Pursuing the perfect cortado is a hobby I've earnestly committed to over the last two years. The adventure has taken me to 326 coffee shops since January 17, 2022. I can honestly declare 18 Grams Coffee Lab to be the best cortado I've tasted. My first visit to 18 Grams Coffee Lab was last summer. I knew they created a good cortado then, but I wanted to make sure. This afternoon my husband and I made the hour and half trip back to Culpeper, VA to revisit 18 Grams Coffee Lab. Thank heavens we did! Today's experience was even better than the last one. We met Joe, the owner, and listening to him talk about cortados made me understand why 18 Gram Coffee Lab creates the perfect cortado. Joe is extremely knowledgeable and. passionate about cortados and coffee in general. He wants his customers to experience the flavor of well made coffee. He uses local organic milk. He makes homemade ganache utilizing chocolate from France. He also carefully selects his coffee beans. Most importantly, he takes the time to measure his coffee, steams milk to the perfect temperature and even balances out milk and espresso to get the perfect drink. My husband ordered the Campfire S'More Experience. We eagerly watched Joe measure the beans for the espresso, steam the milk to a perfect temperature, expertly smoke the latte, toast the marshmallow, drizzle chocolate ganache, and finally carefully plate the latte. My husband enjoyed the latte just as much as I enjoyed my cortado. I typically don't like "fancy" lattes because they are too sweet and you can't taste the espresso. But Joe created such an eye appealing latte that I had to steal a few sips. It was delicious! If I lived closer to 18 Grams Coffee Lab I would consider changing my "go to coffee drink" from a cortado to a Campfire S'More Experience Latte. Well...maybe. Thank you Joe for creating delectable specialty espresso drinks. I truly appreciate you taking the time to talk to my husband and I. I was, unfortunately, really disappointed with this place! I stopped here on a whim and didn't really know what I was getting myself into. I ordered a small mocha latte that ended up being $9. And for $9, it was super small portion. It felt like I was back in California with these prices. Maybe I read the menu wrong, but I thought their lattes were $5. Nevertheless, I was still willing to give them a chance. Now, if it was an amazing mocha latte then I would've justified the price, but it was the worst one I've ever had. I couldn't even finish it and ended up throwing it away after walking down the street. I will say the service was super nice and explained how their coffee is different after I had already ordered. I understand that they're an innovative coffee shop, but I would've assumed their simple mocha latte would've been better! If you're a coffee connoisseur, you might really enjoy this place, but for a simple mocha loving girl, I'd rather find someplace else. read more

I stopped by this coffee shop to get some breakfast via some pictures that looks good on Yelp. They didn't server that type of food anymore so I was bummed out. So I asked for an americano to be on my way. The person taking my order says he not going to water down an espresso.... I was in shock cause in the yelp reviews Americano was a thing. I was like ok just give me an espresso and make it to go. I ask for it to go so I can add water and drink it as an americano on my own. I wasn't asking for something crazy. He then replied, he has never seen anyone get an espresso to go. Strike two. Never have I had such resistance to get an americano to go. Best coffee in Culpeper! If you appreciate a well made cappuccino verses a mug full of foam this is your place. The barista is knowledgeable, friendly and incredibly hard working with an excellent knowledge of the food and beverages. The food is fresh, I was shocked when they made my ricotta berry toast and I watched her grate fresh lemon on top. There is an attention to detail her that's severely lacking elsewhere. At first the whole bike shop/coffee shop combo was confusing so I resisted checking it out, but I think it's just the blending of two loves. I'm just glad to have finally found the perfect cup of coffee for mine and hubby's afternoon coffee date! read more

Best espresso in Northern Virginia! The muffins are over the top delicious and the turmeric special latte is amazing. The space is clean, the bathrooms are spotless. We make a point of stopping here every time we come through Culpepper on our motorcycles, and often make the trip just to get coffee here. Cannot recommend enough! read more

I had come here once before to have coffee with a friend and I was blown away by how great the food and coffee was, so I stopped by again before work to get a latte and toast to go. The shop was empty except for a small family, and my order of 1 drink and 1 toast took exactly 30 minutes to be ready. Not really anyone's fault, just something to note if you're planning on doing a quick grab and go before work etc. I wouldn't have minded waiting half an hour at all if I was dining in though, because the food and drinks are great! It's a very refined coffee shop, and they definitely take the time to make sure your order is perfect. Will definitely be back, maybe just not when i'm in a time crunch lol! read more

