The view, the gorgeous interiors, and the rich history were all things that finally led us to choose this as our venue for our wedding. But, above all else, was the venue owner - Roger Swonger. He went above and beyond to make our day as special as it possibly could be, and with his help, our wedding day went absolutely perfect. With just one planning session, and a couple of tours, Roger was able to guide us through the perfect day. He communicated well with all of the vendors, was able to provide an amazing wait staff, and bartender, and even thought of the small details - placing some flowers on our small wedding cake, putting a pen by the guest book, etc. Most importantly to us, as a now husband and husband duo, was finding a venue that was accepting. This was Roger to a tee - not only did he treat us with kindness, he guided us towards other LGBTQ+ friendly vendors as well. With his support and guidance, we had a wedding that completely surpassed our exceptions of what a wedding could ever look like in an area like Kentucky. I don't think there is any universe where we could have had a better wedding, and this is all thanks to Roger, and all thanks to having our wedding ceremony at Wiedemann Hill Mansion.

Also loved that they had porch heaters and blankets so you could still enjoy the view and be warm. The place is perfect for a 60 person wedding and really not crowded at all.

However, the experience leading up to and during the event was filled with stress, miscommunication, and disappointment--primarily due to our interactions with Lyndsay Rapier-Phipps. Our initial meetings with Teri and Sam were wonderful--they were kind, enthusiastic, and supportive of our ideas, including adding drapery, fireworks across the lake, access to the décor inventory, and decorating the night before. At $5,000, the venue felt like a great fit. But once communication shifted to Lyndsay, the tone changed. She never met with us in person, and responses became difficult and often frustrating. My daughter even forwarded me texts from Lyndsay saying, "I don't know what to do with this--can you contact them for me?" The draperies turned into a confusing and drawn-out process. I ultimately gave up on it to preserve my sanity. There were differences in what we were told during our visits versus what Lyndsay would email us. The biggest issue was about decorating the night before. We had confirmed with Sam in March and May that no event was scheduled, so we could decorate early. Yet two weeks before the wedding, we were told otherwise. We were offered early access at 7:00 a.m. the day of the event, which Lyndsay called "above and beyond." However, no staff were present at that time, as promised, and the cart and food tables we had spoke about during our planning meeting weren't there. They even did a tour for another party at our venue that morning as we were scrambling to get things done. I was flabbergasted. After calling and texting "Help!" a staff member finally arrived around 9am. We did change the count to include two additional tables just a week before our event (late RSVP's), but the layout had the walkways blocked. The event space says it can have up to 200 people, we had chairs/tables for 150. We had to rearrange every table ourselves that morning--including moving the bridal party tables--causing us to fall way behind schedule even with 20+ people helping. At the end of the night staff began clearing décor before the event had ended. The next day, we realized many of our gold chargers were missing. After contacting Becca, I was referred to Lyndsay, who refused to deliver them and said they'd be mailed in 3-4 weeks. However, after posting my reviews, she texted me to say they would no longer be mailed, and I would now have to schedule a pickup 24 hours in advance to retrieve them. We picked all 80 of them up a week later, and they were still filthy. If we had accidently taken their decor we would have returned it to them directly and they would absolutely be clean. When I messaged Lyndsay about this, she responded with personal insults against myself and said that I was "delusional". It's been 40 days since the wedding and they haven't given us our refunded $500 deposit back. We left the venue immaculate when we left. When I told Lyndsay we would be filing a small claims, she said "small claims could really cost you". I shielded my daughter from all this and she had a beautiful wedding day, and that's ultimately what matters most. I'm not trying to harm any business--this was simply our experience with Lake Lyndsay. Just be aware that while others have had a good experience, there may be a chance this could happen to you as well.

Although there were still a lot of pieces we had to coordinate ourselves, Cheyenne was regularly checking in, staying up to date on our plans, and giving helpful recommendations as we went along. Our only two bumps we hit were with the timeline for our day and the ballroom itself. When booking the event our ceremony was booked for 5pm-6pm and our reception was booked for 7pm-12am. When booking I had asked what would happen with the hour in between and was told it would be a cocktail hour so I thought nothing of it. When we were about a month out from the event Cheyenne reached out to let us know that it was a mistake and asked if we wanted to bump our reception up. Since we had already printed and sent invitation showing the end time as midnight we were not wanting to do this. Thankfully, Cheyenne and the event team were willing to work with us to make it right and extended our reception to be 6pm-12am at no additional cost to us. The other bump was that in the year and a half between booking the venue and our event, renovations were done to The Crystal that we were not notified of. I discovered them when we went for our food tasting and we saw the room for the first time since booking. The room is almost fully mirrored and they had applied an antique glass effect to them that I really disliked. There wasn't anything we could do about this with the event being less than 2 months out and the other reception spaces being booked. This was disappointing, but ultimately on the day of just didn't matter at all. I only wish we had been given a heads up at the time of renovations so that we could have pivoted plans to a space that was more our aesthetic and vibe. Our ceremony was held on The Lawn at Hotel Covington. I can't say for certain, but I think there were at least two other weddings happening at the venue on our date. Initially this made me nervous, but you could hardly tell. Our party wasn't interrupted at all! The Lawn is absolutely stunning and was the perfect backdrop for our ceremony! It was also a fun bonus that my room in the hotel overlooked The Lawn. As I was getting ready throughout the day I could look out and see the florists progress, I could see our guests arrive, and I could watch my husband process down the aisle with his parents. I'll also note that the hotel is pet friendly which was amazing! We had our dog in our wedding and she was able to stay overnight with us. It was super convenient to have her participate in our ceremony, and then to be able to drop her off up in our hotel room before heading over to the reception! Our reception was in The Crystal Ballroom. It was nice to be right on the first floor and the space comfortably held our ~150 guest wedding with room to spare! I only wish the tables had been more spread out and spread further back towards the entrance of the room. They felt very cramped together which seemed unnecessary given all the space that was open at the end of the room. The price tag looks steep at first glance, it ended up being on par with other more venues we looked at once you factored in caterer, bar services, decor rentals, tables/chairs, and linens. I highly recommend for couples looking to have a smoother planning experience with less moving parts from outside vendors.
