dish, we split the hot dog, which was absolutely delicious. It had great flavor and we both loved it. My dad got the curry and my mom got the eggplant and they both loved their dishes. The live music was really good and we enjoyed listening to it during our meal. I was very impressed with the food. I wasn't expecting much from a bar, but it was really good. I would definitely recommend checking this place out for live music and good food! read more

I've been looking for my kind of bands in Ireland and learned from the music pub crawl that I prefer bands that play "songs," which is music that is sung as opposed to "tunes"--music that is purely instrumental. I was thrilled to come across 1560, where they had a band called Sin A Dier Si who sang songs by Elton John, Lumineers, The Band accompanied by traditional instruments. Such a welcome respite. We were in here on a day trip to Galway. Cocktails were lousy, stick with beer. Food was average. One person in our party ordered the beef stew they waited over an hour after the order was placed to tell her they were out of it. It took 1 hour and 5 minutes from when we entered and sat down until the food was served. Never cleared one dish or empty glass off the table during the entire meal despite staff walking past our table every trip to the kitchen. read more

Awesome pub. Traditional in many senses such as the decor and the food they offer. The waitstaff was friendly, helpful and attentive. We both ordered the lamb Guinness stew and it was PHENOMENAL! The lamb was the best cut and so tender. The broth was thinner but so flavorful and perfectly seasoned. The stew was chock full of veggies like potatoes and carrots and celery. The team are so hospitable, with a warm welcome and friendly attentive service. A medieval themed Irish Bar with a 21st century Kick! Savour home-cooked, rustic bar food, from 10.30am - 8pm daily, Monday to Saturday and from 12.30pm on Sunday. Sip your favourite classic cocktails with a modern twist or take in some tunes. Legendary nightly live music - from traditional music sessions, daily from 6pm to house musicians and some of Ireland's top DJ's playing until late every Thursday, Friday and Saturday night. The welcoming interiors include plenty of corners and well-worn upholstery with an eclectic mix of portraits, posters and paraphernalia dotted throughout.

History

Established in 2017.

1520 is very much a 21st-century bar with a nod to our rich and varied history, influenced by the 14 Tribes of Galway. We are lucky to be situated in the Medieval heart of Galway, on Quay St and Kirwan's Lane, a section what was once called Martin's Lane. Parts of the original walls still exist in the bar today. The bar was completely renovated in 2017 and is now one of the top Irish Bars in Galway.

Most other Irish pubs don't mind some chatter above the music but here, it is expected that you be silent during some songs. The staff won't be shy about shushing you either. I hadn't encountered this elsewhere in Ireland and I was told by a local that this is fairly uncommon for pubs. It just goes to show how central live music is to the Crane Bar experience. Beyond that, the pints were cold and the service was quick. I highly recommend stopping in to Crane Bar for a traditional Irish pub experience.
