This place was right across the street from our hotel. It's bigger inside than it looks from the outside. There was traditional music playing upfront early in the weekday, and a different live band starting up in the evening outback. They have a great outdoor patio with a cover, so it's a great place to watch a game regardless of the weather. They had a good selection of whiskeys, and if you don't see what you like, they seem to have a storeroom to bring out more varieties. read more

There is a great amount of options on the menu here, Irish fare or not. The place does seem to fill up quickly, even for a weekday. Of course, it didn't help that a tour bus full of students had reserved the entire back room so it was closed for additional seating. After scrambling for a table, my family sat right in front by the live music. It was a great duet playing that evening, but being so far from the bar meant poor service. So they have Bottomless Guinness on Sundays. Need I say more? Yes! This place is great and a must go if you're visiting Galway and looking for a fun night out. They have live music and a DJ. They have a covered outdoor garden which is great for watching sports. Then inside they have a more traditional style pub. The bartenders are cool. I think they poor one of the best Guinness in Galway. It's sooo good. They have good whiskey and gin selections. But the best part is the crowd. There are always hen parties here. We went here because it was close to our hotel and we could watch the Chelsea match. They have many locations to sit and watch TV and the back garden is heated nicely especially for January. This was the place to be on a holiday weekend! We walked in at dinner time and the place was mobbed. In the front area with the main bar there was a one man band playing old American folk music like John Denver. Looking for a table we walked through to the back bar, and into the back beer garden. Lots of tables were reserved, and we could tell it was the "in" spot for bachelorette parties. Fortunately, we found a table of guys getting up and snagged their table. A friendly waitress came right over to clear and wipe the table, and give us menus. My friend ordered mussels, and it was a heaping bowl of tiny, tasty mussels. I was craving wings, and the Jameson Black Barrel BBQ sauce they were slathered in was delicious. Served with a Guinness, it was exactly what I was looking for. Dessert was an slightly warm apple tart that was just okay - it wasn't homemade, and it was kind of bland, even with ice cream and whipped cream. My server was pleasant and I enjoyed talked about whiskey with him. They have a large whiskey selection. They were playing the soccer game on the TV so there was many people there to watch the game. Got the seafood platter and chowder, very yummy! Not too busy during lunchtime on a weekday so service was quick and our waiter was so kind.

This was SUCH a cool pub. Go straight to the back to the outdoor area and you will be amazed. When visiting Ireland we were continuously blown away by how each small pub storefront hid a maze of bar, restaurant, and outdoor seating. There are many young locals here, mostly students enjoying time with their friends. We loved the beautiful atmosphere and decor and the fun but relaxed energy. This is a very lively pub for 11pm on a Monday night. They have live music, the crowd is lively, and a mix of all ages, tourists, and a few locals. Nice, private, and secluded booths to hang out in. The staff running the place were even kind enough to allow a group of tourists behind the bar for a photo opp, so they could pretend they were serving their own beer. Super cool! Unfortunately, last call is on Monday nights is 11:30PM. And they start flashing the lights on and off to get your butt to go home. Hey, I understand. The staff want to go home as well. They have live Irish music between 6-8pm. I had the bacon and cabbage with mashed potatoes. It was fresh and tasted really good. My friend had the power salad and added sliced chicken breast. The salad had romaine lettuce, carrots, tomatoes, goat cheese, garbanzo beans, and avocado. This place is huge! The front bar is a traditional Irish pub with the wood floors and walls. This place has everything you are looking for, good music, good food, and good beer. For a pub that specializes in drink, the food was quite good. Raw Oysters were locally sourced and delicious. Very fresh. Fish and chips were perfect. A lemon sole, covered in a light batter complimented by crisp chips. Excellent flavor. The crab claws in garlic butter were delicious. The ambiance of the place made up for us missing live music; the friendly staff, the tvs with local games on, and the music overhead made it a great experience. I settled on the Jameson and tonic (could have been stronger) and the Seafood Platter for two. They do provide a hearty quantity for two people. Everything comes cold. I loved the mashed potatoes and coleslaw; their flavors had a pop-to it; the mackerel was well-seasoned, with a unique spice profile. The salmon, crab, and shrimp were nothing special, and the 'special' brown bread was hard. While it was yummy, I wish I went with the burger and pint deal. I'd also suggest the chicken pasta (my friend got it and while pasta seems unexciting, the creamy red sauce was quite yummy). read more

There are a lot of pubs in the cities of Ireland and it is hard to tell the great from the lousy. If you are in Galway and asking yourself this question, look no further than An Pucan. An Pucan is sort of on the outskirts of the downtown and almost of the heavily trodden tourist trail along Quay and High Streets. The pub has two parts, classic pub up front and more of a sports bar / club in the back. When we went, there was a great band playing covers and Irish music up front and there was a rugby match on the massive TVs in the back bar. Best of both worlds. We also ordered dinner - ranging from shrimp to mussels to burgers. Everything was very good. The service was pretty good - spotty at times, but the place was slammed, so it was good considering everything. There were a lot of tourists there, but there were also a lot of locals there as well. Definitely skip the rest of the town and head to An Pucan when it is time to tip the ol' elbow for a pint. read more

Mannn where to begin? I spent two nights in Galway with my fiancée. We went to O Connells & this place. This place was more of a "get drunk" and have a great time with the lads type of place. O Con is more of a have a drink, and some pizza type of place (If that makes sense?) really enjoyed my time here! I went on a Friday night, and spent around 5 hours here!! They had a live cover duo from 7-9 and a band in the back from about 10 - 12. Had a splendid time! The pub is big, the music was great, and the beer was good. We were looking for dinner at a the last minute in Galway and fortunately An Pucán could take us. It just seems like a bustling noisy pub but the food was wonderful and the brown bread was heaven. Our server was very sweet and efficient. It is a bit noisy, but it is a pub after all and people are there having a good time- and rightly so.