I gather the owner wants to showcase this bike shop/coffee shop as an artisan and high-end coffee experience. There was a nice music playlist going (Tori Amos, Blondie), but the environment wasn't very comfortable or cozy. Sweet barista. Internet was quite choppy and slow and went out a couple times. Holy cow. Where do I start? My boyfriend and I had the pleasure of visiting 18 Grams back in October, and then again a few months later. When we first visited, we had wonderful conversations with the owner and one of the head baristas. They walked us through the science that goes into artisan coffee, and explained why they make their coffee the way they do. It was delightful to learn and even more so to drink the coffee they made for us. The espresso shots are flawless and the milk in the other drinks is heated perfectly to pull the honey tones out of it in the drinks. I truly enjoy visiting whenever we can and it is a staple location we include in our drives out to Culpeper. If you are a sugary-coffee drinker, I would highly encourage you to go outside your comfort zone and get a traditional coffee from these folks. They do it right! read more

We had the avocado toast and the ham, cheese and blackberry jam breakfast sandwich. The flavors were great The coffee was good too but there was a limited menu-but definitely good flavors and an interesting selection for the adventurous palate SERVICE: Decent but something about our servers disposition left me with a "I don't care to come back" feeling. He had a condescending nature as we attempted to navigate the menu-making statement such as "We don't eat here" - when asked about the food - as well as making a negative statement about ordering something we had not tried before. I much prefer one of the other local coffee shops where I feel welcomed and that my patronage is appreciated. AMBIANCE: Pretty cool spot especially if you are a cyclist. what a lovely coffee shop in a small town! we stopped by Culpeper and tried a few places, along with 18 grams coffee. here, we got our morning coffee drinks. the bright atmosphere and cups were simple and beautiful. i got the 6, which is a cappuccino. it was gorgeous and educated perfectly! the pastries all looked quite tempting. on observing other's orders, the food looked absolutely delicious! will have to come back to try it. my boyfriend and i happened to be sitting around when the ?owner ?manager came by. he seem to be disciplining his barista, who was so so nice to us. he sounded quite rude! (corroborated by other reviews here!) and, as we were sitting at a table, trying to get some work done, he came over to ask us - and the only other customer who was also in her laptop - to move onto the high tops by the window as that is the only place we could use the wifi. so, the three of us awkwardly squeezed together at the space by the window. it was as if he was hoping we'd leave. it was awkward because we - including the other customer we did not know - were there for some time before he decided to ask us to move. and, he was around for some time before the ask! it was all very weird. i only wish this experience didn't taint our morning at 18 grams. great coffee! read more

We drive from Alexandria Va to enjoy their fantastic coffees and food! The salads, toasts and desserts are as good as a 5 star restraunt! We try something different each time and we are always amazed at the fresh ingredients and thoughtful touches. Their balsamic vinegar, breads all highest quality. Very nice workers, warm atmosphere, it's in a high end bike store: cozy chairs and an adorable owners dog visits on occasion. Ok so I look on this menu and I see a $9 latte. NINE DOLLARS. But it sounds delicious: salted caramel, frothy milk. Wow. So I order it and...it's worth it. It really is. It's so smooth and sweet and buttery. This place makes all their own sauces and that's why the drinks need to be served warm and not iced (for proper mixing). They served my latte with a Ghirardelli square. My husband is a big coffee snob and liked his drink as well (I forget what it was - cold brew or something dark & simple, most likely. And it was not $9 lol). This coffee shop is actually a small counter inside of a bicycle shop. There is a huge step down when you walk into the shop: beware! We 3 almost tripped over it, even though there is a big sign. It's still somehow easy to miss. All of the food looked amazing on the menu and photos, but I didn't get a chance to try any. My friend and I got stuck in Culpeper when our Amtrak was delayed 2 hours, so we set off in search of coffee and sustenance. Faced with the choice between two coffee shops, we opted for the one that sounded the most third-wavey (read: a bit hipster, and definitely super knowledgeable and passionate about coffee). We definitely made the right choice. We ended up passing the entire afternoon there, learning from the barista about ethical coffee sourcing and how to pull the perfect espresso shot. We met the owner, too, who showed us the ins and outs of building one of the most advanced cycling shops in the region, and shared stories of his time in NYC and and tips for finding an elusive barber. We tried the Japanese style iced coffee, and the barista put so much care and precision into it that I can honestly say it was the best cup I've had in over a year. Places like 18 Grams Coffee Lab are like homes away from home, where you can relax, enjoy memorable coffee and nourishing food (we tried the bacon/cheddar scone, the dark chocolate brownie bite, the acai bowl, and the iced biscotti), and even do some quiet laptop work in a comfy, well-lit cafe with good wifi and an energizing design aesthetic. 18 Grams combined the relaxed pace of a small town with the exceptional service and coffee quality that even shops in the heart of Brooklyn and Manhattan struggle to measure up to. I wish they'd open a shop like this in my neighborhood in NYC. Definitely come here if you're ever in Culpeper. I came back and tried it again based on my last review and on the request of the owner and was so incredibly shocked at how rude the barista was AGAIN. He was patronizing and offensive because my mom ordered a large skim latte. He then chastised her for not having her glasses saying, "women never bring their glasses. Men don't have this problem!" Now, I can take a joke.. haha ok moving on. He continued to treat her like she kicked his cat by telling her that it is simple to read and maybe she should try reading the menu to understand the simple sizes that are listed. I gave him an astonished look and he doubled down and gave me a nasty look right back. He continued on with the bad attitude throughout the exchange. He was kind enough to explain what the 2, 4, 6, and 12 mean next to the name of the drink but did it in such a disparaging way. I love to learn about coffee - I do not like being treated like an idiot. What's most disappointing is that they have really good coffee. I can't give my business to this place anymore because of how awful this guy is. He is one of the rudest, most entitled, and disrespectful people I've come in contact with in the food industry for a long time. I really wanted to like this place. Perfect casual breakfast. I stopped by 18 Grams Coffee Lab to quickly grab a cup of coffee and be on my way. However, I ended up staying a few minutes sitting in their very comfortable lounge. Jerry prepared me a great salted caramel latte. I saw three others raving about the egg, bacon and cheese croissants that Jerry had just made them. I ordered the ham, cheese and egg biscuit. The syrups are all homemade so they do not have artificial sweeteners, and they are not super sweet. The barista was skilled in her craft, we watched her make the espresso and prepare the drinks. There are a few places where I've been where there are two expertises juggled so well in one. At 18 grams, a hybrid coffee and bike shop, it was great to see the combined passions so synergistic from both a business and design level. There are some bike shops that have coffee as more of an afterthought and vice versa, but I could tell that the owner and barista working there were so passionate about both projects that we stayed for almost 2 hours sipping on Japanese cold brew, eating scones, and having great conversations about the future of coffee farms and VR-infused bike technology. Coming from NYC, 18 grams is definitely a gem and great place to stop by in Culpeper (and close to the Amtrak station as well!) Equal parts conveniently located and refreshing in energy, I'll be sure to be back for both high-grade coffee and conversation. read more

Style over quality . The place has a nice vibe but that's about it. Very overpriced for very average drinks. Dessert lattes is $8 but small size (Starbucks size Tall). Japanese Iced tea is $5.50 and it's just regular iced coffee and I asked for less ice (although it's still enough to freeze my drink) and you can see how much is poured in the cup. Wait time is 25mins for two drinks. UPDATE: Really appreciate the explanation from the cafe but no one told us it would take that long at all. Wandered upon this coffee shop after leaving another local coffee shop, the Ravens Nest, highly disappointed. We were excited to see that their menu offered a Mexican Mocha latte, a complex sweet yet spicy balanced flavor profile that hasn't caught on in most coffee shops yet. Yet, when we went to order this drink, we were met by judgement from a gentleman who appeared to be the manager, who stated "don't get this drink, this is meant for people who like Starbucks." First of all, this is your menu. If you're catering towards consumers who "like Starbucks" then maybe you should reevaluate your menu. Second, don't assume that people who order those drinks don't know good coffee. If you can execute the flavoring and balance it with your brew, your coffee will always be enjoyable. Third, while we probably should've been dissuaded from this display of customer service, we still ordered the Mexican Mocha latte and a flat white. This distasteful encounter aside, this coffee was not to the caliber boasted by the manager. Frankly, I've had better coffee at Starbucks. read more

I visited Culpeper from DC and saw a number of great food options in the downtown area on and near Main Street. 18 Grams is tucked away from the main strip down on Locust, so you'll most likely have to look for it intentionally. I saw the reviews were good on Yelp and the pictures looked delicious, so I had to try it out. And I'm so glad I did! This place is so good! When you first walk in, you'll be greeted by an open, bright, modern-looking room. It may be a little confusing when you first enter, because the cafe shares a space with VeloConcepts. When I entered, I was greeted, and the girl behind the counter was so friendly and patient as I asked questions and made my selections. I was also offered a sample (the curry toast which is really good!). I decided to purchase the banana & strawberry toast and the hot chocolate with oat milk. The banana & strawberry toast was sooo goodd. It was better than the kind I get from Fruitive up in DC (perfect thick toast texture, perfect blend of flavors with fresh fruits) for a better price. The hot chocolate was the best I had ever had with oat milk, so I was super impressed! I also purchased the cranberry apple brie toast to go, and I'm looking forward to trying that one out as well later! Awesome place I'd highly recommend if you like the kinds of things on their menu.
